Tuesday Roundup: Lady Jaguars rally after early 5-0 deficit, score seven unanswered to knock off Fillmore with 7-5 home win; Lady Lions shut out C-G with 8-0 victory

BELMONT — In their last meeting, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore had Genesee Valley on the ropes for much of the game, scoring a 5-0 lead while Kirstin Frazier locked down the Lady Jaguars offense to just three hits to preserve their home win back on Thursday.

When Tuesday came to finish off the home-at-home series, it was a similar case scenario that started the first three innings of play, with the Lady Eagles taking advantage of what they saw to earn a 5-0 lead to begin. But, this time around, the response the Lady Jaguars provided was quick and it was fierce.

In the bottom of the third inning, Genesee Valley rebounded and in a big way, as they scored a game-tying frame to set up what became seven unanswered runs, with their last two coming in the fourth inning, as the defense buckled down in the last three innings of play to keep the Lady Eagles off the board and split their season series with a 7-5 comeback victory at home.

Like the previous matchup, the Lady Eagles (4-4) used baserunning to their advantage to get their wheels churning on offense, scoring four of their five runs on special teams. But the Lady Jaguars (5-4) found a way to respond almost immediately after Fillmore’s tenure of third inning offense concluded, as their five-run lead was wiped out with a massive five-run stand back the other way by the hosts in green and black.

Genesee Valley would also use their legs to their advantage as well, scoring multiple runs off special teams to go with a Katie Bartlett RBI single that finished off the rally from behind to tie the game at five heading into the back half of the game.

After the Lady Jaguars got back off the field on a rapid spurt of defense, they went back to work at the plate to take the lead away from Fillmore in the bottom of the fourth, with Sierra Burrows providing a big fielder’s choice to the left side of the infield, plating Addy Grusendorf to give them the eventual lead, ultimately for good.

But the Lady Eagles would put on one last stand of offense in the last two innings, loading up the bases behind Sierra Burrows in the circle with three straight walks, and a two-out triple to the deep outfield by Torann Wolfer to help attempt to chip away at their deficit. The Lady Jaguars would find their way off each time, as they gathered multiple infield flies to record the out, with Emera Aquila grabbing the last at shortstop to end the game where it stood.

Grusendorf led all Genesee Valley batters with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, scoring two runs. Kayci Bigelow added in two hits of her own including a double, and run scored. Ashley Burrows chipped in with a double, while Bartlett, Natalie Brodman and Raygen Haggstrom each had a hit to chip in. In the circle, Sierra Burrows struck out four and walked seven in her four-hit victory.

Fillmore, alongside Wolfer’s triple, were led by Frazier, Preslee Miller and Zoe Beardsley, who each had a hit to record. Frazier in the circle struck out two and walked one in her complete game for the Lady Eagles.

Both teams have a quick turnaround tonight with 5 p.m. first pitches, as Genesee Valley looks to ride the momentum into Bolivar-Richburg, where they begin their last home-at-home series of the regular season, visiting the Lady Wolverines, while Fillmore heads back home aiming to rebound with a doubleheader against Whitesville forthcoming in a 5 p.m. start.

Wellsville 8, Canisteo-Greenwood 0

WELLSVILLE — Excellent pitching. Timely hitting. Those two facets to any game were ones the Lady Lions of Wellsville took control of after a scoreless first inning exchange with visiting Canisteo-Greenwood under the lights at Tullar Field on Tuesday, as the team continued their dominant stance on offense while Makenzie Cowburn dished out another dynamic performance in the circle in the team’s 8-0 shutout win over the Lady Redskins.

While Cowburn held Canisteo-Greenwood in check for the majority of the contest on defense, the offense provided eight runs off 11 total hits at the plate, with three different Lady Lions (17-1) all having a hand at providing a three-run third inning after the team broke the ice with a 1-0 lead after the second.

Carly Young, Marley Adams and Mallory Sibble all recorded massive RBI hits, with Young starting off with an RBI triple, before Adams and Sibble followed suit by going back-to-back with RBI doubles to finish off the frame, earning an extended lead of four. After trading a scoreless fourth inning, the hits continued into the fifth when Maddie Spicer extended the Wellsville lead to five off an RBI double of her own.

The scoring concluded with one last three-run frame coming in the sixth, led by Matti Burke’s RBI single to grow the lead for the hosts in orange permanently to record the victory. Young and Burke both led the Lady Lions bats with two hits each.

Cowburn dominated all night long in the circle, holding the Lady Redskins to just three hits at the plate behind 15 strikeouts to seal the shutout on the field.

Wellsville’s regular season will reach its conclusion tonight over the road, as they prepare to visit the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. battle.

Friendship 5, Cuba-Rushford 4

FRIENDSHIP — In recent seasons, Nevaeh Ross has begun to bloom into a superstar that all of Allegany County has kept an eye on, particularly in the softball arena. The Friendship phenom has become one to watch, and for many good reasons as one of, if not, the County’s top pitcher this season. When a visit with Cuba-Rushford came on Tuesday, she backed that all up with her best performance of her young career.

The Lady Golden Eagles ace was simply unstoppable from within the circle, as she only allowed five baserunners across all seven innings with the Lady Rebels. Although some late baserunning saw the visitors in gray and blue cut their deficit down to as little as one, Ross kept her composure until the end, compiling a career-high 20 strikeouts and four walks to propel Friendship toward what was a 5-4 edging of Cuba-Rushford.

Ross was on the cusp of recording a no-hit performance when it carried into the seventh inning for Cuba-Rushford’s last-ups of the game, and a 5-1 lead in hand. But a lead-off single off the bat of Ella Jaffe played spoiler and ended the bid, setting up what was a three-run inning led by their legs, scoring all three runs off special teams to cut Friendship’s (6-2) lead to one.

But with Cuba-Rushford right on their coattails, the Friendship defense would prevail, as Ross fielded a groundball to second to record the force out, ending what was a remarkable outing of pitching in one-hit fashion.

On offense, all four hits that Friendship tallied on offense was recorded from within their four-run first inning to start the game hot, as Claire Calhoun provided two of those hits, scoring a run along the way. Maddie Lerro chipped in with an RBI double, while Kendra Gleason had a single to pitch in for the hosts in purple and gold.

Cuba-Rushford (4-9) was led by Sydney Howard, who struck out seven and walked four in her five innings of relief inside the circle.

Friendship will go for their fourth straight win when Thursday approaches, as they host Whitesville in a 5 p.m. contest, while Cuba-Rushford heads back home to conclude their regular season with the Wellsville Lady Lions in town for a 5 p.m. visit tonight.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Friendship/Scio 1

CUBA — The battle was on between both Friendship/Scio and Cuba-Rushford when the two foes met on Tuesday. It was safe to say that for most of the game, both teams with their ace-in-the-hole on the mound — Cam Loucks and Trent Chamberlain, it was a back and forth battle through and through.

As to who would outduel the other? That question would be answered coming down the homestretch with both the Golden Eagles and Rebels tied up at one each. With time running out to fuel a go-ahead response, one team provided such. That being the hosts in blue and maroon, who came across two big runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to jump ahead, allowing Chamberlain to finish off what became his Senior Night win on the mound in their 3-1 win over Friendship/Scio.

“Tonight was pretty close to Trent’s best game of the season. He and Cam were both tough on the mound tonight. Both showed good control of their fastball and curveball,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “Friendship/Scio had their first two runners on in the sixth and Logan (Lewis) threw out both guys on steals to kill the rally, and those were two huge throws. It was Senior Night for us, and it was a Sectional-like game. Both teams had their pitcher on the mound, so it was a battle. I was very happy to walk away with a win for our Seniors. They deserved it.”

It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the third inning when Cuba-Rushford (9-4) cracked open the ice with a 1-0 lead with an RBI that scored Ethan Rix. But it was not long after until Friendship/Scio tied things up at one with an RBI of their own, with Hunter Beckman providing it off a single to plate John Outman, who had a hit himself to chip in for the Golden Eagles to help power the offense.

With a 1-1 tie on the board, the Rebels saw an opportunity to strike down the homestretch. In the bottom of the fifth, they did just that with the game’s final two runs, with Logan Lewis and Benson McCumiskey both coming up with big RBI hits to pull the team ahead. From there, it was Chamberlain’s game to control until Jon White came on in the seventh inning to close the door on the fifth victory in the last six games for the Rebels, ending Friendship/Scio’s seven-game streak simultaneously.

Chamberlain was awarded the win behind his dynamic efforts on the rubber, as he and White held the Golden Eagles to just three hits with the senior recording 11 strikeouts and walking five to pick up the triumph. Rix would lead the bats with two of the team’s seven total, while Lewis tallying his an RBI off a double and McCumiskey off a single.

On the flip side, Loucks provided a solid showing of his own, as he went all seven innings for Friendship/Scio with five strikeouts and three walks. The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround back home in Friendship tonight, as they host Andover for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

As for the Rebels, they will hit the road for their last two games of the regular season beginning on Thursday when they visit Hinsdale in a 5 p.m. first pitch before closing out Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. first pitch in Wellsville.

Fillmore 11, Genesee Valley 0 (F-5)

FILLMORE — The bats came alive tremendously for the Eagles of Fillmore, recording what became an 11-run, 11-hit evening at the plate powered by Brent Zubikowski’s fifth home run of the season, which would end the game in the bottom of the fifth via 10-run rule, as they went on to roll past visiting Genesee Valley with an 11-0 shutout triumph on Tuesday.

Four different Eagles (7-4) recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate to help the cause on offense, with Zubikowski being amongst the group. After a scoreless first inning was exchanged by both teams, the hits began to rack up for the hosts in gray and green, as they kicked off the festivities with a three-run second inning that would grow insurmountably as the game went on, ultimately posting a four-run fourth inning that would set up shop for Zubikowski’s three-run blast to end the game.

Isaiah Voss, Luke Colombo and Mitch Ward all contributed at least a pair of hits to assist Fillmore’s offense. On the mound, Connor Potter went all five innings with four strikeouts in his back pocket while holding the Jaguars to just three hits worth of offense to earn the shutout.

On the other side, Genesee Valley (2-5) was led by Riley Gordon, Nate Slawson and Jesse Babbitt, who all had a hit each at the plate. Trent Scott struck out two and walked three in his two-inning start for the Jaguars, who head to Bolivar-Richburg for doubleheader action beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Bolivar-Richburg 14, Hinsdale 2 (F-5)

BOLIVAR — The Bolivar-Richburg offense was on fire across the board on Tuesday, scoring at least three runs in all four innings of offense they saw at the plate, ultimately forcing the 10-run rule along the way to wrap up shop on a 14-2 home victory over the visiting Bobcats of Hinsdale.

The Wolverines (9-4) accounted for 14 runs off 10 total hits at the plate, with the majority of their runs coming from within a five-run third inning that set up shop for the shortened victory in five innings. Trey Buchholz and Caden Allen each led the offense with a pair of hits, with Buchholz totaling three RBI and three runs scored, while Allen chipped in with two RBI and two runs of his own.

Camdyn MacDonell blasted a two-run triple to help further the cause, while Matt Mitchell had a hit to chip in. On the mound, Wyatt Karnuth picked up the victory with four strikeouts and two walks, as he combined with Brayden Ellis to hold the Bobcats to just three hits on the other side. For Hinsdale (1-8), Sam Cashimere, Tucker Schwartz and Zach Byrne all had a hit to record to pace the plate.

Andover 12, Whitesville 6

ANDOVER — All the Panthers of Andover needed to get the start they wanted was the very first inning of play. Out of 12 runs total, they would make their mark almost immediately with a nine-run frame that was headed by a big three-run blast off the bat of Kayden Zengerle, who also provided a solid outing on the hill in relief to help the hosts roll past visiting Whitesville on Tuesday with a 12-6 win.

After Andover (3-7) was able to kick the tires on their fast start, it would hold until Whitesville found a way to cut it back down to as low as three, scoring five runs in the top half of the fourth to narrow their margin down to 9-6 to get within reach of the Panthers. But with their final at-bats before the seventh, the hosts widened the lead back out once and for all with a three-run sixth inning to spring ahead toward victory, as they shut the Jays down in the seventh to do so.

Zengerle was one of three Andover hitters that recorded at least a pair of hits on offense, with Spencer and Landon Cook each adding two hits of their own. Spencer, along with Aiden Wagner, recorded a two-run single in the first inning to power up the offense to big success after the Zengerle home run. Landon would record a double and score two runs. On the mound, Zengerle picked up 10 strikeouts and seven walks in relief of Layton Miller, who was awarded the team’s win with four strikeouts and one walk in his two-inning start.

Whitesville (0-7) saw Troy Cogar record two of the team’s four total hits, both singles, while CJ Estep chipped in with a double and Gavin Cutler dished in a single of his own. On the mound, Brendal Jackson struck out three and walked six in his five-inning start for the Jays.

Both teams are back on the field tonight with 5 p.m. first pitches, as Andover looks to keep the momentum rolling into Friendship with a visit against Friendship/Scio, while Whitesville goes back home to host the Bulldogs of Belfast.
