Wednesday Roundup: Wellsville track sweeps regular season-ending tri-meet at Genesee Valley; Friendship shuts out Belfast to win Allegany County Division II title

BELMONT — If there was a way to close out a regular season slate on the track in style, it would be in sweeping fashion. When Wednesday came around, the Lions of Wellsville would do just that, as the boys and girls teams swept the competition over the road, recording all four victories in each division against both Scio and host Genesee Valley to finish their regular season on the strongest of notes.

On the boys side, the Lions were able to score five total first place finishes, all from the track, to go with multiple secondary finishes to assist in powering up their sweep of both Scio (70-57) and Genesee Valley (77-49), with Wyatt Scott leading the way with his pair of sweeping triumphs in both hurdling events, taking the edge in the 110 (19.7) and 400 hurdles (1:09.9).

Ben Jordan would add a first place finish of his own, taking the win in the 3200 run (13:01.2) while pitching in with the first leg in the team’s lone relay victory, coinciding with Eli Brophy, Noah Joslyn and JT Mariotti to deliver the 12:27.8 winning time in the 3200 relay. Gavin Dickerson rounded off Wellsville’s victories with a winning time in the 200 dash (27.0).

Scio would grab seven first place finishes to power up their second place finish in the meet, as they took the narrow 55-51 decision over the host Jaguars to do so. Leading the way for the Tigers was Ayden Faulkner, who recorded three first place finishes, two of them coming on the track with edges in both the 100 dash (12.2) and 400 dash (58.0), and his last from the field in the triple jump (37-5.25). Carter Silsby added two victories of his own in sweeping fashion, throwing medaling distances in the shot put (31-0) and discus (93-6).

Greg Silsby recorded the last two wins for the Tigers individually, both coming in the 800 (2:22.0) and 1600 runs (5:15.2).

Genesee Valley garnered just two individual finishes at the top to go with a pair of relay victories, totaling four on the day, as Morgan Torrey and Kaden Layman led the way with wins from the field in the high jump (5-8) and long jump (18-2) respectively. Layman would race a pair of legs in both of the winning relay events for the Jaguars, helping provide winning times in the 400 (54.7) and 1600 (4:16.0) relays.

In the girls division, the Lady Lions were dominant all night long, as they recorded 11 first place finishes in all with Brooklyn Stisser leading the way with three individual wins of her own all on the track, netting gold in the 100 (13.8), 200 (29.0) and 400 dashes (1:11.6). Hannah Dunaway added in two wins of her own, one from each side, medaling in the 1500 run (6:26.6) and pole vault (6-1). Dunaway would also race a leg in the team’s lone relay victory in the 1600 relay (5:08.9).

Other individual winners for the Lady Lions include: Cynthia Covell in the 3000 run (14:14.8), Carina Kling in the 400 hurdles (1:31.6), Stephanie Oswald in the discus (75-8) and Cameron Gordon in the long jump (11-5.75).

Scio would record the second place finish overall with their 37-16 win over the Lady Jaguars, led by four first place finishes total, with Melana Davenport, Jenn Dickens and Lexi Crossley all recording an individual medal, as they recorded wins in a respective basis in the 800 run (3:07.5), 100 hurdles (21.4) and triple jump (26-2.25). The three Lady Tigers would join Brooke Crossley in the 400 relay to collect their lone relay victory behind a winning time of 59.5.

Genesee Valley scored just one first place finish from Lizzy Bentley, who garnered the winning distance from the field in the shot put (28-9).

All three teams will meet again, along with the rest of the Allegany County competition field Saturday morning, as they conclude their regular seasons with the County Championship Meet in Wellsville beginning at 10 a.m.

C-R boys, Fillmore girls split tri-meet at Houghton College

HOUGHTON — The Cuba-Rushford boys and Fillmore girls track teams were deemed victorious at the end of their final regular season tri-meet on Wednesday, as the Rebels and Lady Eagles provided the pair of victories from within each division to split the meet right down the middle at Houghton College.

The Rebels came away with 64-24 and 69-22 victories to take the victory over both Fillmore and Houghton Academy in the boys division, garnering 10 total first place finishes on the day with four different performers recording a pair of wins.

Brayden Lavery, Hunter Williams, Josh Ward and Noah Seigel all led the field with two wins each, with Lavery helping propel the field from the track with his victories in the 100 (12.0) and 200 dashes (24.8). Seigel would follow suit with his two wins in the 400 dash (55.1) and 110 hurdles (17.0). From the field, it was Williams and Ward that provided the extra firepower, with Williams sweeping both throwing events with winning distances on the shot put (31-1.75) and discus (92-5), while Ward rounded off with wins in the high jump (5-4) and long jump (17-7).

Cuba-Rushford would also collect both relay victories along the way, taking the gold in the 400 (48.2) and 1600 (4:30.2) relays each.

Houghton Academy would provide the split after recording a 50-40 second place finish over the Eagles to do so, as the team saw Zach Tucker record two of their three first place finishes, running victoriously in both distance events — the 1600 (5:06.4) and 3200 runs (13:10.0). James Adenuga rounded off with his victory in the triple jump (31-6.25).

On the girls side, it was the Lady Eagles of Fillmore that came away with the overall first place finish, taking the win over both the Lady Rebels (52-46) and Lady Panthers (82-6) to do it. The team would record just three first place finishes, but would use multiple secondary finishes behind them to collect big points to help win the meet. Individually, it was Jessi Rust, Morgan Byer and Grace Russell that all had the wins for the Lady Eagles, as they were garnered in the 100 hurdles (20.0), high jump (4-5) and triple jump (26-1) respectively.

Cuba-Rushford recorded the second place finish overall with their additional 56-7 win over the Lady Panthers, as they scored seven first place finishes led by Natalie Goble, Tara Duvall and Hailey Kumpf, who all recorded two wins each to pace the Lady Rebels. From the track, Goble raced toward gold with winning times in the 100 (13.5) and 200 dashes (28.8), while Duvall provided a sweep of both throwing events with winning distances on the shot put (25-4) and discus (74-0).

Kumpf furthered the cause with a win on each side of the meet, recording hers in the 800 run (2:51.5), and from the field in the long jump (13-4.25). Libby Drum had the team’s final victory individually from the track, adding in her win in the 1500 run (5:47.5). The Lady Rebels would also score the meet’s lone relay victory, as Goble and Kumpf raced toward victory alongside Sofia Riquelme and Ava Belec in the 400 relay to deliver a medaling 54.8 time.

Houghton Academy was led by Nicole Torraca, who had the lone first place finish for the Lady Panthers from the track, in the 400 dash (1:08.0).

All three teams will reconvene with the rest of the Allegany County field Saturday morning, when all their seasons come to a close before Sectional competition kicks into gear, as they conclude with the County Championship Meet in Wellsville beginning at 10 a.m.

Boys Team Scores: Cuba-Rushford 64, Fillmore 24; Cuba-Rushford 69, Houghton Academy 22; Houghton Academy 50, Fillmore 40.

BASEBALL

Friendship/Scio 12, Andover 2 (F-5)

FRIENDSHIP — After falling to the hands of Cuba-Rushford just 24 hours ago over the road, Friendship/Scio returned home and proceed to shake it off with a big rebounding Allegany County League win over visiting Andover, as they started the first two innings with a 7-0 lead and never looked back on what became a 12-2 five-inning win over the Panthers on Wednesday.

Paired with a strong complete game one-hit gem from Cory Bolzan on the mound, the Golden Eagles (8-3) collected eight hits at the plate, with Cam Loucks and Joey Bednez each recording a pair to ignite the flame for the hosts in purple and gold. Loucks finished with a 2-for-2 outing that saw him end the game in the bottom of the fifth with a massive two-run blast, forcing the 10-run rule into effect. The senior would finish with three RBI in all and three runs scored.

Bednez recorded two hits and scored three runs of his own. On the mound, Bolzan kept Andover (3-8) on their toes for much of the day, holding the opposition to just one hit across seven strikeouts and two walks to pick up the victory. Bolzan’s no-hit bid was spoiled by Layton Miller — his opposing pitcher for much of the game, as he recorded Andover’s lone hit off a single.

Miller struck out five and walked two in his four inning start for the Panthers, who will conclude their regular season Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. road trip to Genesee Valley.

Friendship/Scio will look to lock up a piece of the Allegany County Division II crown back over the road tonight with a 5 p.m. first pitch in Whitesville.

HINSDALE — The Fillmore offense was red hot at the plate when they returned to action for their second game of three in a three-day stretch, as they propelled their way toward a rolling victory over host Hinsdale on Wednesday by accounting for at least a pair of runs in all five innings while holding the Bobcats in check in the midst of their 18-1 rout.

Four different Eagles (8-4) recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate, with Brent Zubikowski recording the big hit out of the bunch on a two-run single. Isaiah Voss and Mitch Ward each had two hits, both including a double, while Connor Potter rounded off with a pair of his own for the visitors in gray and green, who started the day hot with a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and held onto it for good.

On the mound, Aaron Buck went all five innings, striking out nine and walking only one to complete a three-hit gem. For Hinsdale (1-9), Sam Cashimere, Ethan Cashimere and Zach Byrne tallied all three of the team’s hits off singles, while Jake Elliott struck out four and walked five in his three-inning start on the hill for the Bobcats, who remain at home to host Cuba-Rushford at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Max Miller led the bats for the Bulldogs (5-5), recording three of the team’s eight in all to pair with his two runs scored. Carter Stout added to it with five runs of his own. On the mound, Matt Cater picked up the win with two strikeouts and walked three in his four-inning start.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 17, Cuba-Rushford 0 (F-5)

CUBA — The Lady Lions made sure their regular season was closed out on a massive note, as they forged an early lead that was extended upon insurmountably with 11 of their 17 runs coming in the fourth inning of play, helping them roll away toward a 17-0 shutout of the Lady Rebels over the road Wednesday night to wrap up with eight straight wins heading into Sectionals.

Wellsville (18-1) delivered a 17-run, 17-hit performance that was highlighted by multiple Lady Lions recording at least a pair of hits at the plate. Among them, Emma Dunaway, who was 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, two of them coming on a two-run single. Maddie Spicer and Brazen Beckwith each recorded a pair of hits, and three RBI, with Spicer driving in a pair off a double while Beckwith followed suit with a two-run single immediately after to help power up the team’s humongous fourth inning.

Makenzie Cowburn also had a two-run double to add in with her two-hit evening, driving in three RBI in all, while Marley Adams, Mallory Sibble and Matti Burke all had two hits to pitch in. In the circle, Marissa Ordway was given the nod and provided a one-hit shutout of Cuba-Rushford, striking out 11 to help wrap the Lady Lions regular season up in style.

Leading the Lady Rebels (5-10) was Elysa Tylor, who broke up Ordway’s no-hit bid on a pinch-hit single in the fourth inning. On the mound, Sydney Howard struck out two and walked six in her complete game.

The regular season has ended for both teams, as Wellsville finishes with a record of 18-1, while Cuba-Rushford concludes at 5-10 overall. Both teams will now await Sectional seeding, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Friendship 16, Belfast 0 (F-5)

FRIENDSHIP — If a 20-strikeout one-hit gem on Tuesday was not enough, one of Allegany County’s best pitchers came through with yet another extravagant performance.

From within the circle, as Friendship’s Nevaeh Ross controlled the game at her own pace, striking out 15 Lady Bulldogs at the plate while holding them hitless in all five innings, tossing a no-hitter to help the Lady Golden Eagles officially clinch the Allegany County Division II title all for themselves behind a 16-0 shutout at home on Wednesday.

The offense kicked into gear right away in the first two innings of play, as they capitalized on their hits as well as some key baserunning to keep the Belfast defense on their feet for much of the contest, scoring 12 of their 16 total runs inside that span to set the tone almost immediately. Of the hits, Ross went 2-for-3 with a double, while her sister Morghyn Ross had two hits of her own. Katherine Lamberson chipped in with a single.

Belfast (6-5) was led by Emma Sullivan, who struck out five and walked nine during her tenure on the mound. The Lady Bulldogs hit the road once more to close out their regular season with a 7 p.m. first pitch at home against Fillmore.

Friendship will reload and return to action with a pair of games tonight, beginning at home with a 5 p.m. matchup against Whitesville before hitting the road to take on Bolivar-Richburg later that night, at 7 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg 16, Genesee Valley 0 (F-5)

RICHBURG — The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg used all the offensive facets of the game to come out swinging against visiting Genesee Valley, using their legs to power up an early lead before the bats came alive later on, as they went on to coast past the Lady Jaguars with a 16-0 home victory in five innings on Wednesday.

All four runs that got the Lady Wolverines (11-2) started in the bottom of the second inning came off baserunning, using their speed to their advantage by recording runs off steals on home and passed balls to break the ice. The offense came into play a short time later in the third, when McKinlee Harris provided the 5-0 extension with an RBI single. After a Jessica Majot solo homer in the fourth widened the lead further, the game was broken open in the fifth with a 10-run frame that pushed their lead out permanently.

Among the Lady Wolverines, who had three different hitters record a pair of hits, was Madigan Harris, who helped fuel the massive 10-run stanza with a two-run double as a part of her two-hit night. Leading the bats was McKinlee, who went 3-for-5 in all, and scored twice. Malayna Ayers added in a double that was included in her two-hit effort. In the circle, McKinlee earned the win behind a two-hit shutout, fanning five Genesee Valley batters to do so.

On the other side, the Lady Jaguars saw Emera Aquila and Kayci Bigelow account for both of the team’s hits, with Aquila smashing a double. On the mound, Ashley Burrows struck out four and walked six in her complete game.

Both teams will reconvene at Genesee Valley to conclude their season series tonight with a 5 p.m. first pitch. Fillmore sweeps home twinbill with Whitesville

FILLMORE — With a quick 24 turnaround after falling to a late Genesee Valley rally over the road on Tuesday, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore went back home in hopes to bounce back with a full head of steam heading into Sectionals next week. With Whitesville in town for a pair, they would waste no time, as they mustered two quick starts on offense to spring out on top with a series sweep, flying toward 15-2 and 19-3 victories over the Lady Jays on Wednesday.

In game one, it belonged to Fillmore’s Kirstin Frazier on both sides of the spectrum, as the Lady Eagles (6-4) senior held Whitesville to just four hits while handing out three chairs inside the circle. At the plate, she collected a pair of doubles and drove in four total RBI to power the bats. Lizzy Nugent recorded a triple to help the cause for the hosts, who overcame a 2-0 early deficit by scoring six go-ahead runs in the second to pull ahead for good.

In the nightcap, more of the same for Fillmore, as they started with a back-and-forth battle with the Lady Jays (4-8) in the first two innings of play. But the tables were turned by the Lady Eagles, who scored 14 unanswered runs from the third inning until the end to bust the door wide open for good. Nugent was a contributing factor behind that success, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and seven total RBI.

Across both games for the Lady Eagles, Skylar Gaddy recorded three hits and drove in three runs, while Torann Wolfer was hot at the plate herself, driving in six runs off three hits. On the other side, Whitesville was led by Gabbi Hall, who had three hits including a triple, combined, while Rachel Jackson also provided three hits.

Both teams are back in action with their final games of the regular season tonight, as Fillmore stays home to host a 7 p.m. matchup under the lights against Belfast, while Whitesville heads over the road to Friendship for a 5 p.m. battle.

ANDOVER — The Lady Eagles of Alfred-Almond began to hit their stride as the game went forward over the road in Andover on Wednesday, scoring the game’s first nine runs to garner a massive lead on the host Lady Panthers, five of them coming from within the fourth inning to help extend a lead they never lost, as they rolled toward victory by an 11-1 count.

After Alfred-Almond tossed four shutout innings on defense, Andover (3-8) bounced back in the bottom of the sixth to erase the goose egg with their lone run coming in to score. On offense, the Lady Panthers collected five hits with Katie Calladine and Makaila Brewster each tallying two, while Olivia Hanks had the last to add in off a single of her own.
