Thursday Roundup: B-R, Scio battle through competitive 1st half, end with 1-1 tie; Fillmore, And/Whi boys tally shutout victories
SCIO — Unlike the previous matchup, the Wolverines and Tigers fought tooth and nail all throughout the 100 minutes posted on the scoreboard.
After a 5-1 victory for Bolivar-Richburg the first time around, Scio would force a decisive 1-1 tie with their opposition for the remainder of the game with a big goal toward the end of the first half.
“It's a big improvement. I was happy with the first half, it was the best first half of the season by far,” Tigers coach Dillon McFall said. “12 guys for 100 minutes, sometimes it doesn't end well, but we ended up with a tie. We got beat 5-1 the first time around in Bolivar, and they beat us down. It wasn't a contest at all. We competed hard this time around, and that's how we have to play, and we have to keep making improvements and stepping.”
The Tigers (2-4-2) were on the button early in the first half, providing several chances in front of the Bolivar-Richburg net to get their offensive efforts off onto the right foot, including a big chance on a Cam Loucks-to-Corey Field connection that went just wide of the cage.
After a pair of Jordan Lewis corners that went wide for Scio and after the brief mask break at the midway mark, it was the Wolverines (3-2-2) that got on the board first in the middle of a scrum in front of the Tigers net.
Bolivar-Richburg caught the Tigers defense off guard in the defensive zone, resulting in a Jason Greeson pass over to Jarrod Polk to his left, where he was able to put the ball past Cory Bolzan in goal and to the near right side to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead.
Afterwards, Scio went back to mounting the chances on the Wolverines goal, but were able to come up with a big play of their own with 31 seconds left in the half. With a tripping penalty coming inside the box, it set up a penalty kick, which was capitalized upon by Cam Loucks for his fifth goal of the season to tie the game, ultimately for good.
“We had great energy in the first half. It was nice to get the equalizer from Cam, as well as a few more chances in the second half after that,” said McFall. “Cam had a nice direct kick on overtime to try and win it for us. It was a great chance in front, and the ball just went wide. We put together a couple nice passes down field to keep adding more chances. Bolivar had some nice chances as well, and Cory came up big with some saves as well.”
When it was all said and done, Bolivar-Richburg outshot Scio by a 12-8 total count. Bolzan made 11 saves in all for the Tigers, while Wayne Karnuth made five stops for the Wolverines.
Both teams are back in action with a pair of 7 p.m. contests after the weekend on Monday, as Scio welcomes in Cuba-Rushford, while Bolivar-Richburg heads back home to host red hot, and undefeated Fillmore.
Fillmore 3, Genesee Valley 0
BELMONT — Mitch Ward continues to show why he is Allegany County’s leading goal scorer on the soccer field, as he added two more goals for the Eagles of Fillmore, helping them blank host Genesee Valley with a 3-0 shutout along the way.
“We fought Fillmore hard, and we had a few scoring opportunities early on,” said Jaguars coach Ryan McKnight. “We just couldn’t finish. That has been an issue for us all season. Fillmore is a great team, and they have some great ball players that can execute very well.”
Ward’s first goal and 13th of the season came with 6:25 left in the opening half of play, taking a Graham Cahill pass from center and burying it to the back of the Genesee Valley netting. The lead was extended with 65 seconds left to go when he took another pass, this one from the foot of Matt Hatch to make it a two-goal lead at the break for the Eagles (7-0).
Later on, the icing on the cake was frosted on by Isaiah Voss in the last 15 minutes of play, as Ward dished out an assist to complete his five-point night for Fillmore. In goal, Dylan Valentine led the defensive effort with a four-save shutout.
On the other side, Keegan McKnight made six saves for the Jaguars (2-4-2).
Both teams return to the field Monday night with 7 p.m. contests, as Fillmore goes for eight straight on the road at Bolivar-Richburg, while Genesee Valley gets back onto their homefield to welcome in Wellsville.
Andover/Whitesville 3, Friendship 0
ANDOVER — The Panthers of Andover/Whitesville found their rhythm on the offensive front Thursday night back home against Friendship, as they managed to wrap up the home-at-home series with a 3-0 shutout.
Two of the three goals netted by the Panthers (2-4-1) were scored in the first half of play, both in a five minute span by Spencer Cook, as he took two unassisted runs past the Friendship defense and in for the score each time.
Just past the halfway mark in the second half, Ethan Lewis wrapped up the scoring for the hosts in purple with an unassisted goal himself at the 16:28 mark.
Colby Gaines recorded the victory in goal, stopping three shots. On the other end, Atlin Moore made 19 saves for the Golden Eagles (0-5), who will end their four-game, four-night span tonight in Hinsdale for a 7 p.m. battle.
Andover/Whitesville will head into the weekend on a high note, as they look to continue finding the win column Wednesday night back home against Houghton Academy at 6 p.m.
