Wednesday Soccer: Russell, Templeton score twice for Fillmore to remain unbeaten at 8-0 with 6-1 victory over GV
FILLMORE — For the second straight game, it was all about starting fast for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore.
After scoring a pair of goals in two separate one-minute instances in their 7-1 victory over Franklinville on Monday, they continued the red hot start with a goal in the first six minutes of each half in their home game with Genesee Valley on Wednesday, as they powered their way toward a 6-1 victory to remain unbeaten.
“We've had this relentless mentality, and it's been impressing me lately,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “They just don't quit. They try to stick with the game plan. Sometimes it's not working, but it overwhelms sometime and in that one, two minute spurt is where we will get the goals. That can be tough for teams to overcome, and that's kind of how we've played all year. It's taken over the game.”
Fillmore (8-0) was able to get things started with a 3-1 lead at the half with Sophia Templeton scoring the first goal of the game at the six minute mark, taking a pass from Grace Russell, who had three assists in all for the Lady Eagles, and buried it to the back of the netting.
Genesee Valley (5-2) five minutes later, formulated a response in the form of Savannah Werner, as she tied the game up for just a moment, as Fillmore responded almost immediately after the kick at center with Russell taking a Shelby Beardsley pass from center to net the go-ahead goal at the 12 minute mark.
With nearly 10 minutes left in the half, the Lady Eagles extended their lead to a pair with Hope Russell’s 11th of the season off a pass from Grace. The momentum continued into the beginning of the second half, when Templeton scored her second goal at the six minute mark of the new session off a Rachel Hatch feed.
“At the right times. Scoring early sets the tone, and we came out in each half immediately,” Beardsley said. “When you do that, and teams are hoping that it's their half and you end up punching it in early, it's deflating. No matter what team it is. If you get scored on quick, it's a bit of a deer-in-the-headlights look.”
Beardsley added, “A lot of different girls are contributing in all different ways. We're able to move people around. If we have to move people around and attack in different areas, we're able to do that. We did that twice tonight. Sophia started at center-mid, got a goal and then made the switch with Grace, and she ended up scoring. It takes other teams to adjust to our adjustments, and when they do that, is when we usually find a way to score.”
The scoring continued three minutes later, seeing Fillmore take a 5-1 lead over the Lady Jaguars, as Grace Russell added to her County-leading goal count with her 12th on a pass from Hope Russell in the midst of a scrum in front of the net. Grace would finish with a seven-point night in the books - two goals, and three assists.
Shelby Beardsley, who remains red hot for the Lady Eagles since Monday, added a goal to go with her assist from earlier in the game, taking a pass from behind, from Grace Russell to carry in and knock it through toward an empty net after Ashley Burrows came out of the goal to challenge the shot.
Beardsley’s three-point night for the Lady Eagles was added on top of a big four assist night she had against Franklinville. As for her coach, Beardsley said that her senior has been the glue that’s held his midfield together.
“Shelby's our senior leader in the middle of the field,” he said. “She's played outside-mid for her entire career, ever since ninth grade and it's something we've needed after we lost nine seniors last year. Eight of them starters. We needed that reassurance up the field, and we have some special skilled players around the field surrounding her. Shelby's our glue, and it's all effort with her. That facilitates to the rest of the team, and it's the little things that people may not notice all the time, but us coaches notice it very well.”
The visitors would add one last score with under a minute remaining off a penalty kick, as Lizzy Bentley did the honor of knocking the ball far post behind Preslee Miller to give the team the goal.
In all, Fillmore outshot Genesee Valley by a 21-8 count on the field, with Miller earning the win in goal, as she recorded eight saves. On the other end, Burrows set aside 17 shots for the Lady Jaguars.
Both teams are back on the field Friday night, as Fillmore heads out to pay a visit to Bolivar-Richburg for a 6 p.m. showdown, while Genesee Valley looks to bounce back at 7 p.m. with Wellsville in town.
Wellsville 1, Cuba-Rushford 1
CUBA — Wellsville and Cuba-Rushford have already had an epic clash right at the beginning of the season inside the Lion’s Den. The two teams met again in Cuba, Wednesday night, and it was only appropriate for the two teams to force extra time again.
Only this time, the fireworks would come at the very end of the game. Two goals were scored in the final three minutes of double overtime. But it was a goal for each side of the field, as the Lady Lions and Lady Rebels fought their way through some wild extra sessions to conclude the festivities with a 1-1 tie.
“I’m really proud of how our girls played,” Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight said. “It was a great game. Both sides played hard, and it was one that was fun to be a part of. We scored in double overtime first, and then they did right before the game ended. It was crazy.”
It was a close battle all game long, with both teams fighting their way across 80 minutes to win the battle. There was no clear cut winner after regulation, so for the second time in their two-game set, Wellsville and Cuba-Rushford made their way to extra time.
In double overtime, the Lady Rebels (1-5-1) were the first team to strike, as Taylor Searle found the back of the net with 2:30 left on the clock. With the lead in their hands, the hosts looked to maintain it in the waning minutes.
But Wellsville (1-4-2) was able to find a way to net the game-sealing goal, as Marley Adams made a 50-yard run down the field. Dribbling with it, Adams was able to beat the clock and put the ball past Tara Duvall in the Cuba-Rushford goal with just a single second remaining to force the deadlock.
Wellsville managed to outshoot Cuba-Rushford by an 11-8 count in the shot department. In goal, Makenna Dunbar made five saves for the Lady Lions, while Duvall settled with 10 saves for the Lady Rebels.
Both teams are back on the field Friday night, as Wellsville heads off to Genesee Valley for a 7 p.m. meeting under the lights, while Cuba-Rushford heads out to Hinsdale for a meeting at 5 p.m.
Bolivar-Richburg 2, Hinsdale 1
HINSDALE — The Lady Wolverines have struggled for much of the season with missing bodies excluded from the lineup. Wednesday night, the long wait was over, as Bolivar-Richburg finally made their way back to full strength on the field.
With a road trip to Hinsdale on the docket, they provided perhaps their best game of the season in head coach Mark Emery’s eyes, as they held the host Lady Bobcats in check all game long before their shutout was ruptured at the very end, taking the 2-1 victory upon their return home.
“It was wonderful to finally be getting back to full strength. We were actually only down one player tonight, and we played 15. I felt our passing and overall play was the best it has been all season,” Emery said. “The crazy thing, me and Justin (Thomas) talked about this, it still seems early in the season and we’re actually halfway in. I will take nothing away from Hinsdale on their goal right at the end, but I felt it reminded me on our part, of an early season misstep.”
McKinlee Harris was responsible for both Bolivar-Richburg (4-2) goals in the contest, both scored in the first half. Her first came just over the 10 minute mark, as she took a pass from Paitlyn Johnston at center and put it away.
Right before the half, Harris knocked in her second goal off a pass from Madigan Harris to extend the team’s lead to a pair with 12:03 remaining. From halftime forward, it was on the defense to hold Hinsdale (1-5-1) in check for the rest of the way, but the shutout would find its end with 25 seconds left to play, as Ava Belec netted her fourth of the season.
Bolivar-Richburg’s defense did not allow a single corner kick opportunity to arise in the 80 minute session, compared to their eight on the offensive attack. Altogether, the Lady Wolverines led in the shot department by a 17-5 count.
Paige Taylor earned the win for the visitors with three saves, while Haylee Jozwiak made 12 saves for the Lady Bobcats.
Both teams are back on the field Friday night, as Hinsdale welcomes in Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. meeting, while Bolivar-Richburg gets set for a big battle with their rivals - unbeaten Fillmore at Dunsmore-Latimer Field at 6 p.m.
“it is my hope with more eligible players available this time around, we can play better than we did our first outing with Fillmore,” said Emery. “They are in first place in our league for a reason, and we will need our A+ game on Friday.”
Andover/Whitesville 7, Friendship 0
ANDOVER — Zoey Lee and Kelsie Niedermaier led a high-octane Andover/Whitesville offense toward victory on Wednesday, as the pair of Lady Panthers collaborated to score a pair of goals to set the pace on their 7-0 shutout of visiting Friendship.
The Lady Panthers (4-1) got off to a scorching hot start to their game in the first half of play, scoring five of their seven goals in the first 40 minutes of play, three of them being scored in just under a 10 minute span.

Gabby Terhune and Zoey Lee followed with goals of their own, which featured a Kelsie Niedermaier assist on Lee’s first goal.
Just past the halfway mark of the period, Andover/Whitesville scored two more goals in a span of three minutes from Niedermaier and Lee, with Katherine Reilly getting the assist on Lee’s second of the game to finish the first half scoring with a five-goal advantage.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers wrapped up the scoring with two final goals - Niedermaier’s second on an assist from Terhune, and one from Grace Fry with 15 seconds left to play, picking up a Kate Pensyl pass.

Altogether, Andover/Whitesville outshot Friendship (1-4-1) by a 23-5 margin, with Livia Simon picking up the shutout with all five saves. On the other end, Navaeh Ross stopped 17 shots for the Lady Golden Eagles.
Both teams will meet right back in Andover, Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. kick. Beforehand, Friendship will return home to welcome in Belfast for a 5 p.m. matchup on Friday.

BELFAST — Five different scorers got on the board for the Bulldogs of Belfast, as they got back into the win column for the first time in nearly a week, Wednesday night, rolling their way toward a 5-0 shutout of visiting Friendship.
