Thursday Roundup: Polk, Danaher help Wolverines pitch shutout on road over ND-Batavia; Templeton’s four assists pace 6-0 Fillmore shutout over B-R
BATAVIA — The Bolivar-Richburg defense, since the start of the season, has been absolutely relentless. They capitalize on what they do best — working the edge, applying pressure and getting after the quarterback and the backfield.
Last week in their 56-0 shutout over Clyde-Savannah, the Wolverines only allowed 40 total yards, including -3 rushing yards. In a short week, they did not lose sleep, as they used their defense as their best offense, holding host Notre Dame-Batavia to just 51 yards of total offense, including negative yards from the backfield while the offense grabbed two quick scores in the first half to set up a 14-0 shutout over the Irish on Thursday.
“We felt like we were in control of the whole game. The guys certainly rallied around on defense, and our front four are incredible difference makers,” Wolverines coach Steve Smith said. “They are absolutely incredible at getting after the quarterback, and the backfield. We’re pretty athletic, and they’re the same kids on offense. It’s not like we’re much better on defense than offense. It’s high school football, but we are certainly pleased with the outcome.”
After losing a fumble on their first drive of the game, the Wolverines (3-1) responded quickly on their next possession with the first score. With a big punt return leading the visitors in white and red all the way to midfield, they used their backfield to their advantage, garnering a series of runs, including a long 17-yard run from Rudy Polk to set up his score from 11 yards out to take the lead.
In the second quarter, the run game authored another scoring drive that took up much of the quarter before halftime approached. The drive would conclude with Landon Danaher getting Bolivar-Richburg’s second touchdown from 21 yards away to extend their lead by two possessions at the break.
Bolivar-Richburg would go on to garner several opportunities to add to their lead in the second half, including one in the third quarter on fourth down, when Brayden Ellis delivered a heave toward the end zone to Polk, but was intercepted inside the 5-yardline. But in turn, the Wolverines defense would stand up the Irish offense once more with a three-and-out after the turnover.
In the fourth quarter, the Wolverines saw three more chances off three Notre Dame-Batavia interceptions to build to their lead, but the Irish defense held the offense at a standstill, while on the other side, the Bolivar-Richburg defense returned the favor by holding their opposition still to keep their shutout in tact for the remainder of the contest.
“We had a lot of opportunities, especially toward the end, but a win is a win,” said Smith. “Notre Dame played very well, and from the stats, it was a bend-don’t-break type of defense that we had going on out there. We were moving the ball really well, and then we got bogged down in the second half. It seemed like every possession, we would get rolling, and then we had a play or two that would just stop us.”
The Wolverines collected 260 total yards on offense, the majority coming from the back field led by Danaher, who rushed 20 times for 105 yards and his score, while Polk added in 14 carries for 58 yards and a score. Kadin Tompkins also carried 14 times for 57 yards. The same three Wolverines rushers all recorded an interception against the Notre Dame-Batavia offense to help fuel the defense. On the line, Trent Sibble helped stymie the Irish with five tackles and a sack.
Next Friday night will be Homecoming for the Wolverines back home at Dunsmore-Latimer Field, as they now go for their fourth straight win with York/Pavilion coming to town in a 7 p.m. visit.

GIRLS SOCCER
Wellsville 1, Wayland-Cohocton 0
COHOCTON — Talk about striking while the iron was red hot, Thursday night. At the Cohocton Sports Complex, the Lady Lions of Wellsville went on to do so.
Just 60 seconds into the game, the ball found its way into the back of the Wayland-Cohocton cage to give them the early lead. And it was one they held all game long, as they looked to their defense to hold it and the host Lady Eagles at a standstill for the remainder of the way, as Wellsville successfully bounced back from Tuesday’s 1-0 shutout to Cuba-Rushford with a 1-0 shutout of their own over the road.
The Lady Lions (3-5) and their lone goal came right from the get-go on a play that was centralized in the Wayland-Cohocton box. Soon after, it would formulate a scrum around the ball, which would ultimately find its way into the Lady Eagles net to give them the 1-0 lead they would hold until the end of the game.
Jaylynn Mess was credited with the night’s lone goal, as it was one of 16 total shots Wellsville applied to the Wayland-Cohocton cage. In goal, Makenna Dunbar secured the win with her gloves, making all nine stops she saw for the visitors.
The Lady Lions continue their road trip Saturday evening with a 5 p.m. contest in store against the undefeated Lady Eagles of Fillmore.
Genesee Valley/Belfast 2, Cuba-Rushford 1
BELMONT — It was a storm that both teams had to weather through the first half of play. Between both Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley/Belfast, it was a scoreless tie they were looking to end in the final 40 minute session on Thursday.
They would do just that, but the hosts had the honor of doing so first. Not just once, but twice.
Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to find a way to break the chains on a scoreless deadlock just past the first few minutes of the second half, and they have Hannah Southwick-Powers to thank for it, as she scored both of the team’s goals in a span of six minutes to pull them ahead for good, despite some pressure down the stretch, to take the 2-1 edge over the Lady Rebels.
“It was nice to find the back of the net twice tonight,” GV/Belfast co-coach Lisa Scott-Schneider said. “Scoring has been something that we’ve been struggling with lately. Hannah notched two nice goals, and hopefully she gave us a little extra push to build off this when we play Wellsville this time next week. The defense had a great night tonight, but the (Taylor) Searle girl delivered a great ball to put the pressure on late. But, we were able to hold the line in the end.”
The first goal for Southwick-Powers came just past the 10 minute mark of the second half, as she broke the ice for Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-3) with her first off a pass provided by Alicia Borden from the back to find the back of the Cuba-Rushford netting for the lead. At the 23:26 mark, a big piece of insurance was added when she made a run in by herself, dribbling toward the Lady Rebels goal to put her second of the game away.
Not even five minutes after the second tally, the Lady Rebels (4-4) were able to put the pressure on late with Taylor Searle’s goal, as she outran the Genesee Valley/Belfast defense on her way in to deliver a goal that cut their deficit in half. But in the end, the hosts in green and black were able to stave off the late bid, and keep their lead in tact.
Genesee Valley/Belfast outshot Cuba-Rushford by a 9-5 count with Ashley Burrows recording the win in goal, stopping four shots. On the other side, Tara Duvall made six saves for the Lady Rebels, who return home to host Bolivar-Richburg in a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday.
The Lady Jagdogs will return to the Jungle just under a week from now, as they look to keep their winning ways moving along with the Wellsville Lady Lions in for a 7 p.m. visit under the lights on Wednesday.
Fillmore 6, Bolivar-Richburg 0
BOLIVAR — Sophia Templeton was a blaze that simply could not be put out for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore, as she scored one of the team’s six goals while handing out assists on four more to complete what was a massive six-point night to help fuel a 6-0 shutout over the road on Thursday against the host Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg.
Templeton began her contributions in the first four minutes of play for the Lady Eagles (8-0), handing out two of her four helpers off back-to-back trips into the Bolivar-Richburg zone, as Zoe Beardsley and Hope Russell came away with goals to put the visitors in white and green up by a pair.
Grace Russell would then score the next two in a row to extend Fillmore’s lead to four, ending the first half with a 3-0 lead with her first coming at the 10 minute mark off Templeton’s third assist before hooking back up with her senior teammate one last time right out of the gate in the second half to record her second of the contest.
At the 10 minute mark, Templeton made her way onto the scoresheet with a goal of her own, as Grace Russell repaid the favor with an assist of her own up the field to hold a 5-0 lead for the majority of the half. The scoring concluded with three minutes left to play with Rachel Hatch recording the team’s final goal off a Hope Russell helper.
In all, the Lady Eagles propelled the offense toward a 22-shot night while allowing just four from the Lady Wolverines (4-3) the opposite direction. Between the posts, Preslee Miller would make all four stops to tally the shutout. On the other side, Madison Carney made 13 saves for Bolivar-Richburg.
Both teams are back on the field Saturday, as the Lady Eagles return home to host the Wellsville Lady Lions in a 5 p.m. battle, while the Lady Wolverines look to get back on track on the road themselves, visiting Cuba-Rushford for a 12 p.m. first kick against the host Lady Rebels.
Friendship/Scio 4, Mount Morris 1
MOUNT MORRIS — On the board first were the Mount Morris Lady Blue Devils, scoring the icebreaker off a corner kick in the Friendship/Scio zone to take the early lead.
But it was the only goal they scored, as Friendship/Scio provided a fast and massive response back with Logan Roberts immediately tying the game on her goal from Lexi Crossley, who had a big night all around for the visitors to set up shop on four unanswered goals to take home the 4-1 win on Thursday.
Friendship/Scio (3-6) was given the lead for good on Melana Davenport’s netter later on in the first half off of Crossley’s second assist to give them the 2-1 lead over Mount Morris heading into the break. In the second half, it was all Crossley on offense, as she added to the one-goal lead with two more goals of her own, connected with Davenport on her first, and then digging the ball out in front of the Lady Blue Devils goal off a corner kick to score her second to wrap up shop.
Nevaeh Ross did not make a save in goal for Friendship/Scio, as they now get ready to hit the road once more after the weekend, taking on the Hammondsport Lady Lakers in a 6:30 p.m. contest on Monday.

SWIMMING
Lady Lions move to 5-0 with road win over Hornell
HORNELL — The road swing for the Lady Sea Lions of Wellsville carried on from Dansville back down south to Hornell on Thursday, and just like their last meet, it was one that they continued to take care of business in, as they set the tone immediately with a first half sweep of events before adding in two last victories to roll past the Lady Red Raiders with an 87-49 win.
“It was another great meet, and League win to get to 5-0,” Lady Sea Lions coach Steve Hand said. “Tonight, some girls looked to swim new events to qualify for Sectionals, and some look to make earlier times a little faster. We came away with a few of both. Morgan (Mattison) went from sprinting to distance tonight, and she swam well. Hayden (Waldon) had a good swim and time in the 200 IM. Grace (Kinnicutt) got under 29 seconds in the 50, and Ashley (Oswald) had some great dives off the board. I’d like to see some faster relay times, but I hope they come.”
Six different Lady Sea Lions (5-0) all recorded individual triumphs to go with their lone relay victory, as the team of Grace Kinnicutt, Allie Bidzerkowny, Tiernee Brandes and Isabelle Hart started the meet off with the 200 medley relay’s winning time of 2:18.37. Kinnicutt and Brandes would also chip in with an individual victory each, with Kinnicutt garnering hers in the 50 freestyle (28.89), and Brandes later on in the 100 freestyle (1:01.26).
Morgan Mattison, Hayden Waldon and Ashley Oswald assisted in furthering the cause in the first half to complete the sweep with wins of their own, as Mattison followed the 200 medley relay win up with a 200 freestyle victory (2:19.10), while Waldon and Oswald triumphed in the 200 individual medley (2:32.17), and off the diving board (180.00) respectively.
Kaelyn Crawford had Wellsville’s final individual victory overall in the meet, as she chipped in with a 100 butterfly victory (1:18.23).
The Lady Sea Lions are back in the water this weekend over the road once more, as they visit Salamanca for an 11:30 a.m. swim.
