BOYS SOCCER

Bolivar-Richburg 3, Cuba-Rushford 1

CUBA — Right inside the first 10 minutes of the game, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford were able to get their hands on a quick start. It was a lead that they would hold for much of the half until Bolivar-Richburg found a way to tie the game to enter the half.

The deadlocking goal would wind up providing the Wolverines with a little bit of momentum going into the final 40 minute session, as they went on to unbuckle Cuba-Rushford from the driver’s seat with the go-ahead goal off a penalty kick before putting the game away officially with one last goal to secure a 3-1 road win over the Rebels, Friday evening.

Jacob Smith was responsible for getting Cuba-Rushford (3-5) off and running with a 1-0 lead on his unassisted tally at the 30:09 mark. With 10 minutes remaining, the Wolverines would tie the game at one behind Aydin Sisson’s goal off a pass from the back by Wyatt Karnuth with 11:09 left in the opening frame.

Going into the second half with newly built momentum, Bolivar-Richburg (6-3-1) used it to their fullest advantage when a penalty kick arose within the first 10 minutes, which was ultimately capitalized upon by Hunter Stuck to propel the visitors into the lead.

The game was put on ice with 49 seconds left in the game by Reiss Gaines and his goal, as Evan Pinney dished along the pass to seal the deal on Bolivar-Richburg’s bounce back victory after being shutout by Fillmore back on Wednesday.

In goal, David Abdo earned the win behind his eight-save performance, while Jarrett Campbell knocked away six shots on the other side for the Rebels.

Both teams are back on the field Tuesday night, as the Wolverines return home to welcome in Houghton Academy for a 5 p.m. contest, while Cuba-Rushford looks to bounce back on the road with a 7 p.m. visit to Scio.
