Wednesday Roundup: Ward records 2nd half hat trick in 6-0 shutout for Eagles over B-R; Schwartz delivers OT goal for Hinsdale to top Scio

FILLMORE — A door was opened in the first half for the Eagles of Fillmore. After gaining traction on the upper hand over visiting Bolivar-Richburg, a chance to make some noise in the second half came about.

Despite the soggy conditions on a rainy Wednesday evening under the lights, the host Eagles would do just that, as they scored their last four goals of the game in the remaining 40 minute session to pull away from the Wolverines insurmountably to record their fifth consecutive victory behind a 6-0 shutout.

Zach Sisson had a hand in the first three goals for Fillmore (7-2), scoring the icebreaker off a feed from Mitch Ward in the middle. Sisson would then hand out two assists of his own, including the team’s second goal by Noorideen Musaid-Omar to extend the lead to a pair before the half reached its conclusion, and later on to Layton Sanasith in the second half to branch it even more.

From the 3-0 lead forward, the rest of the offense laid solely in the hands of Mitch Ward, who went on to record a second half hat trick with helpers from Musaid-Omar and Matt Majoris on his last two goals to give the Eagles all the room they needed to record the victory. The six goals would come on 15 total shots on net, as they outshot Bolivar-Richburg (5-3-2) by a 15-3 count.

In goal, Mike McCumiskey recorded the shutout by making all three stops, while David Abdo made nine saves on the other end for the Wolverines, who are back in action on the road Friday night, visiting Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. first kick.

Fillmore will go for their sixth straight win back on their home turf Saturday evening under the lights, as they host the Wellsville Lions in a 7 p.m. battle.

Wellsville 2, Jasper-Troupsburg 1

TROUPSBURG — The Lions of Wellsville traveled over the road Wednesday night, and returned home victorious, as they edged their way past host Jasper-Troupsburg with a 2-1 triumph.

The Lions (4-3-1) led the way on offense with a narrow 9-8 outshooting of the Wildcats. Goal-scorers were not made available.

Wellsville will continue their road swing Saturday night, as they pay a visit to the Fillmore Eagles, winners of five straight, on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Hinsdale 2, Scio 1 (F-OT)

SCIO — A tale of two halves was told under the lights in Scio, Wednesday night. One team managed to catch their stride in the first 40 minutes, while the other, turned the tables later on in the second half.

As a result, it would force overtime between the visiting Bobcats of Hinsdale and the host Tigers. The teams would battle across the midfield for much of the first sudden victory session, but an opening was created. And it was by the team that shifted the momentum in their favor.

In the end, Tucker Schwartz was the hero for Hinsdale.

After a quick strike to tie the game at one in the earliest stage of the second half, the Bobcats were stride for stride with the Tigers all the way down to the finish line. With just over a minute remaining in the first extra session, the Bobcats senior made sure the momentum stood in their favor, blasting the game-winner to complete the comeback victory for Hinsdale’s fifth in first six games, remaining red hot with a 2-1 overtime victory.

“In the first half, we played pretty well,” said Tigers coach Dillon McFall. “We controlled the game and we outworked them. Then in the second half, it was a completely different story. That was the big difference in the game, and in a game like this where you miss on a big play, it’s going to hurt really bad. The result stings. The story of the game is that it was a tale of two halves. We can’t play a game like that.”

Off a direct kick chance in the Hinsdale zone, the Tigers (3-5) were able to get the icebreaker past the midway mark of the opening half, as Brendan Loucks connected with it to send the ball sailing in on the Bobcats goal, and past Ethan Cashimere in between the posts to take the game’s first lead.

It was an advantage they held until the very first minute of the second half, when Hinsdale (5-1) provided a big response to tie the game up at one with Damion Brown’s goal coming almost immediately after the opening kick, scoring on his run to the Scio cage 48 ticks in to create the deadlock.

The tie would last for the remainder of regulation to force overtime, where after a midfield battle between both squads, Schwartz was able to create a massive opening in the Scio defense to put his shot past Landon Arnold in goal to end the game for the Bobcats, collecting their fifth win in their first six games along the way.

Hinsdale narrowly outshot Scio on the offensive front by a 9-8 count, with Cashimere picking up the victory behind seven saves. Arnold would also set aside seven shots on the other side for the Tigers, who are now off until Tuesday night when they host Cuba-Rushford in another 7 p.m. first kick under the lights.

Hinsdale will now look to keep their hot streak alive back home Friday night, when they host Andover/Whitesville in a 5 p.m. contest.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 6, Cuba-Rushford 2

BELMONT — The bar was set. For the first half, Genesee Valley/Belfast struck while the iron was hot against Cuba-Rushford, as Matt Weaver netted a pair of goals within his hat trick-clinching evening.

Of the 10 total shots on goal for the offense, six of them in all found their way into the Rebels goal in Genesee Valley/Belfast’s 6-2 victory inside the Jungle on a rainy Wednesday night.

“It was a good bounce back game after Monday night,” said GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan. “A totally different team showed up tonight, and you get those games to happen once in a while where we show up, and then fall off another night. Cuba is quick and they’re big, and they challenged us. I’m down five starters, four of them linemen, so we had to overcome adversity and adjust to it. We’re getting better, and we have to keep our confidence up. They’re playing hard, and I like seeing that.”

Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-3) picked up a massive 4-1 lead over Cuba-Rushford to carry into the second half, headed by Matt Weaver’s pair of first half goals. Sean Mahon would collect an assist on Weaver’s second goal before adding in one of his own off a feed from Matt Cater.

Cater then dished off a helper to Justin Hill to finish the scoring off for the hosts in the first 40 minute session. In the midst of the action, Cuba-Rushford (3-4) would find a way to end the shutout against them with Logan Lewis’ goal off a Nate Cole feed.

In the second half, Weaver would finish off his hat trick with his second unassisted marker before Hill recorded his second goal of the game off a feed from Mahon. The Rebels would add their second goal in the last 40 minute frame from William Adams.

In the 10-6 outscoring by Genesee Valley/Belfast over Cuba-Rushford, Thai Norasethaporn picked up the win in goal with five saves. Jarrett Campbell would also make five stops in net for the Rebels, who return to action back home Friday night, hosting the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines in a 5 p.m. first kick.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will now take an extended time off to regroup, as they look to continue finding the win column when they return to action Tuesday night in Belfast with a 7 p.m. first kick against the Hinsdale Bobcats.

Houghton Academy 7, Andover/Whitesville 1

ANDOVER — On a rainy Wednesday night, it was one that the Panthers of Houghton Academy were looking to use as fuel to provide a rebound performance after their 5-0 shutout to the hands of Northstar back on Monday. Two days later, they gained an early upper hand in the first half against Andover/Whitesville.

In the second half, the explosion, as the Panthers ran rampant on the wet grass, knocking in their last five goals in the final 40 minute session to pull away permanently toward the finish line with a 7-1 rout over the road.

Amongst the goal-scorers for Houghton Academy (2-3), was Henry Sardina, who fueled a red-hot second half offense with four of the team’s seven total scores. Wes Davidson, Emie Lipscomb and Josh Davidson rounded off the scoring with a goal of their own to help further the cause for the visitors, who pulled away after taking a 2-0 lead over Andover/Whitesville (1-7) at the break.

For the hosts, Conner Phillips halted Houghton Academy’s potential shutout bid with his goal coming in the second half. In all, the visitors managed to outshoot Andover/Whitesville by a 22-8 count with Chris Habecker recording the win behind a five-save effort. On the other side, Luke Erdmann made 13 stops for the hosts.

Both teams are back in action Friday night with a pair of 5 p.m. contests, as Houghton Academy looks to continue finding the win column with a home contest against Friendship, while Andover/Whitesville heads over the road to take on red-hot Hinsdale, winners of five of their first six games.
