Tuesday Roundup: Scott, Viglietta assist Wellsville track in strong debut with dominant season-opening sweep over C-R; Fri/Scio softball tosses perfect game back home against C-S

WELLSVILLE — There was simply no better way to put an exclamation point on your season debut than a complete sweep across the board for the Wellsville track stars, as both the boys and girls squads put on a dominant display from start to finish, combining for nearly 30 wins as a cohesive unit to record wins of 87-44 and 103-25 over visiting Cuba-Rushford on a breezy, Tuesday Spring evening.

Powering their 87-44 win over the Rebels, the Wellsville boys team put up a remarkable performance with four different Lions recording at least a pair of first place finishes. Xavier Scott had the most out of the bunch, recording three in all — the 100 dash, 110 hurdles and from the field, in the high jump. Following up were Noah Joslyn, JT Mariotti and Ayden Faulkner, as the trio each strung together a pair of wins themselves to further the team’s cause.

Joslyn paved his way to victory with solid runs in the 800 and 1600, while Mariotti reached big heights in the pole vault before adding a 400 hurdles win to close out his night. Faulkner would round off the trio with triumphant finishes from the sand bunker, in the long and triple jump events.

Wellsville would also chip in with two relay victories, garnering them in the 1600 and 3200 relay events. Other individual winners for the Lions include: Kamron Dodge in the 3200 run and Grady Ball in the Shot Put.

On the girls side, the Lady Lions were outstanding from start to finish, combining to record 14 first place finishes behind multi-triumph performances from both Lauren Viglietta and Kaylee Oswald. Viglietta recorded three individual triumphs to lead the charge, two from the track, crossing the finish line first in the 200 and 400 dashes, along with a victory from the field in the long jump. Oswald followed with a complete sweep of both throwing events, garnering winning distances on the shot put and discus.

Along with the stand-out individual performances, the Lady Lions garnered a complete sweep of all three relay events, paving the path towards winning times in the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays. The team also collected more individual victories from Grace Kinnicutt in the 800 run, Marissa Weinhauer in the 100 hurdles, Talia O’Connor in the 400 hurdles, Brooklyn Dahlgren in the high jump, Alexa Hennessy in the triple jump and Addy Clark in the pole vault.

After longtime coach Chris Brown officially announced his retirement at the conclusion of last season, Jamie Bump has now stepped into the fold to continue guiding a young and promising Lady Lions team forward into a new era of Wellsville track. One that the program has not witnessed in over 30 years.

With career win No. 1 under her belt, Bump couldn’t be any more pleased.

“This team has a lot of potential, and after today, I am excited to see how this season unfolds,” she said. “The girls came out strong to give us a great first meet. Lauren Viglietta and Edahlia Sebastian were strong in the sprints for us, as well as our throwers, Kaylee Oswald, Alyssa Dorough and Grace Kinnicutt for taking 1-2-3 in both events. I am so proud of everyone.”

On the other side, the Lady Rebels were paced by a two-win performance from Libby Drum, taking both distance events in triumphant fashion with winning times in the 1500 and 3000 runs. Brynn Lavery chipped in with a 100 dash victory.

For the boys team, Anderson Siegel, Ethan Coleman and Tristan Clayson pitched in with the lone individual finishes, placing first in the 200 dash, 400 dash and discus events respectively. The team would also record a winning time in the 400 relay event. The Rebels will head for Invitational action in Franklinville, beginning on Saturday.

Wellsville will have one more meet before their annual Steeplechase meet this weekend, as they prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to Alfred-Almond on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Bolivar-Richburg 12, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1 (F-6)

BELFAST — After a week down south in Myrtle Beach, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were destined to put their foot down on the gas pedal to begin their title defense back home on Tuesday. With it, they started off hot against host Genesee Valley/Belfast, capitalizing on a flurry of opportunities from the offense to special teams to post an early lead they never looked back on, grabbing the 12-1 win after six innings in Belfast.

The Wolverines (1-2) never wasted time making their presence known right away from all fronts on the field, scoring a 6-0 lead through the first two innings of play, five of them from within a second inning that witnessed them use an even mixture of offense and baserunning to deliver the first haymaker.

The momentum continued to shift forward into the later innings when the team in black and red came across another five run frame, this time in the top of the sixth, where the bats ignited a flame that Genesee Valley/Belfast (0-2) could not put out, as Caden Allen and Evan Pinney both delivered big time hits — a lead-off double and two-run triple respectively, to jumpstart the offense in further distancing their advantage to keep their lead intact permanently.

“You can't have six errors in a game and not hit the ball against a team like Bolivar-Richburg, who is well-coached and a team that plays great defense. We didn't do that. They hit the ball, we didn't. That's the name of the game, and they took advantage early. It's still early, but we will find ways to correct it and improve.” said GV/Belfast coach Kevin Scott.

The two hits came off eight total that Bolivar-Richburg accounted for in the battle while the defense allowed Genesee Valley/Belfast to record just two of their own. Both Allen and Pinney had two hits each, combining to score five of the team’s 12 runs. On the mound, the win belonged to Trey Buchholz, who struck out four and walked four in his three-inning start.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast, Ryan Daciw fanned three and walked four across his two-inning tenure of action. At the plate, Matt Cater and Garrett Miller both recorded a hit, with Miller garnering a double. The team’s lone run would come in the bottom of the sixth, scoring off a passed ball to the back stop.

Both teams are back in action Thursday night with 5 p.m. first pitches, as Bolivar-Richburg heads home for the first time this season to welcome in Cuba-Rushford, while Genesee Valley/Belfast heads out on the road for a visit to defending Class D1 Champion Fillmore.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 15, Allegany-Limestone 0 (F-6)

WELLSVILLE — With a successful trip down south over the Spring break now officially in the books, it was time for the Lady Lions of Wellsville to get back to work back home at Tullar Field.

There were no signs of slowing down when Allegany-Limestone paid a visit on Tuesday, as the bats were unstoppable at the plate while three different pitchers combined for a one-hit, 15-0 shutout of the Lady Gators after six complete innings to earn the win.

“We definitely swung the bats well. Lindsay put a couple of nice swings on the ball. The pitching was equally effective across the board between Makenzie (Cowburn), Makenna (Dunbar) and Marissa (Ordway). It was really awesome to watch.” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.

Four different hitters for the Lady Lions (7-1) all accumulated at least two hits at the plate. But perhaps the biggest bat of the bunch belonged to Lindsay Stuck, who had an outstanding night by going 3-for-4 with a pair of three-run detonations — the first coming in the team’s three-run third, and immediately following, in their six-run fourth inning, ultimately helping distance their lead over the Lady Gators insurmountably.

In all, Wellsville recorded 15 runs off 13 total hits. Adding more fuel to the fire was Kaylie Fuller, who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a triple and double, driving in a run in the process. Makenna Dunbar went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Marissa Ordway belted a pair of doubles, scoring one. Emma Dunaway also pitched in with a double.

In the circle, Makenzie Cowburn along with Dunbar and Ordway, all combined to hold Allegany-Limestone to just one hit on offense, with Cowburn recording the victory with five strikeouts and one walk in her two-inning start. Dunbar and Ordway would combine for seven more strikeouts in the remaining four innings of relief.

The Lady Lions are now off until Friday night back on Tullar Field, hosting Gowanda in a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Cuba-Rushford 9, Fillmore 4

FILLMORE — After a back-and-forth engagement with the Franklinville Lady Panthers to start their season off on Monday, the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford would soon see another fight in their midst the very next day.

On Tuesday, the host Lady Eagles of Fillmore went stride for stride with the Lady Rebels all throughout the night. They would get within reach by a single run on two different occasions, but that would be as close as they would get. In the top of the seventh, the Lady Rebels would wind up breaking it open, scoring four massive runs to take a two-run lead and branch it out to six, keeping their lead intact to wrap up what was a huge 9-4 win back on the road.

After an early 1-0 lead was seized by the Lady Rebels (2-0) in the early going, both teams came together to provide an explosive third inning that saw five runs combined come across the plate, beginning with Cuba-Rushford once more, as they posted a big three-run frame before Fillmore answered right back by cutting the deficit in half in the following inning.

Each team would go on to add one more run across the middle innings before the Lady Rebels broke the door down in the top of the seventh with an enormous punch — a four-run stint of offense, which was helped out by Riley Keller all night long at the plate, as she went 4-for-4 with a double and four total RBI.

Fillmore would not go down without a fight, attempting to put late pressure on the Lady Rebels in their final at-bats. They managed to bring one final run across home, but the visitors in gray were able to shut the door before any more momentum from the hosts could be materialized.

In the circle, Sydney Howard garnered the victory for Cuba-Rushford, striking out eight and walking four in her five-inning start. Howard would also record the team’s remaining hit to follow up Keller’s incredible four-hit night.

On the other side, Fillmore (0-1) was paced by a strong debut for Mylee Miller on the rubber, striking out 11 and walking 11 across her six-inning start. At the plate, Skylar Gaddy went a perfect 3-for-3, including a double and drove in two runs. Oakley Frazier and Mattie McCumiskey each chipped in with two hits out of the team’s 11 in total. The Lady Eagles will look to rebound over the road tonight with a 5 p.m. visit to Geneseo.

Cuba-Rushford will take aim at three in a row on Thursday, when their road swing settles in once more, this time at Bolivar-Richburg for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Friendship/Scio 15, Campbell-Savona 0 (F-5)

FRIENDSHIP — The weather outdoors for much of the day on Tuesday was picture perfect, in time for Friendship/Scio’s arrival back home after a Spring Break away down south at Myrtle Beach. Another thing that was just as perfect, was the game that the reigning State Final Four finalists put on full display against visiting Campbell-Savona.

Nevaeh Ross was untouchable, never allowing a single runner from the Lady Panthers to reach base across the five innings of shortened action during their home opener in Friendship. As a result, the junior went on to hand out 13 chairs to keep the visitors in blue and red off the board from start to finish to power up a 13-0 shutout of perfection.

While Ross was taking care of business from within the circle, the Friendship/Scio (3-2) offense kicked into high gear in every way possible, with six different hitters all recording at least a pair of hits at the plate. With an early 2-0 lead over Campbell-Savona in hand, the floodgates burst wide open for the hosts, as Katherine Lamberson smacked a monster three-run jack in the bottom of the second — a seven-run frame in all, to help branch out the advantage to nine.

Friendship/Scio would go on to score a pair of three-run frames in the third and during their final at-bats in the fifth inning, to close out the victory.

Ross would also become the team’s leading hitter, garnering three hits in all. Following behind were Claire Calhoun, Morghyn Ross, Logan Roberts, Kiara Grover and Emily Lamberson, who all recorded a pair of hits each, with Calhoun tallying a triple and double, Ross recording a triple and Roberts, Grover and Lamberson all pitching in with a double.

Friendship/Scio will have a quick turnaround this evening over the hill, as they head for Scio to welcome in Andover/Whitesville for a 5 p.m. battle.

Bolivar-Richburg 17, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1 (F-5)

BELFAST — While a night of perfection unfolded in Friendship on Tuesday, the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg put together a strong debut to their 2023 campaign of their own over the road in Belfast. Under the guidance of Malayna Ayers in the circle, the Lady Wolverines put the pieces of the puzzle together to create a massive outburst against host Genesee Valley/Belfast, rolling away towards a 17-1 victory after five innings.

Ayers was responsible for dealing Bolivar-Richburg (1-0) their first win in no-hit fashion, despite giving up a run, as the senior ace recorded nine strikeouts to go with a single walk to pick up the triumphant decision. On the flip side, the bats came alive late after both squads were neck-and-neck through the first three innings.

With a narrow 2-1 lead over Genesee Valley/Belfast (0-1) in hand going into the back half, the visitors in black and red completely flipped the script by taking advantage of everything they would see at the plate, accounting for the next 15 runs in unanswered fashion. Among the enormous strand of scores, 10 of them would come in the fifth and final inning to ultimately force the 15-run rule against the hosts, securing the victory for good.

The Lady Wolverines accumulated 17 runs off 12 hits, with Jayna Thomas and Rylee Whiting each recording a pair of runs to pace the efforts. McKinlee and Madigan Harris both had a triple to pitch in. On the other side, Genesee Valley/Belfast saw Hannah Southwick-Powers go into the fourth inning in her start, as she struck out five and walked five. The team’s lone run came in the bottom of the third, posting it off an error committed by the Bolivar-Richburg defense.

Both teams are back on the field in a pair of 5 p.m. contests on Thursday, as Bolivar-Richburg heads back home to welcome in Cuba-Rushford, while Genesee Valley/Belfast hits the road for a visit to Fillmore.

Bolivar-Richburg 200 5(10) – 17 12 1

Genesee Valley/Belfast 001 0 0 – 1 0 2

BOYS TENNIS

Wellsville 5, Genesee Valley/Belfast 0

WELLSVILLE — Genesee Valley/Belfast gave Wellsville a run for their money across the tennis court on Tuesday, using some late stage resilience across the five matches to keep themselves well within reach. But the Lions were able to defy and foil the late threat by the visitors to put away a complete 5-0 sweep on their home court to grab their first win of the new campaign.

The Lions (1-1) brought out the brooms in all three singles matches, with Hua Qui Zhang leading the way by overcoming an early battle with Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Dominic Marra at first singles. After he was able to secure a 6-4 first set win, Zhang settled in and delivered a knockout blow with a 6-0 second set shutout to secure the straight-set victory.

Gavan Dickerson and Adam Iantorno helped finish off the match victory with straight-set wins of their own, with Dickerson laying claim to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Trevor Clark, while Iantorno cruised by James Frawley with a 6-1, 6-1 triumphant performance. In the doubles department, the first doubles team of Shane Davidson and Jayden Acker fought tooth and nail with the team of Luke Snyder and Spencer Rambarah, but ultimately came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Rounding off the wins was the final doubles collaboration of Joel Janssen and Jeremiah Pensyl, as they used a first-set blank to power up their straight-set win over Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (0-1) Liliana Porter and Gavin Kenyon. Genesee Valley/Belfast continues their road swing with a 5 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford on Thursday.

Wellsville will resume play this evening, this time on the road, as they pay a visit to the Addison Knights for a 5 p.m. first serve.
