Wednesday Roundup: Led by Bailey, Wellsville golfers shine in season debut on links, gallop past B-R; Nickerson slugs Fri/Scio baseball towards 4-3 walk-off win over And/Whi

WELLSVILLE — Spring has sprung at the Wellsville Country Club. There was no better weather to go out and play a round of golf on the links, than on Wednesday for the Lions season opener against the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg.

With both teams basking in the sunshine, the clear blue skies and perhaps a wind gust or few, the victory in action would ultimately belong to Wellsville, as their season kicked off on a positive note with a 213-264 victory led by a medalist round delivered by the strong play of Ethan Bailey.

Bailey was the match’s leading scorer, as the Lions (1-0) used his lowest round of 43 to set up shop for their triumphant season debut. Following behind him was Jackson Shoughrue, who recorded a round of 55. Noah Brogan chipped in with a 57, while Maddy Parks had a 58 to pitch in.

For the Wolverines (0-1), Ryder Easton led all golfers with a team-low round of 56. Parker Worth was not far behind, firing a round of 57. Maddox Day tallied a 63, while Connor Sisson had an 88. Bolivar-Richburg will return to the Wellsville Country Club next Wednesday, this time against host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 4 p.m. tee time.

On Friday, the Lions will hit the road themselves for the first time this season, as they head out to Indian Hills Golf Club in Addison to take on the host Knights at 4 p.m.

Fillmore 214, Cuba-Rushford 225

RUSHFORD — It was a tight battle across the board to open both Fillmore and Cuba-Rushford’s season on the links, Wednesday evening at Allegheny Hills. Both teams showcased an even balance up and down the scorecard, but in the end, a match-low round of 47 fired by Reid Cockle helped create just enough balance for the Eagles to take care of business with a narrow 214-225 win over the Rebels.

Following Cockle on the Fillmore (1-0) scorecard was Layton Sanasith, as he posted a round of 55. Anderson Wiltsey and Sam Cool each chipped in with rounds of 56 each, while Jack Cool rounded off with a score of 57 to finish off the Eagles victory.

Despite the defeat, Cuba-Rushford (0-1) saw Sebastian Saulter take lead at the top of the scorecard with a fantastic round, posting a team-low round of 51. Not far behind him was Haven Kellogg, as he posted a round of 52. Clifford Karn posted a 60, while Ethan Fries and Kaden Bell rounded off with scores of 62 and 63, respectively. The Rebels will head for the Ischua Valley Golf Club in Franklinville, where they will meet Hinsdale in a 4 p.m. tee-time on Tuesday.

Fillmore will mark their return to Allegheny Hills next Wednesday night with a 4 p.m. match slated against the Lions of Wellsville.

BOYS TENNIS

Addison 4, Wellsville 1

ADDISON — The Knights of Addison were at the top of their game on Wednesday, as they warded off tough competition from the Lions of Wellsville every step of the way, recording four victories out of the five matches on the tennis court to set up what was a 4-1 home victory.

The win for Addison was highlighted by a complete sweep of all three singles matches, but Wellsville (1-2) would not allow them to take the wins without a fight, as Hua Qui Zhang overcame a first set shutout in his first singles match to apply some late pressure. In the doubles department, the first doubles team of Shane Davidson and Jayden Acker gave it all they had, forcing an extended session in the second set but ultimately falling in a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Wellsville would find a way to record their first and only win of the match from Joel Janssen and Jeremiah Pensyl at second doubles, as the duo overcame a first set defeat to provide a solid response in the last two sets to come away victorious with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.

BASEBALL

Friendship/Scio 4, Andover/Whitesville 3

SCIO — In an all-out defensive battle between Andover/Whitesville and Friendship/Scio, runs were going to come at a premium. Every time one team would find their way onto the board, the other countered with a response of their own immediately after.

With time running out to try and create separation, both squads were put to the test in the seventh and final inning. With Friendship/Scio holding a narrow one-run lead going in, it would soon be erased after a massive play by the visitors in blue and purple allowed them to tie the game at three.

All of a sudden, a walk-off would be the only way for the hosts to provide the final response. With the winning run standing on second, Friendship/Scio continued the game-long trend one last time.

They have Tyler Nickerson to thank for that.

At the swing of the bat, Nickerson delivered with a big punch for Friendship/Scio, as he poked a base hit straight into the outfield. A shot that ultimately garnered enough distance to allow Hunter Hill to come home for the go-ahead, game-winning score, emptying the dugout in the process to celebrate their first victory of the season on Wednesday in Scio by a 4-3 count.

Through the opening frame, Friendship/Scio (1-1) doubled up with a 2-1 lead over Andover/Whitesville to control. Both teams would exchange a pair of scoreless innings, including perhaps the best chance for the hosts to strike, providing a bases loaded opportunity. But a hit towards third base against the Andover/Whitesville defense saw all the runners being left on base.

The big exit off the field allowed Andover/Whitesville (0-1) to cash in on a momentum burst in their next at-bats. As a result, Landon Cook belted a big RBI straight through short and into left field with a runner on second. That run would score on the play to tie the game at two.

But like the first inning, Friendship/Scio answered back with a response of their own right after the game found its deadlock, as Ethan Davenport unlocked it with a crucial two-out single straight up the middle and into center field to take the 3-2 lead away from Andover/Whitesville.

The lead for the hosts in gold would remain after two more scoreless innings were traded between both foes, leading up to the epic conclusion in the seventh. Andover/Whitesville worked their way back from behind one final time to tie the game at three before the future of the battle laid solely on the shoulders of Friendship/Scio, who aimed to provide a game-winning spark.

After Hunter Hill reached base in scoring position, the game now hindered on what was Tyler Nickerson’s final at-bat. He made sure that the chance to win the game didn’t go unnoticed, as he smacked his game-winning drive into the outfield far enough to bring Hill home as the game-ending run to pull Friendship/Scio ahead with the game’s final move, en route towards their first win.

While the offenses were focused on getting their gears turning, the defense saw a pitching duel between Andover/Whitesville’s Layton Miller and Friendship/Scio’s Ethan Davenport come into full fruition, each keeping their respective opposition off-balanced from start to finish. Miller struck out nine and walked four for the visitors, while Davenport handed out 13 chairs and walked just two in his start that lasted into the seventh inning.

On the attack, Friendship/Scio outhit Andover/Whitesville by a 7-2 count, with Nick Sortore leading the way with a perfect 3-for-3 outing. Davenport added in two hits himself, driving in a pair while Hill recorded a double and scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning. On the other side for the visitors, CJ Estep had one of the team’s two lone hits.

Up next, Friendship/Scio will look to ride the momentum wave into Cuba-Rushford for a meeting with the Rebels at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, while Andover/Whitesville aims to rebound quickly back on the road tonight, visiting Hinsdale in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Fillmore 17, Cuba-Rushford 5

FILLMORE — Right in the midst of their first term at the plate, the Eagles of Fillmore were absolutely relentless. On Wednesday, the Class D1 Champions kicked off their title defense with an opening frame that allowed them to set the tone immediately against visiting Cuba-Rushford, scoring a double-digit lead they never looked back from to complete a 17-5 win over the Rebels after five innings.

The Eagles (1-0) struck gold in the first inning with their opening at-bats against Cuba-Rushford, putting the gas pedal down on a 10-run frame. Their advantage was well-maintained all throughout the battle, despite a four-run second inning for each side immediately following, as they wrapped up with the game’s last three runs in the bottom of the fourth to force the 10-run rule into play.

Four different hitters for the hosts in green accumulated at least two hits at the plate, including Aiden Wagner, Luke Colombo and Damon Potter, as they all recorded a pair including a double. Nolan Krzeminski also had two hits, and scored three runs. On the mound, Colombo and Brent Zubikowski combined to hold Cuba-Rushford (1-1) to four hits, with Colombo grabbing the win with four strikeouts and three walks.

Zubikowski chimed in with four strikeouts and a walk of his own during his relief appearance.

The Rebels were paced by Jacob Smith’s tenure of relief, as he fanned three and walked one. At the plate, he was one of four different hitters to record a hit, joining Allen Fuller, Preston Bilotta and Dean Frank to ignite the offense.

Both teams will have quick turnarounds tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with Fillmore standing pat at home to welcome in Genesee Valley/Belfast, while Cuba-Rushford hits the road once again to visit Bolivar-Richburg.

SOFTBALL

Friendship/Scio 10, Andover/Whitesville 0

SCIO — For the second straight night, Friendship/Scio conducted a night of perfection on the field, this time against visiting Andover/Whitesville on Wednesday, where Nevaeh Ross dominated the circle from start to finish to help power the offense towards another stellar victory by way of a 10-0 shutout.

Ross was nearly untouchable completely from the first to last pitch being hurled to plate, never allowing a single Andover/Whitesville baserunner to reach after she finished with 20 strikeouts out of 21 total batters being faced across the seven-inning stretch.

While the momentum was being built on defense, the Friendship/Scio (4-2) offense started to load coal into the fire with a five-run bottom of the first inning, ignited by a lead-off triple to the outfield by Ross. The phenom was one of four different hitters to record at least a pair of hits at the plate, as the team recorded 11 in total for the game.

After the brilliant start they captured, Friendship/Scio continued to add onto their lead with pieces of insurance beginning in the third inning until the end, with their last run in the bottom of the sixth inning coming on a lead-off inside-the-park home run by Morghyn Ross. Morghyn would finish with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate with two total RBI and two runs scored.

Adding help at the plate for the defending Class D2 Champions was Kadence Donohue and Emily Lamberson, each recording a pair of hits, with Lamberson posting a double and scoring a run.

Andover/Whitesville saw Makaila Brewster record five strikeouts and walk three during her complete game appearance in the circle.

Both teams will have Cuba-Rushford up next on their schedule, with Friendship/Scio getting first crack at 11 a.m. Saturday morning. Andover/Whitesville will then follow after the weekend, heading to visit the Lady Rebels on Monday at 5 p.m.

Fillmore 26, Geneseo 13

GENESEO — Things were fast and furious up north in Geneseo on Wednesday. Between both Fillmore and the host Lady Blue Devils, the two foes and their respective offenses caught flames of high intensity by combining for nearly 40 runs off 34 total hits at the plate. At the end of it all, the Lady Eagles did just enough during their final at-bats to pull away towards their first win by a 26-13 count in a slugfest.

The electricity made its presence known in the first three innings of play for the Lady Eagles (1-1) who, despite all the pressure from Geneseo, built a lead that they never lost, beginning with a 9-3 advantage. Each team would exchange a five-run sixth inning, which would allow Fillmore to maintain their lead in the same swing going into the last inning.

Up by a 15-11 count, Fillmore had one final card to play against Geneseo — an 11-run outburst in their final at-bats, ultimately branching their lead insurmountably to secure their first win of the season.

The Lady Eagles saw three pitchers take on the circle, with Mercedes Wolcott grabbing the start and earning the win in her first career Varsity start, striking out two and walking two. At the plate, four different hitters recorded at least three hits, three of them with four all together. Leading the charge was Preslee Miller, who went 4-for-5 with a deep detonation to center field for her first homer of the season.

Adding help along the way was Mylee Miller and Kylee Ellsworth, who also had four hits each. Emma Beardsley rounded off with three hits of her own.

Fillmore is back home for their third straight game in their four consecutive game stretch, hosting Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 5 p.m. first pitch.
