Wednesday Roundup: Wellsville golfers lock horns with C-G, but visiting Chargers hang on to capture big road win at WCC; GV/Belfast pushes towards 4-0 start, Fillmore softball coasts past Ark-Can

WELLSVILLE — Wednesday evening served as the origin of a busy week ahead for the Wellsville Lions golfers, beginning with the first of three matches in three consecutive days at the Wellsville Country Club. With nothing but sunshine and temperatures just eclipsing past 70 degrees at one point during the afternoon, there simply was no better time to settle the score on the links.

Looking to bounce back following a season-opening defeat to the hands of red hot Genesee Valley/Belfast right before the Spring recess, the Lions gave Canisteo-Greenwood everything they could handle. Three of the top four golfers for the Chargers all fired rounds within the 40s on the scorecard, and because of it, the visitors were able to come away victorious with an enormous 185-196 win over Wellsville behind Brody Schaumberg and his match-leading medalist round.

Schaumberg led all Canisteo-Greenwood golfers with his exceptional round of golf, as he flipped the switch on a match-low round of 41 on the scorecard. Right behind him was Thomas Sirianni and his round of 44. Kevin Sirianni had a round of 47, while Dan Stilson rounded off with a 53.

Wellsville (0-2) was led by both Fletcher Kaye and Jackson Shoughrue, as the two Lions came together to share the top honors of the scorecard with team-low rounds of 46. Noah Brogan recorded a 51, and Rowen Ader helped round off with his round of 53.

The Lions will revisit the Wellsville Country Club today to take on Genesee Valley/Belfast once again in a 4 p.m. tee-time.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 187, Cuba-Rushford 203

RUSHFORD — The Genesee Valley/Belfast golfers have become one tough customer on the links to start the Spring. On Wednesday, immediately following their monumental triumph over the Eagles of Fillmore, they turned right around and found the win column once again, as they docked their fourth consecutive victory at Allegany Hills in Rushford with a 187-203 win over host Cuba-Rushford.

Grant Preston has been on a roll for Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-0) since the start of the campaign outdoors, and he showed no signs of slowing down one bit, as he came away with his fourth straight medalist round for the team behind his carded round of 42. Behind him was Will Guilford and his round of 44. Afton Hamer was not far behind, carding a 49. Rounding off the scoring was Jackson Barney, who had a round of 52 to add into the mix.

Cuba-Rushford (0-3) was captained by another team-leading round from Zach Deck, as he fired a low round of 44. Coen Kellogg and Xavier Saulter each had a 52, while Ethan Fries had a 55.

Both teams are back to the links today in a pair of 4 p.m. tee times, with Genesee Valley/Belfast “hosting” Wellsville at the Wellsville Country Club, while Cuba-Rushford stays put to host Fillmore.

Fillmore 198, Bolivar-Richburg 286

BOLIVAR — Three different golfers all clashed at the top of the overall scorecard for medalist honors, for the Eagles of Fillmore. When the final numbers were added up, it was Aiden Freeman that emerged with the day’s highest honor on Wednesday, as he aided in the team’s victorious propelling over host Bolivar-Richburg at the Bolivar Golf Club with a 198-286 team victory.

Freeman battled right alongside his teammates, Sam Cool and Anderson Wiltsey for the top spot on the Fillmore (1-1) scorecard from start to finish, as he helped guide the Eagles toward their first win of 2025 with his match-low round of 48. Cool and Wiltsey finished right behind him, each scoring a round of 49. Jameson Rhett rounded off the scoring with his round of 52.

Bolivar-Richburg (0-2) was paced by a team-low round of 57 shot by Owen Unfus. Addison Hackett chipped in with a round of 74. Willow Worth had a 77, while Jordan Boldt had a 78. The Wolverines are back on the golf course Friday in Wellsville, as they meet the host Lions at the Wellsville Country Club at 4 p.m.

The Eagles will look to keep their winning ways rolling back home to Allegany Hills in Rushford, but will serve as the visiting team in this particular instance, as they take on the host Rebels of Cuba-Rushford today at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Fillmore 11, Arkport-Canaseraga 4

FILLMORE — 24 hours removed after prevailing in a late offensive slugfest against Cuba-Rushford, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore looked to keep the ball rolling back home with a big Wednesday night showdown against Arkport-Canaseraga gracing the County’s softball spotlight.

The hosts in black and green tagged right alongside the Lady Wolves in another offensive marathon across the first three innings of play, claiming the advantage before the visitors countered with a big third inning response to create level playing ground once again. But the surface was disturbed a short time later by a game-changing avalanche from the Lady Eagles, as they went on to score seven straight runs to break a 4-4 tie in permanent fashion, rolling out of reach of Arkport-Canaseraga with an 11-4 victory.

“Arkport-Canaseraga made contact all game and tonight, we played sound defense and made the plays we are expected to make,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “Kelsie Songster had a great game at the plate, while the top of our line-up continues to be effective. Mylee (Miller) is doing a solid job on the mound and growing every game. She is gaining strength and stamina to prepare for the second half of the season.  As our depth improves and we play sound defense, we can expect to have a chance to win each night out.”

Fillmore, now winners of five of their first six games, got on the board with a go-ahead response in the bottom of the first after Arkport-Canaseraga originally broke the ice on a Grace Mahany single, as they utilized a big bat courtesy of Summer Friedl, who drove in two on her blast into right field.

The Lady Eagles continued the momentum into the second inning where Morghyn Ross and Mattie McCumiskey went back-to-back at the top of the lineup with runners in scoring position, as the two bats each drove in a run on a triple and single respectively to bolster their advantage to three.

All of those runs were made up in the top of the third inning by the Lady Wolves, with two of the team’s three runs in the frame scratching across on a single to right field. But the newly-paved playing surface was interrupted by the hosts going forward, as they went on to score seven straight runs — four of them stemming from within a bottom of the fourth inning that was led by Mylee Miller and Kelsie Songster’s big RBI singles.

The 11 total runs for Fillmore were anchored by 11 strong hits at the dish, with Songster’s 3-for-4 outing leading the way. Miller, Ross and McCumiskey each had two hits, with Ross and Miller driving in two total RBI.

In the circle, the win belonged to Miller, who went all seven innings to strike out five and walk four.

For Arkport-Canaseraga, Grace Mahany led the bats with three of the team’s eight in all, including a double and RBI. On the mound, Mahany went the first five innings with four strikeouts and five walks.

Fillmore has a quick turnaround right back on the field tonight, heading down the road to visit Genesee Valley/Belfast at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast at 5 p.m.

CUBA — A 4-0 start was in the crystal ball for the Eagles of Fillmore on the tennis court Wednesday night, as they took control of the action right from the start at Cuba-Rushford with four strong wins in competition to pair with a second doubles forfeit, rolling straight towards a 5-0 sweep against the host Rebels on Wednesday.

The Eagles (4-0) saw Isaiah Sisson, Ezra Schilke and Brayden Walton take command of all three singles matches on the court, with Schilke’s dominant 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Cuba-Rushford’s Jadyn Little leading the way. Sisson took down Carter Brown at first singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory of his own, while Walton rounded off the wins with a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Paula Freitas at third singles.

The last win for Fillmore came from the first doubles team of Carson and Kallan Sanasith, as the two siblings converged to deliver a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Rebels duo of James Adams and Cara Barry. The second doubles squadron of Levi Russell and Owen Chapman were credited with the fifth and final team victory via forfeit.

Up next for the Eagles is a trip back home to Houghton University, where they will welcome in Andover/Whitesville for battle at 5 p.m. on Friday.
