Thursday Roundup: School records shatter in Wellsville track home opener, as Howard, Scott lead field in team’s quad-meet sweep; Lions baseball blanks Olean, C-R baseball, softball win in 8 vs. B-R

WELLSVILLE — Right as you make the right hand turn down Williams Avenue going east on the Wellsville Arterial, you can see a line of parked cars elongated from the tippy-top of the track all the way down into the parking lots on the lower level, and then back out the main entrance of the athletic complex. All, for the Wellsville track team’s first home meet of the campaign, as they welcomed Canisteo-Greenwood, Alfred-Almond, Genesee Valley/Belfast and Jasper-Troupsburg into town for battle on Thursday.

Not only was it their first in front of their home crowd, but it was a meet that saw quite a bit of history being made along the way. In all, three school records for the Lions were all broken by two performers, both of which provided some of the most clamorous noise for the team last Spring by charting their course all the way to the State Meet in New York City.

On a Spring-esque evening with the sun beaming down from the sky, it was shining the brightest on both JJ Howard and Xavier Scott, as the two Lions rewrote the school’s track ledger with brand new records, with Howard smashing school records in both the high jump and the triple jump, while Scott carved his path back to States with an automatic qualification after he broke the 110 hurdles record, as the two competitors helped set the tone for the Wellsville boys and their complete sweep with victories against Canisteo-Greenwood (129-97), Alfred-Almond (173-37), Jasper-Troupsburg (171-40) and Genesee Valley/Belfast (156-68).

Right after setting his first new school record with a 44-8.5 distance from the sand pit in the triple jump, Howard was the last competitor standing in the high jump event, as he continued his chase towards more history, as he soared to a height of 6-6 in the high jump to set a brand new standard. In addition to his two record-breaking performances, Howard also recorded a long jump victory (21-4.5) to complete the jumping sweep.

Scott’s lone victory that saw him work his way back into the school’s history books was one of epic caliber, as he galloped his high horse all the way to the finish line with a brand new time that will stand as one of, if not, the quickest time in the State for the 110 hurdles event, finishing with a time of 14.6. The four combined victories from both seniors were part of a seven first-place finish display for the Lions, with Collin Perkins (1600 run) and Jack Davis (400 hurdles) adding the remaining individual triumphs to go with a winning 1600 relay event.

As for the Lady Lions, they followed suit with a clean sweep of their own, as they recorded six first place finishes to go with a plethora of secondary finishes to power up their three team wins over Canisteo-Greenwood (197-31), Alfred-Almond (173-66) and Genesee Valley/Belfast (150.5-96.5). Leading the way was Kaylee Oswald from the throwing pit, as she continued to lead the field in both the shot put and discus events with her winning distances. Along with two relay victories coming at the 400 and 3200 relays respectively, Talia O’Connor (400 hurdles), Brooklyn Dahlgren (high jump) and Kylie Phelps (triple jump) each rounded off the wins with one of their own.

The Genesee Valley/Belfast boys and girls put together a strong performance with two victories of their own, with the boys defeating Alfred-Almond (117-62) and Jasper-Troupsburg (115-47) behind three first place finishes — two from Brayden Cooper on the track, as he rode his high horse all the way to the finish line with winning times in both the 100 and 200 dashes. Noah Miller chipped in with a win in the 3200 run along the way. On the other side, a four-victory meet for Bayleigh Tallman set the stage for the ladies to capture wins over Alfred-Almond (125-87) and Canisteo-Greenwood (144-33).

Tallman garnered three of her four wins on the track, speeding towards glory with a win in the 100 and 200 dashes, and the 400 sprint. Her fourth came from the field where she picked up the winning distance in the sand pit, in the long jump. Sophie Zillgitt scored a first place height right alongside Wellsville’s Brooklyn Dahlgren, as she shared the top spot with a height of 4-9 to claim gold. Genesee Valley/Belfast also recorded a victory from within the relay department, triumphing in the 1600 relay.

Both Allegany County squads will return to regular season action at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, with Wellsville playing host to both Cuba-Rushford and Fillmore, while Genesee Valley/Belfast joins Friendship/Scio in a trip to Bolivar-Richburg.

BASEBALL

Wellsville 5, Olean 0

OLEAN — Eclipsing over the horizon was a trip to Cooperstown for the weekend, for the Lions of Wellsville. In order to get there, they needed to clear just one more hurdle: The Huskies of Olean. The last time the two teams faced off against one another, time was of the essence in a game that was shortened due to darkness, as Brennen Geffers blasted a sixth inning grand slam to aid the Lions in pulling away.

This time around, a different story. The Lions took the reins early, and they never slowed down.

On Thursday, Wellsville mustered a massive head full of steam going into this weekend’s colossal showdown with Bolivar-Richburg in the birthplace of baseball, as they struck gold early in their opening at-bats while Trent Green captained a complete game, three-hit gem on the hill to keep the host Huskies absolutely silent at the dish to put a victorious ribbon on what was a 5-0 blank over the road.

“It’s nice to score first and jump on them so we can get the momentum our way. We sent seven batters to the plate in the first and we hit the ball real well,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “It was definitely the offensive output that gave us a big jump-start that we needed. It was a tremendous start for Trenton to go with it. We’re looking forward to other pitchers behind him to eat some innings as well. Trent was very efficient, and we fielded our positions real well behind him. He did well, six strikeouts in seven innings, we didn’t have to use anyone else on this night.”

The Lions (6-2) wasted no time establishing their presence against the Huskies, as the top of the order provided some ice-breaking fireworks out of the gate. After a lead-off double to right center field by Aiden Cowburn set up shop, it was the big bat of Ty Vogel that provided a full-blown detonation to deep right center field, sending his ball straight over the fence to grant the team a 2-0 lead.

The advantage for Wellsville held firm all the way across the board, as they scored one more run in the fourth before slamming the door shut in the sixth with their final two runs, laying the rest of the game on Green’s shoulders going forward. When it was all said and done, Green completed a three-hit twirl, striking out six and walking four.

At the plate, Matt Ritter went 2-for-4 with a double, and an RBI. Aiden Cowburn scored three runs, while Green, Karson Grover, Andrew Ordiway and Tyler Rahr all posted a hit each, with the latter of the Lions stepping onto the scene with his first career Varsity hit.

The Wellsville baseball team will leave town this afternoon and head for Cooperstown to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play at historic Doubleday Field, if the weather cooperates on Saturday, as they prepare to take on the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines. First pitch of the contest is tentatively scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.

WLSV – Trent Green (WP) (CG, 6K, 4BB) and Matt Ritter.

OLE – Landon Johnson (LP) (2K, 4BB), Dominik Myers (6) (3K, 3BB) and Caine Degolier.

Cuba-Rushford 10, Bolivar-Richburg 9 (F-8)

CUBA — There was absolutely no trouble finding ways to bring the runs across the plate between Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford on Thursday. Right from the first pitch, the two longtime rivals buckled in and went straight to work. After an even first inning was registered into the ledger, it was a back-and-forth trade all the way to the bitter end, with a game-tying run in the seventh from the Wolverines ultimately forcing extra innings.

With Hayden Schappacher holding Bolivar-Richburg at bay with a clean eighth inning of work, it was now the Rebels turn to complete the bounce back. As a result, they only needed three at-bats to get the job done, with Kadin Pierce leading off with a big hit before working his way into scoring position before eighth grader Carson Schunk belted home the game-winning hit to bring him in, as he finished off Cuba-Rushford’s walk-off victory in style to complete their rebound with a 10-9 win over the Wolverines.

“Bolivar-Richburg is young and they came ready to play. We spotted them three and were flat-footed to start the game, but we really bounced back with three of our own in the bottom half. Credit to both teams fighting until the end,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “We were lucky to get one more hit to fall. Eli (Sleggs) didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but he battled, and that allowed Hayden to come in after a shaky first inning to settle right in with a big seventh inning to help us tie the game after, and then gave us another big outing in the eighth to set up what we were able to do. I was very happy to be back in the win column after a tough game Tuesday.”

Both teams registered a three-run frame across the first inning to get the scoring started on the diamond, with the Rebels (2-2) responding largely off with a two-run double off the bat of Adam Shaffer before he was brought in moments later on a Lucas Haskins single to tie the game. From the second inning onward, the pendulum shifted in every single direction, with Cuba-Rushford continuing to ride the momentum with three straight runs to claim a 6-4 lead after three complete frames of play.

The Wolverines (4-2) came right back with two runs of their own — one of them off an RBI double from Braden Zilker before he scored on a passed ball. The back-and-forth barbs continued all the way into the seventh inning where the visitors found a way to tie the game on error, as Landon Barkley navigated his way across the plate after originally leading off with a deep triple to right field.

With both teams drawing even on the scoreboard to force extra innings, it was now on the shoulders of the pitchers to keep one another at bay. For the hosts in blue and gray, Hayden Schappacher did just that, handing out three straight strikeouts in the top of the eighth with runners at second and third to leave them both on base, tilting the momentum to their final at-bats of the game, where they finished off the victory in walk-off fashion behind Schunk’s single to right field.

The Rebels finished with 10 runs off 12 hits, with Finn Ricketts going 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning to grant a 5-4 lead at that particular juncture of time. Kadin Pierce recorded three hits, while Lucas Haskins and Stanley Gilchrist each had two hits. On the mound, the win belonged to Schappacher after a brilliant finish down the stretch, as he compiled five strikeouts and three walks.

For the Wolverines, Tavyn MacDonell had the big bat, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Landon Barkley, Braden Zilker and Mason Baldwin all had two hits to chip in for an offense that produced 11 hits in total. On the mound, Maddox Davison struck out four and walked three in his relief appearance. Bolivar-Richburg will now get set for a long road trip upstate, as they travel to historic Doubleday Field in Cooperstown to face the Wellsville Lions on Saturday, weather permitting, in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Cuba-Rushford will look to eclipse the .500 mark for the young campaign coming up on Monday, as they have their turn to face Wellsville on the road at 5 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg 310 202 10 – 9 11 2

Cuba-Rushford 321 120 01 – 10 12 2

B-R – Mason Baldwin (2K, 5BB), Maddox Davison (LP, 3) (4K, 3BB) and Tavyn MacDonell.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 13, Fillmore 3 (F-6)

BELFAST — It was a defeat back on Tuesday against Bolivar-Richburg that Genesee Valley/Belfast wanted to leave in the rearview mirror quickly. For the Eagles of Fillmore, it was a comeback victory on the same day at Cuba-Rushford they wanted to build on. When the two teams clashed for their first of two epic showdowns on the diamond, something had to give Thursday night.

The answer came right from the beginning of the game off of Ethan Davenport’s massive first inning double, which set the tone for the rest of the night spent under the lights at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast, as Genesee Valley/Belfast siphoned and reversed the momentum in their favor to force an early end to the night against the Eagles, rolling towards a 13-3 bounce back victory in six innings.

“It was a great win after a disappointing loss at Bolivar-Richburg on Tuesday,” said GV/Belfast coach Dennis Miles. “Fillmore has a very good team, so we were pleased to get out of there with a commanding win to get back on track. The (Damon) Potter kid has been one of the best pitchers around, and we were able to get a hold of him early. Davenport’s double really set the tone for the rest of the game, unlike the game on Tuesday where we couldn’t get a hold of it at all. Ryan (Daciw) pitched a nice game for us across five innings and then Mason (Thomas) came in and did what he was supposed to do in relief. That can be huge for us if he starts to develop into a closer role for us.”

Daciw was simply outstanding on the mound for Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-1), as he led the defense on the field through five superb innings of work, striking out six all while surrendering just five hits. As for the bats, Ethan Davenport was a gigantic presence early, as he delivered the goods with a big double to help break the game open. The junior finished with three total RBI and three runs scored to go with the knock.

Leading the bats for the hosts was Derek Calanni, who went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. In addition, Ian McKenzie had two hits, driving in three in the process, while Daciw, Ben Cater, Nolan Hunter and Trent Hutchison all had a hit.

Fillmore (3-2) was paced by the bat of Isaac Wilcox, who had two of the team’s five hits. James Hillman, Damon Potter and Brayden Hennard all had a hit each to help further the team’s cause. On the mound, Potter went the first three innings, striking out four and walking two. The Eagles will look to bring it back into the win column back home tonight at the Town Park, as they welcome in Canisteo-Greenwood at 5 p.m.

A complete box score was not made available to report upon publication.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will stay put at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast to welcome in Franklinville one more time on Saturday, with first pitch slated for a 7 p.m. commencement.

Andover/Whitesville 15, Friendship/Scio 2 (F-5)

ANDOVER — The attack came alive for Andover/Whitesville on Thursday on their home field in Andover, ripping and roaring their way across the plate for 15 big runs — the majority of which stemmed in the first three innings of play to set the tone against visiting Friendship/Scio, as they rolled straight towards a 15-2 victory after five complete innings.

Andover/Whitesville (2-1) made the most of the opportunity on the offensive front, using a combination of hits, along with some timely baserunning to provide one crack into the ice after another. It would begin with the game’s first two runs in the bottom of the first before the whirlwind set in across the next two innings, scoring 11 runs in that span to keep Friendship/Scio in the rearview mirror.

Out of their 15 total runs, Andover/Whitesville came up with eight hits in all. On the mound, the win belonged to a solid two-inning start from Gavin Frungillo, as he struck out four.

Friendship/Scio (0-5) had just two runs off four hits at the dish, eliminating the potential shutout bid being put on by the hosts in the top of the third inning with their first run. On the mound, Cooper Greenman went all four innings, striking out five and walking nine. Friendship/Scio will hit the road Monday night for a 5 p.m. visit to Jasper-Troupsburg.

Further statistics were not made available to report upon publication.

Andover/Whitesville will return to action tonight right back in Andover, as they welcome in the Avoca-Prattsburgh Titans for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Friendship/Scio 001 01 – 2 4 2

Andover/Whitesville 256 2X – 15 8 1

F/S – Cooper Greenman (LP) (CG, 5K, 9BB) and Charlie Taylor.

A/W – Gavin Frungillo (WP) (4K), Vinny Joyce (3) (K, BB), Rogan Perkins (5) (2K, BB) and Colton Calladine.

Alfred-Almond 19, Hinsdale 4 (F-5)

HINSDALE — In a game that was originally slated for battle earlier this month, the Alfred-Almond Eagles saw their offense go full bore over the road on Thursday right from the get-go, as they put an early end to their visit to Hinsdale with a massive five-inning victory over the host Bobcats by a 19-4 count.

Stats and a complete box score were not made available to report upon publication.

Hinsdale (1-5) will return to the diamond Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. visit from Mount Morris.

SOFTBALL

Cuba-Rushford 4, Bolivar-Richburg 3 (F-8)

CUBA — Not only did the baseball game go the extra mile at Cuba-Rushford on Thursday, but across the way at the softball field, Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford needed more time to settle the score once and for all, after a late and magnificent comeback was staged by the host Lady Rebels.

After a first inning advantage by the Lady Wolverines was foiled by the hosts in gray and blue immediately down the stretch, the race to the finish line was on between both teams to try and close out the action. With both teams proceeding to trade back-and-forth barbs in the last two innings of play, the last of the bunch was the most damaging.

That belonged to Cuba-Rushford, who needed only the first three at-bats to put an end to the game in walk-off fashion. With Aubrey Williams and Emma Bunk both reaching base, they were brought across in a big way, with the latter of the runs stemming off an error by the Bolivar-Richburg infield during Claire Moyer’s at-bat to help walk it off for the Lady Rebels, as they squeezed ever so tightly past the Lady Wolverines to get back on track with a 4-3 eight-inning victory.

It was a 1-0 lead for the Lady Wolverines that was held straight from the start, utilizing some key base-running to unlock the door for the driver’s seat. With the key now in the ignition, the two foes went on to trade four straight scoreless innings leading up to a bottom of the sixth inning that saw the momentum tilt in Cuba-Rushford’s (2-4) favor, using special teams of their own to drag two runs across to double their lead.

Immediately after the go-ahead spurt, Bolivar-Richburg (3-3) reapplied the deadlock in the top of the seventh inning with little room for error, as Danika Loucks blasted a base hit to score Sydney Faulkner and tie the game at two, ultimately forcing extras along the way.

The momentum stayed with the Lady Wolverines going into the eighth inning behind the guidance of Cassidy Stives, who drove in a run off her single into the outfield to propel the team ahead with a 3-2 advantage. But in the bottom half, the Lady Rebels were not far behind with a response of their own, doubling up the Lady Wolverines once again with a game-winning special teams sequence that saw Moyer drive in the team’s lone run on error.

The Lady Rebels assembled four runs off three hits at the plate, with Kate Radomski, Arlah Shaffer and Emma Bunk all posting a hit each. On the mound, Lizzy Cocsis had two strikeouts and a walk during her complete game win.

For the Lady Wolverines, Kylee Whiting was absolutely superb in the circle, as she handed out 13 chairs to Cuba-Rushford and had just two walks. At the plate, the team garnered only four hits, with Stives leading the pack with two of them. Whiting had the team’s fourth and final hit alongside Loucks’ strike in the sixth inning.

Both teams are back to action Saturday afternoon, with the Lady Wolverines traveling up to Waterloo for their annual Strike-Out Cancer Tournament, while Cuba-Rushford remains local, hitting the road for a 1 p.m. visit to Canisteo-Greenwood.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 6, Fillmore 3

BELFAST — For much of the evening at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast, Fillmore’s Mylee Miller and Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Hannah Powers locked horns from within the circle. The two hurlers were outstanding from start to finish in their complete game tenures on Thursday, as they combined to hand out 21 strikeouts to try and keep their respective oppositions quiet at the plate.

Although the pitchers were at the top of their game, an early start from the Lady Eagles served as the difference across a good portion of battle heading down the stretch. But later on however, the balance of power shifted hands, and now it was occupied by the hosts. Entering the fourth inning, Genesee Valley/Belfast turned up the heat, changing the complexion of the game in one foul swoop with a ravenous outing of attack that gave them the lead for good, as they sidled past Fillmore with a 6-3 victory.

Before Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-2) put the gas pedal straight down to the floor, they had to overcome a very rapid response out of the gate from the Lady Eagles in the opening frame, as they took control of a 2-0 lead early on off a massive RBI triple from Mattie McCumiskey to score Tenlee Miller and, an at-bat later, an RBI double from Mylee Miller to provide the second game-opening crack in the ice.

The two foes would trade back-and-forth close frames that kept the offenses frozen at the plate, leading up to the bottom of the fourth where it all broke loose. For Genesee Valley/Belfast, it was a big-time rally, as they loaded the bases on their first three at-bats, with Jenna Hill, Addison Bradt and Keanna Sands all posting singles. A short time later, a walk and hit-by-pitch to the next two hitters in the frame allowed two of the team’s five runs to come in.

Fillmore (5-2) would attempt one final rally in the top of the seventh, posting a single run before the curtain ultimately fell down, as Genesee Valley/Belfast hung on for dear life to secure the win.

The home team supplied six runs off eight hits at the plate, with Jenna Hill and Madison Yackeren each leading the efforts with two of the hits. On the mound, Hannah Powers scooped up the win in style, striking out 12 and walking five.

For the Lady Eagles, the ball was given to Mylee Miller, who was also outstanding through the course of battle, as she struck out nine and walked three. At the plate, Mattie McCumiskey finished with two hits, driving in a run.

Coming up on Monday, both teams are back on the field in a pair of 5 p.m. contests over the road in Steuben County, as Genesee Valley/Belfast heads for the Canisteo Valley to meet the host Lady Chargers of Canisteo-Greenwood, while Fillmore travels to visit Arkport-Canaseraga.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 000 501 X – 6 8 1

FIL – Mylee Miller (LP) (CG, 9K, 3BB) and Morghyn Ross.

GVB – Hannah Powers (WP) (CG, 12K, 5BB) and Jenna Hill.

Andover/Whitesville 16, Friendship/Scio 15 (F-8)

WHITESVILLE — It was an absolutely anarchic and topsy-turvy evening in Whitesville on Thursday. From start to finish, Friendship/Scio and host Andover/Whitesville’s battle on the softball field was of epic proportions, as the two foes combined to record 31 total runs off 26 hits at the plate. The first two innings saw quite the offensive explosion before the visitors tied the game late to force extra innings.

When it came down to brass tax to try and close out the long evening, Andover/Whitesville put their stamp on the victory with some clutch small ball. With the winning run just feet away, Lilly Ordway served as the team’s hero at the plate, laying down the sacrifice bunt to bring in the game-winning run to end the game in walk-off fashion, as they edged their way past Friendship/Scio with a 16-15 victory in eight innings.

“You wouldn’t think a 16-15 game could be called a good game, but this one was a lot of fun,” Andover/Whitesville coach Al Barber said. “I am happy for our girls who fought back from way down after some sloppy play early on to hold Friendship/Scio at bay when they needed to. Lilly Harrington came on in relief and did a wonderful job, and she jump-started our bats with hers before a little small ball took care of business later on. I am very proud of those Friendship/Scio girls who showed absolutely no let-up, ever. They are a very good, young team.”

Both teams made an overexuberant amount of noise through the first two innings at the plate, beginning with a monstrous first outing from Friendship/Scio, who wreaked havoc with a giant seven-run first inning that was partially generated by a big two-run single off the bat of Alexiss Herring to coast ahead first. The Friendship/Scio lead would ultimately reach eight runs entering the second inning, but Andover/Whitesville (3-3) provided a massive haymaker of their own a short time later.

In the bottom of the second, the hosts exploded onto the scene with a big inning of their own, taking a 9-1 deficit and flipping it upside down with a nine-run spurt off a plethora of special teams plays, along with two RBI doubles off the bats of Brynna Gaylord and Naudia Pierson to seize a 10-9 advantage.

After Andover/Whitesville branched their lead out to a pair after three innings, Friendship/Scio (0-5) once again took matters into their own hands by taking the lead back, scratching across five fourth inning runs after nearly going two times through their lineup to take a 14-11 lead. The rest of the scoring ahead was done by Andover/Whitesville, who strung together four more runs across the next three innings of play to even the score and pull ahead leading up to another game-tying run in the seventh to force extra innings.

With the score all tied up at 15 and the visitors coming away empty-handed in the top of the eighth, the ball was now in Andover/Whitesville’s court to finish off a tremendous high octane battle. The hosts proceeded to do just that with some small ball in the infield, as Lilly Ordway drove home the game-winning run on an excellent bunt to send the Andover/Whitesville dugout into a frenzy.

Andover/Whitesville finished with 16 runs off 16 total hits, with Brynn Gaylord and her 4-for-6 outing at the dish propelling the efforts, as she recorded two doubles and scored twice. Avery Hoffman had three hits, while Lilly Harrington had three hits of her own, including a triple, and scored three times. In the circle, the win was Harrington’s to claim, as she assembled a stellar outing of relief behind two strikeouts and a walk.

On the other side, Friendship/Scio pasted together a 15-run effort off 10 hits, with Morgan Holcomb leading the way with three hits. Kaydence Sadler and Alexiss Herring each had two hits to chip in. On the mound, Emily Lamberson assembled a sterling outing of relief, striking out seven and walking four beginning in the second until the very end. The team will return to action back home in Friendship on Saturday, weather permitting, for a 12 p.m. first pitch against Lima Christian.

Andover/Whitesville is now off until Wednesday night for a road trip to Stan Harris Field in Richburg, as they face-off against the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Two different pitchers for the visiting Lady Eagles combined to hold Hinsdale (1-6) to just three hits at the plate, as they scored at least a run across the first four innings to set up shop for their advantage, using a combination of 11 walks and five errors to aid their special teams cause. GOLF

Wellsville 195, Genesee Valley/Belfast 200

WELLSVILLE — In their second meeting in just over two weeks, it was yet another tight battle right down to the finish line once again for both Wellsville and Genesee Valley/Belfast at the Wellsville Country Club on a bright and sunny Thursday afternoon.

With Genesee Valley/Belfast starting their campaign with the upper-hand against the Lions, their final meeting of the regular season saw a complete reverse effect. Despite Grant Preston firing the match’s medalist round for a fifth straight time, it was a strong balance on the Wellsville scorecard that paved the way towards glory for the first time this campaign, as they split the season series right down the middle with a narrow 195-200 victory.

The Lions (1-2) saw two different golfers strike their way up to the top of the scorecard at the conclusion of battle, as both Jackson Shoughrue and Rowen Ader each shared the team’s lowest round — a score of 46. Following up was Fletcher Kaye and his round of 50, while Blake Kalkhof finished off the efforts for the “visiting” team with his round of 53.

Host Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-1) was electrified by another dynamic round of golf from Preston, as he proceeded to fire his best round of the campaign thus far, finishing with the medalist round of 40. Behind him was Will Guilford, who concluded with a round of 50. Afton Hamer carded a 53, while Jordan White-Phipps had a 57 to add into the mix.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to rebound back into the win column on Monday, where they will travel to the Woodlynn Hills Golf Course in Nunda to meet the host Keshequa Wildcats at 4:30 p.m.

Wellsville will close out their week back at the Wellsville Country Club today with their third straight match, hosting the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines at 4 p.m.

Fillmore 198, Cuba-Rushford 206

RUSHFORD — Following their season-opening defeat to the hands of Genesee Valley/Belfast earlier this week, the Eagles of Fillmore have found their groove on the links. On Thursday it was no different, as they springboarded over the .500 mark with back-to-back wins in a 24-hour span, squeezing their way past host Cuba-Rushford at Allegany Hills with a 198-206 victory.

The Eagles (2-1) were captained by the medalist round from Anderson Wiltsey, who set the music by firing home the match-low round of 42. Aiden Freeman chipped in with his round of 48. Sam Cool was right behind him with his round of 49, while Evan Valentine rounded off the scorecard with a 59.

Opposite the Eagles, it was a team-low round of 48 shot by Zach Deck that helped lay the foundation down for the Rebels (0-4). Coen Kellogg was next in line on the scorecard, as he finished with a round of 49. Xavier Saulter pitched in with a 52, while Ethan Fries rounded off with his round of 57.

Both teams are back in action Monday evening in a pair of 4 p.m. tee times, with Fillmore staying in Rushford to welcome in Wellsville, while Cuba-Rushford hits the road for the Bolivar Golf Club to meet the host Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg.

BOYS TENNIS

Avoca-Prattsburgh 4, Wellsville 1

WELLSVILLE — Going to battle twice in a 24-hour span can always pose a difficult challenge. Going into Thursday fresh off a strong 4-1 victory over Allegany-Limestone over the road, the Lions of Wellsville returned home looking to utilize all the momentum they gained from their visit to the Swamp.

The challenge ahead next, in their second game of a four-game, four-day set, was a Section V perennial on the tennis court: the Avoca-Prattsburgh Titans. On Thursday, the tennis stalwarts showed every reason why they remain amongst the Section’s elite, as they brought out the brooms across all three singles matches to capture the match victory in the Lion’s Den, rolling towards what was a 4-1 match victory.

Elias Putnam, Gavin Mills and Joshua Dabby were all responsible in aiding the Titans towards glory in the singles department, with Putnam, the reigning Section V, Class B4 runner-up, taking control of the action early at first singles, as he cruised along to capture a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wellsville’s Wheeler Dahlgren at first singles. Behind him, Mills chipped in with a 6-0, 6-1 win of his own over Michael Bidzerkowny at second singles, while Dabby outlasted Jeremiah Pensyl at third singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win to finish off the match win.

The Lions (3-2) were able to score their first win on the docket from the first doubles team of Keenen O’Connor and Liam Smith, as the two competitors were taken the distance in the first set of action, but showed a tremendous amount of resilience to keep the momentum holstered in their favor against Avoca-Prattsburgh’s Braelynn Dowdle and PJ Nichols, as they went towards a 6-4, 6-0 win.

Avoca-Prattsburgh witnessed the second doubles team of Landon White and Gracyn Rumsey survive a first-set tiebreak, using every bit of the momentum for a second-set shutout of Wellsville’s Jonah MacCartney and Carter Newman, as they posted the 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 win.
