Thursday Roundup: Lady Lions, behind dominant performance from Cowburn, win extra-inning battle at B-R; Gordon blasts three homers in GV’s win at Hinsdale
RICHBURG — It was a day that marked the renewal of one of Allegany County’s more prominent rivalries from within the softball scene — Wellsville and Bolivar-Richburg. If there was evidence of that, their first clash in two years was a starting point. One inning after another, zeroes were traded between the foes.
To the point where not one, but two extra sessions were needed to complete the game. It would boil down to a matter of who would strike first in the ninth inning. In that inning, the Lady Lions took the opportunity to finally break the ice, using baserunning to their advantage to score both of their runs in the top half to take the lead. Despite the Lady Wolverines and their attempt to climb on board, Wellsville would hold them off in the end, taking the 2-1 decision in nine innings.
The day was highlighted with each team registering four hits in the entirety of the game, with Wellsville’s Mackenzie Cowburn and Bolivar-Richburg’s Jessica Majot wheeling and dealing in the circle. It was eventually a battle that Cowburn found her way out on top of, scoring another performance of sheer dominance, handing out 14 chairs to go with one walk in her four-hit victory for the Lady Lions (2-0) over the road.
“It was a well-played game by both teams,” said Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell. “Jess Majot and Mackenzie Cowburn pitched great for both teams in the circle. You don’t really see a game like this too often, especially when it’s right at the beginning of the season. I think it makes both programs excited for what’s to come.”
As for their offensive efforts, the Lady Lions scored both runs in the top half of the ninth inning using their heads-up baserunning abilities to break the game open. In the bottom half, the Lady Wolverines (1-1) did not go down without a fight however, as Majot provided a presence at the plate to go with her defensive outing in the circle, accounting for the team’s lone run off a sacrifice fly to center.
But the game would end two batters later on a pop-out to third base, and then one last strikeout from the arm of Cowburn, preserving the win for Wellsville.
Leading the bats for the Lady Lions was Maddie Spicer, who recorded a double and scored one of the team’s two runs. Cowburn, Matti Burke and Emma Dunaway each added a hit. On the other side, Majot struck out three and walked one in her four-hit performance for Bolivar-Richburg, whilst adding two of the team’s four hits at the plate. McKinlee and Madigan Harris each had a single to round off the offense for the hosts in gray and red, who will have a quick turnaround back over the road tonight, if weather permits, facing Friendship at 5 p.m.
As for the Lady Lions, momentum was gained for their next road trip bright and early Saturday morning, as they visit Arkport/Canaseraga for two games, beginning at 10 a.m.

Friendship 6, Belfast 4
BELFAST — Although the scoreboard for much of the evening indicated a close affair between the Lady Golden Eagles and Lady Bulldogs, the night would belong to Friendship’s Nevaeh Ross, Thursday night. Not only did the young phenom provide a dominant showing from within the circle, but she also provided a stinging blow to Belfast in the top of the seventh.
With a 5-4 lead in hand, Ross came through for the Lady Golden Eagles with her bat, as she slugged a massive solo home run to extend the team’s lead from one to a pair, ultimately securing their narrow lead for good, as they went on to pick up their first triumph of the shortened season by a 6-4 count over the Lady Bulldogs.
“I’ll give credit where credit is due, Nevaeh pitched lights out for Friendship. Emma (Sullivan) did her job as well and they both pitched fantastic games, but Nevaeh is the best pitcher in the County, and she proved that tonight,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Mark Sullivan. “We have to learn from our crucial mistakes, and the errors hurt us tonight. I give my girls credit, they dug back by getting that one run back, and they did it for four straight innings. For this early in the season, it felt like a Sectional game.”
To go with Friendship’s (1-0) momentous home run, Ross paired it alongside the County’s second no-hit performance of the season, as she held Belfast at bay behind a dominant 18-strikeout outing to put a bow on a bright season debut.
The second no-hitter comes days after the County saw its first come from Friendship’s opposition — Belfast’s Emma Sullivan, who in return, twirled a nine-strikeout effort to lead the Lady Bulldogs (1-1). Five of the six runs the Lady Golden Eagles runs were scored unearned. Helping further the cause on offense for Friendship, was Caitlin Stewart, who went 2-for-4.
Friendship will have a quick turnaround tonight, if the weather permits, as they return home to host Bolivar-Richburg in a 5 p.m. first pitch. As for Belfast, they stay home for another 7 p.m. battle under the lights against Genesee Valley, Saturday night.

Fillmore 12, Cuba-Rushford 3
FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore did not shy away from starting their Thursday night battle with Cuba-Rushford off strong out of the gates, as they scored 11 of their 12 runs right in the first three innings of play, building a lead they never looked back from to successfully rebound from their season-opening loss to Bolivar-Richburg earlier this week with a 12-3 home win over the Lady Rebels.
“Kirstin (Frazier) pitched well for us tonight with those nine strikeouts she had, and she gave up only one hit,” Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley said. “Our defense committed way too many errors, so we will need to spend time cleaning that up in the days before our next game, next week. But it was a unique flow of a game tonight, and we are glad to get our first win.”
Frazier twirled a one-hit gem for the Lady Eagles (1-1) inside the circle, striking out nine Lady Rebels and walking five in her complete game effort. On offense, the hosts gathered just four hits with Torann Wolfer leading the way with two of them, scoring four times in the process. For Cuba-Rushford (0-3), Sydney Howard struck out five and walked two in relief, while Lillian Forward contributed the team’s lone hit on a single.
Both teams will have the Andover Lady Panthers up next on their schedule, with Cuba-Rushford getting first crack back home bright and early Saturday morning, hosting a 10 a.m. first pitch. Fillmore will take an extended break away before returning to action over the road in Andover, Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

BASEBALL
Wellsville 5, Bolivar-Richburg 4
WELLSVILLE — While both softball teams did battle until the very end over in Richburg, in Wellsville, it was more of the same between the Wolverines and Lions on Thursday.
Wellsville was holding a one-run lead when Bolivar-Richburg threatened to tie with the deadlocking runner 90 feet from reaching home. Down to their final out, the Lions bent but didn’t break, keeping the runner stranded to be awarded the 5-4 edge.
“We had a great practice yesterday with some great batting practice and some simple conversations. We were destined to break out, and even though we had five hits, we hit the balls on the screws,” Lions coach Marc Agnello said. “They didn’t find the holes, and that’s baseball. We have to do some work on defense, but we’ll be okay. We seemed like we had a five-run lead and relaxed a little bit. I called for time to tell them to stop the bleeding after the errors and walks, and they did with keeping that tying run on to end the game.”
Both teams combined to record seven total hits, with Wellsville (1-1) taking the 5-2 advantage. The Lions scored all five of their runs right from the get-go in the first three innings, netting a 5-1 lead. That comes behind a massive outing put on by Logan Dunbar.
Dunbar held the Wolverines still for the majority of the contest, riding along the groove he created with 10 strikeouts and just one walk to pick up the victory for the hosts in orange and black.
“Logan pitched absolutely great, and we’ve been waiting for that to happen,” Agnello said. “He spotted the ball where he wanted it, and he took command of it. There’s no sense of extending him after that awesome performance. It’s a long season in a short amount of time, so we want to get the most we can out of him.”
Alex Ordiway came on in the sixth inning to help preserve the win with four strikeouts, and two walks for the Lions. On offense, Cody Costello had the leading bat, going 2-for-2 with a double. Liam McKinley, Jere Havens and Cooper Brockway added a hit each.
On the other side, Trey Buchholz struck out four and walked three in his relief appearance. He, along with Logan Bess, recorded both the team’s hits off singles. Bolivar-Richburg would use their baserunning to their advantage to mount a late comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring three key runs to cut their deficit.
But Wellsville would manage to keep the game-tying runner aboard third base to seal the victory, their first of the season.
The Lions will look to keep the momentum rolling into Saturday morning, as they host a 10 a.m. twinbill with Arkport/Canaseraga, beginning with their 7-7 suspended game from April 30 before beginning a new seven-inning contest following the conclusion.
As for Bolivar-Richburg, their quick turnaround takes effect back home tonight with Friendship/Scio coming to town for a 5 p.m. visit.

After the Bobcats kicked the tires on a 4-0 lead after the first two innings of play, Genesee Valley (1-1) began to settle in on offense, scoring all 17 of their runs across the next four frames, including an eight-run third inning highlighted by Gordon’s offensive slugfest.
Four other Jaguars recorded at least a pair of hits each, with Joe Ward going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Trent Scott, Thai Norasethaporn and Nate Slawson each recorded a pair of hits, with Scott driving in three runs along the way.

Sisson picked up the win in his four-inning tenure for the Eagles (1-1), striking out 11 and walking three while Buck added four strikeouts of his own to hold Cuba-Rushford at bay. Fillmore recorded just six hits at the plate, with a pair of Eagles recording at least a pair.

The Rebels (1-1) garnered their lone hit late in the seventh inning from Trent Chamberlain, who recorded a single. On the mound, Benson McCumiskey tallied four strikeouts and three walks in his three innings of relief.

Belfast 13, Friendship/Scio 9
FRIENDSHIP — In a game that saw 22 runs scored on 19 combined hits, it was a back and forth duel for Scio and Friendship’s first game as a combined unit this season on Thursday, when they took on Belfast.
When it came down to brass tax however, the visiting Bulldogs had the last word with a one-run lead entering the seventh, as they extended it insurmountably with a three-run frame that kept them in the driver’s seat for good, ultimately recording the 13-9 run win over the Golden Eagles.
Through the first four innings both teams on offense, and defense weaved their way through a teeter-totter battle that saw Friendship/Scio (0-1) jump ahead first with a 4-2 lead. It was also one that Bulldogs hurler Stephen Struckmann and Golden Eagles pitcher Cam Loucks engage on the mound, each recording six strikeouts in their starts.
At the plate, it was Loucks that got the hosts going early with his perfect 4-for-4 day that included a pair of doubles, three total RBI and two runs scored. But toward the tail end of the game, it was the Bulldogs (2-1) that saw their offense come to life, scoring eight of the last nine runs to pull ahead permanently.
Max Miller led the bats for the Bulldogs with a 3-for-5 outing, and three runs scored.
Belfast will hit the road once more Saturday afternoon, as they visit the Genesee Valley Jaguars for a 1 p.m. tussle. As for Friendship/Scio, they hit the road themselves in a quick turnaround at Bolivar-Richburg, beginning at 5 p.m.

GOLF
Wellsville 201, Hornell 225
WELLSVILLE — It’s been a matchup every year that provides Wellsville numerous challenges on the links. When Hornell came to town on Thursday, it was no different.
Only this time, the Lions made sure they got the job done, as they remained undefeated on the season at 4-0, carding a 201-225 victory over their longtime rival from the next county over to the east at the Wellsville Country Club.
“It was a pretty day today, and that’s rare as of late,” said Lions coach Brian Meyers. “Even though we had some struggles, we had a few others pick it up to compensate for it. It’s always a challenge when we face Hornell every year, and it’s an even better reward to come out of it with a win.”
Leading the charge for the Lions on the scorecard was Lance Grantier, who fired a team-low round of 43. Aidan Hart and Ethan Bailey both followed with rounds of 52, while Mason Parks chipped in with his round of 54.
The Lions will go for five straight victories on the links today, if weather permits, as they prepare to visit the Bolivar Golf Club to take on the host Wolverines at 4 p.m.

RUSHFORD — All four of Fillmore’s top golfers put on spectacular showings on the links Thursday afternoon at Allegheny Hills in Rushford, as the Eagles used it to their fullest advantage to come away with the massive 177-290 victory over visiting Genesee Valley.

“I am super proud of how well everyone shot tonight. In fact, I had four kids shoot their personal bests,” Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “This is my shoutout to Dylan, he started the season in a struggle by his standards, but he knocked it out of the park tonight. He carded a score he was really proud of, and I was proud of him for that.”
Genesee Valley (0-2) was led by Dakota Hemphill and Ashley McRae, as they both carded team-leading rounds of 67. Colton Cowburn and Zach Davis each added in rounds to 78 to round off the Jaguars, who head for the Wellsville Country Club to take on Hinsdale in their 4 p.m. home match today, weather permitting.

Wellsville sweeps debut in tri-meet with Scio, Cuba-Rushford (Wed.)

Across both boys and girls squads, the playing field was nearly dead even across the board, but in the end, it was the Lions that provided the light that shone the brightest, as they swept the day’s festivities with victories on both sides over the Tigers and Rebels, collecting 130 points as a combined unit.
On the boys side, Wellsville collected five total victories, three of them coming individually with Gavan Dickerson and Ben Jordan leading the way on the track, garnering victories in the 800 run (2:36.5) and 3200 run (13:10.1) respectively.
