Wednesday Roundup: Harris, Lady Wolverines use efficiency to power up 3-0 home shutout over And/Whi; Borden’s PK scores 1-0 shutout for GV/Belfast over Lady Lions

BOLIVAR — After losses to the hands of both Fillmore and Cuba-Rushford in their last two games, the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg saw a prime opportunity to rebound back home at Dunsmore-Latimer Field on Wednesday.

Their opposition — Andover/Whitesville, a team that can find their groove on offense at any given point on the frontlines. As a result, the visitors outshot Bolivar-Richburg by double digits. But that was when efficiency came into play.

The Lady Wolverines had it, and they had McKinlee Harris at the forefront of it. Despite the hosts in black and red totaling just seven shots across 80 minutes, the Lady Wolverines junior found the back of the net on three different occasions, recording the hat trick to power up a 3-0 shutout over Andover/Whitesville to complete their bounce back.

The first half saw the Lady Wolverines (5-4) provide some stout defense against Andover/Whitesville after Harris found the back of the net in the first 10 minutes of play off a Teegan Sibble, clearing multiple attempts on goal away to keep the visitors at bay behind a one-goal lead when halftime approached.

Later on, Andover/Whitesville (4-6) continued their offensive momentum shift right in the beginning of the second half with a few more chances to score on the Bolivar-Richburg net, with Zoey Lee and Maria Riloba leading the way, the latter of the rushes being a splitting of the defense to apply a shot on goal. Both attempts were saved by Malayna Ayers in goal, who stopped all 17 shots seen for the Lady Wolverines.

Right before the 10 minute mark, McKinlee Harris would find the back of the net for her second of the game, beginning with a fantastic pass from the back from Madigan Harris, to McKinlee on the breakway, sending the ball to the far post to extend Bolivar-Richburg’s lead.

Six minutes later, the scoring was finished off by Harris at the 25 minute mark off a pass from Sarah Perkins at midfield. Harris would then take care of the rest by finessing her way past the Andover/Whitesville defense to bury the chance to record the hat trick.

Even though the goal scoring stopped, many more chances for the Lady Wolverines were collected over the course of the last 20 minutes of the game to keep the pressure on Andover/Whitesville for good.

In goal for Andover/Whitesville, Brynn Scholl made four saves. The team will now hit the road Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. first kick against Alfred-Almond.

As for the Lady Wolverines, they jump right back on the field tonight with a 5 p.m. kick in Friendship, taking on host Friendship/Scio.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 1, Wellsville 0

BELMONT — The penalty kick can provide a golden opportunity for a team to grab the upper hand on their opposition. The massive entitlement is the epitome of a momentum changer, hit or miss.

That chance came just past midway in the first half in the dead heat of a scoreless tie between Wellsville and host Genesee Valley/Belfast. After a collision inside the Lady Lions box resulted in an advantage for the Jagdogs, Alicia Borden stepped up to the plate.

After the signal to kick, that chance was buried, as the Genesee Valley/Belfast senior absolutely struck gold to the top right corner of the cage to put the hosts in green on the board, and in the lead for the remainder of the game, as they staved off late pushes by Wellsville down the stretch to keep their 1-0 shutout in tact.

“It was nice to have another nail-biter right to the end,” GV/Belfast co-coach Lisa Scott-Schneider said. “Wellsville never quit and we did not seal the deal on some golden opportunities. We had some great effort and a collision with one of our girls and their keeper gave us the penalty kick chance, and Alicia nailed a beauty in the upper right 90 to give us the lead. This was a great game, and we’re looking forward to keeping it going Saturday on Homecoming.”

Borden’s shot was one of nine Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-3) applied on goal, as they outshot Wellsville by a 9-4 total count across all 80 minutes. Ashley Burrows would record the victory in between the pipes for the hosts, stopping all four shots. On the other side, Makenna Dunbar set aside eight shots for the Lady Lions (4-7).

Genesee Valley/Belfast hops back onto Judy Bliven Field Saturday night for a 6:30 p.m. Homecoming kick against incoming Friendship/Scio, while Wellsville hits the road once more tonight for a 5 p.m. first kick at Campbell-Savona.

Fillmore 6, Cuba-Rushford 1

FILLMORE — The Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford struck while the iron was hot in the beginning stages of the opening half, getting the upper hand on undefeated Fillmore with the first lead of the night.

But the host Lady Eagles would remain vigilant, and as a result, the offense began to swarm the Cuba-Rushford net with six unanswered goals, four of them coming in the first half, as they became the first team in Allegany County to reach 10 wins on the season by remaining undefeated with a 6-1 home victory on Wednesday.

“We had a good first 10 minutes, but we just couldn’t punch one in. Cuba-Rushford had a chance at the other end, and they scored a nice one,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “We responded quick and continued creating opportunities, and eventually we punched in a few and started to diversify our attack. Our outside mids and defenders got involved offensively, and it created a lot more space for us. We continue to try and get better, and Cuba-Rushford made us change our approach a bit tonight. I thought we responded very well to it.”

Shae Maples would get the Lady Rebels on the board first just over 10 minutes into the game, as she made a run to the Fillmore cage after picking up the ball from further down the field to record her second goal of the season to break the ice. But later on, the lead would not hold, as Fillmore (10-0) went on to score six straight goals, led by Hope Russell’s hat trick beginning with her first to tie the game off on one of Grace Russell’s two assists at the midway mark.

The Lady Eagles would grab the lead two minutes removed from their first with the first of two goals off the foot of Malory DeRock. The newly founded advantage grew to 4-1 when the first half came to a close with Torann Wolfer and Hope Russell scoring back-to-back goals in the waning minutes to close out strong.

DeRock and Russell would finish off the Lady Eagles scoring with the remaining two goals on the board, with Russell scoring five minutes in and then DeRock followed with her second just five minutes removed. All six shots jumpstarted a 16-shot tenure on offense for the hosts in black and green, outshooting the Lady Rebels (6-5) by a 16-4 count.

In net, Preslee Miller and Alex Thur combined to record three saves for the Lady Eagles, while Tara Duvall made 10 stops for Cuba-Rushford.

Fillmore will go for 11 in a row back on their home field Friday night in a 7 p.m. first kick against incoming Olean, while Cuba-Rushford looks for a bounce back performance on the road at Canisteo-Greenwood, beginning at 12 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast 2

BELMONT — Back and forth both Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley/Belfast went all throughout the night, Wednesday night.

It would all come down to the night’s final set, and in the end, it was the bounce back that proved to be greater than the momentum build. The visiting Lady Rebels recovered from a fourth-set loss to the hosts with a big fifth-set victory to rally from behind and complete the 3-2 edging of host Genesee Valley/Belfast.

The Lady Rebels (2-3) were led by a juggernaut evening from Brianna Green, who recorded a game-high 20 kills to go with five digs, two aces and one block. “I thought this was the best game that we’ve played all year,” said GV/Belfast coach Darren Bradt. “We are definitely improving, but we also know that we still have a lot to work on. I believe the team is starting to gel, and they’re starting to understand more about the game. I’ve been working on teaching them that there are some better things than your win/loss record. Sometimes, you measure your games in smiley faces or frowns. Tonight may have been a loss, but this was a huge smiley face.”

Cuba-Rushford hits the road once more tonight with a 6 p.m. first serve against host Houghton Academy, while Genesee Valley/Belfast returns to action back on their home floor Saturday afternoon in a 12:30 p.m. first serve against Arkport/Canaseraga.
