Thursday Roundup: Fillmore’s Mullen becomes Allegany County’s All-Time winningest coach after 4-1 Eagles win over C-R

FILLMORE — There has been a lot that one of the Allegany County’s best to ever roam the sidelines has experienced over his 30+ years coaching boys soccer.

24 Allegany County League titles in 32 years, five Section V and Far West Regional titles, as well as being a 10-time Section V, Class D Coach of the Year. Lest we forget, an 82% winning percentage, which is fourth best in Section V history.

You can also add ‘Allegany County Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductee’ — an honor that was officially received after a long wait last weekend, to a very luminous and illustrious resume that belongs to Fillmore’s Jamie Mullen.

And yet, there was a chance to add even more. That opportunity came on a chilly Thursday night on their home field against Cuba-Rushford.

Despite a scoreless tie at the half, the fireworks came in the next with all five goals in the game being scored in the last 40 minute session. Fillmore would record the bulk of those, netting four from four different Eagles to pull away from the Rebels in a historic 4-1 win.

The victory would be the 455th of Mullen’s legendary career, and it would be one that would allow him to surpass legendary Andover and Belfast head coach Rich Sullivan at the top of Allegany County’s All-Time leading list of coaching giants, becoming the area’s winningest.

His son, assistant coach Jordan Mullen, said to share the field with his father has been an absolute honor to have.

“This record has so much less to do about wins, and so much to do with people that have been a part of those wins. Playing, coaching, spectating, and witnessing one of the area’s greatest to ever coach, across all sports.” he said. “While the stats are staggering, I know the thing my father has always taught me from day one, is your legacy is fleeting if your greatest accomplishment is records. He has always embodied the importance of relationship with those around, and most importantly, his players.”

Mullen added, “His athletes always knew that his love, support, and interest in them didn’t stop on the field. It transcended into all areas of their lives to make each and every player know that Fillmore Soccer is a heck of a lot more about making those around better. As his son, former player and now assistant coach, I have come to realize that when all is said and done, having hundreds of athletes feel loved and supported beyond this game is all that really matters. The legacy of Coach is far greater than the wins. He has created a dynasty through a culture of loving others first. It’s a special thing for him, the program, and Fillmore itself.”

The win moves him into seventh place all-time on the Section V leaderboard with a record of 455-97-42 overall, and just one win away from making another big leap up the Section’s leaderboard into sixth overall.

As for the game, the Eagles (9-2) rolled toward victory behind four goals from four different scorers, as Zach Sisson, Brent Zubikowski, Graham Cahill and Deen Muzaid-Omar all sparked an offensive outing that saw the team rack up a 16-5 outshooting of Cuba-Rushford in the contest. Muzaid-Omar would dish out two assists to both Sisson and Cahill along the way, while Eben Schilke recorded a helper on Zubikowski’s strike, and Sisson on Muzaid-Omar’s.

The Rebels (3-6-1) saw Braeden Wight provide a pass onward to Jacob Smith for the team’s lone goal to end the shutout stand in the second half. In goal, Mike McCumiskey recorded three saves for the hosts to earn the win, while Jarrett Campbell made 11 saves for the visitors in white and blue.

Both teams are back in action Monday night in a pair of 5 p.m. contests, where Mullen and the Eagles will head for Hinsdale to visit the Bobcats, while Cuba-Rushford hits the road once more to visit Houghton Academy.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 2, Wellsville 0

BELMONT — Thursday night marked a first in the long career of Genesee Valley/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan, as his squad took the field in the Jungle to take on Wellsville in their only meeting of the season.

It was also a contest where a scoreless deadlock needed to be broken after both teams fought through the midfield in the opening 40 minutes of play.

Luckily for Genesee Valley/Belfast, Matt Weaver was at the ready, as the senior provided a hot second half of play, scoring both of the team’s goals to grab the upper hand on the visiting Lions for good, soaring to a 2-0 shutout victory.

“This was the first time I’ve had the experience to play Wellsville in my career,” said Sullivan. “It was a good game all the way around, and both teams were pretty much evenly matched. We both competed very well, but we were able to control the midfield in the second half. That was pretty much the difference maker. Wellsville’s a quality team, and their goal was stout. We had Thai in goal, and he had just as good of a night back there."

Justin Hill would pick up an assist on Weaver’s second goal, a big piece of insurance for Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-3) coming down the stretch to keep their lead in tact against Wellsville. In all, the hosts recorded a 7-6 advantage over the Lions (4-5-1) in the shot department.

Norasethaporn recorded the win between the posts, recording six saves. Logan Dunbar made five saves on the other end for Wellsville, who returns home to host Port Allegany in a 5 p.m. contest on Monday.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will return to the Jungle for Homecoming this Saturday night, as they host the Friendship Golden Eagles in a 4:30 p.m. battle.

Bolivar-Richburg 5, Andover/Whitesville 0

BOLIVAR — Wyatt Karnuth had the hot leg across all 80 minutes for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, as he played a role in four of the team’s five total goals, scoring a hat trick and recording a helper to fuel the offense’s 5-0 shutout over visiting Andover/Whitesville, Thursday evening at Dunsmore-Latimer Field.

Karnuth scored a first half hat trick to lead the Wolverines (8-3-2) offense, with his first coming just over two minutes into the game off one of two assists from Reiss Gaines, who also had the remaining two goals for the team.

At the 35:27 mark, Karnuth extended Bolivar-Richburg’s lead to a pair on his second connection with Gaines, and then a complete flip-flop for a 3-0 lead to complete a strand of goals in the first 10 minutes of play with Gaines’ first goal from Karnuth.

The Wolverines would finish with a 4-0 lead at the half with Karnuth’s hat trick-clinching goal with 13:52 remaining until the break, connecting with Ian Unfus from behind to tuck the goal away.

It would remain a four-goal lead until the 79th minute when Gaines wrapped up the offensive slugfest with his second goal of the game off a pass provided by Aydin Sisson. The Wolverines collected 16 shots in total to power the victory, outshooting Andover/Whitesville (1-10) by a 16-3 count.

David Abdo would go on to make all three stops to record the shutout in goal for Bolivar-Richburg, while Carson Frungillo made 11 saves for Andover/Whitesville, who continues their road swing on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. first kick against Friendship.

Bolivar-Richburg will now go for their fifth win in the last six games after an extended time away, as they hit the road next Saturday night for a 4:30 p.m. visit to the Jungle against host Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Scio 6, Friendship 2

SCIO — A pair of goals scored by Jordan White and a penalty kick fueled by Jaxon Warboys was a start that the Tigers of Scio built in the first 40 minutes of play in their return to action on Thursday, as they recorded a 3-0 first half lead and never looked back on a 6-2 home win over Friendship.

White was the first to give the Tigers (4-5-1) the early 2-0 lead behind his pair of goals off two Lazar Bulajic assists on their way into the Friendship zone. Later on, Warboys would conclude the scoring with a capitalized penalty kick.

In the final 40 minute session, Scio would record three more goals from three different Tigers, as Bulajic, Brendan Loucks and Ethan Davenport all tallied goals of their own. White would also garner an assist on Bulajic’s goal.

Friendship (0-10) saw Jerome Harmon score both of their goals in the second half to end the possibility of a shutout for the Tigers.

The Tigers outshot the Golden Eagles by a 23-4 total count, with Landon Arnold making two stops for the hosts. On the other end, Taylor Moore set aside 17 total shots.

Scio will return to their home field Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. clash under the lights against incoming Jasper-Troupsburg, while Friendship continues their road trip to Belmont, visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 4:30 p.m. contest.

Northstar 4, Houghton Academy 0

ROCHESTER — All host Northstar needed was the first 40 minutes to make their presence known at Grace & Truth Sports Park on Thursday, as they scored three of their four total goals right in the opening half to get the jump on visiting Houghton Academy to record the 4-0 shutout.

The Panthers (3-5) were outshot by the host Knights by a 17-7 total count, with Chris Habecker putting a stop on 10 shots in between the posts.

On Saturday, Houghton Academy heads back on the road, as they visit the hot Hinsdale Bobcats, winners of six straight, in a 1 p.m. first kick.

GIRLS SOCCER

Campbell-Savona 2, Wellsville 1

CAMPBELL — The Lady Panthers of Campbell-Savona got the game started with the icebreaking goal in the beginning stages of the first half on Thursday against visiting Wellsville.

Right before the opening half reached its conclusion, the Lady Lions managed to find a way and tie the game up heading into the final session.

The one-all deadlock would remain glued together by the time the last 10 minutes of play approached. That would be controlled by Campbell-Savona, who made sure they jumped back into the driver’s seat with the game-winner with 8:10 left to play, stealing the 2-1 home win away over the Lady Lions.

Vena O’Dell was responsible for one of Wellsville’s (4-8) nine total shots on the Campbell-Savona cage, as she scored with 6:17 remaining in the first half to tie the game, burying a feed provided by Hailey Lanphier from the middle.

In goal, Makenna Dunbar was active in goal for the Lady Lions, stopping 14 of the 16 shots applied on the cage.

Wellsville will look to rebound back home Tuesday night in a 5 p.m. first kick against the incoming Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg.

Bolivar-Richburg 4, Friendship/Scio 1

FRIENDSHIP — McKinlee and Madigan Harris were at the top of their game once more for the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines and their quick return to the field on Thursday, as they each scored a pair of goals, two in each half to set up a 4-1 road win against Friendship/Scio.

The siblings would score back-to-back goals after Logan Roberts opened up the scoring for Friendship/Scio just before the midway point to break the ice, each scoring a goal themselves in a five-minute span past midway to give the Lady Wolverines (6-4) the 2-1 lead at the half.

The lead was eventually built upon with two more big pieces of insurance to make sure their lead was kept in tact, as the Harris’ scored their final goals in the last 10 minutes of play to pull away for good, including a penalty kick goal from McKinlee at the 10:01 mark.

Teegan Sibble would garner an assist on Madigan’s final tally at the 8:52 mark of the final session. The Lady Wolverines would go on to outshoot Friendship/Scio (3-7-1) by a 17-12 total count with Malayna Ayers recording the win behind 10 saves.

On the other end, Nevaeh Ross stopped 12 shots for the hosts, who pay a visit to the Jungle to take on Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 6:30 p.m. first kick, Saturday evening.

Bolivar-Richburg will continue their road trip after the weekend with a 5 p.m. contest in the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, visiting the Lady Lions of Wellsville.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Houghton Academy 3, Cuba-Rushford 1

HOUGHTON — Both Cuba-Rushford and Houghton Academy went back and forth, trading the first two sets with one another during their meeting on Thursday. But the winner of the second set went on to build up a big wave of momentum to carry the rest of the way.

That team was the host Lady Panthers, as they used a 25-15 victory in the game-tying set to their upmost advantage, keeping the Lady Rebels on their feet in the last two sets of the night, rolling their way towards a four-set win by a 25-18, 15-25, 25-12, 25-19 count.
