Tuesday Roundup: B-R grabs big momentum shift at end of 1st half to edge past Houghton Academy; C-R, Scio deadlock in 1-1 tie after 2nd half battle

BOLIVAR — Usually when a team is the first to strike on offense, a big burst of momentum can be built to use in their favor. Across what was a scoreless battle up and down the field, that momentum shift wasn’t built up until the last seconds of the opening half.

For Bolivar-Richburg, Reiss Gaines was able to cash in on it, using his head to his upmost advantage to secure the team’s first goal in front of the Houghton Academy net with just two seconds left on the clock to give the team the 1-0 lead at the half, and ultimately the lead for good to secure the 2-1 win over the visiting Panthers on Monday.

The goal from Gaines came off a pass from the back provided by Wyatt Karnuth to put the Wolverines (7-3-2) ahead right at the end of the session. It would ultimately leave them in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the game, despite their lead being threatened in second half by Houghton Academy (3-4).

Beforehand, the Wolverines were able to branch out their lead to a pair at the 33:32 mark of the second half from Aydin Sisson, as he recorded his goal off a helper from Landon Barkley. Just over five minutes past the goal, the Panthers cut the deficit in half to turn up the heat on Bolivar-Richburg the rest of the game behind Pauline Haensel’s tally.

But in the end, the Wolverines managed to hang on and capture the home victory at Dunsmore-Latimer Field.

On offense, the hosts managed to collect a 10-8 outshooting of the Panthers, with David Abdo making seven saves in between the pipes to earn the win. On the other side, Chris Habecker recorded eight saves for Houghton Academy, who will continue their road swing Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. visit to Hinsdale.

The Wolverines are back on their home field Thursday night with a 5 p.m. first kick scheduled against incoming Andover/Whitesville.

Cuba-Rushford 1, Scio 1

SCIO — Like their last contest in the Brock Young Tournament earlier this month, the Cuba-Rushford Rebels and Scio Tigers, after recording multiple opportunities in the offensive zone all throughout the night, needed all 100 minutes to determine the outcome.

The Rebels were able to come away winners in the original meeting in Scio, but this time around, a first. At the end of the night, both teams would record their first tie, as they scored one goal a piece in the second half of play to remain deadlocked all the way down to the final horn to end the game.

“We got some points out of it. Our guys played their hearts out, and we found a way to battle all the way back,” Tigers coach Dillon McFall said. “We didn’t play a bad game, but we’re still figuring out ways to win. We have to do a little bit more in the second half to pull these wins out, and not just in overtime. We had some really great looks, some great chances, and we have to finish them better. Hopefully that will come.”

The Tigers (3-5-1) were the first team to break the ice after a scoreless first half of play, as they grabbed the game’s first lead just past the halfway point on a play that began near midfield from Jordan White, dribbling the ball all the way down into the Cuba-Rushford box, where he delivered a fantastic ball to his left to Brenden Loucks, finishing off the chance on a one-timer past Jarrett Campbell in goal to take the lead.

The lead for the hosts in blue and yellow was held all the way until the last three minutes of regulation, as the Rebels (3-5-1) ultimately forced the 1-1 decision until the end off a corner kick from the leg of Austin Pinney, being finished off by Jacob Smith inside the Tigers box with 2:51 remaining to finish off the scoring.

In all, Scio outshot Cuba-Rushford by a 9-5 count, with Landon Arnold making four stops for the hosts. On the other side, Campbell made eight saves.

Both teams are back on the field with 7 p.m. first kicks on Thursday, with Scio remaining pat at home to host the Friendship Golden Eagles, while Cuba-Rushford heads back out on the road to visit red hot Fillmore.
