Monday Roundup: Burke, Lady Lions post five-run 2nd inning to set tone, cruise past visiting B-R with 9-4 home win; Loucks fans 14 in Fri/Scio’s win over Fillmore
WELLSVILLE — The subject line in their first meeting earlier this season in Richburg — who would strike first? The Lady Lions did that with two runs coming in the top of the ninth to take the 2-1 decision over Bolivar-Richburg back on May 6. This time around, no extra sessions were required, but the question this time around?
Who could outslug the other?
In a game that saw both electric offenses light up Tullar Field on Monday with 21 total hits being garnered, Bolivar-Richburg and Wellsville made their marks in the first two innings of play, with the Lady Wolverines tying the game in the top of the second. But in the bottom half, the script was flipped permanently.
As a response to the game-tying run provided by the Lady Wolverines, Wellsville quickly reloaded and fired off five more runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 7-2 lead on Bolivar-Richburg that they never lost, despite some late runs down the stretch, as the Lady Lions remained hot with a 9-4 season-sweeping victory over the Lady Wolverines.
In the first two innings, it was all Matti Burke for the Lady Lions (14-1), as the senior blasted an RBI double to help fuel a 2-1 lead over the Lady Wolverines heading into a second inning where she brought out the goods once more, this time on a bigger level — blasting a bases-clearing, three-run triple to give the team all the room they needed to remain out front and for good.
Burke was one of four different Lady Lions that recorded two hits at the plate, with Maddie Spicer helping the cause with her pair of his, driving in a team-high four RBI. Brazen Beckwith and Marley Adams each chipped in with two hits of their own. In the circle, Makenzie Cowburn remained unbeaten once again with another solid performance consisting of nine strikeouts and two walks to keep Bolivar-Richburg off-balanced most of the night.
“We swung the bats well, and Makenzie was in control tonight,” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.
With the loss, it ends Bolivar-Richburg’s (8-2) seven-game win streak, but the team saw a tremendous performance from Malayna Ayers on both sides of the spectrum, as she struck out six and walked three in the circle, and went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double. Madigan Harris added two hits of her own, while Jessica Majot, Kelsey Pacer, Kayli Giardini and Paityn Johnston all providing a hit of their own to round off.
Both teams will have quick turnarounds over the road tonight, with Wellsville paying a 5 p.m. visit to Hammondsport, while Bolivar-Richburg looks to regroup with a visit to Avoca/Prattsburgh, with first pitch at 5:30 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 4, Belfast 3
CUBA — Belfast’s Emma Sullivan and Cuba-Rushford’s Sydney Howard were going back and forth throughout the night for their respective teams in the circle, Monday night. It was a game that came right down to the wire with the Lady Rebels earning the one-run lead on the Lady Bulldogs.
The last four runs of the game were scored in the seventh inning, with Belfast earning the jump ahead in the top half. The only way for Cuba-Rushford to win the game was in walk-off fashion. Ella Jaffe would do just that, as the Lady Rebels junior walked it off for her team with the bases loaded and two outs on the board, driving a massive double to the outfield to score the two runs they would need to clinch the 4-3 thrilling victory.
“It’s funny because Belfast called for time, and that allowed me to talk to Ella before her hit. She said she was nervous at the plate, and then I told her to hit the ball like she normally would. And she did,” Lady Rebels coach Diana Joseph said. “It was a close game throughout all seven innings, and the teams were well-matched. It was a game I enjoyed coaching, because it could have went either way. My girls stepped up in that last inning and took the win. Especially with it being Senior Night, this was a great way to send them out.”
The Lady Rebels (3-6) compiled four runs off 10 total hits at the plate, with four different batters recording a pair each at the plate including Jaffe’s walk-off, two-run double that gave the team the win. Riley Keller, Elysa Tylor and Hunter Jahnke all added two hits, with Jahnke blasting a double along the way. In the circle, it was Howard that outduel Sullivan in the end for the hosts, striking out 15 and walking 11 to twirl a two-hit complete game.
Belfast (5-3) took the lead early on in the top of the fourth inning, right before Cuba-Rushford found a way to tie it up at one with a run of their own coming in the bottom half. Entering the last inning, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves behind a pair of runs, and recorded just that in the seventh to spring ahead one more time with a 3-2 lead.
But with the bases loaded behind Sullivan in the circle, the Lady Rebels would find a way to walk it off behind Jaffe’s hit. Sullivan finished with six strikeouts and one walk in her complete game. At the plate, Sondra Guilford and Harley Proctor both recorded a single.
Cuba-Rushford will look to continue their winning ways on the road tonight with a 5 p.m. first pitch slated for their trip to Genesee Valley, while Belfast looks to steer the ship back around into the win column with a 5 p.m. road trip of their own into Whitesville on Wednesday.

Friendship 10, Fillmore 2
FILLMORE — Nevaeh Ross was simply unstoppable for the Lady Golden Eagles of Friendship, as one of Allegany County’s premier pitchers in softball provided her strongest outing yet, fanning a season-high 18 batters while holding host Fillmore to just two hits in all, as Friendship used their offense behind Ross to propel forward toward a 10-2 win on Monday.
“Obviously Nevaeh can chuck it, and it causes most batters fits,” Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley said. “Friendship found a way to make us pay for our five mistakes and it put the game out of reach for us. If we can be clean, maybe we can put some pressure on a team like that and have a chance. But we aren’t there yet. I thought Kirstin (Frazier) threw her best game of the season tonight as well, but now we get a well-earned practice day tomorrow to get ready for two big games starting on Wednesday and Thursday.”
Two was the lucky number for the Friendship (4-2) offense across the board, as they went straight to work on Fillmore with a 4-0 lead through the first four innings. The shutout ended after the Lady Golden Eagles scored two more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to six, as Fillmore scored one of their two runs in the bottom half.
The Lady Golden Eagles continued mounting the pressure while capitalizing on mistakes made by the Lady Eagles in the field, ultimately reaching a lead of nine in the top of the seventh to keep themselves distanced with the lead in tact. To go with her 18 strikeouts in the circle, Ross also collected three of the team’s nine hits, driving in two runs in the process. Claire Calhoun and Jadeyn Shields each had two hits to add in.
Fillmore (2-3) was led by Kirstin Frazier, who put together her best performance of the season on the rubber, fanning eight Friendship batters and walking one in her six-inning start. At the plate, Lizzy Nugent and Preslee Miller each recorded a double.
Friendship will return to action tonight with a doubleheader back on the road in Scio, as they visit the Lady Tigers in 5 and 7 p.m. contests, while Fillmore hits the road themselves to face Cuba-Rushford on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. first pitch of their own.

Alfred-Almond 18, Andover 5 (F-6)
ALMOND — The Lady Eagles of Alfred-Almond would help record a sweep of Andover on their home turf Monday night. With the baseball team taking a 14-5 decision not far from the softball field, the Lady Eagles followed suit with a win of their own — an 18-5 decision over the visiting Lady Panthers.
Stats and a complete box score were not made available upon publication.
Andover (1-6) will return to action back on the road tonight, as they visit their longtime rival Whitesville in a 5 p.m. meeting.
Genesee Valley 12, Whitesville 11
WHITESVILLE — Runs were being scored left and right in Whitesville on Monday. When it was all complete, 23 total runs between both the Lady Jaguars of Genesee Valley, and the host Lady Jays were scratched across. The last three runs of the day came from the visitors in green and black at the most clutch time.
After they trailed for the majority of the game, they would show a large amount of life to complete their rally from behind, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull ahead of Whitesville for good, and toward what was a 12-11 barnburning victory in their first game in over a week.
Both teams scored eight hits at the plate, but it was Whitesville (0-6) that had the game’s first answer after an early 1-1 deadlock with Genesee Valley, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third to garner their largest lead of the day of five runs, taking the 6-1 lead on the Lady Jaguars.
From that point forward for the Lady Jaguars (4-2), it was about finding a way to come back. They would do just that in the top of the fifth inning, gaining their first lead before Whitesville found a way to respond a short time later in the bottom half, scoring six massive runs to take a 7-6 lead. The lead would switch back over into the favor of the Lady Jays after their four-run fifth inning.
But it gave Genesee Valley all the energy they needed to finish out the game strong, scoring five of the last six runs combined to pull ahead one more time to secure the comeback win.
Sierra Burrows earned the win in the circle for the visitors, fanning six and walking three in her complete game. At the plate, Burrows had two hits, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Kayci Bigelow added in a hit and scored twice, while Tori Babbitt added in an RBI single.
Whitesville was led by Zoey Lee, who had three hits including a bases-clearing triple. Aislinn Hamilton added in a double, driving in two runs and scoring three of their own. In the circle, Olivia Waters fanned seven and walked six in her five-inning start.
Both teams will have quick turnaround back on the field tonight in 5 p.m. first pitches, as Genesee Valley heads back to welcome in Cuba-Rushford, while Whitesville renews their rivalry with Andover.

Wellsville 8, Bolivar-Richburg 6 (F-9)
BOLIVAR — Unlike their last meeting in Wellsville, the stakes were at a new high when Wellsville and Bolivar-Richburg met for the second and final time Monday night under the lights. After a quick beginning by the Lions, their lead was well established with their pitching keeping the Wolverines at bay.
But in the back half of the game, the tide began to turn, as Bolivar-Richburg rallied back with five enormous and unanswered runs to tie the game up at five going into extra innings. Two of those frames were required to decided a winner, and in the end, the Lions made sure it was them by scoring their last three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the season sweep of the Wolverines by an 8-6 count over the road, successfully rebounding after Saturday’s loss to Canandaigua.
“It was a great game, and both teams played sound baseball,” Wolverines coach Dustin Allen said. “We got down early, and instead of hanging our heads, we kept digging by tying the game and sending it to extras. Trey (Buchholz) came in and threw excellent, and kept them off-balanced. We got the big hits when we needed them, and you never like to lose but, we played much better tonight. Hopefully we can keep getting better and use it for tomorrow.”
Wellsville (6-3) started their nights off with five of their eight runs coming right in the top half of the first inning. Four Lions recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate with Brayden Delahunt and Logan Dunbar — the heart of the order, leading the way as Delahunt scored three total RBI off his two hits, including a double, while Dunbar had a triple and RBI inside his 2-for-3 outing.
The score would remain a five-run lead in favor of the Lions all the way until the final three innings of play, when the Wolverines (6-4) mounted a big comeback on the Lions by scoring the last five runs of regulation in a row, with Caden Allen forcing extras with his big RBI hit into the outfield, scoring Phil MacDonell.
With the game all even at five, it came down to a game of who would strike first. That team was the Lions in the top of the ninth, as they sealed the deal on their win with the last three runs they needed to pull ahead for good to take the season-sweeping victory. On the mound, it was Jere Havens that picked up the win in relief, fanning four and walking one for the Lions. Helping the cause on offense were Havens and Liam McKinley, each chipping in with two hits.
On the other side, the Wolverines were led by Buchholz, who delivered a phenomenal seven-inning relief appearance behind seven strikeouts and three walks. At the plate, he was one of four different Bolivar-Richburg hitters that scored two hits, along with Allen who forced extra innings with one of his two big hits. Logan Bess and Landon Danaher each had two hits along with an RBI, with Bess collecting a double along the way.
Wellsville will head back home on Wednesday, as they look to keep the momentum rolling with Elmira in town for a 5 p.m. visit, while Bolivar-Richburg hits the road for a quick turnaround tonight in Hinsdale at 5 p.m.

Friendship/Scio 6, Fillmore 3
SCIO — Cam Loucks was at the top of his game all game long for Friendship/Scio on the mound and at the plate, as he held Fillmore to just five hits as well as provided one of the big bats in the team’s massive third inning that allowed them to pull away toward victory, as the Golden Eagles edged out the Eagles with a 6-3 Senior Night win in Scio on Monday.
“This was a great win, and it’s always tough to beat a perennial quality, well-coached team like Fillmore,” said Friendship/Scio co-coach Kevin Mole. “Cam Loucks pitched really well. He had great command, so this was a great game to send him out on Senior Night. Tonight was our last regular season game in Scio, so it was a great moment for a player who has had a great career for us. Same with Cory (Bolzan), who helped close it out tonight."
Both teams fought through the first two innings scoreless with Fillmore finding their way onto the board first in the top of the third with a 1-0 lead. Then, the runs came for Friendship/Scio (6-2), as they scored all six of their runs in the bottom half of the frame to respond in a big way, with two massive bats from Loucks and Dekota Stewart leading the charge.
Loucks would record a pair of hits including a double, and score two RBI, while Stewart chipped in with a two-run double.
Fillmore (5-3) would go on to score runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the avalanche of runs in the third inning was too much to overcome in the end, as Loucks held the Eagles at bay for much of the game, handing out 14 chairs in all while walking two in his six-inning start. Bolzan wrapped up shop with two strikeouts of his own.
For the visitors, Graham Cahill recorded two of the team’s five hits, including a triple and double. On the mound, Aaron Buck fanned five and walked two in his relief appearance. The Eagles will hit the road once more with a quick turnaround today, as they visit Archbishop Walsh in a 5 p.m. battle.

Cuba-Rushford 16, Belfast 4
BELFAST — The Rebels and Bulldogs were neck and neck through the first two innings of play, Monday night, exchanging goose eggs one after another. But that came to an end with Cuba-Rushford striking gold with a pair of eight-run innings, beginning in the top of the third, as they established a lead on Belfast that they never looked back from, coasting toward a 16-4 road win under the lights.
Behind a 16-run, 11-hit effort on offense, the defense was powered by a solid three-inning start from Austin Pinney, as he held Belfast scoreless at the plate while the team capitalized on an eight-run third inning to start their game off on a hot note, striking out seven and walking three to pick up the eventual victory on the rubber.
Belfast (4-4) would score all four of their runs later on in the bottom of the fourth inning to respond to Cuba-Rushford, cutting their deficit in half. It would remain a four-run lead for the visitors in blue and maroon up until the sixth, when the Rebels got hot one more time to pull away with another eight-run frame at the plate that sealed the win for good.
Noah Seigel and Logan Lewis both had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Cuba-Rushford offense. On the other side, Matt Weaver and Owen Heaney each had two hits of their own, with Weaver scoring a run.
Cuba-Rushford will have a quick turnaround back home tonight with a 5 p.m. first pitch slated against Genesee Valley. As for Belfast, they will look to rebound back on their home field Wednesday night with perhaps their biggest game of the season — a 7 p.m. battle under the lights against Friendship/Scio.

Fillmore 214, Cuba-Rushford 236
RUSHFORD — In the first of their back-to-back meetings on Monday, the Eagles of Fillmore grabbed the upper hand at Allegheny Hills in Rushford, as they used strong rounds from both Hayden Rust and Dylan Valentine to propel their victory over Cuba-Rushford by a 214-236 count to remain unbeaten in Allegany County League play.
“It was a very competitive match,” said Eagles coach Tom Parks. “Cuba has been taking some good scores and we knew we would have to shoot some decent scores to come out on top. We definitely needed Hayden and Dylan to have their typical rounds, but it’s not a two-person team. Haley (Hall) and Shelby (Beardsley) both put together decent scores to help the outcome as well.”
Rust recorded the medaling round between the two foes, firing a match-low round of 42 to lead Fillmore (4-2). Valentine was following closely behind with his round of 43. Haley Hall added in a 60, while Shelby Beardsley rounded off with a round of 63.
The Rebels (4-3) were led by Ethan Rix, and his team-low round of 49. Benson McCumiskey and Zack Eddy both pitched in with rounds of 62, while Hunter Williams had a 63 to card.
Both teams will reconvene back at Allegheny Hills today with a 4 p.m. tee time.
