BREAKING: Belfast, Genesee Valley set to merge athletics beginning next school year; all sports but Boys Basketball will be effected

***OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE OBTAINED FROM GVCS***

BELMONT/BELFAST — The Genesee Valley and Belfast Boards of Education have recently committed to move forward with the combining of athletic programs beginning in the 2021-2022 school year.

After long, meaningful discussions between both Boards of Education and the Athletic Merger Committee, it was determined to be the most beneficial decision for our student athletes now, and for years to come. After careful review of participation in both districts, the merging of athletic teams will include all sports except for the Boys Basketball programs.

The main goals of combining programs at this time include:

  1. Allow more opportunities for student athletes to participate at an appropriate skill and grade level throughout their athletic career whether on a Varsity, Junior Varsity or Modified team.

  2. Address programs with low participation in both schools.

  3. Proactively prepare for reduced participants due to lower enrollment at various grade levels.

  4. Maintain all current Genesee Valley and Belfast programs.

  5. Combining programs now prevents us from having to drop programs in the future.

Both districts will now begin working on critical steps of selecting coaches, merging various policies and organizing summer camps to help students from both schools get to know each other and try new activities.
