Tuesday Roundup: Cowburn homers, Ordway tosses gem to propel Lady Lions toward 10-4 road win at Hammondsport; Lady Jays walk off to clinch 1st win of season

HAMMONDSPORT — The first inning of play was all the Lady Lions of Wellsville needed to make an impact on Tuesday when they returned to action. Out of the 10 runs on the board, the visitors in orange and black pounded the bats once more with six runs coming off four hits to fuel what became a 10-4 win against the host Lady Lakers of Hammondsport.

Inside the team’s six-run first inning, the Lady Lions (15-1) were able to find their groove at the plate with Brazen Beckwith leading the charge with her two-run double to give the team the lead out of the gates. Although the lead was cut down to three after the Lady Lakers posted a three-run third inning, the deficit quickly grew for the hosts in the last innings of play when Wellsville garnered some more help on offense.

After taking an 8-4 lead on Hammondsport, the lead became insurmountable in the top of the sixth with thanks from Makenzie Cowburn, and her big two-run blast to wrap up what was a perfect 4-for-4 evening on offense. In all, the Lady Lions would total 14 hits with Mallory Sibble adding in two hits of her own, while Emma Dunaway provided one in the form of a double.

In the circle, Marissa Ordway kept the Lady Lakers off balance for much of the evening, striking out 10 batters in all to collect the five-hit victory.

Wellsville comes back home to Tullar Field on Thursday with a 7 p.m. meeting under the lights slated against the Lady Gators of Allegany-Limestone, as they look to complete the season sweep.

Bolivar-Richburg 10, Avoca/Prattsburgh 3

AVOCA — It was a battle that Bolivar-Richburg had to fight back from to start the day Tuesday, with Avoca/Prattsburgh kicking off the festivities with an early first inning lead. But it would not last long, as the bats for the Lady Wolverines began to click in the middle innings with Malayna Ayers breaking open the game with her massive hit to extend their lead for good, eventually rolling toward a 10-3 road win over the host Lady Vikings.

The Lady Wolverines (9-2) would find a way ahead of the Lady Vikings after a 2-1 deficit was made up in the top of the fourth, collecting a two-run frame behind their baserunning to take the lead. In the next frame, Ayers opened the floodgates with the bases jammed, finding the outfield with her bases-clearing triple inside the team’s six-run fifth inning to assist in rolling out of the reach of Avoca/Prattsburgh for good.

Bolivar-Richburg’s Jessica Majot and Avoca/Prattsburgh’s Annabelle Putnam were engaged in a pitcher’s duel for much of the game, with both garnering over 10 strikeouts, but it was Majot that managed to outduel her opposition, collecting 11 strikeouts and walking two in her complete game six-hit victory for the Lady Wolverines.

On offense, McKinlee and Madigan Harris led the bats with a pair of hits, while Jianna Nix added in a triple.

The Lady Wolverines are back in action tonight back over the road, visiting the Lady Panthers of Andover in a 6 p.m. contest.

Cuba-Rushford 10, Genesee Valley 4

BELMONT — In light of their walk-off victory back home against Belfast on Monday, the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford found themselves entering Tuesday night’s quick turnaround with a Mack Truck load of momentum heading into Genesee Valley on Tuesday.

Cuba-Rushford would start the game red hot with the first six runs, establishing a lead that the team would never lose with three of those runs coming out of the gates in the first inning, as they went on to score their third straight victory behind a 10-4 triumph over the host Lady Jaguars.

“What a great game from the girls tonight,” Lady Rebels coach Diana Joseph said. “The girls came out positive and ready to roll. They worked really hard, and their hitting was on point. The defense was ready for everything we saw in front of them too. We are really starting to find our rhythm, and I am just glad the girls are really enjoying this season.”

The Lady Rebels (4-6) collected 10 runs off seven total hits on offense while Sydney Howard held down the fort with one of her best performances of the season, as she struck out 13 total Lady Jaguars hitters and walked two in her twirled five-hit victory. Although a big six-run lead was built by the visitors in gray and blue, it was cut down in the bottom of the fourth through the next three innings by Genesee Valley, as they scored the next four runs in a row to cut their deficit to a pair, led by a Sierra Burrows two-run double.

But the Cuba-Rushford defense held their ground and kept the Lady Jaguars at bay for the rest of the game with the last four runs, two in each the sixth and seventh innings to pull away permanently.

Howard and Riley Keller led the bats for the visitors with a pair of hits, with Howard driving in a pair. On the other side, Burrows struck out eight and walked four in her complete game performance for the Lady Jaguars, who hit the road to take on the Fillmore Lady Eagles in a 5 p.m. contest on Thursday.

Cuba-Rushford will get their crack at Fillmore first back home tonight, as they aim for their fourth straight win with the Lady Eagles in for a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

Whitesville 8, Andover 7 (F-8)

WHITESVILLE — For the second straight night, Allegany County saw a walk-off victory come about in extra innings. After Cuba-Rushford clinched theirs 24 hours prior at home against Belfast, it was Whitesville that followed up with one of their own for their first victory of the season, as Olivia Waters blasted a walk-off single to win it for the Lady Blue Jays by an 8-7 count over visiting Andover, Tuesday night.

“It was a great game, and I’m happy for the way my girls hung in there and got the win. It was good to see them get so excited for their first win,” Lady Jays coach Tammy Ellison said.

The Lady Jays (1-6) had to fight their way from behind most of the day, after Andover found the upper hand through the first two innings with a 5-0 lead, scoring four massive runs in the top of the second to bring their lead to fruition. But Whitesville would find their way onto the board a short time later with Rachel Jackson blasting a solo home run in the third to bring the team within four.

The momentum continued in the next inning as the deficit was cut down to three with Zoey Lee blasting a solo home run of her own inside her 3-for-4 outing at the plate, totaling three RBI and two runs scored. After Andover (1-7) extended their lead back out to 7-3, Whitesville brought it all together to tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth with four massive runs, ultimately forcing just an extra session.

In that eighth inning, the Lady Jays wrapped up their comeback with Waters’ walk-off single to the outfield, plating Kennedy Bledsoe to hand the team their first win of the season.

Lee earned the team’s victory from within the circle, as she struck out six and walked two in her relief appearance beginning back in the third inning. Helping the cause in addition on offense was Serina Button, who chipped in with a double. On the other side, the Lady Panthers were led by Ava Grice, Kelsie Niedermaier and Gabby Terhune, who all recorded two hits respectively. On the mound, Makaila Brewster fanned six and walked six in her start.

Both teams will have quick turnaround back on their home fields tonight, with the Lady Jays hosting doubleheader action with Scio beginning with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch, while Andover heads back home to host the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg in a 6 p.m. first pitch of their own.

Of those 23 runs, 14 of them were scored in the final inning of play for the Lady Golden Eagles (5-2), as Ross led the bats with a perfect 3-for-3 outing, scoring four runs along the way. Katherine Lamberson added in two hits of her own, and also scored four times. In the circle, Ross held Scio to just one hit on offense while handing out 10 chairs in all to collect her twirled gem.

Cuba-Rushford 15, Genesee Valley 1 (F-5)

CUBA — The Rebels of Cuba-Rushford were at complete and total command of their game back home on Tuesday, as they accounted for at least a pair of runs in all four innings of action while Jon White held down the defense on the hill in their 15-1 victory over visiting Genesee Valley to record their fourth win in the last five games.

The Jaguars started the game with a lead-off single from Trent Scott, their lone hit of the contest which would work towards an early 1-0 lead of the Rebels (7-3). From that point on, Cuba-Rushford took over with 15 straight runs, responding with four in the bottom half of the opening frame to take the lead away for good.

The hosts would find their rhythm later on in the bottom of the third with their biggest frame of the day, scoring six runs to crack double digits to put toward a shortened victory.

White struck out eight Jaguars batters in his complete game one-hit gem for the Rebels. At the plate, Noah Seigel went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Trent Chamberlain and Cameron Dunlap each chipped in with three hits, with Dunlap tallying a double and three RBI, while Chamberlain scored four runs.

Bolivar-Richburg 11, Hinsdale 1 (F-6)

HINSDALE — After a 1-1 tie with the Bobcats of Hinsdale through the first inning, a pitching change was made on the mound for Bolivar-Richburg. From the second inning onward, it was Caden Allen’s game to command. At the end of it, it was one that he provided a stunning display of pitching in, as he struck out 13 batters to pick up the victory for the Wolverines in their 11-1 six-inning triumph over the road, Tuesday night.

Although the Wolverines (7-4) broke loose and away from Hinsdale, the baserunning was the key to their success on offense, as they capitalized on multiple Hinsdale errors to net their runs. The team would gather just two hits at the plate in all, with Logan Bess and Matt Mitchell providing them off singles, scoring two runs each along the way to help further the cause.

Bolivar-Richburg pulled out on top in the upper half of the second inning with a pair of runs coming in to score to earn a 3-1 lead, which was branched to six after their biggest inning came in the third behind four more runs, ultimately using it to pull away for good.

Hinsdale (1-6) was led by Tucker Schwartz and Xavier Pascucci, who recorded a hit each to round off the offense with singles — the two lone hits for the Bobcats. On the mound, Pascucci fanned three and walked three in his relief appearance.
