Thursday Roundup: Dunbar’s superb start, clutch offense helps Lions produce home-opening win over Olean; B-R’s Allen outduels C-R’s Sleggs in 4-1 Wolverines triumph
WELLSVILLE — With their Spring Break trip down to Myrtle Beach seeing him provide two outstanding performances against some elite competition like no other, it gave Logan Dunbar an opportunity to continue making some noise in his senior season.
The next adventure of this season saw the Lions journey their way back north to home, where a date with Olean now waited in the wings for their home opener on Thursday. A perfect opportunity for Dunbar to claim victory.
The task at hand against a quality Section VI opponent was not easy by any means, but once the engine started going, there was no slowing it down.
In their home opener against Olean, the Lions senior was outstanding on the mound keeping the visiting Huskies of Olean on their feet, handing out 10 chairs and walking five while the offense soon followed right behind him, as the team scored at least a run across every inning to pull away towards an 11-7 win.
“It's nice to get the first win in the home opener back home here against a good Olean team that we should be proud of,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “Logan got a win tonight, because he pitched twice down in Myrtle beach and unfortunately came away with two losses down there. It's nice to see him continue to pitch well and get rewarded with this win.”
The momentum began to build in the first two innings of play on both sides of the field for the Lions (3-2), with Dunbar starting it off with a full head of steam by accumulating six strikeouts to keep the Huskies on their feet right away. In turn, the Lions fed off the early resilience by coming together at the plate.
While Olean attempted to keep the Lions on their feet themselves, forcing them to their final out of the inning on some occasions, Wellsville would not let the opportunity of breaking the ice slip away, as Ty Vogel and Trenton Green both connected with solid two-out strikes to keep the engine going, reaching base.
As a result, Dunbar was able to cash in on an early 1-0 lead on a shallow pop out into the outfield that was lost in the sun for the Olean defense. In the next inning, Aidan Riley and Cody Costello recorded another pair of two-out connections to reach base, allowing Cooper Brockway to crack the ice even further with a two-out drive into left, scoring both to branch the lead to three.
“The bats were on fire tonight. What's impressive is not only we had 14 hits, we strung them together and we put runs on the board in every single inning,” Delahunt said. “In the second inning, we got two quick outs and then had three hits in a row before Cooper drove in a pair with his. The same thing happened in the fifth, two quick strikeouts and then Cody drove in two with his as well. That's huge when you can score with two outs.”
Although the wheels started to churn for the hosts in orange, Olean soon found their way onto the board themselves, scoring back-to-back runs on shots by Chase Vogtli down the left field line, and by Thomas Bates to the deep right field fence, cutting the deficit down to one before Bates scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at three in the third.
Just as the Huskies created level playing ground, Wellsville provided an imbalance again immediately following with their second of five consecutive two-run frames, using special teams to score both runs from third off wild pitches.
A three-run lead, soon to be four, was regained in the fourth after the defense held the Huskies strong in the top half, with Vogel’s shallow poke into right field with runners on second and third scored Riley before Costello came in moments later on another ball to the backstop.
Perhaps the biggest chance for the Huskies to break things open on the Lions came in the fifth inning, as they loaded up the bases behind Dunbar on the rubber. Olean was able to connect with one run off a fielder’s choice to the left side, but with their back up against the wall, Wellsville was able to alleviate some of that pressure by finding their way off the field, leaving both runners on.
In turn, the Lions used the fifth inning escape as firepower for the bottom half, as Costello recorded his second two-out drive of the game, this time on a laser beam straight up the middle, garnering enough distance to bring both runners on base, Riley and Aiden Cowburn, home for a 9-4 lead on the Huskies.
In the sixth and seventh innings, the hosts would use it to provide two more final pieces of insurance before the defense was able to find their way off one last time in a bases-loaded situation behind Gavin Haggerty in the seventh, securing the home-opening win.
“It was very important for us to allow Gavin to finish the game tonight. One of the reasons why is because our bats were hot and we had a lead, Delahunt said. “The hitting is nice, the scoring and when you can score like that, it will help us a lot going into our next game. We're sitting pretty good with our pitchers that we want to use going forward.”
Dunbar put a bow on his first win of the season for the Lions with 10 strikeouts and five walks, holding Olean to just four hits before coming off the mound in his five-inning start. The senior was also the team’s leading hitter, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Riley followed behind him with a perfect 3-for-3 outing, scoring three times, while Costello, Brockway, Vogel and Green all had two hits each.
Wellsville will look to keep the home-opening momentum rolling onto the bus this evening, as they prepare to head up towards the Finger Lakes for a 5 p.m. showdown with Canandaigua.
“It's a great game for us, because they're a Class A school. We've gone back and forth with them the past couple of years. I'm looking forward to the challenge it brings tomorrow night.” said Delahunt.

Bolivar-Richburg 4, Cuba-Rushford 1
BOLIVAR — Eli Sleggs and Caden Allen both went the extra mile for their respective teams on Thursday. The Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg aces were at the top of their game when the two rivals came together for their first clash of the season in Bolivar, holding their respective brigades in check for much of the battle.
But for Allen, the game was under his command, as he held the Rebels scoreless all the way until their final at-bats at the plate, surrendering only one run in his twirled two-hit complete game for the Wolverines, as the offense capitalized with massive strikes on special teams to record the game’s first lead and hold it permanently until the end, clinging to a 4-1 win in their home opener back home from South Carolina.
“Both pitchers threw really well. For the most part, there was solid defense behind them, but we were able to get out of the jams and squeeze out a great win against Cuba,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “Getting that one run in the second, that was big and then in the fifth. Caden was still in control, and we were able to hold it down from there. We’ll have our hands full with Hornell tomorrow, but we’ll be ready to go at them.”
Both teams traded scoreless barbs in the game’s beginning stages, exchanging quick innings before a key special teams connection allowed Bolivar-Richburg (2-2) to reach the board first. With Landon Barkley reaching base, he made his way around into scoring position to set up James Margeson’s at-bat, where he skied one out to the outfield far enough for Barkley to make a break towards home with the first run of the game, and the lead in the second.
More defensive battling resumed on the field for the next couple of innings between the two teams before the Wolverines created another opening in the Cuba-Rushford (1-2) defense again in the fifth, as David Baldwin unleashed a laser straight up the middle off Eli Sleggs to bring in Margeson on the play, extending their advantage to a pair.
The momentum was maintained in the sixth during the team’s final at-bats, as they plated two more big pieces of insurance to secure their victory even further, led by an RBI single off the bat of Aydin Sisson.
The Rebels ultimately found their way onto the board for the first time in their final tenure at the plate, connecting with a fielder’s choice in the infield with a run standing in scoring position. That would be the only opportunity Cuba-Rushford got to cash in, as Allen resumed his control on the hill and finished a brilliant service of pitching for the complete game two-hit victory.
Allen totaled seven strikeouts and three walks. On the other side, Sleggs provided just as outstanding an effort for the Rebels, fanning nine Bolivar-Richburg batters and walking just two in his twirled three-hitter. At the plate for the visitors in blue, Jacob Smith and Sam Grover each had a hit.
Up next, the Wolverines will hit the road for a massive 5 p.m. showdown with the Hornell Red Raiders at Maple City Park this evening, while Cuba-Rushford heads back home to host their home opener against Friendship/Scio, Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

Fillmore 16, Genesee Valley/Belfast 0 (F-5)
FILLMORE — One day removed from a combined four-hit performance against Cuba-Rushford, the Eagles of Fillmore took it one step further back on their home field on Thursday. With Genesee Valley/Belfast in town, the ball belonged to Damon Potter, where he was simply intangible on the hill, scoring a no-hit performance by handing out 14 chairs to propel the defending Class D1 champions towards a 16-0 win in five innings.
While Potter was holding down the fort for the Eagles (2-0) on the field, the offense soon followed right behind them by accounting for 16 runs off 12 total hits. Three different hitters recorded at least a pair of hits, including a massive floodgate-cracking slug from Nolan Krzeminski in the bottom of the second frame.
After taking an early 1-0 lead, the team in green added to their lead with a three-run spurt paced by a solid two-run double to the outfield from Krzeminski - one of three team-leading hits he would have to propel the offense. The damage would soon be done in the bottom of the third, as Fillmore broke down the door with a humongous 10-run stint, headlined by a bases-clearing triple to the deep outfield off the bat of Luke Colombo.
Brent Zubikowski finished off the scoring one final time with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Mitch Ward and Jude Beardsley also had two hits each, with Beardsley recording a double to round off the team’s outstanding offensive outburst.
For Genesee Valley/Belfast (0-3), Carter Stout struck out three and walked two in his start on the hill. Thai Norasethaporn added two more strikeouts and three walks in relief.
Both teams are back on the field Saturday on the road, with the Eagles paying a 10 a.m. visit to Hinsdale, while Genesee Valley/Belfast heads out to face Canisteo-Greenwood in a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Andover/Whitesville 20, Hinsdale 2 (F-5)
HINSDALE — Andover/Whitesville and Hinsdale remained within reach of one another to begin the night on Thursday. But then, the action began to heat up a short time later. With a 2-1 lead in hand, the visitors in blue began to find their rhythm at the plate, scoring six runs in each of the last three innings of play to ultimately force the 10-run rule against the Bobcats in what was a 20-2 rebound victory.
Andover/Whitesville (1-1) picked up their first win of the season by using a combination of offense and special teams to fuel the scoring, as they collected eight hits at the plate. Layton Miller had two of those hits — a two-run single during his second at-bat in the third and later, a two-run double in the fifth, totaling four RBI all together to fuel the attack at the plate. Brody Carlin also came up with a pair of hits.
Carlin was also the team’s winning pitcher on the mound, going into the fifth inning with five strikeouts and eight walks, combining with Landon Cook, who scored the final out of the fifth with a strikeout to successfully hold Hinsdale (1-1) hitless at the plate.
For the Bobcats, Henry Schwartz struck out four and walked eight in his three-inning start on the rubber. The Bobcats will now host Fillmore on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
Andover/Whitesville’s road swing continues onward after the weekend, as they pay a visit to Cuba-Rushford on Monday in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

SOFTBALL
Bolivar-Richburg 15, Cuba-Rushford 0 (F-6)
RICHBURG — The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg nearly accounted for at least a run in every single inning of their home opener on Thursday, as they started red hot out of the gate with an 11-0 lead and never looked back against visiting Cuba-Rushford, strolling their way towards no-hit victory over the Lady Rebels by a 15-0 count after six innings of play.
The Lady Wolverines (2-0) made their presence known almost immediately during their first at-bats, as they nearly blew through their entire lineup in one go after scoring a 4-0 early lead propelled by Rylee Whiting’s first career home run — a two-run blast from within a three-hit evening for the first year Varsity infielder.
Whiting was one of five different Bolivar-Richburg hitters to record at least a pair of hits to ignite a 17-hit offense against Cuba-Rushford (2-1), as the team continued adding building blocks with a four-run second and three-run third to eclipse double figure, ultimately working their way towards the 15-0 win after six innings in the penultimate bottom half.
Joining Whiting was Jayna Thomas, who went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. McKinlee Harris contributed three hits including a double, and also drove in a pair of runs, while Haley Mascho and Madigan Harris each had two hits. On the mound, the win belonged to Mascho in her first start of the season, holding the Lady Rebels hitless across 10 strikeouts.
For the visitors in gray and blue, Sydney Howard struck out three during her tenure of relief inside the circle. The Lady Rebels will now get set to host Friendship/Scio, Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in their home opener.
Bolivar-Richburg will be up next to take on Friendship/Scio, as the two Section V champions meet in Richburg after the weekend in an early Allegany County showdown, beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 12, Fillmore 2
FILLMORE — After falling to a no-hit effort by the hands of Bolivar-Richburg back on Tuesday, Genesee Valley/Belfast was poised for a bounce back performance on the road for the first time this season, Thursday night.
Up against Fillmore, who now enters their third battle out of four straight to open their season, the fight was on. Fortunately enough, Hannah Southwick-Powers came ready to deliver, as the sophomore held the Lady Eagles in check while handing out 11 total chairs to keep them off balance from start to finish, recording a massive 12-2 victory to grab their first win.
Southwick-Powers was sublime across the first four innings of play for Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-1), keeping Fillmore off the board while the offense fed off the momentum they provided, which began with three runs right in the top of the first inning. Little by little, they kept chipping away with even more, scoring seven more unanswered runs to branch their lead into double digit territory.
It would not be until the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Eagles (1-2) found their way onto the board for the first time. Their last would come with one final run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Genesee Valley/Belfast remained vigilant to deliver an outstanding bounce back victory over the road.
Southwick-Powers, along with Jenna Hill, each paved the way for the offense of the visitors, scoring a pair of hits and three RBI each. Danika Scott tallied a double, and drove in two more runs herself to help complete a seven-hit attack for Genesee Valley/Belfast.
For Fillmore, Preslee Miller recorded a double, while Grace Russell garnered a hit and scored both of the team’s runs. In the circle, Mylee Miller struck out five and walked six during her three innings of relief.
Both teams will have Canisteo-Greenwood up next on their schedule, with Fillmore playing host to the Lady Redskins tonight to wrap up four straight nights of battle with a 7 p.m. first pitch under the lights. The following day, Genesee Valley/Belfast will have their crack at the Lady Redskins over the road in a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.

GOLF
Genesee Valley/Belfast 232, Hinsdale 285
FRANKLINVILLE — Although Caden Miller was able to come away as the medalist for Hinsdale’s home battle with Genesee Valley/Belfast, it was the balance of the visitors on the scorecard that made all the difference on Thursday, as they strolled their way towards victory by a 232-285 count to grab their first win on the links this season at Ischua Valley Golf Club.
Firing Genesee Valley/Belfast’s best round was Chris Weaver, as he recorded a team-low round of 53. Will Guilford chipped in with a 58. Colden Caiazza fired for a round of 60, while Dakota Hemphill and Justin Hill each carded a 61.
On the other side, Miller was ultimately the match’s leader at the end of the day, firing the medalist round of 45 to pace the Bobcats (0-1). Brett Bergstrom provided a 69, while Brian Bergstrom had a 91. Hinsdale will look to regroup on Tuesday back in Franklinville, hosting Cuba-Rushford at 4 p.m.
Genesee Valley/Belfast will now head for the Wellsville Country Club on Monday, as they prepare to face the host Lions in a 4 p.m. tee time.
BOYS TENNIS
Fillmore 4, Wellsville 1
WELLSVILLE — In a battle of two local tennis elites, Fillmore and Wellsville fought tooth and nail across all five matches put on display. But after a hard-fought win by Eben Schilke to go with a complete sweep of both doubles matches, the Eagles were able to get the job done for their first win, as they strolled towards victory by a 4-1 count over the Lions on Thursday.
Schilke nearly went the distance alongside Wellsville’s Hua Qui Zhang at first singles for the Eagles (1-0), as the two counterparts exchanged point after point, set after set until Schilke was able to do just enough in the end to capture a close 6-4, 6-4 decision over Zhang. To help go with the massive singles win, Fillmore also collected a big pair of wins in both doubles matches.
Capturing those triumphant performances was the first doubles team of Joe Derck and Jack Boon, along with the second doubles duo of Henry Decker and Ezra Knapp, as the former fought towards a 6-2, 6-4 win over Shane Davidson and Jayden Acker, while the latter cruised through a first set win to help claim a 6-1, 6-3 win over Joel Janssen and Jeremiah Pensyl.
Fillmore added one more win at third singles, and it was perhaps the most hard-fought of them all. He, along with Adam Iantorno, went stride for stride with one another, each collecting a set to force a decisive third set. In it, it was forced into an extra session where the Eagles were able to find that two-point cushion they needed to secure the win for Wolfer by a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 count.
Wellsville’s (1-3) lone win came from Gavan Dickerson at second singles, marching his way forward before edging his path towards victory by a 6-2, 6-4 count over Fillmore’s Isaiah Sisson. The Lions are back on the court on Monday with a 5 p.m. visit to Alfred-Almond.
The Eagles will look to keep the ball rolling into Monday themselves, heading back home to host Houghton Academy on the grounds of Houghton University.

Fillmore boys, B-R girls highlight tri-meet in Bolivar
BOLIVAR — A plethora of secondary finishes for the Fillmore boys squad, along with seven first place wins for the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines were the headlining acts from Thursday’s tri-meet alongside Friendship/Scio, as the two foes carved their way towards victory for the first time this season with the top score within their respective divisions.
The Fillmore boys team was the ultimate victor at the end of the night in Bolivar, as they compiled six first place finishes to pair alongside a monstrous plethora of secondary finishes to lay claim on a 66-point first place overall finish ahead of Friendship/Scio and the host Wolverines. Leading the way was Brian Ashton, who used his throwing expertise to deliver a sweep of both events from the field, garnering winning distances of the shot put and discus.
Ernie Lipscomb and Eli Strickland on the track, gave the Eagles another sweep, this time of the distance running events, as Lipscomb took charge of a first place victory in the 1600 run, while Strickland followed up with a 3200 run himself. Fillmore also collected a pair of relay victories along the way, crossing the finish line first in the 400 and 3200 relays.
Friendship/Scio was able to garner a second place finish behind 45 points total. Among the team’s seven total first place wins, Jordan White had four of them to record — two of them on each side of the meet, with his first two coming in the 100 and 200 dash before adding more fuel to the fire with wins in the high jump and long jump. James Scranton also had a pair of wins for the team, posting winning times in the 400 and 800 runs.
Rounding off the wins was Max Morris, who tallied a winning distance from the sand bunker, in the triple jump.
The host Wolverines scored just two first place finishes from one performer at the end of the day, as Hunter Walp recorded both wins in the 110 and 400 hurdles.
On the girls side, the Lady Wolverines produced seven total wins to put towards a narrow 51-point effort — three more than second place Fillmore, who remained within distance of the defending Section V champions, as Carmen Crowley led the team with a pair of wins — medaling in the 400 run before taking her talents to the field with a big win in the triple jump. Crowley also ran a leg in the team’s winning 1600 relay team (5:04.7).
Other individual medalists include: Raegan Giardini (800 run), Kori Thomas (400 hurdles), Joey Danaher (high jump) and Nadia Baldwin (long jump).
Following behind were the Lady Eagles of Fillmore, but not by much, as they recorded 48 points to wrap up the meet in second place. The team was able to scavenge four victories during the course of the meet, with Rachel Hatch paving the way with two each, both coming off wins in the 100 hurdles and shot put.
Sophia Pastorius would provide a sweep of both throwing events herself, as she garnered the winning distance on the discus. Ava Sylvester rounded off the wins with a win from their 400 relay team.
Friendship/Scio would follow behind in last place having scored just two victories, both from Lexi Crossley, with her first coming in the 100 dash before adding another one to her showcase later on with a triumphant performance in the 200 dash.
