Monday Roundup: O’Dell scores lone goal to help Wellsville shut down visiting C-G in 1-0 blank; Dyche, Demick help C-R provide 2-0 shutout over And/Whi

WELLSVILLE — The 5-1 defeat to the hands of the Fillmore Lady Eagles was one that the Lady Lions of Wellsville were looking to shake off when the time to get back on their home turf came on Monday. The opportunity came when Canisteo-Greenwood came to town for a visit.

For the most part, both squads battled the midfield for much of the evening. But when it came down to it, it was the first strike that would wind up making all the difference. That belonged to Vena O’Dell, who wasted no time getting Wellsville on the board with the lead that they never lost to the Lady Redskins, as they used the second half to tighten up their defense to successfully bounce back with a 1-0 shutout.

In the first 10 minutes of play, O’Dell got the Lady Lions (4-6) on the board with what wound up being the game’s lone goal, as she tucked the ball into the Canisteo-Greenwood net on a chip shot from the back off the leg of Makenzie Cowburn at the 29:41 mark to put a big crack into the ice.

The goal was one of 11 total shots Wellsville applied to the Lady Redskins cage, as they outshot their opposition by an 11-6 count. In goal, Makenna Dunbar made all six stops to preserve the rebounding shutout for the hosts in black and orange.

The Lady Lions will look to keep their winning ways going back on the road Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. first kick in Belmont, visiting host Genesee Valley/Belfast in the Jungle.

Cuba-Rushford 2, Andover/Whitesville 0

ANDOVER — The last time both Cuba-Rushford and Andover/Whitesville got to together, a 2-0 lead by the Lady Rebels was mounted in the first half. It was a lead that they held for much of the game, but was lost later on after Andover/Whitesville scored three straight to complete a comeback finish in Cuba last week.

In Andover, nearly the same scenario developed for Cuba-Rushford, as they recorded a 2-0 lead. But this time, they made sure it stuck.

One goal was recorded in each half for the visitors in white and blue, and the goals came from a pair of Lady Rebels who recorded their first goal of the season, as Rachel Dyche and Macie Demick provided the goals that allowed them to remain in the driver’s seat across all 80 minutes, shutting out Andover/Whitesville over the road by a 2-0 count on Monday.

“Our effort was there again tonight, but we couldn’t string three passes together,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Al Barber. “We were really dominated in the middle of the field, and both goals were the result of simply poor marking. We need to be better balanced to have any success moving forward. Our League is tough this year, and the poor shape and bad touch bites you in the behind night after night.”

The Lady Rebels (6-4) capitalized just past the midway mark of the first half to gain the 1-0 edge at halftime over Andover/Whitesville, as Dyche provided the team’s first goal off a pass from the back dished along by Fran Childs. It was a lead they continued to hold, while the defense did a stand-up job keeping Andover/Whitesville out of the net, especially in the second half.

In the last 40 minutes, they gained a reward for their efforts on defense, picking up a massive piece of insurance near the midway mark of the period from Demick and her first tally of the season that she collected from midfield and dribbled in on goal for the score, putting the game away for good.

Both teams recorded 10 shots on offense, but Tara Duvall made all the stops necessary to preserve the shutout in goal for the Lady Rebels. On the other side, Brynn Scholl made eight saves for Andover/Whitesville.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night in a pair of road contests, with Cuba-Rushford heading out for a 7 p.m. visit to the red hot unbeaten Lady Eagles of Fillmore, while Andover/Whitesville looks to turn the ship back around with a 5 p.m. first kick at Bolivar-Richburg.

Friendship/Scio 2, Hammondsport 2

HAMMONDSPORT — For the first time this season, Friendship/Scio, despite starting hot in the first half, found their way into the tie column over the road on Monday, as they battled with host Hammondsport all the way to the end in a 2-2 deadlock after 100 minutes.

Lexi Crossley scored both goals for Friendship/Scio (3-6-1) coming the first half of play to earn the 2-0 lead over Hammondsport, with her second coming off a penalty kick.

The Lady Lakers would climb their way back into the game by cutting the deficit in half right before the break, and then force overtime off a penalty kick of their own in the last 40 minute session, ultimately resulting in Friendship/Scio’s first tie of the season.

Friendship/Scio will return to their home field Thursday night in Friendship for a 5 p.m. first kick against Bolivar-Richburg.
