*STORY BY JOHN ANDERSON/WELLSVILLE SUN*
WELLSVILLE — There was a lot of emotion in the Wellsville volleyball gym at the elementary school on Wednesday night as the Lions honored four seniors before a league matchup with Fillmore.
There was a large student section and the athletic Eagles from Fillmore jumped out to an early first set lead.
However, the Lions battled back to take a close Game 1, 25-21 and went on to a 3-1 victory. The scores were 25-21, 25-7, 14-25, 26-24.

Arkport/Canaseraga 3, Scio 2
SCIO — The Scio Tigers were were pushed all the way to the brink after two dominant sets delivered by Arkport/Canaseraga started their Wednesday night battle.
But the Tigers ate the pressure up and bounced back in a big way, earning two enormous victories of their own, both in extended serves to force a fifth and final set. In that last frame, the Wolves would find a way to shake it off however, as they pulled away from Scio’s grasp over the road and came up large with their 10th win in 11 games in a 25-13, 25-14, 24-26, 25-27, 15-8 decision over the hosts.
The Tigers (3-6), despite the loss, saw Jude Marion rise to the occasion to lead their offense, compiling six service points to go with a team-high five kills. Helping further the cause was Max Morris, who also tallied six service points, coupling them with three kills, three blocks and an ace.
Scio is back on their home floor with a 6 p.m. first serve slated against Fillmore.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Fillmore 60, Cuba-Rushford 30
FILLMORE — It was a pretty quiet first half that saw the Eagles of Fillmore spring out towards the lead over visiting Cuba-Rushford on Wednesday inside The Rock.
With a seven-point advantage in hand, the chance to build on it came in the third. For the Eagles, it was perhaps their strongest quarter not only for the night, but perhaps the entire season, as they rolled under Will Roeske’s guidance down low to put together a massive run of the Rebels, seeing their lead grow insurmountably until the end to come away with a 60-30 victory.
“I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get off to a faster start, and challenged the guys to bring more effort after halftime,” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch. “The third quarter was probably our best eight minutes of basketball, all season. It was a complete team effort on both ends, and our defense is really solid. It generates a lot of offense, but we are finally finding a rhythm in the half-court. That’s the next piece that we’ve been working on, and it was fun to watch the practice start to pay off.”
The 25-18 lead held by Fillmore (7-3) going into the second half was ignited by a balanced attack on both sides, with multiple scorers getting involved along the way. In the third quarter, the hosts in white and green found a way to create some fireworks with a huge 21-4 run of the Rebels, led by Will Roeske underneath the basket, as well as a host of Eagles finding the basket along the way.
In turn, the Eagles defense held Cuba-Rushford (4-5) to just two baskets worth of offense during the eight-minute span that saw their seven-point lead grow to 20, ultimately allowing them to pull away toward victory.
Roeske would finish with a game-high 19 points for the hosts. Mitch Ward added in 11 points of his own, six of those points coming from within the team’s third quarter. Zach Sisson added in nine more points.
For the Rebels, Jack Frank and Jacob Smith each recorded 10 points to pace the attack.
Both teams are back in action on Friday, as Fillmore remains pat at home with a meeting against Friendship/Scio beginning in a 6 p.m. tip-off, while Cuba-Rushford heads back to the Wighthouse aiming for a turnaround against Houghton Academy at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Genesee Valley/Belfast 54, Cuba-Rushford 42
CUBA — Right out of the gate, the Lady JagDogs of Genesee Valley/Belfast got hot. In over half of the first quarter’s time, the offense fueled a big run that gave them a double-digit cushion to control.
They would do just that, building on it by outscoring host Cuba-Rushford in the first three quarters to remain one large footstep ahead. The Lady Rebels would find away to chip at their deficit with their largest stand of offense in the evening coming in the last eight minutes, but it would be too much to overcome in the end, as Genesee Valley/Belfast recorded their sixth straight win with a 54-42 road win on Wednesday.
“We made a good run in the fourth quarter, but we just couldn’t quite get that one last basket to really get back into the game,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “Credit to GV/Belfast. He has them playing really good team basketball, and they work really hard. We definitely came out with a little more intensity in the second half. I am proud that we didn’t roll over, but we dug ourselves too much of a hole early on.”
Genesee Valley/Belfast (9-3) right out of the gate started the game on a strong note, using their inside game to their fullest advantage with an 11-2 run of Cuba-Rushford through half of the first quarter, including nine points in a row. The run would end after Taylor Searle knocked down a three-pointer that would begin a back-and-forth exchange of baskets until a 17-9 lead for the Lady JagDogs was gathered at the end of the frame.
The lead would grow to as much as 11 at one point with numerous Lady JagDogs continuing to get involved off of multiple miscues by the Lady Rebels (4-8), but it is a cushion that the team would hold over the hosts in white and blue for the remainder of the game, providing one last outscoring in the third quarter to pull away, despite Cuba-Rushford’s big offensive effort coming in the fourth.
Three different scorers eclipsed double figures for Genesee Valley/Belfast, with Mary Hamer leading the way with a team-high 18 points. Alicia Borden and Kaitlin Sadler each tallied 10 points. On the other side for the Lady Rebels, Searle recorded a game-high 25 points. Lillian Forward and Aleah Demick each chipped in with six points of their own.
