Tuesday Roundup: Red Raiders stymie Wellsville’s Senior Night, fuel 3-run 4th to break ice on 5-2 road win over Lions; B-R baseball collects huge League win, sweeps Fillmore at home in 10-2 win
WELLSVILLE — Senior Night. One of the final chances for the last year athletes to take their home field during the regular season.
That night came for three pivotal pieces to Wellsville's puzzle this season – Jere Havens, Alex Perkins and Dylan Culver, as the team celebrated and honored their leaders right before taking on their arch-rival from the East: The Hornell Red Raiders, on Tuesday in the Lion's Den.
Lions head coach Tom Delahunt said that even though it's his first year in the dugout with his team, the Senior leadership that they have displayed through the course of the season, is extraordinary.
“As a first-year coach, it's nice to have the Senior leadership from those three guys. They've been working hard all season long, and our team is very young. They tried to make this season the best one that we can have. We're going to miss them next year for sure.” he said.
After the celebration was over, it was time to get down to business.
Entering the day, Wellsville had won four straight games, with their offense and their pitching reaching towards the top of its peak in sublime fashion. There was no better time for it, with one week of regular season action left on the table.
As for Hornell, they were in town looking to avenge a high-octane defeat to the Lions in a game that saw both teams combine for 20 runs and a bounty of hits when they fell by an 11-9 count at Maple City Park last month.
This time around? A much different story.
Their series finale was all about defense and the pitching in front of it, as both teams came out dealing with three straight scoreless innings. But once a team was able to find that groove to break the ice, they would ride it until the end.
That being the Red Raiders, as they used a solid fourth inning outing of offense to open it up, hanging onto the lead all the way until the seventh where they would add on key pieces of insurance to ensure their victory to split the season series with a 5-2 road win.
“We were there. It was anyone's game going into the fifth inning,” said Delahunt. “They scored a couple extra runs in the seventh to put it away. The defense was really sloppy tonight, even though Jere pitched well enough to keep us in it. We had some miscues in the fourth inning when they got on the board. Mental breakdowns, missed defensive coverages. In a game where you have two teams that are so evenly matched, those miscues can make a big difference.”
Despite some quiet happenings across the first three innings of play by each team, Jere Havens took command of the mound and recorded a hot start to his game, fanning the first three outs of the game himself in Hornell's first go-around at the plate
Both squads were neck and neck in the middle innings and into the ending stage. A time where the Red Raiders we were able to break the ice in a big way, scoring three big runs in the third inning led by a two-run double down the left field line. The lead for Hornell grew to three with an RBI from Dom Nasca himself off a single into the shallow portion of the outfield.
Wellsville (9-7) would find a way to try and climb back into the game in the home halves of the fourth and fifth, beginning with a Cooper Brockway two-out RBI single into right field to cut the deficit down to a pair.
Cody Costello would begin to ramp up the pressure in the bottom of the fifth, as he added an RBI of his own to inch ever so closer towards Hornell. But in the end, the lead was upheld by the Red Raiders with their final two runs of the game coming in the top of the seventh.
The Lions scored two runs off four hits at the plate, while Hornell recorded five runs off eight total hits themselves. On the mound for the hosts, Havens went the distance by handing out nine chairs and walking just one. Helping the offense at the plate was Alex Perkins and Kavan O'Grady, each having a single.
Hornell was paced by Matt McKee, who tallied the win behind four strikeouts and two walks. On offense, Gates Miller and Shawn Rose each had two hits.
On Friday, the Lions will hop right back onto their home field for a 4 p.m. first pitch slated against the Bath-Haverling Rams.

Andover/Whitesville, Hinsdale split late night twinbill
ANDOVER — When the night concluded in Andover on Tuesday, the clock approached at the top of the 11th hour. In their doubleheader against the Bobcats of Hinsdale, 56 combined runs came across the plate in a series that saw each team split a game, with host Andover/Whitesville holding off a late fourth inning rally by Hinsdale in what was a 12-10 game one victory.
Andover/Whitesville (3-10) held a lead by as much as nine at one point during the first game battle with Hinsdale, as they struck while the iron was hot right away with a 4-0 lead through the first inning. After the two teams delivered a scoreless second, they went straight back to work again by adding to their lead with a pair in the bottom of the third inning.
The bats would come alive after Hinsdale (1-10) ended the shutout bid in the visiting half of the fourth, as Andover/Whitesville grew their lead out to a 10-1 advantage – their largest lead of the game.
But it would not last long however, as the Bobcats countered in rallying fashion to set up a battle coming down the stretch, as they scored a seven-run fifth to close the gap once more to a pair of runs entering the last two innings of play.
At game's end, the hosts in purple were able to hang on to secure the victory.
In the second game to end the night, it got even wilder.
It was an offensive and special teams affair between the two clubs, as they combined to score 34 runs in what was a 23-11 victory for the Bobcats, who would go on to pick up their very first win of the season in the process.
Complete statistics and box scores for each game were not made available upon publication.
Both teams are back in action Thursday night in a pair of 5 p.m. battles, with Andover/Whitesville paying a visit to Fillmore, while Hinsdale heads back home to host Bolivar-Richburg.
Bolivar-Richburg 10, Fillmore 2
BOLIVAR — At this stage of the season, the stakes have never been higher.
With one week of regular season play left to go, the race towards the Allegany County title in Division I is on. Entering the night on Tuesday, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg and the Eagles of Fillmore are both at the top vying for the League's top prize.
The Eagles have just one loss, while the Wolverines remain unbeaten in the County. You do the math.
In their first meeting, both teams engaged in a back-and-forth affair straight down to the wire. After what was an 8-7 edging of Fillmore in the last go-around over the road, the season series finale came to a close in Bolivar.
But this time around, it was much different. The Wolverines were at the very top of their game.
With Trey Buchholz and Landon Danaher splitting duties on the mound for Bolivar-Richburg, they would come together to hold Fillmore at bay, as they scored early on but would never let them reach the board again, freezing them to just three hits while the Wolverines offense broke away with a big ending to come away winners in a 10-2 rout.
“I'm very pleased. We knew this was going to be a big game, and we stepped up,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “We got down in the top of the first, and then we had a couple of mistakes on top of that. But we kept battling, and we managed to get some big hits at the right time. All the pitchers threw strikes today. It was a pitcher's duel for the most aprt, and when we got the timely hits to move the runners around, Landon (Danaher) and the defense settled in to keep Fillmore still.”
Like their previous meeting, Fillmore and Bolivar-Richburg (14-1) traded some early game barbs, with the Eagles striking first with the very first run, while the Wolverines provided a response an inning later by doubling up with a two-run second frame.
After each team scored a run in the third and then a scoreless bout of defense, the bats would pick back up for the hosts in black and red, as they went on to score the game's last seven runs, including a five-run home half of the sixth led by a collection of RBI singles after loading the bases behind the Eagles (11-2) defense.
Landon Danaher, Wyatt Karnuth and Cam MacDonell all had RBIs to provide Bolivar-Richburg in the frame to help branch out their lead over Fillmore insurmountably, going on to remain undefeated in League play with a season sweep of the Eagles.
Buchholz would go on to collect the victory behind three strikeouts and a walk before Danaher came on in relief and shut Fillmore right down, pitching four scoreless innings by allowing just one hit, handing out eight chairs and walking just two.
At the plate, four different Wolverines recorded a pair of hits at the plate to go with the team's 11 total, as Karnuth led the way with a double and three RBI. MacDonell would finish with two RBI to go with his two hits, while Aydin Sisson and Caden Allen each had two hits.
Fillmore was led by Nolan Krzeminski, who had two hits. Brent Zubikowski had the final hit. On the mound, Zach Sisson struck out four and walked three in his four-inning start.
Both teams are back in action Thursday night in a pair of 5 p.m. contests, with Bolivar-Richburg hitting the road to visit Hinsdale, while Fillmore heads back home to host Andover/Whitesville.

Cuba-Rushford 8, Genesee Valley/Belfast 5
CUBA — For the most part on Tuesday, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford were off to a flying start through the first three innings, with the offense coming to life while Benson McCumiskey was on fire on the hill.
As a result, a five-run frame for the Rebels started the game and gave them a lead to work with for the rest of the way, despite Genesee Valley/Belfast adding in a five-run inning themselves a short time later, as the hosts squeezed out a narrow 8-5 victory.
“Benson was in command all game, and the five runs have gave up were unearned,” Rebels coach Pat Wight said. “He had control of the zone and he looked very comfortable. It was good to see us bounce back after a tough game with C-G last night. We get a couple days off to do some fine-tuning, and rest some arms before a long stretch of games come up before the end of Sectionals.”
With two scoreless innings being carefully placed in the metaphorical wagon, Cuba-Rushford (6-9) was the first team to strike during their third go-around on offense, firing the offensive cannons with a five-run home half of the third which was powered up by a big two-run double off the bat of Austin Pinney to give them the lead to control.
The momentum continued farther into another inning, as the Rebels scratched across three more runs to give themselves their largest lead of the game – at eight. But a fuse went off for the JagDogs (6-9) to get offense of their own going.
In the fifth, they would respond with a five-run stand of their own in the top of the fifth, cutting their deficit from eight to three to amp up the pressure coming down the stretch. However, Cuba-Rushford was able to handle everything Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to throw in their direction, securing the win along the way.
McCumiskey was awarded the win for the Rebels behind six solid innings of work, fanning nine and walking three in the triumph. At the plate, Logan Lewis went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Sam Grover added in a hit and RBI himself.
For Genesee Valley/Belfast, Max Miller was the sole cause behind their five-run frame in the fifth, as he blasted a three-run double to erase even more of the deficit. But in the end, time would run out on the potential comeback bid for the Rebels, as the JagDogs managed to hang on for the win.
On the mound for the visitors, Matt Weaver went all seven innings by striking out seven and walking three. At the plate, Elden Aquila had a double.
Both teams will have Friendship/Scio up next on their slates, with Genesee Valley/Belfast having their first shot starting on Thursday back home, hosting them in a 5 p.m. battle in Belmont.
24 hours later, it will be Cuba-Rushford's turn to take on Friendship/Scio, as that meeting gets set for a 5 p.m. start on Friday.

Avoca/Prattsburgh 6, Friendship/Scio 2
PRATTSBURGH — Friendship/Scio's Nevaeh Ross and Avoca/Prattsburgh's Annabella Putnam were dealing left and right from within the circle on Tuesday in Prattsburgh. While they were handling their respective defenses, as for the offense, the runs would come sparingly.
A bundle of scoreless innings were docked on the scoreboard, but when it mattered most, the bats for Avoca/Prattsburgh were poised to make some noise.
After a quick run from Friendship/Scio to open the game up, the hosts would string together a few of their own in the home half of the third inning, taking a lead away from their opposition that they would never give back to them, despite some pressure, as Avoca/Prattsburgh squeezed out a tremendous 6-2 victory on their home field.
The game would open up in the top of the third after two shutout innings by Ross and Putnam were recorded, as Friendship/Scio (10-4) saw Morghyn Ross collect an RBI to plate a run. Avoca/Prattsbugh in turn, would respond with four of their own off three different swings.
Putnam, Emma Carlton and Susie Moore all provided the big RBI swings to help break it open, with Moore blasting a crucial two-run single, while Carlton and Putnam each garnered one RBI on their singles.
The lead for the hosts was cut back down to half after Friendship/Scio saw Kiara Grover add to the attack with a deep double into the outfield to score Keely Sisson on the play, as the visitors now saw themselves down by a pair in good positioning to try and make a go-ahead move down the stretch.
But Avoca/Prattsburgh would deny that chance during their final at-bats of the game, as they scored two more massive pieces of insurance to spread their lead out against Friendship/Scio insurmountably to sustain the lead until the end.
Friendship/Scio collected two runs off just five hits on offense. In the circle, Nevaeh Ross fanned eight and walked two in her start, while Putnam handed out 14 strikeouts in turn for Avoca/Prattsburgh.
Up next, the Lady Saints of Lima Christian are coming to town to visit Friendship/Scio tonight for a 5 p.m. battle in Scio.

Cuba-Rushford 7, Genesee Valley/Belfast 3
CUBA — Both Genesee Valley/Belfast and Cuba-Rushford alternated scoring innings from start to finish on Tuesday. But there was a common denominator in the midst of it all – it began and ended with the host Lady Rebels.
The ice was broken with a great start out of the gate by the hosts, and then was secured in the end with massive pieces of insurance paying a large amount of dividends coming down the stretch to close out the game, as the Lady Rebels took care of business with a 7-3 victory over the Lady JagDogs.
Cuba-Rushford (4-9) was the first to strike during their opening round of at-bats, as they scored two big runs which were driven in by Harlie Jones and her two-run double that she launched into the outfield to open up the scoring right away.
On the other hand, Genesee Valley/Belfast's (6-8) three runs were scored all by running on the bases, scoring one in the second to cut their early deficit in half before doing it again later on in the top of the fourth with a two-run fame that saw them trail 5-3 at the end of the fourth.
After Jones and Laney Murphy contributed some big RBI singles in the third inning to push the Lady Rebels lead, it would now come down to brass tax in their final two stands of offense. The hosts would make sure the opportunity to provide some clutch hitting would not go unnoticed, as they scored two massive pieces of insurance that included a Murphy RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead out to four.
From that point on, the rest was on Sydney Howard, as she allowed a runner to reach on error before shutting down the Lady JagDogs offense with the next three batters tumbling in order to end the game.
Howard would record the win in the circle for the Lady Rebels, striking out nine and walking seven in the tossed two-hit victory. At the plate, Jones and Murphy each finished with three hits, while Lillian Forward had two.
As for Genesee Valley/Belfast, Harley Proctor had both of the team's hits on the attack, recording two singles. In the circle, Ashley Burrows fanned five in her complete game effort for the Lady JagDogs, who now head home to Belmont to welcome in Friendship/Scio for a 5 p.m. visit on Thursday.
Cuba-Rushford is right back onto the field tonight, as they hit the road to visit the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines in a 5 p.m. first pitch of their own.

Andover/Whitesville 8, Hammondsport 4
HAMMONDSPORT — Sometimes in the game of softball, you have to make enough noise on offense that will resonate from start to finish. For the Andover/Whitesville ladies over the road on Tuesday, that was exactly the case against Hammondsport.
The team would get off to a furious start at the plate to form a big early lead to hold on to. But little by little, the host Lady Lakers would chip away at Andover/Whitesivlle, scoring a pair of runs in the home half of their first at-bats, and later in the sixth.
But the clutch hitting on offense came through in a humongous way to keep Andover/Whitesville out in front in the end, as they returned home victorious with some key insurance runs in the seventh helping provide an 8-4 win to send them back up to .500 on the season.
“This was a great win tonight for the girls. Zoey (Lee) was outstanding keeping the batters off balance at the plate, and the defense behind her was stellar as well. This was one of those games to be a part of, for everyone.” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Al Barber.
Special teams would play a key role early on for Andover/Whitesville (6-6) in the top of the first, during their first at-bats, as they capitalized on a series of walks handed out by Hammondsport because an RBI single from Makaila Brewster and a sacrifice fly from Emily Schweigart helped power up the opening outing.
In the bottom half however, Hammondsport's response was just as fast, as Danica Dresser blasted a lead-off solo home run that left the park in a hurry. The home run would help set up a 5-2 deficit that would ultimately work its way down to one after four straight scoreless innings.
After hanging a crucial zero to Andover/Whitesville in the sixth, the Lady Lakers began to inch ever so closer to them with their final two runs coming across in the bottom of the sixth.
That would provide Andover/Whitesville one last chance to secure their lead for good. That help would wind up giving the visitors the room they needed to hang onto dear life for the win, as Aislinn Hamilton and Gabbi Hall both came through with massive hits, including an RBI double for Hamilton before Hall crushed a two-run triple in the seventh inning.
The two clutch hits would put a bow on Andover/Whitesville's win, as Zoey Lee held off the opposition with three strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, Kennedy Bledsoe fronted the attack with two of the team's five hits in all.
Andover/Whitesville is back on the road Thursday night with a 7 p.m. first pitch slated in Fillmore against the host Lady Eagles.

Bolivar-Richburg 12, Fillmore 1
RICHBURG — With their first loss of the season and a series split with the Lady Lions of Wellsville now in the rearview mirror, the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines now shifted their focus onto getting back on track in time for the big dance after next week.
24 hours later back home, they went on to do just that against the visiting Lady Eagles of Fillmore, starting fast with a 7-0 lead through the first three innings of play and never looking back on it the rest of the way, as they bounced back successfully with a 12-1 triumph in Richburg on Tuesday.
“It was nice to be able to get that bounce back game after that loss last night. Everyone contributed at the plate, and Haley (Mascho) pitched a great game. She located and mixed her pitches up very well.” said Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell.
The offensive brigade for the Lady Wolverines (12-1) saw 12 runs off 10 hits come into fruition, with seven of those runs being scoring in the first three innings of play to set the tone against Fillmore right from the start.
With help from three different Lady Wolverines across the game, they would score five of the last six runs to cement their lead for good, including a four-run fifth inning to cap off the scoring. Of the bats, Jessica Majot went 4-for-5 with four total RBI and two runs scored. McKinlee Harris added in three hits, driving in a pair and scoring once, while Braelin Bentley drove in four runs of her own off two hits.
On the mound, Haley Mascho stood her ground by holding Fillmore (8-6) to six hits, fanning eight Lady Eagles to pick up the win in her complete game.
As for the Lady Eagles, they were able to record their only RBI in the top of the fourth from Skylar Gaddy, who would go on to record a 2-for-3 outing of offense to pave the way, while Preslee Miller added in a double. In the circle, Saige Friedl fanned four and walked six in her start.
Bolivar-Richburg is back in action tonight back home, as they host Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. contest. As for the Lady Eagles, they head back home to host Andover/Whitesville for a 7 p.m. battle under the lights.

B-R splits home twinbill against C-R, Houghton Academy
BOLIVAR — Two matches were in store for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg to start their new week on the court. At the end of the night on Tuesday, the team was able to come away with a split, taking a 5-0 decision over Cuba-Rushford to begin before falling to the hands of Houghton Academy by a 4-1 count to conclude the action.
In the first match, the Wolverines (5-3) were able to capitalize on three forfeit victories that would automatically help them clinch match victory out of the gate. Just two singles matches would take the court, both being collected by Jacopo Canepa and Anthony Densmore to secure the match win, as they rolled to 10-1 victories at first and second singles respectively, over Cuba-Rushford's Ethan Cole and Tyler Findlay.
Ben Kisel would add a third singles forfeit while grabbing both doubles matches along the way.
To close out, the Wolverines would had to fight tooth and nail from start to finish with the Panthers of Houghton Academy. Despite two hardfought matches in the singles division, it was a battle that the Panthers were able to come away victorious in behind two three-set matches from Alex Fraile and Caleb Hilshire.
At first singles, Fraile had to find his way back after a back-and-forth first set, as she set the tone for the rest of the way with a dominant second set finish that led to a three-set win over Canepa.
For Hilshire at second singles, his path ahead was a tretcherous one, having to navigate through back-to-back tiebreaks. After splitting them with Densmore, he would rebound after the second set defeat by rolling towards a 6-2 third set win to secure the overall victory by a 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 decision.
Houghton Academy (5-2) would finish off the match win over the Wolverines with a first doubles win from the team of Lucy Lu and Lucas Matias Rocha (6-4, 6-3), as they claimed victory over Gwen Coats and Andrew Crawford.
At second doubles, Bolivar-Richburg would lay claim to their only win against the Panthers from the team of Zane Pangburn and Nebula Wilson-Smith, as they rolled past Houghton Academy's team of Hajar Ahmadi and Katharinia Held for a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
All three teams will return to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday, with the Wolverines playing host to undefeated Fillmore, while Cuba-Rushford (0-8) and Houghton Academy head to Houghton College to face one another in a contest of their own.
