Monday Roundup: Wellsville avoids season sweep, hands Lady Wolverines 1st loss behind 4-run 4th to break game open in 9-2 win; Fri/Scio ladies roll behind Ross in home rout of Alfred-Almond

WELLSVILLE — A battle of State ranks. A colossal meeting of the titans. Call it what you will, but every time both the Lady Lions of Wellsville and the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg get together to renew their regular season rivalry, it always morphs into a grueling battle straight down to the finish.

We saw that last month in Richburg, when the Lady Wolverines were able to squeeze one away from the Lady Lions to hand them their first loss of the season. You better believe on Monday that redemption was on the minds of Class B's No. 3 ranked squad, as they went up against Class C's top school one final time to settle the score.

On the grounds of historic Tullar Field, and in front of a packed crowd on hand, the two teams clashed in a back and forth defensive battle through the opening stages.

But in the end, the Lady Lions would not be denied.

After dishing out a quick inning to Bolivar-Richburg to begin the fourth, the offense came to life after taking a 2-1 lead through the first three frames, as they recorded a big four-run frame that would ultimately give Wellsville the room they needed to stay in the driver's seat the rest of the way to hand the Lady Wolverines their first loss of the season in turn while splitting the season series with a 9-2 win.

“I was really proud of how our team played. We had competitive at-bats throughout the order, and Makenzie (Cowburn) continued to go out and give us a strong outing in the circle, every time she goes out. Our team had great focus to get this win.” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.

Right away, both Bolivar-Richburg and Wellsville (16-2) battle quickly through the first three innings of play, starting with a scoreless first in a matter of flashes before the scoring began with the Lady Wolverines jumping aboard first behind a Kayli Giardini fielder's choice with the bases loaded behind Makenzie Cowburn, scoring just one to take the lead.

Wellsville in turn, would double up the Lady Wolverines (11-1) to take their first lead themselves, which would ultimately be theirs to control for the rest of the game, as Marissa Ordway knocked in a run off a single into right center field to plate Averee Palmatier with no one out.

The Lady Lions would add a fielder's choice of their own to finish off their half of the second inning with a one-run lead.

The defenses began to settle in through the third, despite some more pressure from the hosts in gray in the bottom half with two runners on. The Wellsville defense would hold Bolivar-Richburg still through the fourth inning to provide themselves some more momentum to use in their next at-bats.

After it was all said and done, the Lady Lions would go on to dock four runs in the home half, led by a massive two-run single for Marley Adams which would give the team the room they needed to secure the victory in the end, adding three final runs along the way in their final at-bats of the evening.

Wellsville scored nine runs off 10 hits, with three different Lady Lions scoring at least a pair of hits. Ordway had three of those knocks, along with an RBI. Brazen Beckwith drove in a pair off two hits, while Emma Dunaway had two hits herself. Helping further the cause was Makenna Dunbar, who had a double, while Natalie Adams had an RBI single.

In the circle, the win was credited to Cowburn, as she held Bolivar-Richburg to four hits across three strikeouts and three walks.

For the Lady Wolverines, Maddy Thornton had two of those hits to power up the offense, which scored one last run in the top of the sixth. On defense, Jessica Majot struck out four and walked three in her relief appearance. Bolivar-Richburg will return home and aim to rebound against Fillmore tonight in a 5 p.m. contest.

Wellsville will now get set to host Section IV's Corning, the State's 3rd ranked team in Class AA, on Wednesday in a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Friendship/Scio 12, Alfred-Almond 1

SCIO — Just days removed from their epic clash against Bolivar-Richburg late last week, Friendship/Scio was on the rebound.

Their opponent on Monday was no slouch – that being the Alfred-Almond Lady Eagles, who are as tough as they come not only in Class D, but in Section V in recent years. Fortunately enough for the hosts, they were able to get the pistons firing on all cylinders right from the start.

While Nevaeh Ross held complete command all game long from inside the circle, the bats for Friendship/Scio would soon follow with Katherine Lamberson leading the way behind a massive night at the plate, helping the team cruise past the Lady Eagles and toward their 10th win of the season by a 12-1 count in Scio.

“It was great to bounce back tonight. We hit the ball really well tonight, especially in the middle of our lineup. While we found our bats, Nevaeh gave us another great game. She pitched well, and this was the kind of game we wanted to get, to build our confidence back up.” said Friendship/Scio coach Deb Kane.

Friendship/Scio (10-3) start off strong through the first three innings of play, grabbing a 5-0 jump on Alfred-Almond, with Kendra Gleason starting it off in the opening stage with a groundball to the left side of the infield which would score a run in the process to break the ice.

The bats would continue to escalate going forward with another run off a Kiara Grover single coming across, and then the first of two huge two-run hits from Lamberson beginning in the bottom of the third, as it opened up the five-run lead on the Lady Eagles.

After both teams shelled out quick stands in the fourth, Friendship/Scio went straight back to work with seven combined runs in their last two outings at the plate, including a three-run fifth that saw Kadence Donohue power it up with a big RBI double, while Lamberson added a two-run double to finish off what was a magnificent day of offense in the team's four-run sixth inning.

In the midst of their offensive explosion, Nevaeh Ross was at the top of her game once more in the circle, holding Alfred-Almond without a single hit up until the top of the seventh, when they led off with a single to erase the no-hit bid. At the same time, Alfred-Almond would also score their first and only run of the game.

Ross would finish with 15 strikeouts in her one-hit complete game. On the attack, Lamberson led all Friendship/Scio bats with three hits, totaling four RBI. Ross, Gleason and Donohue would follow with two hits each.

Friendship/Scio heads down the road to Belmont on Thursday, as they visit Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

BELMONT — Avoca/Prattsburgh's Annabella Putnam and Genesee Valley/Belfast's Hannah Southwick-Powers were both on a mission for their respective teams on Monday. To start the new week of action, the two hurlers were docking outs left and right until there were no more to be had.

The defensive battle between the two clubs began to sink in fairly quickly in the beginning of their battle in Belmont, but then the offense began to pick up.

Fortunately enough, the Lady JagDogs were the team that struck first, as they scored the game's first four runs – two coming across in both the fourth and fifth innings to crack the ice large enough to remain in front of Avoca/Prattsburgh permanently, going on to take the 4-1 victory for themselves in the dead heat.

“I tip my hat to both girls, they were hanging outs left and right tonight,” said GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan. “We had to manufacture some sort of offense, and we had to be aggressive at the same time. The defenses were good, and the pitching was good, it was just a matter of whoever was going to score first would wind up winning the game. Fortunately, we were able to do that and this gives the girls a great confidence builder as we continue to play much better. This is the time to get rolling.”

After three shutout innings were issued by both Putnam and Southwick-Powers through the first three innings of play, Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-7) cranked their offense into gear in the home half of the fourth with back-to-back singles from Southwick-Powers and Sondra Guilford starting it off.

From there, special teams would fuel both runs they would scratch across, with Southwick-Powers scoring first off a sacrifice from Jenna Hillbefore Guilford used her legs to make her way home on a passed ball to extend their lead to a pair.

Avoca/Prattsburgh would find their way onto the board a short time later though, cutting their deficit right down the middle with their first and only run of the game. But in the clutch, the Lady JagDogs went on to shell out some insurance as their response – a two-run fifth led by an RBI single off the bat of Lexi Burrows to extend their lead to three, for good.

Southwick-Powers would be the one that came away victorious over Putnam at the end of their pitcher's duel, as the Genesee Valley/Belfast hurler struck out nine and walked one in her tossed two-hit victory.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will get right back to work tonight over the road once again, as they visit the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. contest.

Fillmore 12, Arkport/Canaseraga 2

FILLMORE — One swing of the bat can change the momentum of the game, entirely. In an early battle that saw Arkport/Canaseraga spring out to an early lead against Fillmore, the Lady Eagles started to kick into gear taking action.

While navigating their way towards a tie after the first three innings of play, it would get closer to crunch time. In the home half of the fourth, the pendulum would find a way to change direction.

That would lean towards the favor of the Lady Eagles.

Fillmore would supply a big go-ahead RBI single from Torann Wolfer, and that swing was enough to create a big enough tide to keep it in their favor for the remainder of the game, as the Lady Eagles created an offensive tsunami in the bottom of the fifth by scoring nine runs, adding to their lead for good, en route towards a 12-2 home victory on Monday.

“We were slow coming out of the gates physically and mentally, but we did enough to pull away,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “It was Senior Trip time this past weekend, and we had three days off with no action. It took us a while to get rolling, but now we have a week left with three pretty good teams we will face. It's all about getting better each and every day. We will feel good about being 8-5, and we'll hope to improve on that to finish the season out.”

Arkport/Canaseraga would start fast against the Lady Eagles out of the gate, as they took an early 2-0 lead for themselves after their first two outings on offense. But Fillmore (8-5) would find a way to regain traction at the plate, tying the game up in the bottom of the second with a lead-off double from Saige Friedl leading it off.

She would ultimately find her way in off an RBI single from Kada Frazier to cut the deficit in half, before scoring herself later to tie the game after the first three innings.

Then in the back half of the game, clutch hits were starting to become paramount. Fillmore managed to find one from Wolfer, who swung at the second pitch she saw and drove it into left center field, scoring Emily Krzeminski on the play to take the lead away from the Lady Wolves.

The hit from Wolfer set up shop for what ultimately came to be for Fillmore – a massive momentum shifter, as they went on to score nine more runs in the home half of the fifth, the majority of which were scratched across on special teams after capitalizing on multiple Arkport/Canaseraga errors in the field to pull away for good.

Leading the bats was Friedl, who went 2-for-4 with her double and an RBI. Wolfer along with Sadie Wolcott would finish with two hits and an RBI each. In the circle, Friedl struck out five and walked three in her complete game three-hitter.

Fillmore is back on the field tonight with a 5 p.m. road trip to Bolivar-Richburg.

Andover/Whitesville 17, Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg 2 (F-5)

WHITESVILLE — The Andover/Whitesville offense was smacking the ball left and right at the plate, while Makaila Brewster accounted for near perfection from within the circle, as she held Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg to just one hit while the team capitalized on a fast first tenure to power a 17-2 home win in Whitesville after five innings, Monday night.

“Makaila was absolutely dealing tonight,” Andover/Whitesville co-coach Al Barber said. “She had a perfect game going up until the fifth inning. She had a minor hiccup to start, but she settled right back in and regained her composure to finish the game strong. The defense provided some solid plays behind her. Offensively, the bats were lively to give us a great game.”

Andover/Whitesville (5-6) scored 17 runs off 14 hits at the plate. Of those runs, 11 of them came during the team's first at-bats with Olivia Waters providing one wail of a start for the hosts.

Waters scored four RBI in the inning alone as Andover/Whitesville blew through their entire lineup, and then some, as she posted a pair of two-run hits beginning with a single and later, a two-run double to help cap off the tone-setting inning.

She wasn't the only hitter to record a pair of two-run hits. Helping the cause, was Aislinn Hamilton who had a two-run single of her own from within the team's 11-run first inning. After Andover/Whitesville added more behind a four-run third later on, Hamilton belted a two-run triple immediately after Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg spoiled Brewster's perfect bid, which would help set up shop for the endgame stage.

Brewster was in command across all five innings for Andover/Whitesville, holding Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg to a single hit while handing out eight chairs and walking just one to complete the victory.

The offense was propelled by five different batters who all recorded at least a pair of hits, including Waters and Hamilton, who both had two. Kennedy Bledsoe had the biggest bat of them all, earning three hits, while Rachel Jackson and Gabbi Hall joined in on the hitting parade with two each.

Andover/Whitesville is back on the field tonight over the road, as they take on the Hammondsport Lady Lakers in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Wellsville 9, Olean 7

ST. BONAVENTURE — The Lions of Wellsville and host Olean saw their offenses form an eruption that would turn into a back-and-forth affair through a good portion of the battle, Monday evening. Haymakers were traded between the Lions and Huskies, but the knockout blow was delivered coming down the homestretch.

Wellsville has Jere Havens to thank for it, as the cardiac kids came through once again in the last three innings of play.

The Lions went on to account for six of the game's final eight runs, with Havens' big hit in the top of the sixth providing the difference maker, setting up for a flood of insurance to come across in their final at-bats while the defense held off a late comeback bid to secure their fourth straight win by a 9-7 count at St. Bonaventure.

“I think one of the differences in the game was the production in the second half of our lineup,” Lions coach Tom Delahunt said. “Hitters six, seven, eight and nine really came through for us tonight, and it made a huge difference. We put the bat on the ball, and for the most part it went into play. We only struck out five times, and we stayed aggressive. Some of our regulars like Cody (Costello), Alex (Green) and Tyler (Vogel) didn't have the hits they normally do, but that was when the bottom half pitcked up when they had to, and when we needed to.”

In the early stages of the fierce battle, Wellsville (9-6) had to ward off some pressure provided by the Huskies after taking a 3-0 lead right out of the gate. With the hosts creeping closer to their lead in their first at-bats, they would work their way into the lead after three complete, scoring a pair in the third inning to grab the 4-3 lead to control.

Down the home stretch, it was a matter of what team wanted it more in the end, as both Wellsville and Olean continued to deal. But when the time came, Havens made sure the Lions wanted it the most, as he provided the final lead change of the game with his two-run single engineering a 6-5 lead that they would hold onto for dear life.

In the top of the seventh, the insurance would come. Three additional runs for the visitors would come across, one on the same play that began at the plate, as Aidan Riley blasted an RBI-triple-on-error into the outfield, touching all the bags before scoring to help push Wellsville's lead to four.

Olean would provide a late response coming down their final home stretch of the game, but in the end, it was not enough to overcome, as they scored two final runs to cut their deficit down to a pair.

Wellsville totaled nine runs off nine hits on the offensive, with Havens leading the charge behind his solid 3-for-4 outing, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Riley followed with two hits himself, driving in and scoring a pair of runs. Logan Dunbar chipped in with a hit and two RBI, while Alex Green, Cooper Brockway and Kavan O'Grady all had a hit and RBI to contribute.

On the mound, the Lions saw another phenomenal start from Ty Vogel, going six strong behind 10 strikeouts and four walks to pick up the victory.

“He really had to battle through his innings,” Delahunt said of Vogel. “He had a couple of really long innings, and he had a little tough time getting comfortable at Bonaventure. But he eventually got into a rhythm, he started to mix his pitches really well. Sometimes that's what you have to do when you don't have your best stuff. He fought through an enormous amount of adversity to help give us this win.”

The Lions are back home tonight to host Senior Night, where they will honor their three Seniors – Havens, Alex Perkins and Dylan Culver, before taking on the Hornell Red Raiders in a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.

Fillmore 2, Arkport/Canaseraga 1

FILLMORE — The pitcher's duel was a common trend across much of the area on Monday. Among the other places that managed to see one unfold, was in Fillmore.

Arkport/Canaseraga's Tidus Marvin and Fillmore's Graham Cahill fought pitch for pitch across all seven innings of play in a defensive battle that saw runs become an absolute luxury to hang on the scoreboard out in the outfield.

For the most part, both the Wolves and Eagles had to rely on special teams around the bases if they wanted to do any sort of ice-cracking on the frontlines.

It would be a one-run game at the end of it, and when the time for manufacturing arrived, the hosts in green came through.

Fillmore would use their legs to score both of their runs, the latter of which giving them the lead over Arkport/Canaseraga in the bottom of the fifth, gaining the upperhand and using it to hang onto until the final pitch was thrown by Cahill at the plate, as he went on to win the pitcher's duel and the game for the Eagles by a 2-1 count over the Wolves.

“It was a nice win, and the kids played really well. The defense was solid, and I thought Arkport was pretty solid too making some plays in the field,” said Eagles coach Bill Nolan. “Graham threw well to keep up with their pitcher. They loaded the bases behind him pretty early on, but he was able to get out of it and settle down afterward. It was a pretty good game I think both coaches would be satisified with.”

After both Marvin and Cahill delivered two consecutive shutout innings to begin their clash, Fillmore (11-1) would be the first to strike in the home half of the third, with Nolan Krzeminski charging up the special teams on offense with his fielder's choice reaching the infield far enough to plate Jude Beardsley from third to get the Eagles off and running.

Through the battle once more on the mound, Arkport/Canaseraga found their opening in the top of the fifth, taking the lead way from Fillmore and using it to tie the game at one on each side with their lone run.

Fortunately for the Eagles, they collected one final run almost immediately after the Wolves forced the tie, as Alex Ellsworth led off the inning with a triple, landing on third before coming home to score the team's go-ahead and game-winning run, securing the victory – their 11th in the last 12 games, for good.

Cahill would record the victory on the rubber for the Eagles, striking out six and walking one. At the plate, Fillmore collected four hits in all with Ellsworth tallying a pair including his lead-off triple in the fifth. Aiden Wagner and Jude Beardsley rounded off with a hit each.

Fillmore will now get set for a big road trip tonight, as they visit the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg 4, Cuba-Rushford 3

CUBA — The Rebels of Cuba-Rushford were given a chance right away to make some noise on Monday. After they went on to take an early lead from Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg, the defenses began to hunker down.

Although the hosts were able to take the lead away from their visiting opposition, they would garner multiple opportunities to help branch it out. Instead, Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg would take matters into their own hands.

In the top of the fifth and going forward, the game was now in their possession, as they posted a game-tying frame before taking the lead away with a clutch final session of at-bats that resulted in them taking the lead away from the Rebels for good, as they edged their way back onto the buses and back home with a 4-3 road win.

“It was a very well played game by both teams tonight,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “We had some chances early on with guys aboard to extend our lead, but we just could not find the big hit when we needed it the most. I am proud of the effort from the guys and how they were able to grind this out, with this being out fourth game in the last five days.”

Through a complete first inning that saw Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg take the opening bite in the starting frame, some zeroes would be traded. That was until the Rebels (5-9) dug their way onto the board with a three-run frame paced by a sacrifice fly from Jon White, and later an RBI single from Austin Clement to take a 3-1 lead.

It would remain the same score all the way up until the top half of the fifth, when Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg saw Jared Ainsworth come up with one of the team's clutchest hits of the afternoon – a two-run double to tie the game right back up again at three going into the game's final inning.

In the seventh, the Rebels would lose complete control of their lead, as they scored a go-ahead single from Hunter McCaffery, plating a run along the way to maintain their side of the boat. In the bottom half, the team would go on to shut down Cuba-Rushford, hanging one final zero to end the day by tallying the victory.

Despite the outcome, White provided another solid stand on the mound for the Rebels, as he struck out six and walked one in his six-inning start. At the plate, Logan Lewis led all batters with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI.

The Rebels are back in action tomorrow night right back on their home field, as they host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 5 p.m. battle.

Avoca/Prattsburgh 21, Friendship/Scio 2 (F-5)

PRATTSBURGH — All that Avoca/Prattsburgh needed to get their game off on the right foot, was a quick knockout punch in their first at-bats, as they went on to score a 9-0 lead against Friendship/Scio that they never looked back from to roll towards their eighth win in the last nine by a 21-2 count on Monday, in Prattsburgh.

While the bats collected 21 runs off 12 total hits at the plate, Hayden Abbott held Friendship/Scio (5-9) in check for most of the game, keeping them at bay with just five hits behind 12 strikeouts and two walks in his tossed complete game for the hosts in green.

Friendship/Scio was able to find their way onto the board for the first and only time in the top half of the third, as Ethan Davenport provided one of his team-leading three hits with a two-run single. He would finish 3-for-3 at the plate.

“He's the best looking eighth grader I've seen all year,” Avoca/Prattsburgh coach Dennis Miles said of Davenport. “He is really good, and he is certainly someone that you can build a team around for the future. I was a little disappointed in the sloppy play on our part, but we're still putting things together, especially on the mound. But it seems to all be coming together at the right time.”

Leading the bats for Avoca/Prattsburgh (10-4) was Macoy Putnam, who went 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Pacey Hopkins, Jamel Crowder and Josiah Stilson all had two hits each to pitch in, with Hopkins and Stilson each recording a double. The hosts will travel to Hammondsport in a 5 p.m. first pitch tonight.

Friendship/Scio is back on the road Wednesday night for a 5 p.m. visit to Lima Christian.

BOLIVAR — The bats came alive right from the start, despite Andover/Whitesville breaking the ice first in the visiting half of the opener, as the Wolverines responded by setting the tone for the rest of the game with the next 19 runs, 15 of them coming in the second inning to pull away towards a 19-1 win in five innings on Monday.

Five different Wolverines (13-1) all recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate, with the team recording 16 in all to fuel the offensive victory. Among them, Landon Danaher led the way with a 3-for-3 afternoon, driving in a pair and scoring three times. Aydin Sisson and Matt Mitchell chipped in with three hits each with Mitchell driving in three runs.

Furthering the cause was Trey Buchholz and Reiss Gaines, who each garnered three RBI off two hits, while Wyatt Karnuth tallied an inside-the-park two-run home run. On the mound, Sawyer Johnson collected the victory with five strikeouts and two walks.

Andover/Whitesville (2-9) was able to get on the board with the first run of the game behind just three hits, with Layton Miller's triple paving the way. Luke Erdmann would also add in a hit.

Both teams are back in action tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with Bolivar-Richburg looking to complete the season sweep against Fillmore, while Andover/Whitesville looks to regroup back home in Whitesville against Hinsdale.

GOLF

Fillmore 39, Bolivar-Richburg 16

RUSHFORD — A balanced scorecard from top to bottom for the Eagles of Fillmore is what paved the way towards their sixth straight victory on the links Monday afternoon in Rushford, as they rolled towards a 39-16 victory over Bolivar-Richburg at Allegany Hills behind their top-scoring round from Haley Hall.

Hall led all golfers on the greens by shooting the match's medalist round, firing the lowest round of 55 to help propel Fillmore (6-0) towards the finish line. Helping further the cause was Anderson Wiltsey, who was not far behind with a 58. Reid Cockle added in a 60, while Will Roeske and Isaac Sylvester chipped in with rounds of 62 and 68 to round off.

Bolivar-Richburg (1-4) saw Parker Worth record the team's lowest round of the match, carding a 67. Gauge Robinson and Anthony Donoghue each followed with rounds of 69, while Ryan Greeson and Maddox Day finished the scoring with a round of 72 each.

Both teams are back on the links Wednesday afternoon in a pair of 4 p.m. tee times, with Fillmore going for their seventh straight win against Genesee Valley/Belfast at the Wellsville Country Club, while Bolivar-Richburg heads back home to host Hinsdale at the Bolivar Golf Club.

WELLSVILLE — The JagDogs of Genesee Valley/Belfast were at the top of their game on a gorgeous Monday on the golf course, as they saw Will Guilford shoot one of his best rounds of the season to help lead a balanced scorecard towards victory against visiting Cuba-Rushford, as they strolled towards a 39-15 home win at the Wellsville Country Club.

Guilford led the front of the pack for Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-6), as he earned medalist honors by finishing with a match-low round of 54. Chris Weaver was not very far behind him on the scorecard, pitching in with a 55. Dakota Hemphill tallied a 62, while Deric Grantier and Addy Herring each concluded with a 65.

BOYS TENNIS

Fillmore sweeps home twinbill with GV/Belfast

HOUGHTON — The Eagles of Fillmore remained untouchable on the tennis courts to begin the new week on Monday, providing a sweep of all six singles matches while adding four forfeit wins from the doubles department to pick up a pair of 5-0 wins over Genesee Valley/Belfast at Houghton College.
