Despite fouls and turnovers, Hammondsport coasts past host Andover behind well-balanced offense

ANDOVER — The goal for the Andover Panthers against visiting Hammondsport on Friday was to hold their opposition in check while capitalizing on a quick start of their own.

But the Lakers caused it to backfire, flipping the script on the Panthers despite numerous fouls and turnovers plaguing the first two quarters of play. In the first eight minutes, the visitors rolled out to a strong 21-7 run to ignite their lead behind an offense that saw every player score in their 91-33 victory over Andover.

In the midst of the turnover and foul-plagued opening frame, each team start the night off with their first three-point play, with Andover’s coming from Spencer Cook. From that point, the Lakers went on an explosive 17-4 run to end the quarter strong.

In the second quarter, the fouls and turnovers carried over. Despite the struggles, the Panthers (3-3) started to chip away at their deficit, only for Hammondsport to branch it back out in the form of an 11-3 run after taking a 26-11 lead midway through the stanza.

The half ended with the Panthers finding a glimmer within their offense behind a three-point play from Preston Ordway, as Andover finished up with six of the last eight points to trail 39-20 at the break.

The Lakers however saved their best two quarters for last, docking a pair of 26-point frames in the third and fourth to eclipse the 90-point mark while holding Andover to just 13 points along the way.

Spencer Cook led the Panthers in scoring with a team-high 15 points. Chris Walker added eight points, while Ordway had six.

Andover returns to action after the holiday break, as they travel to visit the Jasper-Troupsburg Wildcats on January 6.
