Wednesday Tennis: Eagles grab another shutout, knock off Rebels behind sweep of singles to record 8th straight win

HOUGHTON — While the weather saw a wintery return to halt the day of activity on Wednesday, a match on the tennis court originally scheduled to be played in Cuba was flip-flopped to the indoor tennis facility on the campus of Houghton College — home of the Eagles of Fillmore.

In that battle, the Eagles continued a trend they’ve started since the beginning of the season: winning. Just three matches were underway between both foes, and they were battles that all three singles competitors swept for Fillmore, as Carter Sisson, Eben Schilke and Carson Sanasith all took wins to help set up a 5-0 match sweep of the Rebels.

Sisson, Schilke and Sanasith all collected the victories to help garner the match win for Fillmore (8-0), with Schilke and Sanasith leading the way behind straight-set shutouts over their opponents, Cuba-Rushford’s Ethan Cole and Tyler Findlay at second and third singles, respectively.

Sisson would collect a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nate Cole at the top of the scorecard, at first singles.

In addition, Fillmore would wrap up the match sweep with a pair of forfeit wins over the Rebels (0-3) in the doubles department, which were awarded to the teams of Joe Derck and Layton Sanasith at first doubles, and Noah Strickland and Marcus Wolfer at second doubles.

Both teams are back on the court Friday night in a pair of 5 p.m. contests, as the Eagles go for their ninth straight win back on the road with a visit to Scio, while Cuba-Rushford stays home to welcome in Genesee Valley/Belfast.
