Thursday Roundup: Wellsville records late 7th inning rally, but fall short in 6-5 road defeat to Bath-Haverling; Wolverines drop 1st loss of season in close fight with Hornell

BATH — If you’ve ever seen Rocky IV, where Rocky goes toe-to-toe with Ivan Drago, envision that on the baseball field with two of Class B2’s best as the legendary fictional boxers — Wellsville and Bath-Haverling. Thursday night was a fight until the final bell in Bath, and what a fight it was.

In the early going, both teams traded barbs back and forth in the first three inning strand. But in the next, the host Rams began to take over, scoring the next five unanswered runs to extend their lead. But like the Lions have faced for much of the season, they would rally back again to make the final inning interesting.

The comeback was mounted with a three-run top of the seventh, allowing Wellsville to cut their lead down to one in their final at-bats of the game. But fortunately for the Rams defense, they were able to stop the bleeding just in time to secure a big Class B2 victory over the Lions, as they held on to take a narrow 6-5 victory.

“We play with such heart, and the guys all play for each other. We’re never out of it, and it’s so much fun coaching these kids. Win or lose today, it doesn’t make a difference,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “This young team is coming together, and Bath is the number one team in our class now. We were a little unlucky at times, hitting into a couple double plays that ended innings. It was just a matter of being in the wrong place and at the wrong time.”

The Lions (5-5) were able to strike first, and then provide the game’s first lead change in the first two innings, scoring a run in each of them to gain traction on an early 2-1 lead to control. But the Rams defense was able to buckle down for the next four innings, keeping the Wellsville offense shut down while their attack came to fruition beginning in the fourth.

With Bath-Haverling knocking at the door, they gave the wall around Wellsville’s lead a few cracks before eventually breaking through, tallying a four-run frame led by a pair of lead-off singles that would turn into runs, capitalizing on some key miscues by the Lions defense in the field to branch their lead even further.

After recording their last run in the bottom of the sixth, the Lions now found themselves in a 6-2 trench in their final at-bats. But Wellsville’s Cardiac Kids have done since the beginning of the season, they fought back with a vengeance. They would find a way to storm back by trimming their deficit down to one — the closest margin since the beginning stages of the battle, led by a heroic two-run triple by Alex Green. Adding help was Ty Vogel, who recorded another key RBI hit to complete the team’s three-run seventh.

But the Rams defense held in tough to keep Wellsville from scoring any further, as they conclude the day on the victorious side of the scoreboard.

The Lions totaled five runs across nine hits, with Vogel leading the bats with a 3-for-4 outing, and his RBI single. Cody Costello and Jere Havens each had two hits and scoring, with Costello adding in an RBI of his own.

On the mound, Havens found himself in a complete game duel with Bath-Haverling’s A.J. Brotz, as he went the distance by shelling out four strikeouts.

“We had one bad inning defensively, but Jere was on it again tonight,” Delahunt said. “It was really a pitcher’s duel for most of the way, and then we had a monster comeback. I give it up to my team, we were down by six at Canandaigua, and down by four tonight. We scored three big runs to give them a game with Alex coming through for us. If there was a fence, it would have been gone, and then Ty comes up and rips a single. If we keep fighting the way we are, we are going to be happy with how things turn out for us.”

Wellsville’s road trip will continue Saturday afternoon, as the prepare to take on Elmira in a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Hornell 2, Bolivar-Richburg 1

BOLIVAR — Just like the girls contest down the road in Richburg, Hornell and Bolivar-Richburg came together for yet another close affair on Thursday. Only this one was a bit closer.

Just three runs between both clubs would scratch across the plate, the first coming from the Red Raiders early on, as they held a 1-0 lead for much of the game. With the lead being pushed to a pair, a chance to provide some late pressure arose in the seventh for the host Wolverines.

Although they were able to cut their deficit to one, it would not be enough to full overcome in the end, as Hornell held on by the skin of their teeth to hand Bolivar-Richburg their first loss of the season, ending an eight-game win streak in the process with a 2-1 victory.

“Matt McKee threw really well and we played good defense behind him today,” Red Raiders coach Jake Kenney said. “I thought we battled better today at the plate against a good arm in (Landon) Danaher. We got two timely hits when we needed them, and we made some big defensive plays in crucial moments.”

Hornell garnered their runs in both the second and seventh innings to take a 2-0 lead on Bolivar-Richburg (8-1), with Wyatt Argentieri and Dominic Nasca combining to record five of the team’s six total hits, each earning an RBI hit to account for their runs being scored. Argentieri went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Red Raiders on the front line.

The Wolverines, despite being shut down all the way to the end, saw one final opportunity to strike against Hornell. In the bottom of the seventh, Trey Buchholz turned up the heat with a late RBI single to score Landon Danaher, cutting their deficit in half. But the arm of Gates Miller in relief was able to record the save behind a trio of strikeouts and just one walk to assist Hornell in coming away victorious.

“Both pitchers threw really well,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “Give Hornell credit, they did some small things right to get the runs in. We couldn’t take advantage of the opportunities that we had. It was well played both sides, and hopefully this is something that we can learn from to bounce back.”

The Wolverines also finished with six hits at the plate, with Cam MacDonell helping the cause with a double. On the rubber, Landon Danaher went the distance behind four strikeouts and two walks.

Bolivar-Richburg will head for Wellman Field in Friendship tonight for a 5 p.m. first pitch against host Friendship/Scio.

Cuba-Rushford 21, Andover/Whitesville 0 (F-5)

CUBA — Benson McCumiskey had the best of both worlds help the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford out in a big way, as he started the game with a bang at the plate while hold Andover/Whitesville to just a pair of hits across his complete game, setting up shop for what was a 21-0 home shutout in five innings on Thursday in Cuba.

From within the team’s 14-run first inning, McCumiskey had the biggest bat during the opening at-bats. While the Rebels (4-5) loaded up the bags behind the Andover/Whitesville defense, he would go on to unload them all with one swing of the bat, scoring three runs on a massive double that just missed leaving the field by inches for a grand slam. He would finish with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate and four total RBI.

On the mound, the Rebels hurler went the complete game, striking out nine and walking two to assist the defense in bouncing back after their 2-0 shutout to the hands of Fillmore, earlier this week. Helping the cause at the plate was Austin Pinney, who had two more hits and two RBI. Cuba-Rushford would total 21 runs off 12 hits.

Andover/Whitesville (1-4) was led by Aiden Meehan, who had one of the team’s two hits on a double, while Spencer Mattison singled. On the hill, Cormac Brown fanned four and walked two in his two innings of relief. The team will partake in tournament action beginning at 10 a.m. in Scio, taking on Hinsdale to open up.

As for Cuba-Rushford, they are off until Wednesday when they prepare to visit Bolivar-Richburg in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Fillmore 23, Friendship/Scio 4 (F-5)

FRIENDSHIP — A seven-run opening frame registered by the Eagles of Fillmore was one that saw them set the tone right from the get-go in their latest road trip on Thursday, as the offense struck all chords while Graham Cahill turned in a dominant performance on the mound to pace the team’s 23-4 victory in five innings over Friendship/Scio at Wellman Field in Friendship.

The Eagles collected their seventh win in their first eight games, moving to 7-1 on the season with a 23-run, 19-hit tenure on offense that made its impact right away in the opening frame, collecting a 7-0 lead on Friendship/Scio immediately and never looked back upon it, adding more cushioning along the way to secure the win.

Cahill helped keep Friendship/Scio (2-5) at a standstill for much of the evening on the mound, garnering the win with nine strikeouts and six walks before Luke Colombo came on in the fifth to strike out the side, ending the game. On offense, Alex Ellsworth had the big bat, going a perfect 4-for-4.

As for the hosts, Nick Sortore recorded two of the team’s five total hits, scoring a run along the way. On the mound, Landen Arnold struck out one and walked two in his three-inning start.

Both teams are back on the field with 5 p.m. contests tonight, as Fillmore returns home to host Hinsdale, while Friendship/Scio stays put in Friendship to welcome in the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 32, Hinsdale 3 (F-5)

BELMONT — It was an electrifying stand of offense that fueled the day for the Genesee Valley/Belfast JagDogs on Thursday, as they fought the chilly temperatures and some wind to put together a humongous 32-run, 17-hit effort at the plate, including a pair of 10-run innings to coast towards a 32-3 home win in five innings over visiting Hinsdale.

Carter Stout provided big things on both sides of the field for Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-6), garnering the win through two innings of work on the mound with five strikeouts, while providing some firepower at the plate along the way. He would help open up a massive 10-run first at-bats for the JagDogs with a three-run blast into the wind, leaving the field in a hurry for his first homer of the season.

Stout would finish 2-for-3 in the game, being one of multiple hitters to record at least a pair. Matt Weaver had the team’s biggest bat, going 4-for-5 with five RBI. Jesse Babbitt and Justin Hill each had three hits, with Babbitt recording a double and Hill driving in four more runs.

Hinsdale (0-4) was led by Damion Brown, who had an RBI single in the team’s three-run third inning. Jake Elliott added in the team’s second and final hit. On the mound, Xavier Pascucci struck out two and walked four through an inning’s work. The Bobcats will continue their road swing into Fillmore tonight with a 5 p.m. first pitch.

SOFTBALL

Bolivar-Richburg 5, Hornell 2

RICHBURG — Jessica Majot managed to keep Hornell on their heels for much of the game with her arm, despite some early pressure that was brought on. But on Thursday, the Lady Wolverines and their senior ace battled through it with a hot start and some key insurance pieces down the stretch, as they held off the Lady Red Raiders to remain unbeaten with a 5-2 home win.

“Jess threw a great game. She was able to keep the Hornell hitters off balance all night,” Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell said. “We had a few miscues tonight defensively, but were able to clean it up late in the game.”

A three-run opening stanza started the Lady Wolverines (6-0) off in the right direction, as they took the early lead with help from Majot at the plate, as she belted a big RBI double in the midst of the offensive effort. Not long after, the Lady Red Raiders applied some pressure themselves with some key special teams play, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning off some baserunning and errors by the Lady Wolverines defense to cut their deficit to one.

It would remain as such for the next three full innings before the Lady Wolverines started to find some insurance, scoring on errors by the Hornell defense themselves to ultimately branch their lead out far enough to keep the Lady Red Raiders out of reach in the end.

“We had two crucial errors that really hurt us,” said Lady Red Raiders coach Brian Dyring. “One in the first and one in the fifth. We have been really competitive with really good teams, but we have to clean up the defense and put more balls in play if we want to start winning these games.”

The Hornell offense was at a standstill for much of the game by Majot’s arm, as the senior fired away 15 strikeouts to pair with two walks in her twirled one-hitter for Bolivar-Richburg. Helping the bats out for the Lady Wolverines was Malayna Ayers, who led off the sixth inning with a triple, while McKinlee Harris had two hits.

On the other side, Jordan Dyring had Hornell’s lone hit off a single, while she struck out three in her complete game from within the circle on defense.

Bolivar-Richburg will get set to battle Section V, Class B power Williamson on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.

Hornell 020 000 0 – 2 1 4

Bolivar-Richburg 300 011 X – 5 5 3

B-R – Jessica Majot (WP) (CG, 15K, 2BB), and Madigan Harris.

Friendship/Scio 13, Fillmore 2

FRIENDSHIP — Host Friendship/Scio struck while the iron was hot right away against Fillmore on Thursday, capitalizing on their opening at-bats with an early lead to control. After the visiting Lady Eagles cut down their early deficit, the hosts found a way to branch their lead permanently with one swing.

That came from Nevaeh Ross, who continues to be a force on both sides for undefeated Friendship/Scio, as she broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third with a three-run blast that left the field in a hurry, extending their lead insurmountably along the way to set the table on a 13-2 rolling of the Lady Eagles to record their sixth straight victory to open the season.

Along with tallying two hits and three RBI total at the plate, Ross continued her dominance from within the circle for Friendship/Scio (6-0), as she held Fillmore in check for much of the contest behind 14 strikeouts and three walks.

It was a strong start out of the gate for the hosts, as they collected an early 3-0 lead keyed by special teams around the bases, scoring off their baserunning. After a scoreless second, the bats came alive in the third after Fillmore (4-5) cut their early deficit to one, as Ross blasted her three-run bomb to the outfield to break open a five-run frame for the offense, ultimately setting them apart from the Lady Eagles for good to secure the victory.

Adding help at the plate was Claire Calhoun, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Morghyn Ross, Jadeyn Shields, Kiara Grover and Grace Drumm all had a hit to add in for a Friendship/Scio effort that tallied nine hits in all.

On the other side, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore scored two runs off six hits, with Lizzy Nugent and Torann Wolfer each providing a pair, with Wolfer including a ground-rule double. In the circle, Saige Friedl fanned three and walked 11 in her complete game. Fillmore will return home to host Geneseo on Monday in a 7 p.m. first pitch.

Friendship/Scio will head for Scio to host tournament action beginning Saturday morning in a 10 a.m. first pitch, as they open up with a first round matchup against Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 35, Hinsdale 20

WELLSVILLE — Caden Miller was able to fire off the medalist round for the Bobcats of Hinsdale in the conclusion of their home-at-home set with Genesee Valley/Belfast on Thursday, but an even balance up and down the JagDogs scorecard was what paced their way towards the sweep of the Bobcats, as they rolled toward a 35-20 win at the Wellsville Country Club.

Leading the way for Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-4) was Dakota Hemphill, who was not far behind Miller for the top spot, as he garned a team-low round of 57. Will Guilford followed suit with a round of 60. Zach Davis provided a 64, while Deric Grantier and Chris Weaver rounded off the card with rounds of 66 and 67, respectively.
