Wednesday Sectionals: Down three, Delahunt sends No. 3 Lions to Class B2 Semis with walk-off three-run nuke to finish off 6-5 comeback win
WELLSVILLE — They’ve been stuck in the trenches for almost the entire game. In order to have a chance to move onto the Semifinal round, the second-seeded Lions of Wellsville would have to find a way to dig their way out, as time began to go against the hosts one granule at a time.
Although Wellsville was in a three-run hole, they were still within a stone’s throw of turning the game on its head. When the bottom of the seventh inning approached, so did the team’s final at-bats for what could be their very last stand of the year. After a mass of errors committed by the Mynderse defense, one of the most ideal situations for the hosts arose — the potential game-tying runs were aboard, with the pressure mounting by the second.
In the on-deck circle awaited Brayden Delahunt, who was asked a very straightforward question from his head coach, Marc Agnello.
“Hey Brayden, you ready?”. The senior’s response? — “Yes sir.”
With the seventh-seeded Blue Devils looking to end it despite their miscues on defense, the Lions senior went ahead and ended the game once and for all with a single swing of his stick, annihilating a big ball from the left-handed batter’s box to deep left center field. The ball continued to carry until it was no longer housed within the diamond, detonating a season-saving, walk-off three-run nuke to send the Wellsville crowd and dugout into sheer madness to complete their miraculous comeback, marching toward the Class B2 Semifinal round with a 6-5 home win over the Blue Devils.
“It was absolute bedlam. This was a testament to our guys, and they controlled their own destiny to the end,” Agnello said. “We never say die, and the main thing is we never gave up. This group is a bunch of grinders, and I’ve preached since day one that we have to put together and play all seven innings. We’re tied at two in the game early, and we had a lot of bumpy things happen since then. I told them to keep grinding and never give up. I said that their season hinges on the last at-bats, and to embrace that moment at the plate. I asked Brayden if he was ready on the on-deck circle, he said he was, and he ended the game for us. It was absolutely incredible to see all of that unfold.”
Before all of the endgame hysterics came to fruition for the Lions, they had to fight back like there was no tomorrow. Right from the beginning, they were coerced by the Blue Devils in their first at-bats, with all three lead-off batters reaching to load up the bases behind Logan Dunbar and the defense, eventually capitalizing on smallball tactics courtesy of a bunt to the left side of the infield to take the 1-0 early lead.
Wellsville (9-4) would provide a response of their own by doubling-up Mynderse in the first inning after back-to-back walks were issued to both Alex Ordiway and Liam McKinley to being their stint of offense. Alex Green and Cody Costello would provide the RBIs necessary to tie, and then, swipe the lead away out of the hands of the Blue Devils, with Green knotting the game off a sacrifice fly to deep left field to plate Ordiway from third, while Costello beat out the streaking Mynderse pitcher toward first base in a footrace to the bag to record an infield hit, scoring McKinley to take the lead.
Both teams would exchange a quick stand of defense in the second inning before the Blue Devils ran the table in the top of third, taking advantage of what they could find at the plate, led by back-to-back walks to set up shop for a Thomas Santana jab into center field to tie the game at two. Mynderse would go on to score three more hefty pieces of early insurance to build on their lead using their legs to work their way around the bases off key miscues by the Wellsville defense to take a 5-2 lead they would hold for the majority of the game.
Perhaps the best chance for the Lions to dig out of their hole came with a pair of runners on base with one out in the bottom of the third, after the Blue Devils finished their four-spot of offense. But the visitors in navy blue remained vigilant to keep the Lions at bay with back-to-back strikeouts to end the stand, continuing to keep the offense idle.
But the wait to get back on the board would soon reach its end. After an array of zeroes were dealt across the board, Wellsville ended it all with Delahunt’s three-run mash off the school in left center field, powered by numerous Mynderse errors in the field, to finish off the comeback victory of the season and advance one step closer to the Finals.
The home run was Delahunt’s second of the season, and one of four total hits the Lions scoured at the plate. Costello led the sticks with two of those hits, including his RBI single back in the first inning.
After saving their second season, Wellsville will now get the opportunity to host their Class B2 Semifinal matchup, which will take place Friday night in the Lion’s Den, where they will host either No. 6 Williamson or No. 3 Bath-Haverling for a chance to advance into next week’s Finals. Williamson and Bath-Haverling will settle the score this evening in Bath after inclement weather pushed the game forward from Wednesday.
Friday’s first pitch in the Lion’s Den is set tentatively at 5 p.m.

Class C2 Quarterfinals
No. 4 Bolivar-Richburg 8, No. 12 Letchworth 1
BOLIVAR — Like their first round matchup against Byron-Bergen to open up their Sectional trek back on Monday, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg once again built a fast start, this time against No. 12 Letchworth, scoring four of the eight runs in the first two innings before extending upon it later on to keep their lead in tact for good to move on to the Class C2 Semifinal round after an 8-1 victory over the Indians, Wednesday night.
“Everything came together tonight, and it was an all around team effort,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “It seemed like every facet was clicking. The dugout was giving us tons of energy tonight, and that helped Landon (Danaher) and Trey (Buchholz) throw great games on defense. The defense continued to stay strong, and they put together another clean game. The bats soon came alive after that, which we knew we were capable of. Everyone did it well, and it got us this win.”
Three different hitters for the Wolverines (13-4) collected at least a pair of hits at the plate, as the team started quick with a 3-0 lead on Letchworth to crack the ice. The Indians would remain within distance after posting their first run in the top of the third, but would then immediately turn up the head with their biggest stand of the game in the fourth.
After a pitching change from Landon Danaher to Trey Buchholz with the bases jammed, Bolivar-Richburg found their way out of it with Caden Allen fielding a sacrifice fly in his direction in right field, making a massive throw to Brayden Ellis at home plate to record the 9-2 double play to end the inning, and leave Letchworth hanging on the bases without a run to be scored.
As a result, the Wolverines pounded together the bats with their biggest stint of offense — a four-run fourth led by a two-run double off the bat of Buchholz, grounding their lead insurmountably to clinch victory.
Danaher had the big bat on offense, as well as the victory on the mound, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles while striking out one and walking four in his start on the rubber. In turn on offense, Allen provided two hits of his own, while Wayne Karnuth also chipped in with his two hits. Ellis recorded a pair of RBI to help the cause.
After No. 8 Campbell-Savona took down top-seeded Oakfield-Alabama in the upper portion of Bolivar-Richburg’s bracket, the Wolverines have been awarded a Class C2 Semifinal home game Friday night, as they now host the Panthers for a chance to advance into next week’s Finals.
First pitch between the Panthers and Wolverines has been tentatively set for 5 p.m. in Bolivar.

Class D1 Quarterfinals
No. 5 Fillmore 8, No. 4 C.G. Finney 2
PENFIELD — Three scoreless innings were dealt between both No. 5 Fillmore and No. 4 C.G. Finney to start their days on Wednesday. But a momentum shift would occur in the back half of their Class D1 Quarterfinal meeting in Penfield, as the Eagles bats began to click with seven of their eight total runs coming consecutively without a response, building a cushion to keep them in front for good in an 8-2 victory that sends them to the Semifinal round.
While the offense began to come full circle at the plate, the defense was propelled by five shutout innings tossed by Connor Potter for the Eagles (11-4). The Fillmore ace was untouchable, providing 11 big strikeouts and only issuing one walk to C.G. Finney during his start on the hill, before Aaron Buck came on in relief to pick up where he left off to secure the win on defense, holding the Falcons to just three hits all game.
As for the offensive counterattack, the Eagles scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth, right before tacking on a pair of three-run frames to branch their lead out to seven, with four different batters recording a pair of hits each to fuel the sticks. Aiden Wagner, Mitch Ward, Graham Cahill and Alex Ellsworth all had the hits to record, with Wagner and Cahill driving in a pair of runs in the process.
Fillmore now moves into the Class D1 Semifinal round, which will begin Friday night when they take a road trip to visit No. 1 Keshequa to battle for a spot in next week’s Finals.
First pitch in Nunda is slated for a tentative 7 p.m. start.

No. 1 Keshequa 14, No. 9 Genesee Valley 0
NUNDA — Top-seeded Keshequa capitalized on the majority of the opportunities that came their way, Wednesday night. Out of the 14 total runs pasted on the scoreboard, the Indians scored 11 right in the first inning of play to set the tone almost immediately, as they eliminated No. 9 Genesee Valley from contention with a 14-0 shutout under the lights in their Class D1 Quarterfinal matchup.
“We hit the ball, but it was right at them,” said Jaguars coach Kevin Scott. “We’re a young team, and at the end of the season, we had one senior on the field. The younger kids will have a great future ahead for us. This season was especially tough because of COVID, which had to force a shutdown on our season for two weeks. But despite that, we had a lot of fight tonight, and we never gave up even after falling behind in the first.”
Keshequa used a mixed bag of offense and miscus by the Jaguars (3-10) in the field to score 11 runs right from the get-go, setting the bar right away on a lead they would never lose. Overall, Genesee Valley was held to just a single hit at the plate by the top seeds, with Max Wedge recording the hit off a single.
On the mound, Christian Tuttle provided a fine relief appearance on the rubber, striking out five and walking two to finish off the season.
The Jaguars season is now over, as they wrap up their shortened 2021 campaign with a record of 3-10.
Genesee Valley 0 00 000 0 – 0 1 7

Class D2 Quarterfinals
No. 3 Friendship/Scio 3, No. 6 Elba 1
SCIO — A pitcher’s duel began brewing between Elba’s Andrew Hare and Friendship/Scio’s Cam Loucks. Between them, just four hits allowed across the board. Through the first five innings, just one.
With a 1-1 tie in the sixth, it came time for the Golden Eagles to provide a response after Elba tied the game in the top half. After continuously being held without a single hit at the plate by Hare and the Lancers, the three-seeds made sure it was better late than never.
Loucks, Ian Romero and Cory Bolzan were responsible for Friendship/Scio’s game-changing inning, as they recorded all three of the team’s hits on offense in the bottom of the sixth, which saw them score a pair of go-ahead runs along the way, as they ripped the lead out of the hands of Elba for good to eliminate them in the Class D2 Quarterfinal round by a 3-1 count to move into Friday’s Semifinals.
“This was a great game to be a part of. Both pitchers pitched great, and both teams played great defense,” Golden Eagles co-coach Kevin Mole said. “Their kid threw hard and he was tough all night. We didn’t get our hits until the sixth inning, so it was a pitcher’s duel to the end. That three batter stretch was the only time that we were able to get to him the whole time. It was right when we needed it most too.”
The Golden Eagles (10-3) were the first to strike with a run coming in the bottom of the second. From that point, the pitcher’s duel continued to ensue all the way to the sixth inning, when Elba managed to tie the game with a big run of their own behind a Connor Scott RBI single. But the tie would not last long at all, as the Golden Eagles broke it up immediately after in the bottom half with Loucks and Bolzan dishing out big RBI hits, with Bolzan finding the deep portion of the outfield on a double to break the tie.
Loucks followed suit by scoring Bolzan on a blooper into shallow right field, providing a piece of insurance to carry into the seventh, where a massive John Outman diving catch on a long drive by the Lancers to the outfield saved the game, and sealed the eventual victory.
Loucks was deemed the winner of the pitcher’s duel over Hare, who had handed out 14 chairs for Elba to go with three walks, as the Scio senior dished out five strikeouts of his own to go with three walks.
Friendship/Scio will now hit the road for Class D2 Semifinal action beginning on Friday, as they get set to take on No. 2 Northstar at Grace and Truth Sports Park in Hilton. First pitch has yet to be determined.
Elba 000 001 0 – 1 1 0
Friendship/Scio 010 002 X – 3 3 0

No. 4 Belfast 11, No. 5 Jasper-Troupsburg 9
BELFAST — The Wildcats and Bulldogs saw a wild affair come to fruition under the lights in Belfast on Wednesday. Between the two clubs, 14 total runs in the first three innings of play were scratched across the plate.
As far as the most impactful stretch of offense? Try the bottom of the second inning belonging to the fourth-seeded Bulldogs, as they scored a four-run frame to rip away a 4-2 lead from Jasper-Troupsburg ultimately for good, as they survived a back-and-forth exchange of offense to successfully hold down the fort in their 11-9 edging of the fifth-seeded Wildcats at the Rich Sullivan Complex.
“That was a big comeback win tonight. They had us down early, but the boys didn’t hang their head about it,” Bulldogs coach Derek Kenyon said. “We rode the big man (Struckmann) to victory, and Q stepped up big tonight on both sides. That’s what Seniors are supposed to do, especially at this stage of the game. I couldn’t be more proud of how we hit the ball. We matched up really well with J-T, and I don’t think they get enough credit for how well they really played alongside us tonight.”
With the Wildcats leading by a pair heading into Belfast’s (9-5) biggest inning of the night, the bats were at the ready to make it all happen, as the Bulldogs accounted for four big runs to take the lead away for good, three of them coming off of Matt Weaver’s three-run blast to spring the hosts in red and black ahead.
Despite the home run, Jasper-Troupsburg continued to chip away at Belfast’s one-run lead after just over three innings of work. But then, the game saw an early dagger off the bat of Stephen Struckmann, who pulverized a deep ball to the outfield, sending a three-run missile into orbit to branch their lead back out to four. From that point, Belfast would hold off Jasper-Troupsburg through a wave of back-and-forth trades on offense that did not see their lead become extinguished.
Along with his massive three-run homer, Struckmann in turn went all seven innings on the mound for the Bulldogs, providing a solid performance of nine strikeouts and one walk to tally the win. The Belfast pitcher, along with Weaver, were two of four Bulldogs that recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Garrett Miller and Carter Stout each chipped in with two hits, with Stout pounding a double along the way.
Belfast will now head back into Class D2 Semifinal action beginning Friday night, as they now head to visit top-seeded Avoca/Prattsburgh to settle the score on a berth in next week’s Finals. First pitch is tentatively slated for a 5 p.m. start in Avoca.

Hinsdale’s shortened 2021 season came to a close officially, as they wrap up the campaign with a record of 2-12 overall.

Stats and a complete box score were not made available upon publication.
Andover’s season has officially met its end, as they wrap up the shortened 2021 season with a record of 4-9.

Class D1 Quarterfinals
No. 2 Notre Dame-Batavia 7, No. 7 Fillmore 4
BATAVIA — Although the seventh-seeded Lady Eagles of Fillmore got off to an ideal start to their Quarterfinal bout with No. 2 Notre Dame-Batavia, the Lady Irish would find a way to bring it all together.
After some early zeroes were dealt between the two foes, the offense began to click for the two-seeds, as they accounted for six runs right in a row to take the lead away from Fillmore and then some, rolling away toward the winner’s circle to eliminate the Lady Eagles with a 7-4 edging in their Class D1 Quarterfinal battle on Wednesday at Genesee Community College.
“We gave it a pretty good shot, and thought we gave a very good team a tough one,” Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley said. “Their pitchers mix it a lot, and it was tough for us to get comfortable. A few too many strikeouts and a few unearned runs, but a good team makes you do that. I am very proud of the team. They grew a lot this year and I hope all the returners realized they are a pretty solid group. Our two seniors in Harley (Miller) and Kirstin (Frazier) deserve a lot of credit for leading us through an up and down, all around year. Their dependability and consistency were the perfect ingredients to carry us.”
The first inning was Miller Time for the Lady Eagles (7-6), as Preslee Miller started off the first stint of offense with a bang, sending a two-run home run out of play to get Fillmore off and running with the early lead. It was held until the Lady Irish saw their offense begin to click, scoring a three-run bottom of third inning to take the lead away for good.
But it went without a tad more pressure applied by the Lady Eagles, who saw Sadie Wolcott deliver a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the sixth to cut away at Notre Dame-Batavia’s lead, but in the end, it was too much to overcome as the Lady Irish ended their season.
Kirstin Frazier provided one strikeout and five walks in her complete game, six-hit performance for the Lady Eagles. At the plate, she was one of four batters that recorded at least a hit, with Torann Wolfer, Kada Frazier and Emily Krzeminski each posting singles.
The Lady Eagles season is officially over, as their shortened 2021 campaign concludes with an overall record of 7-6.

Class D2 Quarterfinals
No. 2 Northstar 10, No. 7 Whitesville 5
ROCHESTER — The seventh-seeded Lady Jays of Whitesville had to battle their way back into their Quarterfinal contest over the road on Wednesday, finding their way toward a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning. But No. 2 Northstar had one final card to play in the shape of a six-run bottom half of the frame, using a mixed bag of offense and miscues by the Whitesville defense to pull away toward victory by a 10-5 count.
Northstar garnered the day’s first lead after the opening frame, striking while the iron was hot with four runs in the bottom half of the first to take away Whitesville’s (4-10) early lead. After exchanging a pair of shutout innings, the Lady Jays were able to find a way to tie the game up at four with Rachel Jackson providing a big game-tying two-run homer from within her three-hit day at the plate, deadlocking the contest at four.
Jackson would finish with a team-leading 3-for-4 outing at the plate with two runs scored to pace the Whitesville bats.
But the tie would soon be broken in the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Knights pushed their chips to the center of the table, scoring six unanswered runs to pull ahead permanently to put an end to Whitesville’s season.
Zoey Lee was superb from within the circle for the Lady Jays, allowing just six hits behind seven strikeouts and three walks. On offense, Jessica Erdmann tallied two hits of her own, scoring twice in the process.
Whitesville’s season is officially in the books, as they wrap their shortened 2021 campaign with a 4-10 record.

No. 6 Elba 11, No. 3 Belfast 1
BELFAST — The sixth-seeded Lady Lancers of Elba took complete control of everything that went in their direction, as they posted 11 straight runs with five of them coming in the top of the sixth to seal the deal on a trip to the Class D2 Semifinal round, knocking off No. 3 Belfast in upset fashion by an 11-1 count on Wednesday.
The Lady Bulldogs were held runless for much of the evening by Elba, as the Lady Lancers got to work on the offensive side of the spectrum by scoring a 4-0 lead after the first three innings, and later, a five-run sixth to virtually seal the victory for good in the end. But the shutout would wind up being lost, with Harley Proctor belting an RBI double to the outfield to score Belfast’s (8-6) first and only run of the game.
Proctor, along with Alicia Borden, both led the Lady Bulldogs bats by recording two hits each. In the circle, Emma Sullivan handed out six chairs and walked three in her tossed complete game.
The season is over for Belfast, as they wrap up their shortened 2021 campaign with an 8-6 record overall.

BOYS TENNIS
Wellsville, Fillmore boys victorious in first round, Scio falls at A/P
WELLSVILLE/HOUGHTON/PRATTSBURGH — Despite some rain in the forecast to start tennis Sectionals from across the area, it would not cool off Wellsville and Fillmore, as both the Lions and Eagles started their second seasons off strong, with Wellsville recording a 5-0 shutout on Attica in Class C1 action, while Fillmore snuck past Alfred-Almond at home by a 3-2 count in Class D2 action.

At third singles, Matt Bittel had to fight his way through a second-set tiebreak, which was won, to seal up a 6-2, 7-5 triumph. At doubles, the teams of Ian Iantorno and Jake Schrlau, and Ryan Carlton and Ryan Haggerty completed the match sweep with straight set victories at first and second doubles.
Down the road in Fillmore, the Eagles remained red hot with their ninth straight victory on the court, as they stood their ground to advance further into the Class D2 Tournament field with a 3-2 edging over visiting Alfred-Almond at Houghton College.

Carter Sisson came away victorious at second singles, posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory. At first doubles, the team of Zach Herring and Colby Wolfer battled through an up-and-down match which saw a pair of blanks being traded, ultimately finishing with a 6-4 third set going in their favor to lock down the match victory.
As for the Tigers of Scio, their season came to a close after they were shutout by Avoca/Prattsburgh in Class D2 Tournament action by a 4-0 count. Despite the loss, the Tigers saw a great amount of poise from the second doubles team of Austin Gowdy and Brenden Loucks, who fought tooth and nail through three sets of tiebreaks with Avoca/Prattsburgh, but could not come out on top with the overall victory in the end.
Wellsville and Fillmore have officially moved on to the Quarterfinal stage of Team Sectionals, where their next match in the Class C1 and D2 Tournament is not known at this time.
