Tuesday Sectionals: Majot twirls no-hit performance to assist with No. 3 B-R’s fiery start in 14-0 shutout over No. 14 Pavilion; No. 12 C-R downed by No. 5 York on road

RICHBURG — The fast start is an element to the game that ideally every team would like to capitalize on right from the beginning. For the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, it was one that saw them immediately put the hammer down on No. 14 Pavilion, and then some.

As an added bonus: While the offense was dotting all of the I’s at the plate, Jessica Majot was crossing all of the T’s inside the circle.

The Lady Wolverines senior ace was unstoppable all night long while under command, as she allowed only three Lady Golden Gopher baserunners to reach across all seven innings of her complete game, all via walk, striking out 16 hitters to record a brilliant start to Bolivar-Richburg’s trek in the Class C2 Tournament, no-hitting Pavilion in their 14-0 shutout on Tuesday.

“Jess did a great job of mixing her speed and hitting her spots all game,” said Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell. “She has worked very hard this season on improving her game and her mechanics, and it’s really nice to see all of that pay off for her.”

While Majot delivered her dominating performance from the middle of the infield, the Lady Wolverines (13-3) on the counterattack, got off to the start they wanted at the plate, compiling 14 total runs off 13 hits, with 11 of those runs coming right in the first inning of play. The fireworks were ignited when Bolivar-Richburg loaded the bases quick on their first three-at bats, with their first run coming on a bases-loaded walk being issued to Kelsey Pacer.

Later on, the bases would be cleared on Jianna Nix’s big hit — a two-run single into the outfield to extend upon their early lead. Capping it off as the inning progressed, were a pair of back-to-back RBI hits from Kayli Giardini and McKinlee Harris, with Harris belting a big triple to break the game open even further, ultimately to an 11-0 lead that they never lost.

From that point forward, the rest of the game was on the shoulders of Majot, who struck out one Pavilion batter after another to keep them at bay without a hit. The Lady Wolverines would go on to add three more pieces of insurance, including a run in the bottom of the fourth inning propelled by a solo inside-the-park home run by Nix, who had three hits in all to lead the bats for the hosts in gray and red.

McKinlee Harris also had three hits, going 3-for-5 with her RBI triple, and three runs scored. Madigan Harris added in two hits of her own, while Malayna Ayers provided a double. In addition, Raina Bowen and Kaitlyn Graves each added a hit to help further the cause.

The Lady Wolverines have now moved into the Class D2 Quarterfinal round, where they now take on No. 6 Caledonia-Mumford back on their home turf Thursday night, with first pitch tentatively slated for a 5 p.m. start.

No. 5 York 10, No. 12 Cuba-Rushford 4

RETSOF — Along with Bolivar-Richburg, the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford also got their second season kicked off in Class C2 Tournament play on Tuesday against another Golden team — that being the No. 5 York Lady Golden Knights.

Right away, the Lady Rebels did not waste any time getting on the board first to break the ice in the opening frame. With the lead in hand, it now gave a chance for York to provide a response. They would go on, and do just that.

And much more.

The bats would come alive for the Lady Golden Knights in the first three innings of play, as they took the lead away from the Lady Rebels for good with two go-ahead runs in the opening frame before a massive two-run blast off the bat of Anna Lynes broke the game wide open, as the five-seeds went on to roll past Cuba-Rushford with a 10-4 victory, ending the season for the Lady Rebels.

“We started the season rough, but I feel the girls did a great job this season, especially when it seemed like everything was brand new,” said Lady Rebels coach Diana Joseph. “No matter the score or who we played, the girls stayed positive all season. They all worked hard, and I’m excited to see what we can bring back to the table for next year. I will miss the Seniors who are leaving us.”

Despite losing the lead they had built to begin the night, Cuba-Rushford (5-11) saw Hunter Jahnke lace a two-out RBI triple to the outfield to bring in Elysa Tylor to crack open the scoring in the first. The Lady Rebels would not find home plate again until the late stages of the seventh inning during their final at-bats, as York went on to score the next 10 unanswered runs to pull away for good.

The Lady Rebels scored three final runs, led by an RBI triple off the bat of Tylor, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Tylor was one of three hitters that recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate, with Jahnke and Tara Duvall each providing two hits of their own.

In the circle, Sydney Howard recorded four strikeouts and walked seven in her tossed complete game.

Cuba-Rushford’s season has come to a close, as they wrap the shortened 2021 season with an overall record of 5-11.
