BASEBALL

Fillmore 9, Belfast 6

FILLMORE — The Bulldogs were able to scratch across a first inning lead on host Fillmore, as well as a big threat in the seventh to put some pressure on. But the offense was able to click for the Eagles at the right time, as they took away Belfast’s early lead and made it their own to put toward what was a 9-6 victory on Wednesday.

“This was a tough game, and Belfast played well,” Eagles coach Bill Nolan said. “There was no easy time for either side, but it was a lot of fun. You see mistakes and it can kill you, but you put it all into perspective, it was a close game. Belfast fired up that last inning to make it close after we led 9-4, and they got two runs with two runners on. This was a game that got interesting as it went on. Belfast has a great team, and they played hard today.”

Both teams in the early-going exchanged lead changes through the third inning, with the Eagles (4-2) ultimately coming out on top with a 3-2 lead on the Bulldogs. After Fillmore docked a blank against Belfast on defense, the offense kicked into gear with a three-run fourth inning to branch out their lead to an insurmountable amount to stay out in front, despite some late pressure from the Bulldogs in the end.

Three different Eagles all recorded three hits, as Aiden Wagner, Brent Zubikowski and Connor Potter were all responsible with a trio of singles. On the hill, Zach Sisson picked up the win behind two innings of solid relief, fanning six and walking two. On the other side, the Bulldogs (3-3) were led by both of their pitchers in the contest — Stephen Struckmann and Carter Stout, as they each picked up two hits. On the mound, Struckmann fanned three and walked three in his five-inning start.

Both teams are back in action Friday night, as Fillmore stands pat at home to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg for their second and final clash of the season with first pitch slated for a 5 p.m. start, while Belfast looks to rebound back over the road in Andover at 6 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 8, Hinsdale 3

CUBA — It was an early jump that Hinsdale connected on behind some key baserunning, but a short time later, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford shook off some early game rust with a massive third inning of offense, scoring five key runs to rally back and finish with seven unanswered runs in their 8-3 home win over the Bobcats, Wednesday night.

The Rebels (5-3) started off with an early 1-0 lead before Hinsdale found their groove around the bases a half inning later, managing to score three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Bobcats would hold the lead right up until the bottom of the third, when the offense for Cuba-Rushford brought their bats together with five big runs to jump ahead for good behind seven unanswered runs.

Benson McCumiskey picked up the win on the rubber, striking out seven and walking seven in his five-inning start, as he combined with Trent Chamberlain to hold the Bobcats to just one hit at the plate in his victory. At the plate, It was Caden Granger that led the way with a triple, double and two RBIs. McCumiskey would chip in a pair of RBI of his own off two hits. For Hinsdale (0-5), Sam Cashimere fanned two and walked one in his five-inning start. Xavier Pascucci provided the team’s lone hit off a double.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 4, Portville 3

WELLSVILLE — The lights were on at Tullar Field on Wednesday for the Lady Lions of Wellsville, as they faced one of their toughest challenges of the season with a Section VI powerhouse in town for a visit — the Lady Panthers of Portville.

The Lady Panthers and Lady Lions put together a battle that went until the end. The question that needed an answer — who would have the faster start. After the first inning, Portville was able to clinch it but Wellsville bounced back by jumping ahead with a three-run second inning, as they used their defense to lock down the win by a narrow 4-3 count.

“It was nice to see how our players responded to some pressure situations,” Lady Lions coach Matt Burke said. “We swung the bats well, and Portville made some really nice plays on defense. They are a very good team.”

After a 2-1 lead was garnered to start the game in the first inning for Portville, the Lady Lions (12-1) buckled down on defense to keep the Lady Panthers at bay, as they responded with a three-run frame in the second to pull ahead with Mallory Sibble and Maddie Spicer providing two big hits, with Sibble driving in two runs on a single, while Spicer scored Sibble on an RBI-single of her own to take the lead. Both Sibble and Spicer led the Wellsville bats with two hits each.

Portville was able to add one more run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Lions defense was able to maintain their ground to keep their lead in tact for the win. Makenzie Cowburn remained undefeated on the season in the circle with a six-strikeout, three-walk performance in her seventh win. Adding help at the plate were Brazen Beckwith and Carly Young with a hit and run scored each, while both Lauren Cicirello and Matti Burke had a hit to chip in.

In all, Wellsville accounted for four runs off eight total hits at the plate.

The Lady Lions are back on the road Saturday afternoon, as they pay a visit to Our Lady of Mercy in a 3 p.m. first pitch.
