Tuesday Roundup: Addison, B-R engage in back-and-forth duel, but Lady Wolverines open floodgates behind eight-run 6th to pull away with 9-0 home win
RICHBURG — On a quiet Tuesday night around the area, the spotlight was on Richburg for a Class C battle that was well worth the price of admission. The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg and Lady Knights of Addison were in a dead heat through the majority of their defensive clash. While the defense took over, the bats remained silent as each team took turns chipping away.
Four shutout innings were traded between both squads, with just a single hit combined. But then, the Lady Wolverines provided a tremor with the game’s first run in the bottom of the fifth, buckling into the driver’s seat with the lead.
Then, the earthquake.
Up 1-0, the Lady Wolverines took control of their own destiny and in a massive way, providing a devastating offensive detonation with eight runs off eight hits, including the inning’s biggest launch — a three-run blast from the bat of McKinlee Harris, as Bolivar-Richburg rolled away after a teeter-totter battle with Addison to earn their fifth straight win by a 9-0 count.
“Addison is a well-coached team. Both teams came ready to play, and that showed in the first few innings,” said Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell. “As a team, we want to keep hanging around and being competitive in close games, and I think our team has done that really well so far this season. I’m very proud of how our hitting has come along. There were a few girls who have really made changes to their swings, and it’s nice to see that they are seeing those pay off.”
Before the late fireworks display took full effect, Bolivar-Richburg (7-1) had to weave their way through a defensive duel with Addison through the first half of the battle. After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Knights provided the game’s first threat in the following inning, placing runners on the corners with two outs on the board. After a conversation in the circle, Lady Wolverines ace Jessica Majot rebounded to get her team off the field with a strikeout — one of 12 she had in her complete game, one-hit gem.
Despite the boost of momentum, Addison was able to get off the field themselves quickly in the bottom half with a rapid 1-2-3 of the Lady Wolverines. The rapid defensive stands carried into the third with Bolivar-Richburg providing one of their own, but could not capitalize on the opportunity on the other side.
The scoreless trend carried into the fourth, as each team received a runner on base with one out on the board, but could not find a way to scratch across the run to break the ice.
In the fifth inning, Bolivar-Richburg cracked through. With lead off singles into the outfield from Paityn Johnston and Kayli Giardini, McKinlee Harris brought out the hardware with an RBI double to the right center field fence that scored Johnston, assuming full control heading into the final two innings of play.
Right after they got on the board, the Lady Wolverines were quick to get off the field to keep the momentum rolling. Even though Addison nearly found a way to bring in the game-tying run on a heavily cranked shot up the middle. But it was halted by a miraculous diving play by Malayna Ayers at shortstop — perhaps the biggest play of the game, as she extended her glove to the bag to record the out on the lead runner, which would set up their exit from the field.
It was a play that provided energy for their bats on the counter-attack, according to Lovell.
“The bottom of the order sparked us with some big timely hits, and that play from Malayna at short. That was a great play from her,” she said. “We talk a lot as a team about maintaining a high level of energy no matter what. That can be hard to do sometimes, but plays like that definitely make it easier to do.”
Did it ever.
The offensive attack for the Lady Wolverines came to fruition after Ayers’ provided the defensive spark to ignite the fire, as she was later rewarded with the team’s first of many hits in the bottom of the sixth — a humongous double down the left field line that scored Majot, who reached on a lead-off walk, to branch their lead to a pair.
The advantage grew tremendously thereafter, as the team recorded eight total runs off eight hits, with Jianna Nix and Braelin Bentley delivering back-to-back RBIs, and Paityn Johnston adding to it with a two-run single of her own into right field. The lead sprouted from six to nine after the Lady Wolverines garnered one final explosion off the bat of Harris and her three-run homer, sending her bomb to deep left field to give the hosts all the room they needed to finish off the late runaway victory.
All eight runs for the Lady Wolverines were scored with no outs.
Harris was one of three batters that recorded at least a pair of hits, going 3-for-4 with four total RBI. Johnston finished with two hits to go with her two RBI, and two runs scored. Kayli Giardini finished with two hits, while Ayers and Bentley concluded with an RBI double each.
Bolivar-Richburg has reached the halfway point to their season, winning five straight games behind a 7-1 record — a start that Lovell admits, wasn’t sure was possible at the beginning of her first official season coaching the Lady Wolverines.
“To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure how the beginning of the season was going to play out,” she said. “Adjusting to a new coach can be difficult sometimes, and I think the girls have done a really great job of embracing the changes that we continue to make. They keep working to give it their all, and they work hard every time. Hopefully, we can continue our momentum as the season winds down.”
The Lady Wolverines now enter the back half of their slate, which begins on Friday back on their home turf, as they now prepare to go for their sixth straight victory with a 5 p.m. Division I battle with the Lady Eagles of Fillmore.
The hope for Lovell as her team hits the homestretch?
“We are hoping to finish the season strong and peak at the right time. Our team is going to keep working towards our goals while we have fun doing it.”

Hornell sweeps over the road at Wellsville, Lions grab 10 total wins
WELLSVILLE — Tuesday night marked the start of back-to-back meets at home for the Lions of Wellsville, as they kicked off the festivities by welcoming in a longtime rival to do battle — the Red Raiders of Hornell.
In all, Wellsville gathered 10 total victories, seven of them individually, but it was a meet that belonged to Hornell in the end, as the Red Raiders swept the action across the board behind multiple first place finishes, allowing them to pick up the win in both the boys and girls divisions with 73-54, and 98-41 wins over the Lions, respectively.
On the boys side, Wellsville collected seven first place finishes to keep pace with Hornell, two of them by Wyatt Scott who led the way behind his sweep of the hurdling events, racing toward gold in the 110 (19.92) and 400 hurdles (1:09.20). Adding wins on the track were Gavin Dickerson and Ben Jordan in the distance events, with Dickerson placing first in the 800 sprint (2:33.32) and Jordan medaling in the 1600 run (5:33.80). Eli Brophy had the last individual win for the hosts, garnering a winning distance in the triple jump (25-8.5).
The Lions would add two relay victories, with all four individual winners all racing legs between the events, as the team of Dickerson, Scott, Shane Davidson and Joey Mariotti came away winners in the 1600 relay (4:29.89), while the team of Jordan, Brophy, Noah Joslyn and Riley Allen came up with a winning 13:08.32 time in the 3200 relay.
On the girls side, Alyssa Dorrough provided the sweep of the throwing events for the Lady Lions, as she garnered winning distances on both the shot put (27-9.75), and discus (71-7) to lead the way. Dorrough also ran the second leg of the team’s lone relay win — a 56.74 medaling time in the 400 relay alongside Harmony Brantley, Carina Kling and Brooklyn Stisser.
Wellsville will return to the track with a quick turnaround tonight, as they host both Cuba-Rushford and Fillmore in a 5 p.m. tri-meet inside the Lion’s Den.
