Wednesday Roundup: Lions get on the board, but unbeaten Livonia rolls past Wellsville at home with 56-6 victory

LIVONIA — The Lions were able to get their offense on the scoreboard in the game’s early-going on Tuesday over the road in Livonia, but the unbeaten Bulldogs showed why they were unbeaten, as they scored 49 unanswered points after a 7-6 lead to assume total control for the rest of the game, rolling their way toward a 5-0 record with a 56-6 triumph over visiting Wellsville.

The Lions (0-4) got their lone score in the first half off a passing play set up by senior quarterback Liam McKinley, as he found Alex Perkins in the end zone from 25 yards out to cut Livonia’s early lead down to one. But from that point forward, the Bulldogs reigned supreme but holding Wellsville in check for the remainder of the way, posting 49 unanswered to seal up the victory.

In-depth statistics and a complete box score were not made available upon publication.

Wellsville’s regular season will come to an end under the Monday night lights of the Lion’s Den, as they host their rival — the Hornell Red Raiders for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

Bolivar-Richburg 35, Cuba-Rushford 12

CUBA — After last week’s big victory over previously undefeated Oakfield-Alabama/Elba at home, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg built a stack of momentum to carry into Wednesday’s road finale against their Hyphen Bowl rival — Cuba-Rushford. A team still in the midst of recording their first win of the season.

Through the first quarter, both the Wolverines and Rebels engaged in a close-quarters battle that would remain scoreless heading into the second. But the light bulb flickered on for Bolivar-Richburg. After a massive week from Hudson Evingham on defense last week, he moved that momentum over to the offensive side of the ball, as he gathered four of the team’s five total scores on the ground to set up shop for ultimately what became a 35-12 road win to move to .500 on the season.

“The credit needs to start up front with our line, and our backs behind Hud. They all blocked well, and it was a compliment for Hud to have his huge night the way he did,” said Wolverines coach Steve Smith. “Any time you can rush for over 400 yards, you have to be pleased for sure. We did enough to control this game tonight.”

The Wolverines completed their momentum shift from last week into tonight to move to 2-2 on the season, but it was one that the sixth-year coach was worried about at first glance.

“I told the guys this, that I was worried that we beat a really good team. How do we follow it up?” Smith wondered. “It took us a little while, and you could see it in the first quarter. Cuba-Rushford played tough football, and they were every bit of a match to us in that quarter. We had uncharacteristic penalties that really hurt. We have to clean that up, and have a better focus when it comes to that.”

Bolivar-Richburg (2-2), after a scoreless battle through the first 12 minutes, scored 28 unanswered points into the fourth quarter, including building a 14-0 lead at the half. Evingham accounted for 28 of the team’s 35 points all on the ground, scoring on scores from five, two from one yard, and a long 30-yard touchdown. The senior would finish with 29 carries for 253 total yards. The team would finish with 401 total yards.

Cuba-Rushford (0-5) would find their way on the board for the first time in the fourth quarter with Ethan Rix scoring on a 1-yard touchdown. Later on, Trent Chamberlain added a score of his own from two yards out to cut the deficit to 28-12 before Evingham added his final score from 30 yards out. Evingham would also add an interception on defense to complete another herculean effort on both sides of the field for the Wolverines.

Helping the cause for Bolivar-Richburg was Landon Danaher, who also set up shop in the backfield with an excellent night of his own, garnering 11 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown that saw the Wolverines lead grow to 28-0 towards the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Both teams will end their regular seasons early next week, as the Wolverines will host their Senior Night at Dunsmore-Latimer Field with the Notre Dame-Batavia Irish in town on Monday for a 6 p.m. visit, while Cuba-Rushford heads out over the road to close their regular season out, facing Alexander in Attica on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Smith says that next week’s Senior Night should be a special night for his Seniors.

“Tuesday comes fast. It's Senior Night for the guys, and thank goodness our Seniors experience that this year,” he said. “It was something that was up in the air up until we realized we were going to have this season. It's going to be a special night for them. The last time we played Notre Dame, they had the best team in Section V, in Class D. We'll be looking at film for sure, and they've had some injuries, but they'll come here ready to play. We have to be ready for that, because they've handled us. We have a great opportunity to play well, and eliminate some of this unnecessary shootings in the foot.”
