Wednesday Roundup: Lady Panthers cruise behind 1st half defense; GV outlasts Fillmore in OT

ANDOVER – Between Hinsdale and Andover, both schools have come together for some exciting contests in recent years. More recently, on the soccer field this past fall, and even last winter on the basketball court.

On Wednesday, the two foes met again, and as advertised, put on a competitive first quarter that saw the Lady Panthers take the four point edge. In the second quarter, that lead continued to grow.

By capitalizing on missed opportunities, Andover built upon a lengthy second quarter run to head into halftime with the lead for good, as they rolled past Hinsdale with a 55-32 win to move to 4-1 on the young season.

After the Lady Bobcats started out hot with eight of the game’s first 10 points, a quick timeout was all Andover needed to regroup, going off on a 12-0 jaunt with under three minutes left in the opening quarter before Hinsdale ended the drought with a basket inside the paint.

Despite closing out the run, the Lady Panthers picked up where they left off in the first, scoring eight of the next nine points in just over three minutes of work — a 20-4 run since the end of the frame to extend their lead the rest of the way.

“Their confidence grew after that first quarter,” said Lady Panthers coach Jake Bannerman. “They opened up when they did, and we found our way to get those second chance opportunities after the misses.”

For Andover (4-1), it was Tess Spangenburg that couldn't miss from the open floor, as she nailed four of the team's five three-pointers to provide a game-high 21 points. Spangenburg also grabbed eight rebounds, and six steals. Livia Simon was busy inside the arc, tallying 12 points. Emily Wahl chipped in with an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Kelsie Niedermaier led the rebound department with 14 of her own.

“Tess couldn't miss. She had a great game, and so did the girls,” said Bannerman. “We had three girls with double digits. The game felt like it was closer, and they had great open looks, and they never gave up. It was a great test for us, and it was nice to see these girls play as well as they did.”

Hinsdale (3-1) was paced by an 11-point performance from senior Kaitlynn Roberson.

Andover will be in for two tough tests next week, beginning on Tuesday, as they welcome in Class D1 finalist Avoca/Prattsburgh for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off before heading to Fillmore the next day, on Wednesday.

As for Hinsdale, they will return home to play host to Bolivar-Richburg next Thursday for their home opener.

FILLMORE – The Lady Eagles of Fillmore opened up their season inside The Rock strong with a little history on the side.

They have Morgan Byer to thank for it, as she set a new school record for most three-pointers made in the midst of the team's 70-15 victory over Alfred-Almond on Wednesday.

Byer came off the bench, and put forth a performance to remember for the Lady Eagles (3-0), recording all 24 of her game-high points from downtown. Altogether, she had eight of the team's 13 three-pointers to help set a big tone.

“The girls were clicking tonight, and our defense was tough,” Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “We just shot the lights out. We had 13 threes, and the girls put together a collective effort. It was really nice to see. The eight three-pointers is a school record for us. She's obviously going to factor in as a key member of our bench. She came out, and stroked it. She did that on JV too, and in a lot of other places. She was on fire tonight, and the best part is she did it within the flow of the game. She never forced it, she let it fly and in the end, she had eight of them.”

Hannah Roeske chipped in with nine points, and five steals. Emma Cole added eight points. Emilee Wright grabbed seven rebounds, while Riley Voss dished out six assists to round off Fillmore.

Avery Libordi recorded a team-leading seven points to lead Alfred-Almond (2-2).

“Teamwork definitely made the dream work,” said Lady Wolverines coach Justin Thomas. “The girls are playing well together, and they finish at the basket when they need to. There was a lot of nice give-and-go stuff, and Aliyah did a great job finishing the ball for us. We attacked the basket pretty nicely. She's never broken 20 points in her career. Now she has.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wellsville 56, Archbishop Walsh 44

OLEAN – For head coach Raymie Auman and the Wellsville Lions, his biggest takeaway from this past weekend's IAABO Tournament at Genesee Valley was testing the team's ability to assess, and learn from their mistakes.

Wednesday night, the Lions and their young guns were put to the test with star Max Jusianiec missing their road contest at Archbishop Walsh. They would end up falling behind in the first half early, but in the second half, they made up for lost time.

Eli Schmidt rose to the occasion, providing a spark plug Wellsville needed to succeed by scoring 12 of his team-leading 19 points in the last 16 minutes of play to power the Lions to the win column with a 56-44 win over the host Eagles.

“We're young, and without Max (Jusianiec) playing tonight, we're really young behind him,” said Lions coach Raymie Auman. “I think we definitely learned from our mistakes that we made in that game, and we put that into play tonight. Our depth, and fourth quarter energy eventually wore them out. Eli turned on the jets defensively in the fourth quarter, and he was able to transition into points on the other end. We certainly had a few different guys step up tonight.”

Among them, Liam McKinley and Logan Dunbar played huge roles in the Wellsville (2-2) effort, as they collected a trio of three-pointers on their way to 14, and 13-point performances respectively.

Trailing by a single possession at halftime, the Lions were able to take the lead away from the Eagles after the third quarter, courtesy of a 15-10 run to put them ahead by two. In the fourth, the game came full circle, as the defense held Archbishop Walsh to seven points in the midst of their game-sealing 17-7 run in the final eight minutes.

Wellsville will hit the road again on Friday, this time taking on their longtime rival – the Hornell Red Raiders for their first of two meetings of the season. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

“Avon played them pretty tough the other night, which just shows how strong Hornell is going to be again this year,” Auman said. “It'll be a very tough matchup, in a very hostile environment. This will be a great test as always for the guys.”

Genesee Valley 61, Fillmore 60 (OT)

BELMONT – Fillmore and Genesee Valley provided Allegany County with its first overtime contest of the season on Wednesday.

With Fillmore taking a double digit lead entering the last eight minutes of play, the Jaguars turned to their senior leader. That being star forward Cody Schneider, who fueled a big second half for the hosts to force overtime, which ultimately turned into a comeback victory, as he scored a game-high 33 points to hand Genesee Valley their third straight win by a 61-60 count.

“It was a sloppy game on our part tonight,” Jaguars coach Lintz Bliven said. “Nothing really went right, but we battled it out in overtime. We had to fight from behind, but a win is a win. They switched to man-to-man, and that gave us fits. Cody stepped up like the senior he is, and he took the game over for us with his huge second half. He was getting hammered on all night. That kid deserves all the limelight he can get, he is a worker.”

Along with his 33 points, Schneider was busy off the glass for the Jaguars (3-1), taking away the second chance opportunities from the Eagles by grabbing 12 rebounds to complete his double-double. Evan Windus finished the game with 10 points before fouling out of the contest. Riley Gordon followed with nine points of his own.

Fillmore (2-1) was led by Luke Cole, who caught fire from downtown by sinking four of the team's six three-pointers, on his way to a team-high 25-point performance. Levi Webb chipped in with a pair of threes of his own, en route to 14 points. Will Valentine added 11 points of his own for the Eagles, who broke a 9-9 first quarter tie with a 15-8 second quarter run to take the lead at the break.

Genesee Valley will take the rest of the week to prepare for their next contest in Scio, which is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start on Tuesday. For Fillmore, they head back home to host Cuba-Rushford on Friday, also at 7:30 p.m.

Andover 73, Friendship 50

FRIENDSHIP – Preston Ordway had the hot hand for the Panthers of Andover, Wednesday night.

With a 25-19 lead over host Friendship built up at halftime, his three-point shooting allowed the Panthers offense to open up toward big things in the second half, managing to branch out their lead for good to power their 73-50 win over the Golden Eagles.

“It was good for them to get a win where they can play the way they play,” said Panthers coach John Dougherty. “We finally executed on our offense, and got the ball moving really well. Preston went 7-for-9 from three-point land, and that really opened things up. He did a great job shooting, and that opened the lanes up for Spencer (Cook) to do his job.”

In all, Ordway connected with seven of Andover's (2-2) eight three-pointers from deep, as he tallied a 25-point effort. Leading the way was Spencer Cook, who brought his inside game to the table with a team-leading 27 points.
