Thursday Roundup: Fillmore golf sweeps home tri-meet with Hinsdale, B-R to clinch 4th straight Allegany County League title

RUSHFORD — There was no better way for the Fillmore Eagles to send their four seniors out in style than on a beautiful Thursday evening on the links in Rushford for potentially their final match of the season with both Hinsdale and Bolivar-Richburg in town for one last visit to Allegheny Hills.

As an added bonus, the Eagles went on to defeat both the Bobcats and Wolverines with a match-low team score of 181 — a round that gave the team their seventh Allegany County League victory of the season, and ultimately, a fourth straight League Championship with their pair of victories to sweep the match.

Two of Fillmore’s (7-2) seniors were at the top of the leaderboard when the match concluded, as Dylan Valentine and Hayden Rust provided the medaling round between all three teams with the magic number of 41. Anderson Wiltsey chipped in with a 47, while Owen Potter rounded off with a 52.

“I feel really good for our seniors, especially Dylan and Hayden because last season was wiped out for them,” said Eagles coach Tom Parks. “It was nice for them to return and send them out with a League title. Overall, the team is playing really well. I really want to give Shelby (Beardsley) a big shoutout for her best round of the season, that was really awesome to see that. We’re looking forward to Sectionals and seeing how far we can go.”

Bolivar-Richburg (2-5) placed second overall with a score of 251, with Parker Worth leading the way with a team-low round of 57. Brennan Gilliland added in a 60, while Dylon Crawford and Ryan Greeson rounded off with rounds of 65, and 69 of their own. Hinsdale (3-7) finished third overall behind a stroke count of 303, as Cayden Miller led the Bobcats with a round of 63.

With the win, it moved the Eagles to 7-0 in League play after what was perhaps their final regular season matchup of the season. As for the other two teams, they will return to action after the Memorial Day weekend, with Bolivar-Richburg heading back home to the Bolivar Golf Club to host Archbishop Walsh, while Hinsdale heads to the Wellsville Country Club to face Genesee Valley on Wednesday.

Both matches are slated for a 4 p.m. tee time.

Wellsville takes home tri-meet with C-R, GV

WELLSVILLE — The Lions of Wellsville saw Ethan Bailey and Aidan Hart pick up the leading rounds of their tri-match with both Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley at the Wellsville Country Club, Thursday night, with Bailey recording another medalist round for the hosts to pace the victory over the Rebels and Jaguars to move to 11-3 on the season.

Bailey was at the top of Wellsville’s scorecard, finishing with the overall medalist round of 40. Hart followed suit with his round of 42. Mason Parks chipped in with a 58, while Jack Jordan rounded off with a 65 for the Lions, who finished the day with a score of 205.

The Jaguars were led by Addy Herring, who recorded a team-low round of 59. Dakota Hemphill and Ashley McRae followed with rounds of 65, and 69 respectively. For Cuba-Rushford, Sebastian Saulter led with a 70. Matt Cornell added in a 79.

All three teams are back on the links with 4 p.m. tee times on Wednesday, with Cuba-Rushford and Wellsville both heading for the Bolivar Golf Club to take on the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, while Genesee Valley returns to the Wellsville Country Club to host Hinsdale.

BASEBALL

Bolivar-Richburg 6, Cuba-Rushford 1

CUBA — The previous night, Friendship/Scio and Belfast battled it out to settle the score in Allegany County’s Division II race. 24 hours later and with Fillmore looming in the distance, there was another score to be settled — Bolivar-Richburg and Cuba-Rushford, Part III.

Each team has taken a victory this season with the Rebels starting the season with a road win in Bolivar, while the Wolverines made up for that very defeat with a Tournament victory over Cuba-Rushford just a couple of weeks ago in non-league action.

They saw pitching wins games in baseball, and through a pitcher’s duel between Bolivar-Richburg’s Landon Danaher and Cuba-Rushford’s Jon White, one overcame the other. In the end, the Wolverines junior made sure he gave his team all he had, as he held the Rebels to five hits at the plate behind a season-high 14 strikeouts to keep his opposition off-kilter at the plate all game, while the offense made their contributions to complete a 6-1 victory over the road on Thursday.

“Danaher was really tough on the mound today, and he kept us off-balance,” Rebels coach Pat Wight said. “We struggled with throwing the ball around a little bit, and giving them some extra outs and free runs. Jon White pitched an excellent games for us, and he gave us that chance to be in it to win it until the end.”

Out of Bolivar-Richburg’s (8-4) six runs, three of them were recorded in the first two innings of play to kickstart a 3-0 lead on the Rebels, with two of them being scored in the second inning. Cuba-Rushford would find their way aboard in the back half, cutting their deficit down to a pair in the bottom of the fourth behind a Trent Chamberlain RBI.

But the game got away from the hosts in blue and maroon, as the Wolverines closed up shop with a three-run sixth inning to pull away permanently.

Cam MacDonell led the bats with two of Bolivar-Richburg’s eight total on offense, including an RBI. Trey Buchholz chipped in with a double, and scored a run. On the flip side, White finished with eight strikeouts and three walks in his complete game performance for the Rebels (8-4), while at the plate, Benson McCumiskey scored a hit and one run.

Both teams will have 5 p.m. home contests coming up on Tuesday, with the Wolverines playing host to Hinsdale, while the Rebels stay home to welcome in red hot Friendship/Scio — winners of seven in a row.

Genesee Valley 13, Hinsdale 1 (F-5)

BELMONT — Four different hitters recorded at least three hits at the plate for a Genesee Valley offense that ran wild at the plate all game on Thursday, as the Jaguars forced a shortened five-inning game behind a 17-hit tenure to pace a 13-1 rolling over the visiting Bobcats of Hinsdale at home.

After Hinsdale accounted for their first and only run in the top of the first inning to get started, the Jaguars (2-4) took the lead away in a flash with three runs in the bottom half as a response, building what would become 13 unanswered runs across the board, as they ran the table all the way until the game reached its end in the fifth.

Thai Norasethaporn recorded a 4-for-4 performance on offense with three RBI, and one run scored to lead the Genesee Valley bats. Riley Gordon drove in a team-leading five RBI off three hits, while Trent Scott and Elden Aquila each had three hits, with Scott driving in a run and scoring four times. On the mound, Christian Tuttle earned the win with three strikeouts and three walks.

For Hinsdale (1-7), Jake Elliott and Xavier Pascucci both provided the team’s two long hits, both off singles. On the hill, Ethan Cashimere struck out four in his three-inning start.

If weather permits tonight, both teams will return to action with 5 p.m. first pitches, as Genesee Valley pays a visit to the Lion’s Den to take on Wellsville, while Hinsdale heads back home to welcome in the Eagles of Fillmore.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 15, Allegany-Limestone 0

WELLSVILLE — After a scoreless inning between both Allegany-Limestone and Wellsville were traded in the first to begin the night at Tullar Field, it would soon transform into a massive burst of energy spouted by the Lady Lions defense, as they went on to score seven of their 15 total runs in the bottom of the second to build what would become a 15-0 shutout of the Lady Gators.

In all, the Lady Lions (16-1) gathered 18 total hits at the plate with multiple batters recording at least a pair of hits in the process. Among them was Marissa Ordway, who led the team with a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate, and three runs scored. Brazen Beckwith followed suit with a pair of doubles, and two runs scored. Maddie Spicer, Makenzie Cowburn and Lauren Cicirello each had two hits including a double, while Mallory Sibble and Matti Burke each had two hits.

While the offense was maintaining momentum, the defense followed suit in the form of a one-hit shutout from the arms of Cowburn and Ordway, as they combined to strikeout 11 across all seven innings played, with Cowburn fanning eight in her victory.

The Lady Lions are back in action tonight, if the weather cooperates, as they travel to Genesee Valley to meet the Lady Jaguars in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Bolivar-Richburg 5, Cuba-Rushford 2

RICHBURG — As of late, the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford have been playing fantastic softball, which has resulted in three straight wins. They put that on the line when they hit the road on Thursday to face Bolivar-Richburg.

In that contest, Cuba-Rushford gave the Lady Wolverines everything they could handle after establishing a first inning lead, but the resiliency of the hosts in gray and red pulled through in a big way. With the game tied at one entering the second, it was an RBI single off the bat of Trinidy Miller that gave Bolivar-Richburg their first lead — one that they never lost despite some late pressure down the homestretch, as they went on to squeeze past the Lady Rebels with a 5-2 victory in Richburg.

The hit that got the Lady Rebels going in the first came off the bat of Hunter Jahnke, who delivered a big RBI double to the outfield to plate a run, allowing the team to break through the ice first with a 1-0 lead. From the bottom half on, Bolivar-Richburg (10-2) scored the next three runs in a row to take a 3-1 lead away from the visitors, with Miller’s RBI single paying dividends to give them the lead in the second inning.

Cuba-Rushford would attempt to bounce back later on in the top of the fourth with their final run being scored off baserunning, but it was not enough to finish off their rally, as the Lady Wolverines put a bow on their victory with their two remaining runs coming across in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Lady Wolverines collected five runs off six total hits, with McKinlee Harris leading the way with a pair, scoring two runs in the process. Kelsey Pacer chipped in with a double. On the opposite side of the field, Taylor Searle recorded two of Cuba-Rushford’s (4-8) four total hits.

In the circle, Jianna Nix tallied the victory with six strikeouts and a walk in her tossed four-hitter. Sydney Howard twirled a six-hit performance for the visitors in gray and blue with three strikeouts and two walks of her own. Cuba-Rushford will hit the road for Friendship on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. first pitch.

The Lady Wolverines are back on the field with a pair of games Wednesday night, as they take a 4:30 p.m. road trip to visit the Lady Golden Eagles of Friendship before returning back home to Richburg to close out their night with a 7 p.m. nightcap against Genesee Valley.

Fillmore 5, Genesee Valley 0

FILLMORE — Between both the Lady Jaguars of Genesee Valley and the Lady Eagles of Fillmore in the first game of their home-at-home series, just four hits were collected on the offensive side of the spectrum. When it came down to brass tax, it would be determined through a defensive battle on the field.

That battle was won by the Lady Eagles, as they held the Lady Jaguars scoreless across all seven innings while Kirstin Frazier kept the opposition on their toes through and through to help build momentum for the offense, which would score the majority of their runs by using their legs to power up a 5-0 shutout on their home field, Thursday night.

“We played clean in the field, and although we didn’t create many hits, we were patient at the plate, worked some walks and ran the bases well,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “The girls are doing some good things and with more reps, and continued improvement, we hope to finish the season strong. The first three plus weeks, we dealt with weather and then a COVID pause, and we had no rhythm. This week, we started to see some good flow to allow our game to kick in.”

The lead for the Lady Eagles (4-3) began in the bottom of the first after shelling out a scoreless frame to the Lady Jaguars to begin, as they established a 2-0 lead right away. Their last three runs would come in the remaining two innings of play, including their last two runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to five. From that point forward, the rest of the game would lean on defense to hold their position, ultimately working toward the victory behind just three hits being awarded to the visitors in green and black.

Frazier earned the win with a complete game three-hitter for the Lady Eagles, fanning seven Genesee Valley hitters in all. At the plate, Skylar Gaddy had the team’s lone hit in the sixth inning off a two-out double to end the no-hit bid put on by Sierra Burrows and the Lady Jaguars (4-4), who were led by Raygen Haggstrom and her two hits on offense.

Burrows struck out nine and walked eight in her twirled one-hit gem for Genesee Valley, who will return to action in a quick turnaround tonight if weather permits, as they head back home to host Wellsville in a 5 p.m. contest.

Fillmore will wrap up the home-at-home series with the Lady Jaguars after the Memorial Day weekend on Tuesday in Belmont at 5 p.m.

Genesee Valley 000 000 0 – 0 3 0

Fillmore 201 200 X – 5 1 0

FIL – Kirstin Frazier (WP) (CG, 7K), and Kada Frazier.

Whitesville 15, Belfast 2

WHITESVILLE — Ever since the Lady Jays of Whitesville found their way on the board with their first victories earlier in the week, they would continue adding to the fire by rekindling it on Thursday back on their home turf, as they rebounded after a quick 2-0 deficit to score 15 unanswered from that point forward, rolling away toward their fourth straight win by a 15-2 count over visiting Belfast.

It was a start that the hosts in white and blue had to battle back from quickly. After Belfast (5-4) got on the board with a two-run lead, the runs for the Lady Jays then soon came after, cutting their deficit down to one before laying down the lumber on a big six-run second inning to pull ahead by a 7-2 count.

After a scoreless third inning was dealt, the floodgates broke open permanently in the fourth when Whitesville added three more runs, courtesy of a big three-run blast from the bat of Serina Button, helping them eclipse double digits in their insurmountable lead.

Altogether, the Lady Jays totaled 15 runs off 16 total hits at the plate, with Gabbi Hall having the heaviest bat behind four hits, driving two runs in and scoring three times. Rachel Jackson added in three hits, while Jessica Erdmann (two RBI) and Zoey Lee (double) added in two hits each. In the circle, Lee handed out nine chairs in her twirled six-hit victory.

“This was our Senior Night, and it was the best game we played all season,” Lady Jays coach Tammy Ellison said. “We didn’t give up any walks, and Zoey did a great job on the mound. Jessica and Serina were honored before the game, and after that, the girls got down to business. This was another great win, and now we have a few days off after playing five games in four days.”

Belfast saw Harley Proctor record two of the six hits, including a big triple to start the game in the first inning. Emma Sullivan added in a hit, as well as four strikeouts in return on the mound.

Whitesville will go for six straight wins on Wednesday over the road, when they visit the Lady Eagles of Fillmore for doubleheader action beginning with a 5 p.m. first pitch. On Tuesday, Belfast will look to rebound back on the road once more with a 5 p.m. trip to Scio.

SCIO — Just four matches took center stage in Scio on Thursday between the host Tigers and visiting Bolivar-Richburg, two from each the singles and doubles arena. Of them, the Tigers were able to collect three out of four to succeed toward victory, including a clean sweep of both singles matches, as they rolled toward a 3-1 win over the Wolverines.

Jordan White and Jude Marion were both responsible for Scio’s (5-2) wins at first and second singles, with White collecting a 6-4, 6-2 win over Roger Geist, while Marion chipped in with a 6-4, 6-3 win of his own at second singles over Paige Taylor.

The Tigers would added their last win from the first doubles team of Corey Field and Ben Weimer, as they battled through thick and thin in a three-set bout over Bolivar-Richburg’s Ben Kisel and Emma Murphy, taking the narrow 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 decision. The Wolverines would collect a victory via forfeit, with it being credited to the second doubles team of Gwen Coats and Andrew Crawford.
