Monday Roundup: Chargers end defensive battle with clamorous finish, score game’s last 11 runs to roll by C-R; Cowburn, Vogel go back-to-back to commence Wellsville’s home rout of archrival Hornell

CUBA — There was simply no budging either defense on the field at the very start of battle in Cuba on Monday. Across the many exchanges of scoreless defensive baseball, despite many runners reaching on base, there was only one that navigated its way across the plate through three complete innings.

That run belonged to the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, who made the most of their opportunities early on against Canisteo-Greenwood to aid in laying claim on an eventual 2-0 lead at one point entering the homestretch. With the momentum on their side, the hosts faced a crucial stand of defense in the frame. But in the top of the fifth inning, something began to click.

The visiting Chargers of Canisteo-Greenwood began a full gallop.

After starting the top of the fifth inning behind the first of two bases-loaded sequences, the Chargers struck gold with two leviathan two-run smacks off the bats of Brendan Ackerman and Dan Stilson. A pair of devastating hits that accounted for four of the team’s five go-ahead runs in the fifth inning — a frame that served as the ultimate precursor to the team’s big finish one inning later to officially leave Cuba-Rushford in the rearview mirror and register what was an 11-2 comeback victory over the road.

Both teams created a lot of activity through the opening frame of play, with Thomas Sirianni starting the festivities with a two-out double to deep center field before being left on a short time later at third base on a strikeout by Hayden Schappacher to Dan Stilson. In return, the Rebels (6-6) were left empty-handed despite a pair of runners occupying the corners, with Garrett Charles getting Lucas Haskins to ground out to second base to close it up.

The Rebels would manage to climb onto the board first off some key special teams with the bases loaded against Canisteo-Greenwood in the second inning. Despite the pressure behind Charles, he only surrendered just one run off a Landen Schappacher grounder to the right side to plate Adam Shaffer as the ice-breaking run.

The third inning featured another scoreless exchange before the hosts in blue and gray were presented an opportunity to extend their advantage, cracking through with a big bat in the middle of another stellar defensive outing from the Chargers, as Chase Haas delivered a slight poke into left field to signal Dean Frank around the bases to home to double the Rebels lead.

What momentum was established by Cuba-Rushford was suddenly gone when the action transitioned to the top of the fifth inning, as Canisteo-Greenwood took complete control of everything, beginning with five monstrous runs — two each off the bat of Ackerman and his single, and then, on the second reloading of the bases against the Rebels, two more runs on Stilson’s massive triple to right field to break the game wide open with a 5-2 lead.

With their first lead of the game in their possession, Canisteo-Greenwood savored every moment of it going forward, as they brought down the house with their final six runs off a plethora of RBI singles at the plate in the top of the sixth inning, eclipsing double figure territory along the way to finish off their huge road win.

The Chargers collected their 11 runs off 10 total hits, with Stilson finishing with a 2-for-4 outing that witnessed a triple, four total RBI and a run scored come to fruition. Ackerman, Sirianni and Charles all had two hits of their own to chip in. On the mound, the win belonged to Charles, who went four innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

For the Rebels, they scored just three hits — all of which from their bottom four hitters in the lineup, with Shaffer, Dean Frank and Chase Haas all posting one. On the mound, Schappacher went five innings with five strikeouts and three walks.

Cuba-Rushford receives an opportunity to turn the ship back around tonight, as they return to their home field to host Andover/Whitesville at 5 p.m.

Wellsville 12, Hornell 1 (F-5)

WELLSVILLE — With three games remaining, including their final renewal of their rivalry with the Hornell Red Raiders on Monday, the race to the finish line for the Lions of Wellsville was on. The offense has found their rhythm at the plate, combining for just over 30 runs on 24 hits in their last two games against Canisteo-Greenwood and Allegany-Limestone.

Their battle with the Red Raiders was no different, despite their rivals claiming the early edge out of the gate. Their response to it, the biggest of bangs.

Quite literally.

The first two hitters in their offensive stand, Aiden Cowburn and Ty Vogel each had a turn at leaving the yard, as the two Lions seniors went back-to-back against Hornell to start the game, beginning a strand of 12 unanswered runs to force an early exit off the field to start the week, wrapping up what was a 12-1 five-inning win over the Red Raiders.

“We definitely swung the sticks pretty well tonight,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “We’ve always talked about jumping ahead and scoring first right away. Hitting two moonshots like that off the bat really got us going. 14 hits total as a team tonight, it’s nice to have that, because we had a lot of guys that hit the ball hard. Hopefully this is something that continues to stick with us for the next three weeks ahead of us.”

The two solo home runs at the top of the Wellsville (11-3) batting order came amidst even more offensive activity at the plate, with Karter Grover chipping in an RBI off a single to score the team’s third and final run of the first inning. From the second inning on, all momentum was clasped by the hosts in orange following a three-strikeout frame from Trent Green on the hill, as they drove in five runs — two more off the bat of Vogel, to jump out towards an 8-1 lead.

With the defense showing no signs of giving way, the Lions went on to score four more runs in the last two innings of offense they could provide, as they officially locked down the shortened victory in five innings.

On top of their hitting cluster the past two games on the diamond, Wellsville added in 14 more hits into the fray to account for their 12 runs, with Vogel’s perfect 3-for-3 outing leading the way, as he totaled four RBI and two runs scored to go with his home run. Cowburn finished with three hits — a triple shy of the cycle, recording a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Karter Grover had two hits total to chip in.

On the mound, Green was superb, going four innings strong to keep Hornell frozen at the plate with eight strikeouts and three walks.

For the Red Raiders, Sheamus Khork led the sticks with two of the team’s three total hits, with Aaron McInerney posting the remaining hit. On the mound, Logan Vondracek fanned two and walked two in his spurt of relief.

Wellsville will now turn their attention to the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines on Thursday, as they prepare to hit the road for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Fillmore 11, Andover/Whitesville 1 (F-5)

WHITESVILLE — Enduring a 3-1 loss to the hands of York/Pavilion this past weekend at Houghton University, the Eagles of Fillmore were poised to spring right back into the win column upon their return to the diamond on Monday. With a visit to Andover/Whitesville, a fast second inning of offense did just the trick, as it served as the team’s offensive spark plug to electrify their 11-1 road win in Whitesville after five complete frames.

There was an even timeshare between the runs and hits that Fillmore (7-5) produced, as they registered all 11 of their runs off 11 total hits at the dish. Immediately following a scoreless first outing of defense from both parties, the Eagles turned up the heat soon after, as they catapulted ahead with the first of two four-run frames against Andover/Whitesville to break the ice.

Although the hosts were able to reach the board in the bottom half of the stanza to trim their deficit down to three, the visitors countered with a knockout punch in the last two innings, scoring seven unanswered — four more stemming in a top of the fifth inning that ultimately pushed the game out of reach, sealing the door shut on Andover/Whitesville (4-7).

Leading the bats for the Eagles was Damon Potter, who went an immaculate 3-for-3 with a triple. Jared Boon chipped in two hits of his own, including a double. On the mound, the win was captured by Malcolm Nusbickle, as he handed out five strikeouts and walked four across his four-inning start.

For the hosts, Colton Calladine led the way with two of the team’s six hits, which was incorporated with a double. On the rubber, Vinny Joyce struck out three and walked three in his three-inning start.

Both teams will have Cuba-Rushford up next on their respective dockets, with Andover/Whitesville going first out on the road tonight in a 5 p.m. first pitch. On the very next day, Fillmore will have their shot back home to the Town Park, hosting the Rebels in a 5 p.m. contest of their own on Wednesday.

Bolivar-Richburg 12, Hinsdale 1 (F-5)

HINSDALE — The run-scoring jamboree for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg commenced entering the homestretch of their Monday evening trip to Hinsdale. With a first inning lead in their possession, the visitors in black and red let loose at the plate, pushing their advantage into unassailable territory, as they coasted past the host Bobcats with a strong 12-1 victory after five complete innings.

Although the Wolverines (10-4) tallied just seven hits at the plate against the Bobcats, the majority of them came from within the team’s third approach to the plate. With a 2-0 lead already in hand, the hammer was brought down almost immediately by the aid of Landon Barkley and Maddox Davison — each leaving the yard during the team’s nine-run frame, with Barkley blasting a three-run homer, while Davison recorded a two-run homer of his own.

Hinsdale (1-12) went on to end Bolivar-Richburg’s shutout bid immediately after the fireworks, in the bottom of the third inning, with Robert Childs scoring the lone run. Childs was also the leading hitter for the hosts at the plate, scoring two of their three hits.

The Wolverines solidified an early closure to the contest in the top of the fifth inning, scratching one more run across to meet the 10-run limit, allowing Braden Zilker to finish off his command of the mound in victory.

Zilker went all five innings for the visitors on the bump, handing out seven chairs and walking just one. Zilker also contributed a double and scored four runs at the plate. Leading the bats was Ryder Iantorno, who went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Barkley and Davison each finished with three total RBI, with Barkley scoring three runs of his own in addition.

The Bobcats were paced by Forney on the hill to counter Zilker, as he advanced his start into the third inning with two strikeouts and four walks. Hinsdale will return to action on their home field tonight, hosting Genesee Valley/Belfast at 5 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg is now off until Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. trip to soak in the lights of the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast, as they square off with host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a battle that will likely determine this year’s Allegany County League Champion.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 15, Friendship/Scio 0 (F-5)

SCIO — In his first ever Varsity start on the mound, Derek Calanni made it one to remember on Monday. From start to finish, the Genesee Valley/Belfast commanded the strike-zone by handing out 10 chairs and walking just one against host Friendship/Scio under the lights, as they remained on fire coming down the homestretch of the regular season with a 15-0 five-inning win in Scio.

The bats at the plate were firing relentlessly from the arsenal right from beginning for Genesee Valley/Belfast (14-1), witnessing five different hitters all posting at least a pair of hits from within their 13-hit catalog. Leading the way was Ryan Daciw, who sent both of his hits straight out of the park, garnering a three-run and a two-run homer, his third and fourth of the season, to total five RBI and three runs scored.

In addition to the efforts, Ian McKenzie was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Calanni also had two hits and drove in three runs. Evan Turybury had two hits and two RBI, while Zach Thomas, in his first official start of the season, had two more hits to chip in, including a double for Genesee Valley/Belfast, who claimed a 5-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back.

Friendship/Scio (0-13) was guided by RJ Leyva on the mound in his relief appearance, as he fanned seven and walked five.

Both teams will have Hinsdale up next on their schedules, with Genesee Valley/Belfast continuing their road swing tonight with a 5 p.m. visit to the Bobcats. Friendship/Scio will travel to Hinsdale themselves one day later for a 5 p.m. first pitch of their own, Wednesday evening.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 12, Hornell 0 (F-6)

WELLSVILLE — It took a little bit of time for the Lady Lions of Wellsville to get their engines firing, but once they did, there was no letting off the gas. Over the course of the last four innings of play, the temperature gradually rose at the plate until the alarm bells sounded off in the bottom of the sixth inning, as their offensive five-alarm fire resulted in a six-inning conclusion against archrival Hornell at Tullar Field in a 12-0 shutout on Monday.

The two storied adversaries went toe-to-toe in an early defensive battle out of the gate, with each defense standing tall through two scoreless frames of play behind the guidance of their pitchers — Alexis Smith for Hornell, and Kennedy Perry for the Lady Lions (14-2). After handing out a third straight goose egg to open the frame, the hosts in orange transitioned that momentum to the plate, where they broke the ice in style with two big hits.

Paid in part by an Averee Palmatier double and an Ayla Faulkner triple, the defending Class B State Champions went on to take a 1-0 lead that continued to blossom over time. In the bottom of the second, Palmatier came through again with Makenna Dunbar and Kennedy Perry both occupying the bases, as she drove both of them in on a bases-clearing double to triple their advantage over the Lady Red Raiders.

With three more strikeouts under her belt through the fourth inning of defense, the Lady Lions continued to break it open with four more runs in the bottom half of action — three of those runs coming on three RBI doubles off the bats of Dunbar, Perry and Lindsay Stuck. To finish off the victory, the home team scratched across five more runs to force the 12-run rule into effect, with Perry ending the game with her second double in walk-off fashion.

In total, Wellsville collected their 12 runs off 14 total hits, with six different Lady Lions all posting at least two. Leading the charge was both Dunbar and Perry, each recording three, including two doubles and three RBI. Palmatier had two doubles and two RBI, while Ayla Faulkner, Natalie Adams and Lindsay Stuck each had two hits.

In the circle, the win was all Perry’s to claim, as she surrendered just one hit while fanning 12 Lady Red Raiders at the plate. For Hornell, Lara Connors had the team’s lone hit.

The Lady Lions return to Tullar Field tonight, this time for their Senior Night celebration, as they get set to host the Keshequa Lady Wildcats at 7:15 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 7, Campbell-Savona 0

CUBA — Behind an absolutely stellar start in the circle from Lizzie Kocsis, the offense soon followed for Cuba-Rushford. After putting a shutout defeat to Wellsville in the rearview mirror this past Friday, the Lady Rebels turned it around quickly and delivered back-to-back shutouts of their own, restarting once again on Monday to hop back over .500 on the campaign with a 7-0 blank of visiting Campbell-Savona on Senior Night.

With the exception of the seventh inning, the Lady Rebels (7-6) produced at least a run in every single inning to set the stage, beginning with a 2-0 lead off special teams entering the third inning. The offense branched out their lead with the aid of Emma Bunk’s RBI single, as she drove in Aubrey Williams, who initially reached base on a two-out double.

The hosts in gray and blue doubled the runs in the bottom of the fourth off two more big hits, with Arlah Shaffer driving in one on her single before Williams followed through with one of her own immediately after to continue extending their advantage. By way of errors by the Campbell-Savona defense, the Lady Rebels finished off their victory with one more run in each of the last two frames to complete a seven-run, eight-hit display.

Leading the bats were Shaffer and Bunk, each posting two in total, with Shaffer scoring two runs. On the mound, Lizzie Kocsis was under complete control, holding Campbell-Savona to just three hits while fanning nine and walking one in her six-inning start.

Cuba-Rushford will look to keep their winning ways rolling in a return trip back on their home field tonight, hosting Andover/Whitesville at 5 p.m.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 11, Friendship/Scio 1

FRIENDSHIP — The Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies overcame a hot start from Friendship/Scio right out of gate on Monday, as they countered their first inning advantage with a torrential downpour of runs themselves beginning in the second inning and going onward, posting 11 straight runs in all during that span to set up shop for what was an 11-1 road win in Friendship.

Friendship/Scio worked out of an early jam that saw two Genesee Valley/Belfast base-runners reach in the midst of their opening at-bats, transitioning the defensive momentum to the plate where they collected their first and only RBI off the bat of Jadyn Wonderling, as she drove home Avery Lamberson on a single to break the ice for the home side of the scoreboard.

Then, Genesee Valley/Belfast (12-3) seized the reins instantly, scoring six combined runs through the next two innings of play, loading up the bases on their first three at-bats in the second inning before using some key special teams around the bases to bring them across. Kate Calanni then helped highlight the second three-run frame in the third with an RBI off a fielder’s choice she laid down against the Friendship/Scio (3-10) defense, bolstering their advantage to 6-1.

After both teams traded a scoreless fourth inning, the visitors went on to cement their advantage for good, scoring four more runs in the top of the fifth before one more run came across in the sixth to finish off the scoring. In all, Genesee Valley/Belfast collected all 11 runs off seven hits, with Hannah Powers (double) and Morgan Yackeren each provisioning two.

In the circle, Powers went six strong innings, keeping Friendship/Scio at bay with nine strikeouts and two walks. In relief, Kate Calanni came in and deadbolted the door shut with a striking out of the side in the seventh inning to finish off the team’s final stand of defense.

For Friendship/Scio, Wonderling led the bats with two of the team’s four in total. In the circle, Addy Sekoll provided outstanding relief with five strikeouts.

Both teams will have Bolivar-Richburg up next on their slates, with Friendship/Scio having first crack tonight at Stan Harris Field in Richburg beginning in a 5 p.m. first pitch. Genesee Valley/Belfast will then follow the next night, on Wednesday at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast, as they host the Lady Wolverines in a 7 p.m. contest of their own.

Fillmore 16, Andover/Whitesville 1 (F-5)

ANDOVER — With their first run in the wagon, it served as the genesis of more to come for the Fillmore Lady Eagles on Monday. During their visit to Andover/Whitesville, it was a second inning lead that grew larger at an instant, as they pushed their chips to the center of the table on a herculean third inning to keep their command of the contest intact, on their way towards a 16-1 road win — their 10th of the campaign, in Andover.

With some aggressive base-running starting the scoring after a first inning blank for both teams, the Lady Eagles (10-3) were ready to do even more damage with their top of the lineup returning to the plate, rattling off four consecutive hits — two on back-to-back RBI singles from Morghyn Ross and Mattie McCumiskey to quickly triple their advantage.

The offense continued to escalate even more going back through the entire lineup, with almost every Lady Eagle scratching across home plate at least once in the process. When it was all said and done, the visitors concluded a 10-run inning consisting of six big hits to claim an 11-0 lead on Andover/Whitesville (4-7).

The hosts ended Fillmore’s potential shutout bid right after their third inning avalanche, with Naudia Pierson working her way to home off some special teams around the bases.

But just as Andover/Whitesville got on the board, the Lady Eagles came right back with a five-run top of the fourth to ultimately finish off their road victory, as they completed a 12-hit showing at the plate to go with their 16 total runs.

While the offense was conducting business at the plate, Mylee Miller was holding down the fort in the circle, as she surrendered only three hits while striking out nine and walking just one in her complete game for the Lady Eagles. At the plate, she, along with Morghyn Ross and Mattie McCumiskey all had two hits each to record.

On the opposite side, Andover/Whitesville saw Lilly Harrington strike out five and walk seven in her three innings of work on the mound.

Both teams make their return to action tonight, with Fillmore heading back home for a 7 p.m. contest under the lights against Portville, while Andover/Whitesville looks to bounce back with a visit to Cuba-Rushford at 5 p.m.

It was a 5-0 lead for Bolivar-Richburg (8-4) that they never lost going forward out of the gate, as they collected their 22 runs off 13 total hits at the dish. Four different hitters paced the offense with at least two hits, with a 3-for-4 outing from Rylee Whiting headlining the way, finishing with a triple and four runs scored. Kylee Whiting, Cassidy Stives and Sydney Faulkner each recorded two hits of their own, with Whiting scoring four runs along the way.

In the circle, Kylee Whiting went all five innings, freezing Hinsdale (1-13) at the plate completely behind nine strikeouts to finish off a one-hit performance.

For the Lady Bobcats, the no-hit bid by Whiting was broken up by Alli Greenawalt, who posted a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth.

Both teams will make their way back onto the field tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with Bolivar-Richburg heading back home to Stan Harris Field to host Friendship/Scio, while Hinsdale hosts Genesee Valley/Belfast.

TRACK

Fresh off Hornell Invite win, Wellsville rolls past B-R, GV/Belfast

BELMONT — The Wellsville track and field team is riding high after another marvelous and gritty first-place performance this past weekend at Hornell’s annual running of the Castiglione-Tobin Invitational. It was only appropriate if they continued to keep that momentum rolling on all fronts to start the new week on Monday, as both teams came away with complete sweeps of the action in Belmont, as they coasted past both Bolivar-Richburg and host Genesee Valley/Belfast in tri-meet action.

The Wellsville boys team witnessed 14 total first place finishes come to light in the midst of their wins over Bolivar-Richburg (114-21) and Genesee Valley/Belfast (106-29), with JJ Howard leading the entire field with his complete sweep of all three jumping events from the field, claiming top finishes in the high jump, long jump and the triple jump. Collin Perkins and Jack Davis each had two wins of their own to chip in, with Perkins claiming victory in the 800 and 1600 runs, while Davis scored his top finishes in the 110 hurdles and from the pole vault.

On top of a complete sweep of all three relay events — the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays, Wellsville had four more individual first place finishes to round off the scoring, as Andrew Kristerofferson (400 sprint), Gabe Quackenbush (3200 run), David Lamberson (400 hurdles) and Derek Coleman (discus) all received gold in their respective events to further the team’s cause.

As for the Lady Lions, they also took down Bolivar-Richburg (90-33) and Genesee Valley/Belfast (81-58) with eight first place finishes of their own in competition, led by throwing superstar Kaylee Oswald and her sweep of both the shot put and discus events. Jaden Dunbar and Selah Ader both tied for first place in the pole vault event, while Maddie Muurisepp and Talia O’Connor swept the hurdling events with wins in the 100 and 400, respectively.

To pair with a 3200 relay victory, Piper Metro had the final individual win for the Lady Lions, as she rose to a 5-0 height to claim gold in the high jump.

Host Genesee Valley/Belfast split the action right down the middle with the boys and girls teams both scoring wins over Bolivar-Richburg (73-40; 98-29). For the boys, they scored three first place finishes in total — two from Brayden Cooper, who prevailed on top with victories in the 100 dash and the shot put. Wyatt Weaver had the team’s last win in the 200 dash.

The ladies saw seven first place finishes come to full fruition — three of them from Bayleigh Tallman, who had another whale of a performance with her victories in the 100 and 200 dashes, as well as the long jump. Regina Dougherty placed first in the 400 sprint. Christina McAuley finished tops in the 3200 run, as the final two individual triumphs were paired with a winning 400 and 1600 relay event.

Bolivar-Richburg collected three first place finishes in total, all from the Lady Wolverines squad — two from Raegan Giardini, who sped her way to the finish line first with wins in the 800 and 1500. Carmen Crowley chipped in the team’s last individual win from the field, in the triple jump.

The Wolverines will hit the road for Alfred-Almond on Thursday at 5 p.m. leading up to the Super 8 Meet in Salamanca on Friday and the Wellsville Elks Spring Day on Saturday.
