Thursday Roundup: C-R, Houghton Academy punch tickets to title game; Lady Lions soar past C-LV in Allegany

SCIO – With two other events on Thursday's schedule being rescheduled for another day, the spotlight was shining over the grounds of Scio Central School for their annual girls Christmas basketball tournament.

In each game, it saw a big run in the first half power each victory, as Cuba-Rushford and Houghton Academy each punched their ticket to the tournament's championship game this weekend, with the Lady Rebels kicking the night off with a 49-18 win over Friendship.

Things got off on the right foot for the Lady Rebels right in the early-going from Kate Howe, who scored 10 of the first 12 points to power a massive 20-3 first quarter run before a scoreless run through the second quarter ended the first half.

Howe led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 20 points for Cuba-Rushford (1-3), who will look for their fifth straight Scio Christmas Tournament title. Helping the cause was Taylor Searle, who had 11 points. Ella Jaffe had six to chip in.

Friendship (1-3) was led by Navaeh Ross, who netted 11 of the team's 18 points.

In the nightcap, despite the Lady Tigers hanging right with Houghton Academy through the first quarter, the Lady Panthers of Houghton Academy provided a game-changing run in the next frame, holding the hosts to just four points in the midst of their 17-4 run to lock up the 46-22 victory.

Houghton Academy (2-2) started out hot with a 7-0 run of the Lady Tigers through the first three minutes of play. From there, the Lady Tigers managed to cut away at their early lead, as each team traded baskets until the end of the quarter to keep it an eight-point advantage for the visitors.

From the second into the third quarter, the Lady Panthers capitalized on everything they could, as they managed to hold Scio in check with a massive 29-6 run to stay ahead for good.

Jessica Prentice, and Emma Retz each led the scoring for Houghton Academy with a game-high 17 points. Emma Retz had the last eight points.

For Scio (0-4), Ashlynn Scotchmer paved the offense with nine points.

On Saturday, the Scio Christmas Tournament will come to a conclusion, as Friendship and Scio battle in the consolation round beginning at 6 p.m, while Houghton Academy and Cuba-Rushford wrap up the night battling for the tournament crown at 7:30 p.m.

A-L Tournament

Wellsville 47, Catt-Little Valley 23

ALLEGANY – A bright showing of defense got the Lady Lions of Wellsville off to a quick start at the Allegany-Limestone Shootout in the Swamp Tournament on Wednesday, as they held their opposition to just three points in the opening quarter, allowing the offense to open up to big things in their 47-23 win over Cattaraugus-Little Valley.

“Emily Costello and Marley Adams did a great job defensively, and got us off to a quick start,” Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord said. “Stingy defense led to quick offense, and Regan Marsh held their best player scoreless inside. She played great defense, and she was on the floor for loose balls, really getting after it. We are gaining confidence every game. This was an excellent team effort.”

After an offensive explosion from Adams in their home opener against Addison on Monday, the Wellsville (3-1) sophomore did it all over again, tag-teaming with Marsh to collect 11 of the team's 14 points inside their 14-3 run of Catt-Little Valley in the opening quarter.

Adams ended up finishing with a game-high 17 points to pair with her nine rebounds. Marsh ended with 10 points. Emily Costello had seven points and six steals, while Kaylee Coleman grabbed seven rebounds of her own off the glass.

Prior to the varsity contest, the Lady Lions JV squad picked up another victory by a 55-20 count over Catt-Little Valley. Brooklyn Stisser paced the offense with 14 points.
