Friday Roundup: Ark/Can rallies to defeat Belfast; Hornell goes by Wellsville in 1st of two meetings

BELFAST – For the Belfast Lady Bulldogs, it was a very promising start to begin the search for their first win of the season on Friday. From the opening tip to the second quarter, they battled back to head into the break with the lead.

But in the next half, visiting Arkport/Canaseraga flipped the script, running off on a game-changing 18-4 third quarter run to keep the Belfast offense at bay to remain unbeaten on the young season with a 47-27 road win.

The Lady Wolves (3-0) were the first team to strike first, scoring with a basket inside. At that point, Belfast would go on to score the next six straight, including four off the hand of Kaitlin Sadler to give them the 6-2 edge near the halfway mark of the quarter.

Arkport/Canaseraga would respond however, as they ended the frame with the last seven points including a Meghan Patrick three toward the tail end of the period. In the second, the Lady Bulldogs (0-4) began to take control, as Emma Sullivan took charge of the offense by scoring six of the team's eight points in an 8-2 run that gave them the three-point lead at the half.

In the next half of play, Arkport/Canaseraga regrouped and brought it all to the table, as they kicked their defense into high gear with a 36-13 outscoring of Belfast the rest of the way to come back, and pick up the victory.

Sullivan, along with Mary Hamer, led the Lady Bulldogs with eight points each. Alicia Borden added four points.

Belfast is back in action on Wednesday, as they visit Genesee Valley for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hornell 63, Wellsville 51

HORNELL – Despite an explosive night from Wellsville's star guard Max Jusianiec, the Red Raiders of Hornell started out the evening red hot, providing a big 21-9 run through the first quarter that ultimately set the tone for good, as they went to 4-0 on the season with a 63-51 victory over the Lions on Friday.

“It was a very hard-fought game tonight in an incredible atmosphere,” Lions coach Raymie Auman said. “We dug a hole early and whenever we made a run, and cut the lead down, their seniors would make a big play and settle things back down again. It was good for us to see what level of play we need to get in order to compete come playoff time. We have a long way to go, but I'm confident that we will get there.”

Chase Freeland was one of those seniors that made things difficult for the Lions, as the Red Raiders guard picked up a team-leading 24 points, with 13 of them coming in the first half. In the second half, Freeland tag-teammed with fellow senior Conor Smith in the late stages to assist in locking down the victory for good to remain unbeaten.

Jusianiec led all scorers on the floor by recording a career-high 40 points, including four of Wellsville's (2-3) five three-pointers. Logan Dunbar had five points of his own to add.

Up next for the Lions is their home opener on Tuesday, as they welcome Section VI powerhouse Olean to the
Lion's Den at 7:30 p.m.

“We have a very tough schedule, and Olean is a powerhouse,” said Auman. “Hopefully we can take what we learned tonight, apply it to Tuesday, and along with playing at home, maybe we can relax a bit and put together a great game.”
