Monday Roundup: Class D State Champ Ark-Can assembles timely hits down stretch to outlast Potter, Fillmore in 8-5 home win; Lions baseball rips off band-aid in 3rd inning to pace 11-5 win over C-R

ARKPORT — Recent history shows that when sharing the same exact diamond for a stage on a dedicated night for baseball, both Fillmore and Arkport-Canaseraga always put together one of the finest productions within the surrounding area.

A Monday night at Timmerman Field in Arkport was the first of two platforms that both squads will share this 2025 campaign outdoors. But it was also one that cemented yet another phenomenal display of competition right from the start, as both Fillmore’s Damon Potter and Arkport-Canaseraga’s Caden Carey were up for the challenge in a back-and-forth exchange on the hill.

As time went on, the bats began to rise in temperature leading up to the third inning, when both teams created two go-ahead sequences during their time as conductor of the orchestra. The latter of which belonged to the Class D State Champion Wolves, and it was one that kept them ahead for good.

With all the pressure in the world by the Eagles coming down the stretch, Arkport-Canaseraga remained one step ahead, as they bolstered their advantage in the bottom of the fourth with some massive timely hitting to pull away towards victory in the first of a two-game set this season between the foes, edging by Fillmore in an 8-5 final count.

Both starting pitchers worked through a first inning of complete efficiency, with Carey delivering a rapid fire 1-2-3 of the Fillmore (4-3) bats out of the gate, while Potter bounced right back with a fanning of the side in the bottom half to keep the Wolves frozen. The visitors were the first to place runners on base in the second frame, but the hosts in black and teal were the first with their runners in scoring position, as they brought one across on an errant throw to third base that went wide of the bag.

In the fourth inning, two different go-ahead sequences were plastered into the ledger, with Fillmore supplying theirs first in the top half, which was set up by a lead-off double by Brayden Hennard and a infield bunt single by Jared Boon at the top of the order.

Hennard navigated his way across the plate on a hard hit single into left from James Hillman to tie the game at one before he, along with Hennard, scored on a throwing error at first base with two outs during Jack Boon’s at-bat.

Arkport-Canaseraga then provided a response of their own in go-ahead quality, pouncing right back with a three-run frame — two of the runs being scored on a deep double by John Marcus into left center field, claiming the eventual 4-3 lead in the process. After Fillmore was shut down in the fourth inning, the momentum remained with the Wolves from that point on, as they gained even more room to work off four more timely runs, recording an 8-3 lead they never looked back on.

The Eagles posted their five runs off six hits, with Hillman and Jack Boon paving the way with two hits each. On the mound, Damon Potter struck out four and walked three during his start that elongated into the fifth inning. In relief, Jared Boon supplied five strikeouts and two walks of his own to help prevent any more damage by the Wolves from coming across.

For the defending State Champions, they recorded eight runs off 10 hits, with Marcus, Eli Merry and Bryer Drake all registering a pair of hits. Marcus led the team’s bats with three total RBI and a run scored. Merry and Drake each had two RBI of their own. On the hill, Carey went the first five innings, garnering four strikeouts to claim the victory.

Fillmore is back home to the Town Park on Wednesday, hosting the Hinsdale Bobcats at 5 p.m.

Wellsville 11, Cuba-Rushford 5

WELLSVILLE — The band-aid was ripped off immediately by the Lions of Wellsville on Monday. Following their first run of the game to help break the ice, the avalanche of runs soon came after, as the defending Class B champions strung together a wide array of hits in the bottom of the third inning to crack the 10-run marker for the contest against Cuba-Rushford, rolling towards an eventual 11-5 victory in the Lion’s Den.

Behind an RBI double off the bat of Matt Ritter to provide the game’s first crack into the ice, Wellsville (7-2) continued finding all the right grooves at the plate entering a third inning that broke the floodgates down, as Ritter (single) and Trent Green (double) each drove in a run, while Andrew Ordiway supplied three RBI off two hits of his own.

In addition to the clamorous frame of attack, the Lions also registered an RBI double off the bat of Gavin Haggerty, as well as a contact RBI from Tyler Rahr, to set the stage for a nine-run stanza and a 10-0 lead they never looked back on.

The Rebels (2-3), despite the disadvantage, continued to work against the Wellsville bullpen, as they climbed back into the game with five of the next six runs. But before any more damage was applied, Ordiway slammed the door shut during his relief appearance in the seventh inning by mustering all three outs with his glove — two by way of strikeout before finishing off a ground-ball for the game’s final out and the victory for the Lions.

Wellsville totaled 11 runs off 13 hits at the dish, with Ordiway and his masterful 4-for-4 outing leading the charge, as he compiled three RBI and scored two runs. Ritter finished a perfect 3-for-3 with his RBI double and two runs scored. In addition, Aiden Cowburn also had three hits and scored twice, while Cam Lyons and Trent Green had two each, with Green driving in two runs and scoring twice.

On the mound, the win belonged to Gavin Haggerty, who went the first three innings with two strikeouts and a walk.

For Cuba-Rushford, Lucas Haskins recorded a brilliant relief appearance, striking out four and walking one. At the plate, Landen Schappacher led the bats with a 2-for-4 outing that saw him score a run.

Both teams are on the road Wednesday night for a pair of 5 p.m. clashes, as the Lions trek north for a whale of a showdown with the Wayland-Cohocton Eagles, while Cuba-Rushford looks to navigate their way back into the win column with a pit stop at Wellman Field in Friendship to meet host Friendship/Scio.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 12, Canisteo-Greenwood 0 (F-5)

CANISTEO — In his first season with Genesee Valley/Belfast, Ethan Davenport has been on a roll right from the beginning. Monday night was no different when the team traveled to Canisteo-Greenwood for battle, as he stood stall with another dominant outing on the rubber, twirling a three-hit shutout while striking out 12 Chargers hitters to finish off a 12-0 five-inning road win in the Canisteo Valley.

With 12 strikeouts through five innings of hard work on the hill, the hard-throwing right-hander for Genesee Valley/Belfast (8-1) is now up to 56 strikeouts and just six walks across nearly 30 innings pitched. On offense, the visitors used seven walks and three hit-by-pitches, along with three errors by the Chargers defense to record six unearned out of their 12 total runs.

That, along with a leading performance from their junior hurler along the way, as Davenport provided his helping hand at the dish with a perfect 2-for-2 outing. Right behind him, Ian McKenzie, Derek Calanni, Ryan Daciw, Nolan Hunter and Ty Hutchison all had a hit to add into the mix.

Canisteo-Greenwood saw Kevin Sirianni, Thomas Sirianni and David Cone all register a hit at the dish to power the offense.

A complete box score was not made available to report upon publication.

Jasper-Troupsburg 20, Friendship/Scio 14 (F-5)

JASPER — In a game that was shortened due to darkness, Friendship/Scio and Jasper-Troupsburg put another run-scoring parade on full display Monday night off to the east, as the two teams combined for 34 runs — 30 of those runs coming in the first three innings of play. In the end, it was an 11-run opening at-bat for the host Wildcats that served as the ultimate difference maker, as they prevailed by a 20-14 count after five innings.

Despite an early 3-0 lead by way of the visitors, Jasper-Troupsburg’s response at the dish moments later was tenfold, as they took the lead and never lost it going forward with an 11-run opening at-bat. Despite some added pressure by Friendship/Scio (0-6) with seven runs in the top of the third, the Wildcats pulled away with six more runs in the bottom half to finish off their scoring.

Friendship/Scio collected six hits at the plate while capitalizing on a ton of special teams along the way, with Daejin Langdon recording a hit, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Shawn Wade had three more runs to score himself. On the mound, Mike Wade struck out five and walked six in his tenure of relief beginning in the third inning.

For the Wildcats, Trajan Terry struck out six and walked nine during his start on the hill. At the plate, Nolan Vallieres and Rylan Rice each recorded two hits.

Up next, Friendship/Scio will prepare to face the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford back home at Wellman Field in Friendship, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

ELLICOTTVILLE — The offense charged at full force for the Bobcats of Hinsdale on Monday, as they traveled over the road to make plenty of noise at the plate while keeping host Ellicottville absolutely silent, rebounding back into the win column in the biggest of ways with a 15-0 five-inning victory.

Stats and a complete box score were not made available to report upon publication.

Hinsdale (2-5) springs back to action with another road trip on Wednesday, visiting the Town Park in Fillmore to battle the host Eagles at 5 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Fillmore 7, Arkport-Canaseraga 6

ARKPORT — With the baseball teams doing battle from across the way at Timmerman Field, there was another Fillmore and Arkport-Canaseraga score to settle from upon the softball field Monday night in Arkport. With the Lady Eagles already carrying one game in hand over the Lady Wolves, a chance to bring out the brooms for the complete sweep for the season was waiting in the wings.

The Lady Eagles jumped the gun early on with a quick lead in the first three innings of play. They would gradually build upon it over time, but in the same swing, Arkport-Canaseraga never made it easy.

After a final application of pressure down the stretch, what was once a five-run deficit, was soon whittled down to a single run during the final inning. But despite it, Fillmore remained steady to hold them off one last time, as they prevented further damage from the Lady Wolves to keep their game-long advantage unaltered, proceeding to bring out the brooms for the series sweep over the road in what was a 7-6 razor-thin edge.

Right away, the Lady Eagles (6-2) knocked on the door of opportunity in the first three innings of play, posting a pair of runs to capture the game’s first lead. Entering the fourth inning, they extended their lead even further behind the aid of Morghyn Ross with the bases jammed against the Lady Wolves, as she brought two of those runs in on a hammered single into the outfield to provide a 4-0 lead.

With one more run coming in to score later on in the fifth, the Lady Wolves then shifted the momentum in their favor with six of the last eight runs in the contest — four of them stemming in a bottom of the seventh inning to nearly flip the game on its head completely, chopping away at what was once a five-run deficit, and bringing it down to one. But in the end, the Lady Eagles brought it all back together on defense to prevail in the final stages, evading a late Arkport-Canaseraga rally to finish off their season-series sweep.

Fillmore put the pieces to the puzzle together on a seven-run, eight-hit display of offense at the dish. Leading the sticks was Mattie McCumiskey, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Tenlee Miller had two hits. On the mound, Mylee Miller went the distance behind nine strikeouts and five walks to garner the victory.

For the Lady Wolves, Autumn Frechette struck out five and walked two in her four-inning start on the mound.

Up next for the Lady Eagles is a quick turnaround back on their home field tonight, weather permitting, as they play host to the Avoca-Prattsburgh Lady Titans in a 7 p.m. first pitch.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 10, Canisteo-Greenwood 1

CANISTEO — The Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies were firing from all angles on Monday in the Canisteo Valley.

With Hannah Powers establishing her presence from within the circle early on, the offense used a mixed bag of special teams and some timely hits to bring the first six runs across against host Canisteo-Greenwood, dispatching a sixth victory in their first eight games in the midst of what was a 10-1 cruise past the Lady Chargers.

After Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-2) used the first inning to capitalize on a pair of Canisteo-Greenwood errors, they built on their foundation a short time later in the next frame, posting two more runs to create a 4-0 lead — one of those runs being driven in on an RBI double from Powers. In three of the last four innings, the visitors utilized the activation of their special teams, scoring six more runs behind the combination of six Lady Chargers errors and four walks.

The offense produced only two hits at the plate to set up shop, with Powers and her 2-for-3 outing leading the way. Madison Tarar chipped in with a double, while Jenna Hill and Whitney Young both had a hit to register.

In the last two innings of play, the ball in the circle was handed off to Kate Calanni, as she helped cement the victory further behind three strikeouts in relief.

The Lady Chargers were led by Harper Burd both at the plate and in the circle, as she accounted for the team’s lone hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, leading off with a double before scoring the team’s lone run on error. Burd also pitched all seven innings for the hosts, handing out six strikeouts to pair with four walks.

NUNDA — You want to talk about surviving by the skin of your teeth? In their Monday evening trip to the Woodlynn Hills Golf Course in Nunda, the Genesee Valley/Belfast golfers did just that, and it was the leading round of Grant Preston that aided in making a big difference, as he bucketed another medalist round honor to set the music on the team’s 215-216 victory over the host Keshequa Wildcats.

Preston was at the top of the Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-1) scorecard at the end of the night, posting the match’s lowest round of 49 to fuel the team’s victory. Right behind him was Will Guilford, who chipped in with a round of 52. Jackson Barney recorded a 56, while Afton Hamer rounded off with his round of 58.

“I can say that I did not expect to be 5-1 with four, five new kids in the rotation for this season, but three of them have been with the program for a while now, and they came to practice and got better. Now it’s their turn to play,” GV/Belfast coach Lisa Scott-Schneider said. “I am pleasantly surprised and proud of them all. Grant has won medalists in each of our first six matches. He loves the game, loves the practices and loves to play. It’s pure dedication. This is a great start that we have, and I hope for even more consistency as the season rolls on.”
