Tuesday Roundup: Outstanding pitching by Barkley allows Wolverines to roll past And/Whi late in rain-saturated 11-1 home victory; Fillmore tennis sweeps B-R, C-R baseball downed by Salamanca

BOLIVAR — The weather outside was not pleasant by any means. There was plenty of precipitation and plenty of wind gusts to go with all the unfriendly clouds in the sky, in the midst of Mother Nature’s temper tantrum on Tuesday to force the cancellation of many contests across the Allegany County area.

For the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg however, they waited until the forecast subsided to turn the lights on for battle on the turf against Andover/Whitesville.

At one point leading up to the start of the game, the storm also featured many crackles of thunder and flashes of lightning. Although it ceased in the sky, it continued wavering on the baseball field. As for the reason why?

Landon Barkley. Enough said.

Across all six innings of play, the Wolverines senior was simply electric during his time on the rubber, holding Andover/Whitesville at a near standstill while he controlled the game. As a result, Barkley froze the visiting opposition to just four hits while striking out a season-high 16 batters, walking two in addition to set up a dominant victory for the defending Class C2 Champions, as they strolled towards an 11-1 home victory.

The Wolverines (5-2) offense was able to build off of Barkley’s sparkling performance on the hill right from the start, with Braden Zilker and Ryder Iantorno each coming away with an RBI single each to break the ice with a 2-0 lead early on in the first inning. Their advantage was extended a short time later in the second before Andover/Whitesville fired back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth.

With a 3-1 lead in hand down the stretch, Bolivar-Richburg’s offense flipped the switch into maximum overdrive to close out the night, as they journeyed on to score the next eight runs in consecutive fashion — six of them coming in the bottom of the fifth off an array of runs on special teams working their way across, to officially lock up the victory.

When it was all said and done, the Wolverines registered their 11 total runs off seven hits at the dish, with Mason Baldwin and his 2-for-3 outing leading the way. Tavyn MacDonell blasted a triple, while Barkley recorded a double.

Andover/Whitesville (2-3) was paced by Rogan Perkins, who had two of the team’s four hits. Vinny Joyce and Colton Calladine had a hit each to round off the attack. On the mound, Gavin Frungillo went the first two innings with two strikeouts and a walk. The team is right back to action over the road today, as they visit Genesee Valley/Belfast at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast at 5 p.m.

Up next for Bolivar-Richburg, weather permitting, is a Thursday night visit to Wellman Field in Friendship for a 5 p.m. clash with host Friendship/Scio.

Salamanca 11, Cuba-Rushford 1 (F-5)

SALAMANCA — With the rain coming down in buckets leading up to gametime in Salamanca, it did not show any signs of slowing the host Warriors down one bit on Tuesday, as they ripped and roared right from the start against visiting Cuba-Rushford to deliver a five-inning victory by an 11-1 count at Vets Park.

Stats and a complete box score were not made available to report upon publication.

The Rebels (2-4) will have a quick turnaround tonight back on the road, visiting Friendship/Scio at Wellman Field in Friendship in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

BOYS TENNIS

Fillmore 5, Bolivar-Richburg 0

HOUGHTON — Although Mother Nature continued to wreak widespread havoc across the area, the Fillmore and Bolivar-Richburg tennis teams went indoors to the Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse at Houghton University on Tuesday to duke it out on the tennis court.

Despite the conditions, the undefeated Eagles were red hot from the start, as they slammed their foot down on the gas against the Wolverines to push towards a 6-0 start this Spring after a 5-0 shutout.

Fillmore (6-0) has not missed a beat to start their campaign and their battle against Bolivar-Richburg was no different, as they used five dominant performances across the board to set up shop, with Isaiah Sisson, Ezra Schilke and Brayden Walton all leading the charge in the singles matches. Sisson and Walton each recorded a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in their respective matches at first and third singles to claim victory over Bolivar-Richburg’s Trevor Whitsell and Kaitlyn Lutes.

Ezra Schilke finished off the sweep with his 6-1, 6-0 win over Jamie Werner at second singles.

In the doubles department, the first doubles team of Carson Sanasith and Ezra Knapp continued the momentum shift with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Starlyn Kisel and Samuel Martin, while the second doubles duo of Kallan Sanasith and Levi Russell closed up shop with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Adalyn Griswold and Kya Lutes.

“I am really proud of Brayden, Kallan and Levi. They are my three least experienced players in the lineup each night out, and they have really shown a lot of improvement over the last month.” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch.
