Saturday Roundup: Harris helps mount 2nd half comeback for Lady Wolverines with hat trick to jet towards 4-2 win at Port A; Fri/Scio, And/Whi girls finish in 1-1 tie for 2nd time this season
PORT ALLEGANY — Bolivar-Richburg would have to overcome a very electric start from host Port Allegany right off the hop, Saturday morning. With it, the advantage was kept intact despite the Lady Wolverines finding their way onto the board later on to tie the game.
After a brief discussion amongst themselves at the break, the Lady Wolverines would go on and run the table in the last 40 minutes. They have McKinlee Harris to thank for that.
The Bolivar-Richburg senior turned out the lights and lowered the curtains on the Lady Gators with an electrifying performance of her own. After assisting on the team’s first goal, she would go on and score three of her own, completing a massive second half hat trick to rally the Lady Wolverines back for the 4-2 victory over the road.
Before the Lady Wolverines (5-5) saw their second half rally come to fruition, they would have to work their way past a rapid start from Port Allegany and the game’s first goal coming in the first five minutes of the game. After a battle through the midfield for the majority of time left on the clock, Malayna Ayers would break through with the game-tying goal off a pass from Harris that went straight up the middle, firing it over the netminder and in with 7:52 to go.
The Lady Gators would then reclaim the lead right before time expired with 2:17 left to go, putting Bolivar-Richburg back behind the eight ball going into the second half. In the last 40 minutes however, it was all McKinlee Harris’ to control.
The game would work its way towards another tie — the last of the morning with 25:18 left to play, as Madigan Harris dished out assists on her first two goals, with the beginner coming off a drop pass back to her sister, firing in a shot adjacent to the Port Allegany 18 to provide the deadlock. Later on, Harris would break the deadlock that she would apply towards the very end by scoring her last two goals in a span of two minutes.
The arsenal was unloaded to pull the Lady Wolverines back ahead with 6:21 left in regulation, as Madigan shifted forward a pass to McKinlee that she would finish off with another high-rising shot above the Port Allegany keeper to give them control of the lead. A lead that they would build on minutes later at the 4:01 mark with McKinlee’s hat trick-clincher on a penalty kick, firing the free shot through the hands of the keeper and into the net to finish off the comeback.
Bolivar-Richburg would outshoot Port Allegany by a 12-4 count, with Kyla Gayton setting aside two shots to claim victory in between the posts.
Up next is a trip back home on Monday, as the Lady Wolverines get set to welcome in Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. battle at Dunsmore-Latimer Field.
Fillmore 4, Cuba-Rushford 0
FILLMORE — All the Lady Eagles of Fillmore needed was a quick start to turn the key to their engines. Two minutes, it was the beginning of another phenomenal game for Grace Russell, who provided a first half hat trick to set up shop for the team’s 4-0 shutout win over visiting Cuba-Rushford, Saturday night under the lights.
“A full day of action at Fillmore today, and we’re ready for some rest. We had a busy week against some quality opponents,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “We had a big game against Allegany-Limestone the other day, and we were concerned there might be a letdown after no practice yesterday. We weren’t sure how they would come out, but overall we played a good game. We’re still trying a few things out and it’s coming along. Our defense is playing very well, and it makes life for our offense a bit easier. Grace had some nice shots tonight, Hope (Russell) was drawing the defense and Malory (DeRock) was a workhorse.”
The early beginning for Russell and the Lady Eagles (9-0) started just two minutes in, as Hope Russell handed off one of two assists heading into the Cuba-Rushford zone to kick it off. With the lead in hand, the hosts in green would now build, as Russell added two more goals in the 15th and 30th minutes of the half to stretch their advantage to three, entering halftime.
The scoring would conclude towards midway of the second half with Hope Russell netting a goal of her own off a pass from Grace, capitalizing on the final goal of what was Fillmore’s 12-shot night on offense, as they outshot the Lady Rebels (4-4) by a 12-2 count.
Preslee Miller made both stops to earn the win for the Lady Eagles, while Tara Duvall made eight saves for the Lady Rebels.
Both teams are back on the field Monday night, with Fillmore remaining home to welcome in Friendship/Scio for a 7 p.m. opening kick, while Cuba-Rushford continues their road swing to Bolivar-Richburg for a 5 p.m. battle of their own.
Andover/Whitesville 1, Friendship/Scio 1
WHITESVILLE — For the second time this season, Friendship/Scio and Andover/Whitesville would come together and tread on even ground, and they would end the game the exact same way.
After tying in their first round battle right at the beginning of the season in Genesee Valley’s season-opening tournament, the two foes did it all over again just under a month later in Whitesville, with a goal in each half being awarded to bring the game towards a 1-1 tie that could not be broken after 100 complete minutes of play.
A midfield battle between both teams would develop for much of the first 40 minutes of play. With some attempts at cracking through one another’s defense followed suit, it would create the first break right at the midway mark from Andover/Whitesville (0-7-2), as Kennedy Bledsoe finished off a big penalty kick deep in the Friendship/Scio zone to give them the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The lead was theirs to hold onto and control, but Friendship/Scio (3-4-2) would have other plans in store within the first 10 minutes. Right near nine minutes removed from the clock, Cierra Davenport flipped the script with the game-tying goal. The score was just one of two shots that the visitors would have on the Andover/Whitesville net all game, as they were outshot by a 14-2 total count.
The 1-1 deadlock would remain in place for the remainder of the game, despite multiple opportunities for each side to try and break it, as both teams settled on their second tie of the season.
Olivia Waters would set aside one shot for the hosts, while Grace Drumm made 13 saves for Friendship/Scio.
On Monday, both teams will hit the road for a pair of 7 p.m. first kicks, with Andover/Whitesville heading to Judy Bliven Field in Belmont to meet Genesee Valley/Belfast, while Friendship/Scio pays a visit to undefeated Fillmore.
BOYS SOCCER
Friendship/Scio 2, Jasper-Troupsburg 1
TROUPSBURG — Jordan White and Ethan Davenport provided Friendship/Scio with a solid 1-2 punch over the road on Saturday. Because of it, they would grab a first half lead to work with going into the break.
But then some late stage heroics began to unfold, which would allow the host Jasper-Troupsburg Wildcats to re-enter the fray with the game-tying goal right near the homestretch. With the game tied, Friendship/Scio would have one final card to play in the shape of a go-ahead goal with under four minutes remaining, which would help them springboard towards victory by a 2-1 count in the end.
White and Davenport were responsible for recording two big goals to start and end the battle on the highest of notes for Friendship/Scio (3-6). In between their goals, Jasper-Troupsburg made a late push coming down the stretch with under 13 minutes remaining, netting the game-tying goal to put added pressure up against their visiting opposition.
But Friendship/Scio was able to hang on in the end, surviving a whole lot of bending from the Wildcats to record the go-ahead goal with 3:26 left to play, taking a lead that they held onto for so long, back officially for good.
Further statistics were not available to report upon publication.
Friendship/Scio will return home for a 5 p.m. first kick with the Hinsdale Bobcats coming on Tuesday, in Friendship.
Houghton Academy 7, Hinsdale 0
HOUGHTON — The Houghton Academy offense saw an outstanding tenure of offense blossom into big things Saturday on their home turf, as four different goal-scorers had a helping hand in collecting a 7-0 victory over visiting Hinsdale to collect their fourth straight win after starting the season 2-2.
Brian Patipewe scored an eight-point afternoon on the attack for the Panthers (6-2), finding the back of the Hinsdale net three times and handing out helpers on two different occasions to kick the tires. Josh Davidson added in two goals himself, while Lucas Matias scored a goal and two assists. Furthering the cause was Pedro Rebello, who rounded off with a goal and assist, while Shams Zia handed out an assist of his own.
Houghton Academy would total 22 shots on the Hinsdale (1-7) net, with Ethan Chapman making 15 saves for the Bobcats, who continue their road swing into Friendship on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. contest against host Friendship/Scio.
On the other end, the win was awarded to Marco Zanini, who went on to make all five saves on the shots he saw to record the shutout for the Panthers.
Houghton Academy is back at it Monday night with a 5 p.m. contest on their home field once more, hosting Andover/Whitesville.
Fillmore 9, Cuba-Rushford 1
FILLMORE — Seven different goal scorers all had a hand in making Fillmore’s Homecoming weekend a complete success, including one of Section V’s best in Mitch Ward, who had another fiery night on the field with a hat trick and three assists to complete his nine-point night on offense in the team’s 9-1 rolling against visiting Cuba-Rushford on Saturday.
“It was a great night for us to cap Homecoming weekend,” said Eagles coach Jarrett Vosburg. “There was a lot of selfless play by the boys, and it led to great possession soccer and seven different goal scorers. For me to even mention one of my players individually as a difference maker would be a disservice to the incredible play we had as a team. My hat goes off to the boys for truly representing what it means to be a Fillmore Eagle on an important night for the program.”
The Eagles (8-0) scored nine goals in all, starting the night off with a 3-0 lead before adding onto it with six more goals from five more different scorers aside from Ward, who completed his hat trick five minutes after Eben Schilke started the second half with his unassisted tally.
Following Ward on the attack were Noah Strickland, Henry Sardina, Aiden Wagner, Damon Wood and Henry Decker, who all had a goal to add in. On special teams, Sardina and Zach Sisson each handed out a pair of helpers, while Layton Sanasith added one more of his own. The Eagles offense wound up collecting 23 total shots as a unit to pace their efforts.
As for the Rebels (3-7), they were able to eliminate the shutout 41 seconds after Fillmore scored their final tally of the game, as Anderson Siegel found the back of the net off a pass from Kaden Bell — one of two shots that the Eagles defense would limit them to.
In goal, Luke Colombo grabbed the win behind one save, while Cuba-Rushford’s Adam Shaffer set aside 12 saves — an effort that Vosburg commended the Rebels keeper on, saying that “Special recognition goes out to Adam Shaffer. He had an incredibly difficult task tonight, and he was able to make some incredible saves for his team, at least six or seven of them. He was fantastic.”
Both teams will have 5 p.m. contests to partake in coming up on Tuesday over the road, with Cuba-Rushford heading out to visit red hot Houghton Academy — winners of four straight, while Fillmore pays a visit to Bolivar-Richburg for a colossal battle of undefeated titans at Dunsmore-Latimer Field.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Cuba-Rushford 3, Fillmore 0
FILLMORE — A tough, fierce battle unfolded right from the beginning inside The Rock in Fillmore.
With back and forth points being exchanged, an opening was created along the way. One that was made by the visiting Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, as they found the winning two points in a long first set to build off of, creating a straight-set win (27-25, 25-17, 25-17) over the host Lady Eagles in the process on Saturday.
“We are definitely learning every match,” said Lady Rebels coach Josh Tompkins. “I’m glad with how the girls stuck with it even though we didn’t have our best performance. They stuck it out, and in the end we did what we needed to do. We are looking forward to a busy week coming up, and this game will help us with that.”
A strong outing of offense was jump-started by the combined forces of Liliah Stroud and Bri Green for the Lady Rebels (3-3), as they combined to produce 11 kills. Adding help along the way was Lauren O’Keefe, who had a solid night from the service line with eight team-high aces to pair with four additional kills and four digs on defense. Setter Kendall Tompkins chipped in by handing out 18 assists, along with five aces and one kill.
Fillmore (3-4) was led by Zoe Hubbard, who handed out 10 assists to go along with three aces, while Emma Beardsley had two more aces to chip in from the line.
Both teams are back in action Monday night on their home floors, as Cuba-Rushford returns home to host Hinsdale in a 7:30 p.m. first serve, while the Lady Eagles look to rebound with a 6 p.m. contest back in The Rock against Hammondsport.
Houghton Academy 3, Hinsdale 0
HOUGHTON — Jess Prentice headed a strong offensive effort for the Lady Panthers of Houghton Academy, as she posted a team-high 12 kills, five digs, four aces and two blocks to propel the team back above .500 on the season with a straight-set victory over visiting Hinsdale on Saturday by a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 count.
“It was a good game with a lot of good rallies and saves. Some of our younger players really stepped up and passed well. Hinsdale is a much improved team this year.” said Lady Panthers coach Kathie Hilsher.
Adding to the efforts for Houghton Academy (3-2) was Jessica Adenuga, who recorded nine kills of her own and four aces from the service line. Bella Stevens rounded off with five more aces to contribute, and one kill.
Hinsdale (1-5) was led by Hannah Sutton on both offense and defense, tallying a team-high 12 digs to pair with eight kills and two aces. Setter Jamilyn Jimerson handed out a game-high 15 assists, adding 10 digs and four more aces along with it. The Lady Bobcats are back on the road Monday night with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford.
Houghton Academy will now get set to welcome in Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 6 p.m. first serve on Wednesday.
Allegany-Limestone 3, Bolivar-Richburg 0
BOLIVAR — It was a dominant start that the Lady Gators of Allegany-Limestone provided that would ultimately help them set the tone for their Saturday morning road trip to Bolivar-Richburg. Despite a couple of big spurts to bounce their way back into the game, the rebounding effort from the Lady Wolverines would fall just short in what was a straight-set defeat (25-18, 25-14, 25-17).
The Lady Gators established their dominance right out of the gate in the opening set, building a lead over Bolivar-Richburg (3-2) by as much as 10 coming down the homestretch. The rally was on for the Lady Wolverines after scoring eight of the next 13 points in the midst of a 20-10 deficit, but their opposition would finish up the victory to ward off the push.
The Lady Wolverines would come back and turn up the heat in the last two sets, getting as close as four in the second set and then working their way towards a 13-13 tie in the last. But the Lady Gators would remain vigilant, especially to close out the afternoon, as they finished with 12 of the next 16 points — seven of them coming in a row after the tie to take the lead back for good.
Kori Thomas led the offense for the hosts with eight team-high kills, pairing them with 13 digs and nine blocks at the net. On defense, it was Haley Mascho who recorded a team-high 15 digs. Brena Walp had 12 digs and six kills to add in.
Up next for Bolivar-Richburg is a visit from the Olean Lady Huskies on Monday, beginning in a 6:30 p.m. first serve.
Genesee Valley/Belfast at Avoca/Prattsburgh — No Report.
GIRLS TENNIS
Wellsville 4, Fillmore 1
HOUGHTON — Despite a dominant victory from Fillmore’s Olivia Chiu, the Lady Lions of Wellsville woke up bright and early Saturday morning and delivered their eighth straight win to start their season, coming up with a 4-1 victory over the road at Houghton University against host Fillmore.
The Lady Lions (8-0) victory was powered by a sweep of doubles action, and headed by the first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Hanna Miles, who fought their way through both a first-set tiebreak and second-set shutout to deliver a comeback finish against the team of Kali White and Kristina Wilcox for the Lady Eagles.
Kelsey Seely and Mackenzie Weinhauer would also fight their way through a first-set tiebreak for the visitors in the opening set, using the momentum to complete a 7-5, 6-1 straight-set victory at second doubles over Emma Hopkins and Annika Wiltsey.
In the singles matches, Sarah Mattison and McKenna Wonderling would finish off the match win for the Lady Lions with triumphs of their own, with Mattison taking a 6-2, 6-3 win over Clair Schilke at second singles, and a 6-3, 6-0 win for Wonderling at third singles over Molly Mahoney.
