Monday Roundup: Patipewe, Matias each net pair for Panthers to set up 5th straight victory in 5-1 rolling at And/Whi; B-R girls split season series vs C-R with home win

ANDOVER — Since their defeat to the hands of Northstar a mere two weeks ago, the Panthers of Houghton Academy have been on an absolute roll. In the midst of their four-game tear, they have outscored their opponent by a 16-3 margin against Friendship/Scio, Cuba-Rushford, Alfred-Almond and Hinsdale.

On a brutal Monday night that saw on-and-off rain, wind and the temperature taking a big dip, it could create some less than ideal conditions. But that would not steer the Panthers away from keeping their blaze aflame, as they kept it lit in Andover with a first half lead that was constructed even further in the back half of the game with three more goals to secure their fifth straight win by a 5-1 count over host Andover/Whitesville.

“We’ve been tweaking things around on the field, and I think we’ve finally settled ourselves into the roles and positions that we really want to have,” said Panthers coach Jeff Prentice. “It’s been exciting for the last couple of weeks to see these guys complement one another, and to help each other out. It’s been the biggest difference, and seeing guys like Brian (Patipewe) and Lucas (Matias) set up and do really well for us all year, they’re doing an even better job of finding each other.”

Brian Patipewe and Lucas Matias have been two big pistons that have made Houghton Academy’s (7-2) engine roar for the last couple of weeks, each continuing it with two more goals to ignite the offense in another successful showing on the field, despite the less-than-ideal conditions.

Both Panthers would score a goal in each half, with Patipewe kicking off right out of the gate in the first 10 minutes with his to give them the early lead. It was held until Andover/Whitesville (1-9) found a way to respond by tying the game at one with 8:08 left to go, with CJ Estep finding his way through the Houghton Academy defense to knock in the lone goal to create even playing ground.

But it would not last long. Nearly three minutes removed, Matias would find the board himself to give the visitors in white and blue the lead going into the break, connecting with Shams Zia with 5:19 left to play to pick up a 2-1 halftime lead.

In the last 40 minutes, the firing of cylinders would commence for the Panthers — three second half goals to distance a 2-1 lead even farther away from Andover/Whitesville, with Matias, Zia and Patipewe all scoring to secure the team’s lead for good in what was a stellar 27-shot performance for the offense.

Marco Zanini would see just four shots from Andover/Whitesville, stopping three of them to earn the win for Houghton Academy, while Landon Ordway made 22 saves for the hosts, who now pay a visit to Bolivar-Richburg on Thursday in a 7 p.m. first kick.

Houghton Academy will turn right around and look for their sixth straight win tonight back home, as they host Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. contest.

GIRLS SOCCER

Genesee Valley/Belfast 2, Andover/Whitesville 0

BELMONT — It was as strong of a night that Genesee Valley/Belfast has had numerous times this season, on Monday. Despite the inclement conditions, the United team, led by a spectacular display of defense, navigated their way towards a seventh win in their first nine games by shutting out visiting Andover/Whitesville at Judy Bliven Field with a 2-0 victory in The Jungle.

“We dominated most of the half, and we could not connect with more than one great opportunity. These young ladies are doing some really nice exchanges and just can’t get the exclamation point on it,” said GV/Belfast co-coach Lisa Scott-Schneider. “I know we will only get better at that, and hopefully we will click on all cylinders before Sectionals. We’re taking things one game at a time like we have all season. This is our sixth shutout this year, which just speaks volumes about the defense.”

Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-2) garnered a goal in each half of play to set up shop against Andover/Whitesville, taking a 1-0 lead into the break after their first came near midway from Hannah Southwick-Powers, who scored both of the team’s goals, beginning at the 24:01 marker after connecting with Lauren Haggstrom on a rush into the offensive zone.

The lead would hold until both teams battled all across the midfield through much of the second half. With the defense continuing to keep the fort held down, the offense would create one final opening they would puncture with 4:34 left in the game, as Southwick-Powers fired home her second blast off a pass provided along by Harley Proctor to finish off the win.

In all — a 14-0 outshooting on offense for Genesee Valley/Belfast over Andover/Whitesville (0-8-2), with Ashley Burrows being credited with the shutout in goal, her sixth of the season.

On the other end, Olivia Waters made 12 saves for the visitors, who will now get set for a 6 p.m. home contest back in Andover against undefeated Fillmore on Thursday.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to advance their momentum into Wednesday night on the road, as they get set for a 7:30 p.m. battle with the Wellsville Lady Lions.

Bolivar-Richburg 4, Cuba-Rushford 1

BOLIVAR — It has been the case all season for the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg. The Harris twins — McKinlee and Madigan, are the main driving forces of their success. They are the spark plug that helps make the team’s automobile drive.

It was no different on a gloomy Monday fall evening at Dunsmore-Latimer Field against visiting Cuba-Rushford. Although both teams were able to connect with a goal in the beginning stages of each half, resiliency started to show.

That being the case for the Harris siblings, with Madigan starting it off with Bolivar-Richburg’s go-ahead goal which would start a huge string of them soon after from McKinlee, who went on to complete a hat trick-netting performance to assist in garnering a 4-1 home victory to split their season series with the Lady Rebels.

“The overall team effort tonight was excellent. It’s nice to see things clicking as we approach the end of the season,” said Lady Wolverines coach Brooke Lovell. “Offensively, we have worked hard to improve possessing the ball and capitalize on scoring opportunities. Tonight, we were able to do that. McKinlee and Madigan are an integral part of our offense, so it was really nice to see them have some success.”

Right from the get-go, Bolivar-Richburg (6-5) was the first team to get on the board after the opening kick, with McKinlee Harris netting the first of three goals off a pass from Madigan near the top of the Cuba-Rushford 18, one that would slither right up the middle for a shot to find the far left post netting that saw them garner the 1-0 lead just two minutes in.

It would remain as such all the way to the end of the first half, but the Lady Rebels (4-5) were able to build a momentous spark on defense to carry into the second half. It would blossom into a game-tying goal from Sofia Riquelme on the way back out, as she connected with Riley Keller and her initial shot in towards the Lady Wolverines goal, redirecting it next to the post and in.

Not even two minutes removed from the deadlock that was provided, it was cut immediately by Madigan Harris and her go-ahead goal from McKinlee, who exchanged a plethora of passes into the offensive zone before Madigan was able to fire off a clutch shot to the top right corner of the cage to take the lead.

From that point on, it was Bolivar-Richburg’s game to control, as they added two more pieces of insurance from McKinlee to seal up the victory, and the hat trick performance with goals from two more assists by Madigan at the 23:39 and 10:20 marks of the second half.

The four goals were part of an eight-shot effort on the attack for the Lady Wolverines, as they outshot Cuba-Rushford by an 8-4 count. In between the pipes, Kyla Gayton made three saves for the win, while Tara Duvall had four for the Lady Rebels, who will now travel to Belfast to visit Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 7 p.m. contest on Friday.

Bolivar-Richburg will prepare for a 5 p.m. home battle right back at Dunsmore-Latimer Field on Thursday against Friendship/Scio.

Fillmore 9, Friendship/Scio 0

FILLMORE — Through the first 40 minutes of play on Monday, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore would come out swinging for the fences, laying the lumber down on six goals to establish a lead that they would never lose against visiting Friendship, as they became the first team to 10 wins this season by reaching that marker consecutively after a 9-0 shutout win.

Hope Russell had an enormous night for the Lady Eagles (10-0), piling on five goals, including a first half hat trick, and handing out one helper to Malory DeRock on the game’s opening goal right in the first minute of play. DeRock would finish with two goals herself, with her last coming with 10 minutes remaining in the stanza off a Grace Russell assist — one of five total she would have.

Russell would also score a goal along with Madi Geertman, while CeCe Schmidt, Amelia Rose and Oakley Frazier all handed out assists to power up a 21-shot offense for Fillmore. The Lady Eagles in turn, would hold Friendship/Scio (3-5-2) to just three shots, as Preslee Miller and Rachel Hatch combined to make all three stops for the shutout.

Grace Drumm would make 12 saves in between the posts for Friendship/Scio.

Both teams are back on the field over the road Thursday night, as Fillmore goes for 11 in a row with a 6 p.m. road battle against Andover/Whitesville, in Andover, while Friendship/Scio continues their road swing into Bolivar-Richburg for a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Wellsville 3, Avoca/Prattsburgh 0

AVOCA — The Lady Lions of Wellsville, since the inception of their campaign, have been on fire indoors on the volleyball court. On Monday, a dominant conclusion to the evening over the road allowed them to keep igniting it behind a straight-set sweep of host Avoca/Prattsburgh, taking the 25-19, 25-10, 25-8 decision to record their sixth win in first seven games.

Propelling the Lady Lions (6-1) towards great success was a nice night on offense from Natalie Adams, who recorded a team-high five kills to pair with two aces from the service line. Averee Palmatier was excellent in service, garnering five aces of her own, while Lindsey Stuck chipped in with three kills and three aces. Setter Maddy Parks handed out 16 assists to keep the offensive rhythm moving towards a dominant finish in what was their fifth straight win.

Stats for Avoca/Prattsburgh were not made available to report upon publication.

Wellsville will continue their road swing on Wednesday, visiting Fillmore in a 7:30 p.m. first serve.

Fillmore 3, Hammondsport 1

FILLMORE — Before the red hot Lady Lions of Wellsville come to town on Wednesday, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore wanted to make sure they were more than ready for the next task at hand.

Despite a first-set loss to the hands of visiting Hammondsport, Fillmore’s bounce back would become even greater by scoring victories in each of the next three sets of gameplay to bring the action to a close, as the Lady Eagles strolled past the Lady Lakers with a four-set, 21-25, 25-18, 25-11, 25-17 triumph inside The Rock on Monday.

On the attack, Savannah Hosmer was excellent for the Lady Eagles (4-4), recording team-highs in aces with nine, and kills with five to fuel up the engines. Skylar Gaddy helped the cause with seven aces of her own to go with two kills, while Jenna Austin had three kills.

On defense, Abby Engler was clutch keeping the ball off the floor, tallying 10 game-high digs, while setter Zoe Hubbard fed off the momentum with 16 assists to hand out at the net.

The Lady Eagles will face Wellsville back inside The Rock come Wednesday night, beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m.

Houghton Academy 3, Archbishop Walsh 0

HOUGHTON — Jessica Prentice was simply lights out for the Lady Panthers of Houghton Academy, as her offensive presence would provide a big impact from start to finish against visiting Archbishop Walsh, allowing them to roll away towards victory by a 25-12, 25-10, 25-17 count to record the straight-set win on their home floor on Monday.

Prentice was on fire all game for the Lady Panthers (4-2), collecting a game-high 10 kills to pair alongside two aces and a block. Helping further the cause was Jessica Adenuga, who chipped in with a strong defensive effort with six kills, adding them alongside five aces and two more kills on the attack. Setter Abby Reitnour had seven assists to hand out, five aces and one additional kill.

Houghton Academy is now off until they return to their home floor again on Wednesday, hosting Genesee Valley/Belfast at 6 p.m.

Olean 3, Bolivar-Richburg 0

BOLIVAR — Some strong finishes in the late stages for Olean on the volleyball court would help pay some major dividends in their road trip to Bolivar-Richburg on Monday, as the Lady Huskies exited town and back home to the west with a straight-set win over the Lady Wolverines in hand, taking the 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 decision in its entirety.

Sandwiched in between two dominant early stage runs from the Lady Huskies was perhaps Bolivar-Richburg’s (3-3) best chance to tie the match up, as they forced a 13-13 tie right near the midway point of the second set. After some back and forth battling between the two teams, Olean was able to find the opening they wanted to pull themselves away and out of reach of the Lady Wolverines to hang on, en route to the straight set win.

Despite the loss, the hosts saw a strong night of offense from Brena Walp, who recorded a team-high six kills, five digs and three aces from the back line. On defense, Kori Thomas (two blocks) and Haley Mascho (one ace) both chipped in digs of their own to keep the ball off the floor, recording seven and six respectively.

Bolivar-Richburg will now hit the road Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. first serve inside the Wighthouse, as they visit the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Hinsdale 0

CUBA — The first set was all the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford required to make their impact known almost immediately on Monday, as they issued three straight dominant sets against visiting Hinsdale to cement a straight-set win inside the Wighthouse, garnering it with wins of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-11 to move their way back above .500 on the young season.

Bri Green was sublime on the frontlines for the Lady Rebels (4-3), as she posted a game-high 12 kills to pair with two aces from the service line. Helping further those efforts was a solid night of service from Jordyn Radomski on the back line, as she posted six aces to pair with two kills.

Emma Retz would follow suit with five aces of her own and one kill, while the team’s setter Kendall Tompkins dished out 17 assists to set alongside four more aces.

On the other side of the net for Hinsdale (1-6), Jaylee Jimerson recorded six team-high kills to pair with two aces. On defense, Alex Goodyear collected 10 digs, four service points and two aces, while Hannah Sutton added in six more digs to go with five kills and one ace to round off the Lady Bobcats, who are now off until Saturday afternoon with a 12:30 p.m. first serve against Wellsville back home.

Cuba-Rushford will remain inside the Wighthouse for their next battle on Wednesday, hosting Bolivar-Richburg in a 7:30 p.m. first serve.

SWIMMING

Sea Lions dominate in water at Salamanca, push towards 6-0 start

SALAMANCA — Sectionals is right around the corner for the Wellsville Sea Lions. With just a handful of meets left to go before the second season makes its complete arrival, preparations for it march onward and on all of the notes when the team returned to action on Monday, as they provided another dominant performance over the road with a 102-72 victory over Salamanca.

“With just a few regular season meets left to go, the girls are practicing pretty hard,” Sea Lions coach Steve Hand said. “Often times don’t look as fast during the middle of the season when they ramp up, but the girls are continuing to post some quick times. The girls are moving in the right direction. It was awesome to see Morgan get under a minute in the 100 freestyle, the divers looked strong. Kennedy (Ewing) had a nice 500 and Jasmine (Outman) had a Sectional cut in the IM.”

Nine total first place finishes, including two relay events, set the field for another successful and dominant tenure in the water for the Sea Lions (6-0), with Morgan Mattison helping that cause with two individual wins herself — one in each half of the meet, with her first coming in the 200 freestyle, and her last in the 100 freestyle. Wellsville’s two relay victories would stem right in the beginning, in the 200 medley, and directly in the middle from the 200 freestyle relay.

Adding more help individually for the back-to-back Sectional champs was an excellent night on the Diving board from Ashley Oswald, as she recorded a 197.77 score to claim gold. Other triumphant contributors to the team’s sixth-straight win include: Isabelle Hart in the 200 individual medley, Grace Kinnicutt in the 50 freestyle, Hayden Waldon in the 100 butterfly and Kennedy Ewing in the 500 freestyle.

Wellsville will now prepare to go for a seventh straight win back on the road Thursday night, as they visit Letchworth in a 5 p.m. first swim.

Alfred-Almond 4, Fillmore 1

HOUGHTON — Alfred-Almond and Fillmore saw an incredible first singles battle between Olivia Chiu and Candy Zhou come to full fruition at Houghton University on Monday. But despite the best match of the match on the court, it was a night of tennis that was directed in the favor of the Lady Eagles from the east, as Alfred-Almond garnered four wins out of five to take the 4-1 road win.

Alfred-Almond saw two wins come from each division of competition, including a sweep of both doubles matches led by a 10-6 close battle from the first doubles team of Beatrice Beaudry and Anna Yarnal, who knocked off Fillmore’s team of Emma Hopkins and Kristina Wilcox to declare victory.
