Monday Roundup: Big bats by Barkley, Iantorno seal deal for Wolverines, hold off late And/Whi push to score 7-5 road win; B-R softball moves one step closer to clinching County Title with 14-2 win
WHITESVILLE — There was some pretty close quarters sparring that rumbled between Bolivar-Richburg and Andover/Whitesville throughout the entirety of their season series-ending clash on Monday in Whitesville. The Wolverines, despite igniting their bats early, felt immense pressure from their hosts, especially down the stretch to close the gap to a pair of runs.
But regardless of it, the visitors in black and red caught fire with their bats to help lay the foundation down on an advantage they never lost, using two humongous connections in a three-frame span to claim a five-run lead on Andover/Whitesville while the defense buckled down at the most opportune of times to keep their opposition frozen at the plate to secure a close 7-5 road win.
After they initially opened the gate with an immediate 2-0 lead, the Wolverines (11-7) doubled it at an instant after keeping Andover/Whitesville shut off during their opening at-bats, as Landon Barkley broke through in a big way with a pair of base-runners occupying the bags behind the defense, driving both in on a deep triple to the outfield to lay claim on a 4-0 advantage.
Andover/Whitesville (7-9) went on to get two of those runs back again before the two teams traded a pair of scoreless innings in the third. But the damage was done in even further by Bolivar-Richburg, this time by Ryder Iantorno, who signed, sealed and delivered a 7-2 lead by way of a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to branch the advantage to the largest it stood during the contest.
The hosts fought back though, going on to score three straight runs to get all of those runs back — two of them in back-to-back innings from Rogan Perkins and his RBI single in the fifth, followed by an RBI double from Carter Grice in the sixth. In the midst of it: A stellar outing of relief from Brody Vance that kept the Wolverines off the board in the process, as he tossed three straight shutout innings to keep the door ajar for Andover/Whitesville.
Vance finished with four strikeouts and one walk in his three innings of work.
In the end though, the early deficit built by Bolivar-Richburg and their strong presence on offense ultimately proved too much to overcome, as the Wolverines defense kept one final stand from Andover/Whitesville on the bases to finish the game.
The Wolverines collected just four hits, with Barkley leading the bats with two. Jimmy Day had a hit of his own to chip in. On the mound, the win belonged to Braden Zilker, who fanned three and walked three.
For Andover/Whitesville, they also accumulated four hits, with Vance and Colton Calladine each recording a double. On the mound, Calladine went the first four innings, fanning four and walking five.
Both teams will finish their regular seasons tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with the Wolverines hitting the road one more time for a visit to the see the Eagles of Fillmore, while Andover/Whitesville heads over the hill back into Andover for a pair beginning with Cuba-Rushford and ending with a 6:30 p.m. contest against Jasper-Troupsburg.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 10, Canisteo-Greenwood 0 (F-5)
BELMONT — To officially put a cap on their Allegany County Championship-winning regular season, Genesee Valley/Belfast took charge right from the start against visiting Canisteo-Greenwood on Monday behind another excellent performance from Derek Calanni on the mound, holding the Chargers absolutely scoreless while the offense held their end of the bargain to produce a 10-0 home victory inside the Jungle in Belmont.
In just his second start of the season — his first since tossing a no-hitter in his inaugural call to the mound, Calanni powered Genesee Valley/Belfast (18-1) to victory dominantly, holding Canisteo-Greenwood to just five hits, scattering seven strikeouts and just two walks to score the five-inning complete game victory.
Each team posted just five hits, with Genesee Valley/Belfast also added more punctuation during their stands of offense, utilizing seven walks from the Chargers pitching staff. Cuba-Rushford 25, Friendship/Scio 7 (F-5)
CUBA — Senior Night was a complete and total success across the board for the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford on Monday, as they sent all six of their upcoming graduates out in style against Friendship/Scio with a home finale victory by a 25-7 count after five complete innings of action.
“It was nice to send our seniors out with a win. We did a good job after the first two innings with being patient in our at-bats,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “We didn’t strike out at all. Friendship/Scio did a nice job the first two innings keeping it close. They swung the bats well and took advantage of our lack of focus. Senior Night is always tough the first few innings. Thanks to my six seniors for their dedication to the program. They’ve all played since they were sophomores and they will most certainly be missed.”
Friendship/Scio was the first to strike while the iron was hot on the stovetop in the first two innings of play, registering an RBI single from Deacon Brown and a bases-loaded walk to double their early advantage. In the bottom of the second, the bats went to work for the Rebels (8-7) with a seven-run frame — two of those runs on a single by Eli Sleggs before he scored one at-bat later on Dean Frank’s triple to deep left field.
The visitors did not let the frame go unresponsive though, as they countered with RBI singles from Charlie Taylor and Sean Dieter to bridge the gap to just a single run. But that would be as close as they got, as Cuba-Rushford found home plate in every way, shape and form they could, registering the next 18 runs in consecutive fashion to pull away towards victory.
To go with their 25 runs, the Rebels had seven hits to pair with them, with Sleggs and Frank each recording two. Adam Shaffer, Kadin Pierce and Carson Schunk all had a single to chip in. On the mound, Lucas Haskins was granted the victory, fanning six and walking six across his start that elongated into the third inning.
For Friendship/Scio (0-16), they collected six hits, with Dieter’s 2-for-3 outing leading the way. Cooper Greenman had a hit to chip in.
Both teams close out their regular seasons tonight, with the Rebels hitting the road for a 5 p.m. visit to Andover to battle host Andover/Whitesville, while Friendship/Scio heads home for a two-game set with the Hammondsport Lakers beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Scio.

Fillmore 17, Hinsdale 3 (F-6)
HINSDALE — After claiming the game’s first lead in Hinsdale, the Eagles of Fillmore continued to build more and more steam as the battle raged on with the host Bobcats, as they scored at least three runs in each of their last four innings of offensive production to kick the bats into maximum overdrive towards the finish line in what was a 17-3 win after six complete innings.
The Eagles (9-7) used everything they could to assemble their offense from start to finish, after they pieced together a quick 4-0 lead of Hinsdale through the first three innings of play.
Although the Bobcats were able to work their way onto the board in the bottom half of the fourth off RBIs from Caleb Elliott, Jackson Jones and Peyton Keller, they were kept at a standstill by their visiting opposition, who went on to score 13 of the last 16 runs — nine of them in consecutive fashion, including a five-run top of the sixth inning, which pushed their advantage into insurmountable territory to force an early close to the contest.
Out of the 11 hits that the Eagles mustered on offense, Connor McCumiskey led the soar with a 3-for-4 outing that saw the incorporation of four total RBI. James Hillman pitched in two hits, which saw a monstrous home run to go with three total RBI and two runs scored. Isaac Wilcox had two hits to add into the mix, including a double, driving in three more runs and scoring twice.
On the mound, Wilcox collected the win through three innings of work, striking out six and walking seven.

SOFTBALL
Bolivar-Richburg 14, Andover/Whitesville 2
ANDOVER — All the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg needed to do by the end of Tuesday night was to win out. Just two games served as the temporary blockade that stood in their way from capturing this year’s Allegany County League Championship, beginning with their final regular season trip over the road on Monday to Andover/Whitesville.
It was a tight battle amidst its opening sequences, but after the Lady Wolverines collected the lead entering the back half of action, the Andover/Whitesville defense, generated by a strong outing from Olivia Waters in the circle, would keep them frozen in their tracks for as long as they could.
But the ice inside the batter’s box ultimately found a way to unthaw, as Bolivar-Richburg heated up in a flash a short time later. In the last two innings of play, the damage would soon be done, as they went on to score 10 unanswered runs — seven of them in the top of the seventh inning to officially pull away from Andover/Whitesville’s grasp with a 14-2 road victory.
“The kids were able to keep it close for the majority of the game,” Andover/Whitesville coach Al Barber said. “We had a lot of traffic throughout, but we had a hard time getting the big hit to plate a few more when we had the chance to. All in all, the growth that these kids have shown the last 10 days has become very rewarding. Bolivar-Richburg is always a challenge. They come to swing and run the bases with the best of them.”
It was tight sailing through the first three innings, with both Bolivar-Richburg and Andover/Whitesville each remaining deadlocked with a 1-1 tie heading into the third inning. In the top half of the frame, the Lady Wolverines (11-4) made some noise at the plate, scratching across three go-ahead runs — one off a double from Rylee Whiting to aid in the granting of a 4-1 advantage.
Andover/Whitesville (6-10) trimmed their deficit in half a half-inning later with what was their final run before the defenses settled back in to deliver back-to-back shutout innings. But in the top of the sixth, the floodgates began to formulate one giant crack after another as the Lady Wolverines added to their breadbasket three more runs, capitalizing on a slew of errors from the Andover/Whitesville defense.
After keeping the hosts at bay one more time, Bolivar-Richburg put the game away once and for all in their final at-bats, scoring the final seven runs off a mixed bag of offense and special teams to complete a 14-run, 15-hit effort.
Charging the contributions at the dish were both Kylee Whiting and Danika Loucks, as each Lady Wolverine posted three hits. Teegan Sibble had two hits of her own to chip in. On the mound, the win was Rylee Whiting’s to claim after five innings of hard work, as she fanned seven and walked five.
For the hosts, Lilly Ordway and Reece Winters combined for five of the team’s seven total hits, with Ordway’s 3-for-4 outing serving as the captain at the plate. On the mound, Olivia Waters was outstanding through all seven innings, as she struck out 10 and walked three in her complete game.
Andover/Whitesville finishes at 6-10 overall and will now await what their future holds in Sectionals, with seeding set to begin on Wednesday.
As for the Lady Wolverines, they head back home tonight and will look to put a wrap on this year’s Allegany County League crown with a 5 p.m. contest against Friendship/Scio in store at Stan Harris Field in Richburg.

Cuba-Rushford 15, Friendship/Scio 6
CUBA — There was plenty of smoke emitting off of the bat of Emma Bunk for the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford on Monday.
The sophomore unleashed a big bundle of fury almost immediately after she stepped into the batter’s box during her first two appearances against visiting Friendship/Scio, as she drove home five of the team’s first eight runs to provide the brickwork for what wound up being the team’s 15-6 regular season-ending victory.
Bunk was ferocious at the dish to pace Cuba-Rushford’s red hot commencement on offense after the team fell behind in a 1-0 hole to Friendship/Scio, as she served as the centerpiece to three-straight RBI plays for the top of the batting rotation, driving in a pair of runs in between two RBI singles by Aubrey Williams and Claire Moyer to bolt the Lady Rebels (10-8) out towards a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Rebels sophomore was at her best again in the bottom of the second after the defense kept their opposition frozen, this time laying the lumber down from within a second four-run frame, freeing up all the bases on a three-run double to the outfield to bolster their advantage even further.
Cuba-Rushford went on to close out their regular season strongly with an even exchange alongside Friendship/Scio (4-11) through the last four innings of play. In total, the hosts in gray and blue assembled their 15 runs off nine hits, with Moyer’s three-hit performance pacing the way forward. On the mound, Moyer also scored the victory across two innings of work, fanning five and walking one.
Friendship/Scio was led by Avery Lamberson, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. In the circle, Sydney Hadsell went all seven innings, fanning seven and walking six. The team will close out their regular season back on the road tonight, visiting Stan Harris Field in Richburg to take on the host Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg at 5 p.m.
The regular season for the Lady Rebels is now officially history, as they now await Sectional seeding in just a few days from now after finishing with a record of 10-8 overall.

Team Sectionals: Class B3 First Round
No. 8 Alfred-Almond 4, No. 9 Bolivar-Richburg 1
ALMOND — Day one of Team Sectionals on the tennis court officially kicked off on Monday with the No. 9 Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg looking to continue their season outdoors this Spring. But for No. 8 Alfred-Almond, they had other plans in store, as they used a complete sweep of all three singles matches against the Wolverines to claim the match and move onto the Class B3 Quarterfinal round, rolling towards a 4-1 home win.
The Eagles took charge right out of the gate with all three singles matches under their belts, as Patrick Power, Will Lawrence and Luca Reginio all came away victorious in their respective matches, with Lawrence leading the pack with a straight-set shutout over Bolivar-Richburg’s Samuel Martin at second singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Reginio survived a teeter-totter exchange of points across the first set with Genecis Easton, but prevailed after the second set dominantly to score the 6-4, 6-0 win.
Power had the team’s final win in a tough battle with Trevor Whitsell at first singles, as he outlasted his opponent with a strong 6-2, 6-3 finish to clinch the match win for Alfred-Almond.
In the doubles department, the Eagles and their first doubles team of Jamison Snyder and Leon Beaudry were tangled in a gladiator fight to the finish against Bolivar-Richburg’s Starlyn Kisel and Jamie Werner, with two of their three sets requiring lengthy tiebreakers. After rolling in the first set, it was Kisel and Werner that came out on top first to tie the match at one set each side following an 8-6 marathon second set tiebreak. But the momentum shifted back to Snyder and Beaudry to wrap up their clash, edging towards a 7-5 tiebreak win of their own to finish off a 6-1, 6-7, 7-6 win.
The Wolverines grabbed the last doubles victory at second doubles from their squad of Adalyn Griswold and Kaitlyn Lutes, who worked their way past Aeden O’Connor and Calob Diaz by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
