The Allegany County Athletic Association has presented the 2020-2021 Sportsmanship Awards at their beginning of the year ACAA meeting to the following schools:

Boys Sportsmanship Award winner — Belfast

Girls Sportsmanship Award winner — Cuba-Rushford

Overall Sportsmanship Award winner — Genesee Valley

The schools in Allegany County are rated throughout the year by all coaches in Varsity sports. Athletes, coaches and spectators are evaluated. The Allegany County Athletic Association would like to congratulate our 2020-2021 winners.

The Allegany County Athletic Association also presented the 2020-2021 Allegany County Service Award and the Paul Vienna Coach of the Year award.

This past season’s Service Award recipient is Darice Mullen.

Darice has been instrumental in bringing the “showtime” to Fillmore Boys Soccer. The announcing, pregame music, starting line-ups, goal music and more has been at the hands of Darice, making Fillmore soccer a community event. She has done this while doing the clock and the book since 1997. On top of that, Darice has been a guiding force behind Cheerleading at Belfast, Fillmore and the entire County. She coached at Belfast in the 80’s & early 90’s and then coached at Fillmore in the 90’s and 00’s. She also served at the County Cheer Coordinator helping to transform Cheerleading into a recognized sport.  Her service spans almost 40 years to the County.

The ACAA’s Paul Vienna Coach of the Year Award from this past year went to Friendship coach Deb Warner.

The girls’ sports program at Friendship have been led by Deb Kane in some capacity for over 25 years. This past year alone she coached Girls Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Softball. Fellow Allegany County Coach, and Fillmore Athletic Director Jon Beardsley shared, “As a fellow coach I admire both Deb’s calming presence, but driven competitiveness.”

Friendship’s Athletic Director, Brad Gertis shared, “Deb is constantly working and trying to get better, she builds a great report with the players.”

This past spring, Deb and the Friendship Softball team won both a County and Section V championship in very impressive fashion. The Section V Championship marked Friendship’s first since 1993. Congratulations to Deb and Friendship on a great year.
