Friday Roundup: Havens scores for Lions, but Red Jacket prevails in 36-6 home win; B-R rolls past C-R in Hyphen Bowl revisit

SHORTSVILLE — The Lions were able to get on the board late in their first road trip of the season to Red Jacket on Friday, but the tone was set early on by the host Indians, as they scored 28 straight points in the first half, 14 in each quarter to provide a spark on offense to roll past Wellsville with a 36-6 victory.

After the Indians established a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, it was extended upon in the next, using their run game to their advantage on both scores, the latter coming off an interception near halftime that resulted in a goal-line score to make it a 28-0 lead at the break.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, Wellsville (0-2) was able to erase the shutout put on by the hosts in red with Alex Perkins connecting with Jere Havens on a short pass deep in the red zone to get the Lions on the board. But the early deficit was too much to overcome.

In-depth statistics were not made available upon publication.

Wellsville will continue the search for their first win of the season next weekend, as they return home to the Lion’s Den to host Holley in a 7 p.m. kickoff under the lights next Friday night.

Bolivar-Richburg 49, Cuba-Rushford 8

CUBA — Alexander won last week’s defensive battle over Bolivar-Richburg to open up the 2021 season. As week two approached, it was a chance for the Wolverines to rebound over the road for their first act of visitation. On Friday, they went to Cuba-Rushford to renew the yearly Hyphen Bowl rivalry with the Rebels.

In that game, a tone was set right away in the first half. All 49 points scored by the Wolverines were on the ground, 35 of them in the first 24 minutes, including a 21-point second quarter that saw them streak away permanently to grab their first win of the season behind a 49-8 decision.

Kadin Tompkins and Ethan Coleman both would help get the run game established for the Wolverines (1-1) early on in the opening quarter, each scoring a touchdown from 45 and 38 yards out to grab the 14-0 lead. Tompkins would branch the lead out to 21 before Rudy Polk and Brayden Ellis each added in short-yardage scores of their own to close out the first half with a 35-0 lead.

The team’s leading rusher, Landon Danaher, got on the board himself as the team’s lone score in the third quarter of play, finding the end zone from five yards out to branch the Bolivar-Richburg lead even farther. Danaher concluded with 17 rushes for 106 yards and his score.

The scoring was finished off by Caden Allen in the fourth quarter, driving into the end zone from four yards away. The Wolverines would also see their kicker, Hunter Stuck, finish the night a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points to fuel the special teams.

But the shutout would find its way toward an end for the Rebels (0-2), as Alex Baron helped cap off Cuba-Rushford’s longest drive of the night with his touchdown from two yards out, with the team completing a two-point conversion along the way.

Tompkins and Coleman would help propel the rush attack for Bolivar-Richburg with nights of their own, as Tompkins concluded with five rushes for 66 yards and two scores, while Coleman finished with two rushes for 67 yards and a score, adding a sack on defense along the way.

Bolivar-Richburg will now look to build off their first win of the season back home at Dunsmore-Latimer Field, as they now host Clyde-Savannah in a Saturday afternoon matinee beginning at 2 p.m. As for Cuba-Rushford, they now hit the road once more to visit Geneseo/Mount Morris next Friday night to continue the search for their first win, beginning at 7 p.m. in Geneseo.

BOYS SOCCER

Keshequa Tourney Consolation: Genesee Valley/Belfast 2, East Rochester 0

NUNDA — A chance for a massive rebound after falling to the hands of host Keshequa back on Wednesday, came upon the horizon for Genesee Valley/Belfast when they made their return to Kiwanis Park to wrap up the week, taking on another Sectional Champion-caliber team — the defending Class C1 champions hailing from East Rochester, in the Consolation round.

It was a duel that saw only eight shots combined between both teams across all 80 minutes that were featured in Friday’s finale. In the midst of the defensive battle, just two of those shots found the back of the net.

Those belonged to Matt Weaver.

The Genesee Valley/Belfast senior made the most of the opportunities the team behind him provided, as he was able to record a pair of first half goals that allowed the ice to be cracked open, creating separation on East Rochester that was never regained in the end, as they bounced back to deliver a 2-0 shutout to the Bombers to end their tournament tenure in style.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-1) managed to outshoot East Rochester by a 5-3 total count across the entirety of the contest, as they used their defense to keep the Bombers in check along the way to keep their lead in tact.

In goal, Garrett Miller picked up his first shutout of the season, making all three stops he saw on goal.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will now look to keep the momentum rolling after the weekend, as they pay a visit to Whitesville to take on Andover/Whitesville in a 5 p.m. contest, Tuesday evening.

Mount Morris 9, Friendship 0

FRIENDSHIP — The Mount Morris Blue Devils created a firestorm across the field in Friendship on Friday, as Payton Bounds had himself a night behind four of the team’s nine goals to go with his assist, wrapping up an nine-point evening for the visitors in white and blue, as they rolled past the host Golden Eagles with a 9-0 shutout.

Of the nine goals scored by Mount Morris, six of them were scored right in the first 40 minutes of play to create the spacing required to keep their lead in tact the entire way to pick up the victory. On the other side, Friendship (0-3) recorded 10 total shots on the Mount Morris net.

In goal for the Golden Eagles, Connor Otero made five stops.

Friendship will return to their home confines after the weekend, as they welcome in Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. visit on Tuesday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Fillmore 3, Arkport/Canaseraga 1

ARKPORT — After garnering a season-opening sweep of Archbishop Walsh over the road, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore went back over the road once again Friday night, and kept the momentum rolling in their favor, as they survived a third-set marathon to end the night with a four-set victory over host Arkport/Canaseraga by a 25-18, 25-19, 25-27, 25-13 victory.

Leading the charge for the Lady Eagles (2-0) on the frontlines was Emma Cole once again, who sparked a team-high 10 kill performance to go with three aces from the service line. Sam Simmons helped the cause from the back with five more aces of her own. Jadyn Mucher chipped in with two kills and two more aces, while setter Zoe Hubbard dished out 10 assists in the front.

The Lady Eagles will go for three straight when they continue their road swing on Tuesday, when they visit Houghton Academy in a 6 p.m. first serve.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Hinsdale 0

CUBA — With a week hiatus now under their belts, the return to action was on for the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford inside the Wighthouse on Friday, as they looked to bounce back after last week’s season opener defeat to the hands of Allegany-Limestone.

With Hinsdale in town, the hosts in blue and white would find their groove early and set the tone for the rest of the match, going on to bring out the brooms in a straight-set sweep of the Lady Bobcats to earn the 25-16, 25-16, 25-6 decision to pick up their first win of the season.

Heading the offensive attack for the Lady Rebels (1-1) was Brianna Green, who provided a superb night from the service line with six team-high aces to pair with five kills and one block at the front of the net. Kendall Tompkins added in four more aces of her own to go with one kill. Setter Quincy Tylor provided six assists of her own to go with four aces.

On the other side of the net, Hinsdale (0-2) was led by Jaylee Jimerson, who recorded four team-high aces and three digs on defense. Hannah Sutton chipped in with two kills and one block, while setter Kylee Leonard dished out five assists to pair with her two digs. The Lady Bobcats will continue their road swing into Genesee Valley/Belfast with a 7 p.m. first serve on Tuesday.

The Lady Rebels are off to Campbell-Savona this morning to take part in tournament action beginning at 8:30 a.m. Their regular season will continue on Monday, when they host Olean back inside the Wighthouse at 7:30 p.m.
