Tuesday Roundup: Wellsville, Hornell come together for tight battle to finish, as each team splits regular season finale; GV/Belfast golf ends campaign with strong win at B-R
WELLSVILLE — After placing in the Top 10 this past weekend at the 90th Annual Elks Club Spring Day in Wellsville, the host Lions and their archrivals to the east: The Hornell Red Raiders, collided one final time this regular season in one-on-one action Tuesday night in the Lion’s Den.
And like all the meetings in the past that these two programs have had, no matter the sport, it was no different this time around. It would come straight down to the wire.
With points coming across left and right, when the final tally was totaled together, the Wellsville and Hornell boys track teams had just a single point separating them. That came in favor of the Red Raiders, while the Lady Lions track squad used a flurry of secondary finishes to overpower Hornell and provide a split of their regular season finale, as both teams now begin to sprint full speed into Sectionals next weekend.
The Hornell boys team used 11 first place finishes to fuel their one-point, 71-70 edging by the slimmest of margins over the Lions to record one half of the split, as Wyatt Argentieri and Brennan Delany concluded as the team’s top performers, with Delany recording four of the top finishes in the 110 hurdles, long jump, triple jump and pole vault. Argentieri followed with his victories in the 100 and 200 dashes. The Red Raiders would also garner two relay victories along the way, tallying winning times in the 400 and 1600 relay events.
Other individual finishers for the visitors include Nathan Wise in the 400 sprint, Jake Phillips in the 400 hurdles and Austin Gollnitz in the high jump.
Wellsville would finish with six first place finishes to go along with 70 total team points for the day, with Noah Joslyn and Grady Ball leading the charge with a pair of wins each, with Joslyn sprinting towards triumph on the track in the 800 sprint and 1600 run, while Ball brought out the broom with a sweep in both throwing events from the field — the shot put and discus. Kamron Dodge had the last individual win for the Lions with his first place win in the 3200 run. The hosts would also garner a 3200 relay victory along the way.
As for the ladies, a slew of secondary finishes by the Lady Lions were able to throw Hornell off-kilter, despite 10 first place finishes for the Lady Red Raiders, as they recorded a 75-58 win behind the guidance of Kaylee Oswald’s big night from the field as well as a pair of relay victories on the track helping further the team’s cause.
Oswald continued her momentum shift from Spring Day on Saturday with another sweep of both throwing events, as she posted winning distances in both the shot put and discus to claim gold. Adding help from the track were Sam Bidzerkowny and Talia O’Connor, as each scored individual wins with their first place triumphs in the 3000 run and 400 hurdles, respectively. From the field, Addy Clark was the lone competitor in the pole vault, as she recorded the win to help the cause.
The Lady Lions also garnered a pair of relay victories, taking first in the 1600 and 3200 relays.
Hornell saw Selena Maldonado and Elaina Flaitz take lead at the front of the pack, combining for five of the team’s 10 individual victories, with Maldonado recording three of them herself on both ends of the spectrum, garnering them in the 200 dash, long jump and triple jump. As for Flaitz, she would also record one on the track and in the field, claiming first in the 100 hurdles and high jump.
Silvia Carretto also had two more wins herself to add into the fray from the track, as she crossed the finish line in the first position to garner wins in the 400 and 800 sprints. Ella White and Elisa Bodin finished off the individual wins for the Lady Red Raiders, as they posted triumphant times in the 100 dash and 1500 run each to pair with their lone relay win in the 400 relay event.
Before Sectionals takes full effect next weekend, the Lions will have a chance to tune up for it, as they host this Friday’s Allegany County Championships beginning at 5 p.m.
Boys Team Scores: Hornell 71, Wellsville 70.
