Monday Roundup: Fri/Scio’s Ross records 1,000th career K, blasts 2-run homer, twirls 3rd shutout of GV/Belfast with 7-0 win; And/Whi softball survives offensive slugfest with Fillmore

BELMONT — She has thrown no-hitters. She can absolutely blast the ball. She has been one of the driving forces behind back-to-back Section V Championships. Because of her countless efforts since the beginning of her journey, she has ascended into one of the County’s finest from within the circle.

Nevaeh Ross can quite literally do it all for Friendship/Scio. Even after everything the Friendship/Scio junior had done in her career leading into the final week of the regular season, there was still another item of note that would assist in cementing her legacy not only from within the walls of her school, but across the county’s history books when her story officially reaches its final page.

Her next career-defining moment would require a magic number. That being five — the number of strikeouts required to eclipse the 1,000 mark in her incredible, illustrious career. To reach the historic marker, it would have to be done against Genesee Valley/Belfast — a team they’ve faced twice already this season.

For the third and final time during Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Senior Night celebration, there was one more line in the sand to draw. With the two foes exchanging pleasantries in the early going, time would pass before the first major crack was brought into the ice.

That time would come in the top of third. Not only did Friendship/Scio play spoiler to Genesee Valley/Belfast, Nevaeh Ross turned it into a night unlike any other.

The Friendship/Scio junior had one of, if not, her best night of the season put on full display for all to see, as she picked up the five strikeouts to eclipse the millennium mark in her career after the first two innings of play. Immediately following, she would add onto it with the team’s game-breaker — a two-run blast to propel them into the driver’s seat once and for all, as the team added on more damage along the way while Ross twirled her third shutout gem against Genesee Valley/Belfast to close out what was a 7-0 blank over the road in Belmont on Monday.

“Nevaeh has made and accomplished great milestones and accomplishments, especially in the past couple of years being on the Varsity program,” said Friendship/Scio coach Deb Warner. “Today just attests the hard work she has really put into her game. Hitting her 1,000 strikeouts and at-bat tonight, going 3-for-3 with that home run. What more can you say? Morghyn (Ross) has been through a chunk of her success, making it all possible while improving as her catcher, and being a great hitter as well.”

It would begin after two scoreless stands between both foes, one that included Ross reaching that historic, monumental marker for Friendship/Scio (15-3) during the bottom half of the frame, as she struck out the side to do it. During the brief break in the action, Ross was presented with a bouquet of flowers and the game ball in which she did it, all from her family and team, as well as receiving a standing ovation by everyone in attendance on and around the field.

But Ross’ memorable day didn’t stop there.

After a wild pitch sent home Friendship/Scio’s first run of the game, Ross delivered a meteor strike to deep center field, sending a crushed ball out of the park for a two-run blast, giving the team a little more wiggle room out front with a 3-0 lead on Genesee Valley/Belfast (8-9).

The visitors in black and gold marched on while maintaining their distance, despite a scoreless fourth that saw Hannah Southwick-Powers deliver a strong relief debut with three straight strikeouts after Friendship placed a runner on base with one out. But the momentum would remain with Friendship/Scio after the fact, as Kadence Donohue delivered a two-run, inside-the-park homer to extend their advantage to five.

After five straight scoreless innings were tossed by Ross, she would add one more big at-bat to complete a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate, blasting an RBI double to the outfield to score Logan Roberts around the bases to extra cushioning to the Friendship/Scio lead.

Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to work their way off, and with it came their best opportunity to knock on the door, jamming all three bags behind Ross in the circle with Hannah Southwick-Powers, Jenna Hill (double) and Ashley Burrows all reaching with one out. But as vigilant as ever, the Friendship/Scio phenom would not let the pressure faze her, as she recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep the door closed, ultimately for good, as they added one more piece of insurance in the top of the seventh to finish off a memorable night on the road.

Ross would hold Genesee Valley/Belfast to just two hits — a double by Hill and single by Southwick-Powers, while handing out 15 total chairs to claim her third shutout against the hosts in black and gray this season. In turn, the Friendship/Scio offense produced 10 hits, with Morghyn Ross finishing with three hits, including the team’s final home run on an inside-the-parker in the seventh, and Kadence Donohue chipping in a triple to pair with her inside-the-park blast.

In the circle for Genesee Valley/Belfast, Southwick-Powers finished with eight strikeouts and two walks in relief of Ashley Burrows, who had four strikeouts and two walks of her own across her three innings of work.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, as Friendship/Scio finishes off their regular season with a visit to Fillmore, while Genesee Valley/Belfast ends theirs back on the road to Alfred-Almond.

Bolivar-Richburg 18, Avoca/Prattsburgh 6

AVOCA — The Lady Titans of Avoca/Prattsburgh were able to use a series of special teams plays out of the gate to get an early jump on visiting Bolivar-Richburg on Monday. Their lead would ascend to as much as six, but all of it was quickly made up a short time later by the Lady Wolverines, as they went on to score 18 straight runs to pull ahead and swipe away the 18-6 win in Avoca.

After overcoming an early deficit to the Lady Titans through the first two innings, every Lady Wolverine (16-2) in the starting lineup would all account for at least a hit at the plate, building an amassment of 22 hits in all to power their offensive outburst, which began in the third inning. Bolivar-Richburg responded by eliminating their entire deficit by using a series of hits and special teams of their own to tie the game with Avoca/Prattsburgh at six.

The offense continued to roll on, as they took the lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run double off the bat of Malayna Ayers — one of two she would record in the battle. The damage would soon be done in the fifth when the Lady Wolverines strung together seven more runs to branch their lead against the Lady Titans. The scoring would conclude in the sixth, as a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Haley Mascho was used as Bolivar-Richburg’s exclamation mark.

The Lady Wolverines would see Mascho take the win in relief, as she came on with five strikeouts across five scoreless innings to keep Avoca/Prattsburgh at bay. On the attack, Mascho and McKinlee Harris each paced the lane towards four hits. Madigan Harris had three hits including a double, while Ayers, Rylee Whiting, Allie Zilker and Jayna Thomas all posted two hits. Madison Carney and Cassidy Stives rounded off the lineup with a hit each.

On the opposite side of the field, Avoca/Prattsburgh saw Carmen Dailey lead the charge with two of the team’s six hits. On the mound, Emma Carlton went the distance, striking out two and walking three.

Bolivar-Richburg is back on the field for their final road battle of the regular season, as they prepare to visit the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford at 5 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville 15, Fillmore 10

WHITESVILLE — 25 combined runs between both teams were strung together to begin their final weeks of the regular season on Monday. But it was a stronger start by host Andover/Whitesville that helped them get the lead they wanted to have on top of visiting Fillmore, as they squeezed their way through and towards a 15-10 victory in Whitesville.

Andover/Whitesville (4-12) would use a combination of offense and special teams around the bases to score the majority of their runs, with Gabby Terhune recording an RBI single to add onto their lead over Fillmore in the first. After Makaila Brewster provided a solid second inning off the board against the Lady Eagles, she would then help give the offense a big push.

With it, the hosts in blue and purple did not hesitate to continue building on, as they scored five runs to take an 8-1 lead going forward. The offense for Fillmore would pick up, as they kept pace behind Andover/Whitesivlle with each sharing a four-run third inning.

The score would remain in Andover/Whitesville’s favor, but not without one last fight, as Fillmore (6-11) went on to score five of the last eight runs, including a four-run sixth inning that would allow them to cut their deficit down to five going into their last at-bats of the night. But the hosts were able to stand tall, as Brewster put together a brilliant day on the mound with one last 1-2-3 in the seventh to shut the door.

Andover/Whitesville accounted for 15 runs off 11 total hits at the plate, with Brewster, Aislinn Hamilton and Ava Grice all leading the bats with two. On the mound, Brewster would come away victorious as the winning pitcher, fanning eight and walking one in her complete game.

On the mound for the Lady Eagles, Mylee Miller went the distance with three strikeouts and five walks. At the plate, Mattie McCumiskey provided a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate, including a first inning triple. Skylar Gaddy recorded three hits, all of which were singles.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, as Andover/Whitesville pays a visit to Bolivar-Richburg, while Fillmore heads back home to close out their regular season slate with Friendship/Scio in town.

BASEBALL

Wellsville 14, Cuba-Rushford 6

CUBA — Behind a dynamic display of relief pitching from Trenton Green, along with eight unanswered runs down the stretch, the Lions of Wellsville would not be denied to start the final week of the regular season on Monday, as they went past host Cuba-Rushford with a 14-6 victory.

“It’s promising. Getting back on track, and we’ve been talking about bouncing back after a couple of these losses this week. We’re trying to go into Sectionals as positively and as strong as we can,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “The last two wins we’ve had are the first of hopefully a few more coming up. The effort Trenton (Green) gave us tonight, he shut the door after a sloppy first inning. We haven’t used him much as a pitcher, but we needed his strong performance tonight. Alex (Green) came back in the lineup, and he hit his first five hits of the season. Logan (Dunbar) went 4-for-5. He’s also started to find his rhythm, and he’s getting hot before Sectionals. Hopefully everything keeps going.”

Both the Lions (8-10) and Rebels traded barbs in the first two innings of play, each scoring a four-run and two-run frame in alternating fashion to come together towards a 6-6 tie through the first two innings of play. For Cuba-Rushford, that would be all for the scoring. But for the Lions, it was just the beginning.

In the top of the third, a strand of eight consecutive runs would begin from that point forward, allowing them to maintain control of the lead over the Rebels (11-7) while Trenton Green executed his plan in relief on the mound to full capacity until the end, as he tossed five straight shutout innings while the offense went straight to work on an 18-hit bonanza.

“Wellsville came out swinging and we matched them early. Defensively, they made some nice plays and we struggled to do the same. They took advantage of our mistakes and made us pay. Trenton Green threw a lot of strikes and let his defense work in his relief effort.” Rebels coach Pat Wight said.

Green would tally five strikeouts and three walks in his relief appearance that began in the second and went until his last pitch was thrown.

As for the offense, Alex Green was a big reason behind a big majority of Wellsville’s effort, recording his first five-hit game of the season in his return to the lineup, going a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored. Logan Dunbar provided a 3-for-5 outing with a double and three RBI, while Cody Costello was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored to continue adding on more runs down the home stretch, scoring seven in the top of the fifth to help put the game away.

For Cuba-Rushford, Jacob Smith and Braeden Wight each recorded a double, with Wight driving in a pair along the way. Eli Sleggs recorded a two-out double, while Sam Grover had two hits.

The two foes will meet one more time in Wellsville on Thursday to wrap up the regular season. As for the Lions, they will host the Hornell Red Raiders first at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for Senior Night.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 5, Friendship/Scio 2

BELMONT — Baserunning was ultimately the name of the game for both Friendship/Scio and Genesee Valley/Belfast on Monday, with a vast majority of the game’s seven combined runs working their way across. But in the end, the majority of which would belong to host Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they took the 5-2 win.

“We ran the bases, we were aggressive and they had a few errors,” GV/Belfast coach Kevin Scott said. “We were able to do what we needed to do, and with Ethan on the mound. He pitched one hell of a game for them, and Carter came in for us and pitched just as well. He went down the stretch and walked away with the win for us to carry the momentum into Senior night on Wednesday. We put the ball in play, and we made the plays behind them.”

After both squads exchanged an early pair of frames from the beginning, the runs would begin to crack through in the bottom of the third, which allowed Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-8) to get on the board first with three big runs. The advantage would remain intact, as both teams exchanged matching frames down the stretch, which would allow the hosts to take care of business with the victory in hand.

Matt Cater and Carter Stout both had two outstanding days of service, combining to record 15 strikeouts against Friendship/Scio (4-12), with Cater recording the win on the hill with seven strikeouts and four walks. Stout added in eight more to go with a walk.

On the other side, Ethan Davenport went the distance for the visitors, handing out 10 chairs and walking two. At the plate for Friendship/Scio, Cooper Greenman and Nick Sortore both posted a hit, with Sortore recording a triple.

Bolivar-Richburg 15, Hinsdale 1

HINSDALE — Out of the gate hot were the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg on Monday, using a four-run opening at-bat session to put the hammer down on the host Bobcats of Hinsdale, using it to roll away and towards what ultimately became a 15-1 win on the road.

Three different hitters for the Wolverines (14-4) all recorded a pair of hits, with Aydin Sisson recording a 3-for-5 outing at the plate, scoring a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Caden Allen chipped in with his triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Trey Buchholz two RBI on two hits, scoring three more times for Bolivar-Richburg.

The action picked up later on in the bottom of the fourth, when the Bobcats (7-8) were able to hop aboard the train themselves with an RBI from Robert Childs. The 4-1 lead for Bolivar-Richburg would be as close as the Bobcats would get, as the Wolverines went on to overtake their lead by seven after five innings, and by 14 later on with a seven-run frame.

On the mound for the hosts, James Margeson was credited the victory with three strikeouts and two walks. For Hinsdale, Henry Schwartz struck out four and walked three in his start across five innings.

Fillmore 19, Andover/Whitesville 1 (F-5)

ANDOVER — The Eagles of Fillmore and their hot streak going into Sectionals continued to burn on the road Monday night, as they used a first inning filled with fireworks to set off a massive tone against host Andover/Whitesville, scoring 11 of their 19 runs during their opening at-bats and never looked back at what was a 19-1 win after five complete innings of action.

The Eagles (13-1) blasted three different home runs from Mitch Ward, Brent Zubikowski and Brayden Hennard to power up an offense that lowered the boom on an 11-run top of the first off seven hits including Ward’s two-run blast to help keep breaking the action open. Andover/Whitesville responded with their long run of the game, scoring it off special teams around the bases to help trim the deficit.

But the runs continued to work their way on once more for Fillmore, as they scored a two-run frame in the third before another monster frame to close out the night — a six -run frame that helped them put a ribbon on the victory.

Luke Colombo recorded the win off two innings of work, fanning five and walking two. At the plate, Nolan Krzeminski and Brent Zubikowski each posted a trio of hits. Zach Sisson had two hits to add, while Luke Colombo added in a double.
