Monday Roundup: Lady JagDogs use 2nd quarter scamper to break away from J-T in 50-35 home win to move back above .500; Houghton, B-R ladies fall
BELMONT — With a trip to Avoca/Prattsburgh’s Christmas Tournament coming upon the horizon, the Lady JagDogs of Genesee Valley/Belfast were determined to prepare themselves for the opportunity.
That chance came one week before the festivities get set to begin, back on their home floor.
In a tune-up game of sorts, the hope was to march forward toward any momentum that their contest inside the Jungle against Jasper-Troupsburg would offer. For much of the opening quarter, it was a slow, but back-and-forth exchanging of pleasantries that saw the Lady JagDogs hop out front with the slight edge.
In the second quarter, much more.
Right from the start, Genesee Valley/Belfast would hit every stride and record all the notes with a perfect rhythm to formulate a first half-ending run that ultimately allowed them to draw their line in the sand in front of the Lady Wildcats, as they rolled their way toward a lead by as much as 15, and held it for the remainder of the game in what was a 50-35 home victory to climb their way back above .500.
The first quarter was a slow start for both Jasper-Troupsburg and Genesee Valley/Belfast, with the first basket not being put away until almost half of the quarter was erased. Then, a back-and-forth exchange ensued which saw the Lady JagDogs (3-2) grab the narrow one-point lead heading into the second quarter.
Then, the breakout.
The Lady JagDogs began to hit all strides, hitting seven of the first nine points to start the new frame, beginning with a fantastic pass from Adison Grusendorf to Mary Hamer down low for the basket, and a three-pointer from the hand of Grusendorf falling along the way to set up what came to be an 18-4 run of Jasper-Troupsburg, taking a 15-point lead that they never lost, into the break.
Alicia Borden led all scorers for Genesee Valley/Belfast with a game-high 16 points. Hamer would finish with 10 points down low, while Grusendorf concluded with nine.
The Lady JagDogs will now get set for Christmas Tournament action in Prattsburgh, as they take on host Avoca/Prattsburgh in the opening round beginning next Monday in a 7 p.m. tip-off.

ROCHESTER — The Lady Panthers of Houghton Academy, through the opening eight minutes, were in control of their own destiny. With a lead in their hands going into the second quarter, it now gave them a chance to build more onto it.
But for host Northstar, they played spoiler in a big way, as they provided their largest of showings all game on both ends of the floor, holding the Lady Panthers on defense to just three points while flying away on a 15-3 run to take the lead, essentially for good to secure a 38-28 home win on Monday.
The second quarter run, after Houghton Academy (5-2) started the night on the right foot with a three-point lead, was headlined by Northstar’s Alayna Garwood and Cristina Aparicio Garcia, who combined to record 30 of the team’s 38 points in the game, as they used their efforts to power up a big 15-3 run of the Lady Panthers to put an early 10-7 deficit in the rearview mirror for good.

BOLIVAR — After a historic moment unfolded at Alfred-Almond this past weekend, Canisteo-Greenwood’s newest member into their 1,000-point club followed up with perhaps her biggest game of the season on Monday.
Lady Redskins sophomore Lillian Mullen helped fuel a spectacular outing of offense during their road trip to Bolivar-Richburg, assisting in a rapid start in the first eight minutes that the team never looked back from in her season-high 27-point performance to lead Canisteo-Greenwood toward a 59-32 rolling of the host Lady Wolverines.
The first eight minutes by Canisteo-Greenwood (6-2) were spent by providing stand-up defense to pair with their fast-paced offense against the Lady Wolverines, as they held their opposition to just three points, two from the field while both Mullen and Bailey Mullen accounted for 15 of the team’s 17 points in the quarter to set the bar right away.
The Lady Redskins would go on to score one more first half run of Bolivar-Richburg (1-5) to extend their double digit lead even further, ending the half with a 30-9 lead that they never lost to secure their sixth win in their first eight games.
Finishing behind Mullen, who also had 10 rebounds to complete her double-double, was Bailey Mullen and Brooke Byrd who had 12 points each. Peyton Peters had six points.
The Lady Wolverines were paced from a sharpshooting night from Kayli Giardini, who launched five of the team’s six triples to put toward a season-high 21 point evening. Jessica Majot added in five more points of her own.
Bolivar-Richburg will return to action one last time before the holiday recess, as they host their seventh straight contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Archbishop Walsh.
