Tuesday Roundup: Avoca/Prattsburgh scores 112 points, 41 inside electric 2nd quarter to race toward massive 112-74 win over Fillmore; Cole captures rare triple-double in Lady Eagles win at Ark/Can

FILLMORE — When you think of perennial powerhouses amongst the Section V ranks, you think of teams like Wellsville in Class B, Caledonia-Mumford in Class C, and in Class D more recently, Avoca/Prattsburgh — the back-to-back Sectional champions in Class D2 themselves.

This season, the combined group made the move up to Class D1 to join fellow teams like Wheatland-Chili, and their opponent to the West of them Tuesday night — Fillmore, in the battle towards glory when the second season arrives in February.

For now, undefeated Avoca/Prattsburgh and Fillmore, winners of four of their first five games, did battle in a fight between two fast-paced clubs that left all the footprints and scuff marks from their shoes possible on The Rock’s storied hardwood.

To open the game, the balance of power shifted each and every way with the visitors in green scoring a narrow two-point lead to carry over. But then, a massive eruption soon came after.

It was one you can similarly equate to a form of volcanic essence, Avoca/Prattsburgh took advantage of almost everything they would see. Cashing in on turnovers from their full-court press, foul shots, or just your ordinary looks from down low and downtown.

The visiting opposition simply could not miss against the Eagles, as they scored a season-high 112 points off 47 total field goals, led by a massive 2nd quarter inferno that saw their single digit lead erratically grow until it was out of reach, as they laid the foundation down for what was a 112-74 road win over Fillmore in their Class D1 mid-season clash.

“Avoca/Prattsburgh has won the last two Sectional championships for a reason,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “We did a good job fighting through the initial wave in the first quarter, but we did a horrible job of defending in transition, and made way too many casual passes. Their pace really got to us, and we just panicked during the second quarter. We put them on our schedule for a reason, and now it is up to us to learn and get better from it.”

It was a start that Fillmore (4-2) had to fight through in the opening quarter to grab the position they wanted to have over Avoca/Prattsburgh moving forward. After the visitors scored seven of the first nine points of the game, the Eagles managed to cut away at the deficit each time, led by Mitch Ward and Will Roeske, who combined for 51 of the team’s 74 points, to remain side-by-side through the thick and thin of it.

It would lead to a 21-19 lead for Avoca/Prattsburgh to control heading into the second quarter, where the balance of the game changed astonishingly.

The three-point game would come to life all throughout, as Avoca/Prattsburgh sank seven of them altogether, with Hayden Abbott catching fire with five of his own while the inside game was powered with multiple turnovers plaguing the Eagles offense on the other end, the majority of which coming during transition down the court.

As a result, Avoca/Prattsburgh would go on to score an unequivocal 41-11 run of the hosts in white and green to extend their once two-point lead after the opening eight, to 32 when the first half came to a close, essentially giving them all the room they would need to pull their way towards a 7-0 start heading into the holiday break.

Despite the deficit, Fillmore continued to see the efforts of Roeske and Ward shine through it all, with both Eagles forcing their way down low against the defense to net the bulk of the team’s points to keep themselves in a dead heat on offense alongside Avoca/Prattsburgh in the second half.

For Roeske, he would bucket 17 of his game-high 29 points in the last 16 minutes alone, while Ward finished with 22 points of his own, a season-best to help the offensive cause. Adding to it for the hosts was Carter Sisson, who had 10 points to chip in.

Avoca/Prattsburgh’s season-best performance saw them land nearly 50 field goals inside and out, including 13 3-pointers from downtown, and individually, six different players recording at least 10 points on offense, two of them netting at least 20 including Sawyer DeVoe, who had 25 to lead the way.

Fillmore will now look to rebound when the calendar flips to 2022, kicking off the second half of their schedule with a 7:30 p.m. home contest slated against Genesee Valley.

Friendship/Scio 46, Hinsdale 13

FRIENDSHIP — Heading into the holiday break, as well as their own Christmas Tournament on a bright note was one thing that Friendship/Scio wanted to do.

When Tuesday night’s return home became imminent, they would make sure they did just that, as they scored an early lead and held onto it the rest of the way, holding visiting Hinsdale scoreless through the next two quarters of play while scoring a big 33-0 run along the way to pull themselves toward a 46-13 win in Friendship.

With some strong notes being hit during the first eight minute period, it allowed Friendship/Scio (5-2) to build up an 11-4 lead of the Bobcats to carry onwards to the end of the first half, where they used the momentum to hold the visitors off the scoreboard for the next eight minutes with a 19-0 half-ending run to pull away insurmountably.

Further damage was done after the break with 14 more unanswered points being recorded, as three of Friendship/Scio’s four scorers recorded at least 10 points. Lazar Bulajic led the way with a game-high 15 points to pair with nine rebounds and seven steals. Ethan Davenport had 13 points to add, while Jacob Golden chipped in with 10. Brenden Loucks rounded off with the team’s last eight points.

For Hinsdale (0-6), Cody Barton led all scorers with six team-high points. The Bobcats will now head back home and host Andover/Whitesville after the holiday break, in a 6 p.m. tip-off on January 7.

Friendship/Scio will now prepare to hold their annual Christmas Tournament in Scio, garnering a first round matchup against Belfast that will begin next Tuesday night in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Cuba-Rushford and Houghton Academy will open the tournament up with their first round battle at 6 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fillmore 54, Arkport/Canaseraga 32

CANASERAGA — It was an absolutely remarkable performance. One in Canaseraga that you had to see to believe on Tuesday.

Double-doubles are a common occurrence, but not very often in Allegany County do you have a player, whether it be from either the boys or girls basketball divisions, achieve the ultra-rare triple-double.

This past Fall, she led the volleyball team toward the program’s first Sectional title in 25 years as their powerhouse on offense. Now on the first calendar day of Winter, she went on to add even more to her growing list of accolades in her final season representing the black and green.

That was achieved by Lady Eagles Senior superstar Emma Cole.

No. 11 down low took charge for the Lady Eagles and came away with the biggest reward yet — a season-high 27-point, 18-rebound, 10-block triple-double to help Fillmore score their seventh straight win after a strong ending to their first half performance on both ends of the floor resulted in a 54-32 road triumph at Arkport/Canaseraga.

“It was one of the most special performances I’ve had the chance to be a part of since I’ve been here,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “On offense and defense, Emma was at the top of her game. The girls just do a tremendous job putting that ball in the right place at the right time. Arkport/Canaseraga is no slouch either, they had a decent game plan. But the girls were able to find Emma down low, and she knows what to do when she got it. They are great about getting her the ball without forcing it, and they’re also playing off of her too.”

Behind Cole’s career-defining game, multiple Lady Eagles combined to deliver 12 assists, four of them also finding the scorebook themselves along the way to help further the team’s cause on offense.

The Lady Eagles (7-0) would go on and battle right alongside Arkport/Canaseraga for much of the opening quarter, dealing back-and-forth baskets until a three-point edge was garnered going into the second. From there, it was on the defense to fuel their best offense one more time to end the first half strong.

Did they ever respond.

Fillmore held the Lady Wolves in check to just four points in the second quarter while the offense, led by Cole, set the bar for the second half, as they soared forward with a 13-4 run that saw them extend their lead to double digits, never losing it along the way to take their seventh straight win back home to The Rock.

Jadyn Mucher was just a few rebounds shy of a double-double herself, as she finished as Fillmore’s next leading scorer with 12 points on the attack, including a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe, to go with eight boards off the glass. Hope Russell added in seven points of her own, while Grace Russell had five. On special teams, Rachel Hatch handed out four assists.

The Lady Eagles will now sit back and relax over the Christmas break, as they will now take time to prepare for the second half of the season, which will take effect on January 7 when they host their crosstown foe Houghton Academy in a 6 p.m. battle back home.

Andover/Whitesville 45, Addison 32

WHITESVILLE — Using offense and defense to the fullest of advantages can pay off in several ways. For Andover/Whitesville, they are traits that have provided them with a strong start to their season — their first as a combined unit during the Winter season on the hardwood.

It has given them four wins in their first five games, and perhaps more Tuesday evening to head into the Christmas break red hot. All that was needed, is one half of solid basketball.

They would go on to battle step-by-step with visiting Addison for much of the opening quarter in Whitesville, one that would see them come out on top with a one-point lead. Then, it was the defense’s turn, and that effort would pay off incredibly, as they held the Lady Knights to their lowest spurt of offense all game to pull away toward a big half-time lead they would not lose to record their fifth win in their first six in a 45-32 home win.

“The girls really got after it on the defensive end tonight against a good Addison team that posed a lot of matchup problems for us,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Aaron Rawady. “It was one of our better defensive performances so far this year. We have to be more efficient on offense though, and cut down on the turnovers. The effort tonight was really good on our ends, and we are more than happy with the outcome.”

Vanessa Hall, along with a slew of Andover/Whitesville (5-1) scorers, came up with a solid 25-16 first half to control moving into the next half, as Hall went on to score 15 of her game-high 32 points in the first 16 minutes, eight of them coming in the midst of their 12-4 run of Addison in the second quarter to end the opening half.

In the second half, the hosts would use their defensive efforts to power the way toward victory, remaining out front with two narrow, but crucial out-scorings of the Lady Knights to keep themselves one step ahead.

Finishing behind Hall and her 32 points, was Rachel Jackson who had six points to add in. Maria Riloba recorded three points.

Andover/Whitesville is now off until the new year, as they prepare to return to action on January 4 with a visit from the Hinsdale Lady Bobcats back in Whitesville, beginning at 6 p.m.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Cuba-Rushford 3, Fillmore 0

CUBA — All that was needed for the Cuba-Rushford Rebels was one more win. One more would send them into the Christmas Break with a perfect seat upon the highest pedestal in the County.

Thus far, they have shelled out defeat to five of the six teams to start their campaign. The only team they haven’t encountered — the Fillmore Eagles. Those two teams came together for the first time on Tuesday inside the Wighthouse.

After a back-and-forth battle between both squads in the early-going, the jets were turned on soon after.

Exchanging a pair of runs through the first few sets, it was the Rebels that managed to find some openings upon the floor on a consecutive basis. After multiple ties, they would score a big 11-1 run through the opening set that ultimately opened the door towards a straight-set win over the Eagles, taking the 3-0 decision by a 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 count.

“We played well tonight, and we were able to limit our mistakes throughout all three sets,” Rebels coach Nick Perillo said. “Fillmore has a lot of talent, and they showed that in the last set by making a comeback, and putting in a lot of blocks against our shots. Overall, I’m proud of our boys for powering through and getting this win.”

Three straight points between both Fillmore and Cuba-Rushford (6-0) began the night, and saw multiple ties come thereafter through the early stages. After scoring nine points on each side, the Rebels then marched out on a run by scoring 11 of the next 12 points going their way to put toward what was a decisive first set victory.

More of the same occurred in the second set, when back-and-forth spurts set up shop to begin. From that point, after garnering a two-point, 7-5 lead on the Eagles (1-5), the hosts in blue ran off with 11 of the next 14 in their back pocket to branch their lead to double digits for the rest of the set to push their opposition to the brink.

Fillmore would show signs of life by taking Cuba-Rushford all the way down to the end with a massive rally in the third set, but the Rebels were able to find their way through and put a halt on the Eagles for good to secure the straight-set win, their sixth overall victory in a row to head into the holiday break remaining undefeated.

Leading Cuba-Rushford on the offensive front was Max Hinckley, who recorded seven aces from the service line to pair with six kills. Setter Allen Fuller dished out 11 helpers to his teammates while collecting two more aces and two kills of his own to add in.

On the other side, Fillmore saw Kaleb Tinch (two aces) and Aiden Wagner (one ace) lead the way, each recording four service points. Matt Majoros came away with a pair of blocks at the net to help the defense.

Both teams are now off until the new year, with Fillmore returning to action first on January 3 with a 6 p.m. road trip to Bolivar-Richburg. A few days later, Cuba-Rushford will look to pick up where they will leave off, going for seven straight wins with Wellsville — winners of four in a row themselves, in town for a 6 p.m. first serve.

WRESTLING

Wellsville 60, Arkport/Canaseraga 12

WELLSVILLE — There was no better start to their regular season on their home mat on Tuesday. For the Wellsville grapplers, the wait was over. And it was well worth it.

The Lions would capitalize while the iron was hot with multiple forfeit victories, the majority of them coming in the middle to heavyweight matches. Out of just five matches to take the mat, they would pick up a pair from Cole Hadfield and Xander Outman to help set up shop for a big win over visiting Arkport/Canaseraga, taking the 60-12 rout in their favor on Tuesday.

The Lions totaled 10 victories out of the 13 matches that were slated to take place. Of them, Hadfield and Outman delivered back-to-back victories in the middleweight division, with Hadfield starting it off with the night’s quickest pin of 29 seconds over Arkport/Canaseraga’s Sage Butcher at 145 pounds. Following was Outman, who had a 1:59 pin-fall victory of his own at 152 pounds to help the cause.

Wellsville would go on to score seven straight forfeit wins to add to their lead before the Wolves scored three straight on the mat themselves in competition, gathering points in the 118, 126, and 132 pounds matches before Noah Joslyn ended the night with one final forfeit win at 138 pounds for the hosts.
