Friday Roundup: Lions overcome halftime deficit, provide 3rd quarter engulfment to sweep season series with Wolverines; Fillmore girls knock off And/Whi in fierce battle of State ranks

BOLIVAR — Friday night was a chance for redemption. After falling to Wellsville by nearly 30 points in their previous matchup a couple of weeks ago, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg wanted to take the opportunity to correct a few wrongs in time for Wellsville’s visit to wrap up their season series.

One thing that has been proven time and time again throughout the game of basketball — it can become a game of runs.

That particular theory was proven true in Wellsville/Bolivar-Richburg: Part Two, as both the Lions and Wolverines just kept delivering one punch after another throughout the entire game, especially in the first half where the hosts in white and red bounced back after an early deficit to their visiting opposition to take a six-point lead at the half.

But then, lightning stuck in the second half. And that was provided by the Lions.

Wellsville was on it the entire eight minute period in their return to the floor after the first half break, as they provided a second half engulfment of Bolivar-Richburg that erased everything, holding the Wolverines down to just a single basket in the midst of their tide-turning run to jump ahead permanently to secure what became a big 45-39 victory over the road to sweep the season series.

“We talked at the beginning of the game that this was going to be a game of runs,” Wolverines coach Jeff Margeson said. “I told them not to get down on themselves. We were going to score multiple buckets in a row, and so were they. When they came out off the bat the way they did, we called for a timeout and talked about it. It was old-time basketball, and the atmosphere gave us a little spark to come back after the slow start. They worked so hard tonight, the defense has been playing so much better after games against Canisteo, and now this one. As a coach, all you can do is just keep them positive.”

Right from the word go, Wellsville (7-7) started off swinging with the first of two runs that the opening quarter would witness, as they went straight to work on seven straight points through the first two minutes and change against Bolivar-Richburg. The run would stand up until around three minutes left in the session, when the Wolverines took it upon themselves to build a run of their own.

That run was powered by their leading scorer, Landon Danaher, who scored the first seven points out of the next eight between both teams after Wellsville’s scoreless run. After a shot at the line put the Lions back ahead, the Wolverines (9-4) then looked to their three-point game to deliver, coming from Danaher and Aydin Sisson, who sank a pair of three-pointers, the latter of which giving the hosts the 13-11 lead to finish up a 13-4 quarter-ending jaunt.

In the second quarter, the game worked its way toward a 15-15 tie before the three-point game kicked back into gear for both sides with Evan Pinney and Cody Costello exchanging long-range baskets off back-to-back possessions on the hardwood. The scores coming before the Wolverines jumped ahead with the last six points of the first half, with Danaher landing another three-pointer along the way to help the cause.

The momentum was in the favor of the Wolverines for their return to the court. But the Lions found a way to get overwhelmingly hot to start the second half, using some balanced offense to regain the upper hand on Bolivar-Richburg off a 9-0 run that would end near the midway mark by another Danaher runner.

But the basket was the only one scored by the hosts in the entire third quarter, as the Lions accounted for a massive shape-shifting 18-2 run of the Wolverines, building as large of a lead as 10 with three-pointers from Costello and Asher Billings extending the advantage to end the frame.

“We had great defense and great intensity in the first half,” Margeson said. “We boxed them out and everything. We always preach that first four minutes, and I told them it was going to happen again in the second half. We were up six at the half, and we were in a great position. But Wellsville got hot, and they stayed hot. It’s a testament to the defense that Wellsville plays as a response in the third quarter. It’s stifling, and you have to find a way to knock down those outside shots to relieve some of that pressure, but we couldn’t.”

The fourth quarter was all about maintaining that one footstep ahead of their opposition for the Lions, building the night’s largest lead of 12 points — an advantage that was quickly evaporated by the Wolverines, who provided one last attempt to cut away at their deficit with an 8-0 run with 3:23 left in regulation, trailing by four.

After Wellsville went forth to stretch their lead back out one more time, Danaher launched his third and final trey to trim the deficit back down to four with under two minutes left. In the final 60 seconds of the game, the Wolverines were looking to get back to within a stones throw of the team in black and orange, but a crucial turnover just past midcourt allowed them on the next break to secure the win for good, as Costello cashed in on the steal to branch the Lions lead to six to end the game.

Eli Schmidt led all Wellsville scorers with a team-high 12 points, including eight of the team’s nine total points in the fourth quarter. Costello would finish with 11 points to help the cause, while Logan Dunbar finished with eight points.

The Wolverines saw Danaher led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 21 points to pair with his nine rebounds, nearly capping off an impressive double-double. Aydin Sisson sank a pair of three-pointers, for six points, while Reiss Gaines had five.

Margeson says despite the season-sweeping defeat to the Lions, it’s one that he hopes his squad will not continue to hold their heads down over, with four contests in five days looming on the horizon next week.

“I told them at the end of the game that we cannot hang out heads from this,” he said. “We’ve put ourselves in a position to win the game. We were up nine against Canisteo with three minutes to go, and we were up eight at the half tonight in this one. The final rung on the ladder, is finishing. We’re knocking on the door, and we just have to find a way to finish. Credit Raymie (Auman), they’re a feisty group and they made all the right adjustments against our 2-3 zone in the second half. When they stretched it out even more, that really opened the floor for them.”

Wellsville will look to spring back over .500 when they hit the road once more Monday night, taking on Cuba-Rushford in a 7:30 p.m. battle. As for the Wolverines, they will look to rebound over the road themselves on Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Belfast.

Cuba-Rushford 53, Genesee Valley 37

BELMONT — The physical play entered the fray in the beginning stages of the evening inside the Jungle, Friday night. Both Cuba-Rushford and Genesee Valley went toe-to-toe with one another, battling their way through an opening quarter that saw the Rebels jump out to the early lead.

In the next eight minute session, that advantage grew much larger, as the offense began to hit all stride against the Jaguars, holding them on both ends of the floor in a second quarter run that saw them remain in the driver’s seat until the end, racing away toward a 53-37 road win.

“GV came out and played more physical than us to start the game,” said Rebels coach Bryce Ryan. “I challenged the boys and they responded late in the first quarter. Our pressure generated some easy looks, but we still have to finish some easy transition stuff better. I’m pleased that we battled and picked up our intensity to win the game, but we have plenty to improve on.”

The Rebels (7-5) started their night off with a hot stand from three-point range, powering up a 14-8 lead over the Jaguars with three of their seven total triples, including a pair from the hand of Will Sharp, to help counter the fight against the physical play presented by the hosts in white and green.

That edge from outside would help energize the night’s biggest run, and ultimately the difference maker — a 17-5 second quarter run from Cuba-Rushford led by an all balanced attack from all facets, from inside and out of the arc, to the free throw line, where Brayden Lavery went a perfect 4-for-4 to help the cause on special teams. The elements would give the visitors in blue and maroon a 31-13 lead at the break to control.

In the midst of the team’s all-balanced offensive outing, the Rebels were led by a game-high 10 point effort from Jack Frank. Lavery would added in nine points, while Braeden Wight and Luke Brooks each had eight, with Wight scoring all eight of his points in the last eight minutes of play.

Leading the Jaguars (3-10) was Morgan Torrey, who had a team-high nine points. Elden Aquila and Max Wedge each had eight points to contribute, while Fisher Herdman had five.

Both teams are back on their home floors after the weekend with a pair of 7:30 p.m. contests on Monday, as Cuba-Rushford re-enters the Wighthouse to take on the Wellsville Lions, while Genesee Valley looks to rebound with Jasper-Troupsburg in town for a visit to the Jungle.

Friendship/Scio 57, Houghton Academy 43

FRIENDSHIP — Friendship/Scio put together a first half of basketball they used to their fullest of advantages, garnering a double-digit lead to hold over Houghton Academy going into the break on Friday.

After recording their biggest offensive stand of the night came before the half’s conclusion, the hosts would go on to use that as fuel upon their return to the court for the second half, as they held the visiting Panthers in check across eight crucial minutes while capitalizing on a lead that grew insurmountably, as they were able to snap their six-game slide with a return to the win column by a 57-43 count.

Friendship/Scio (7-8) was able to establish their presence through the first three quarters of play, including garnering a quick five-point lead after the opening quarter. The lead would eclipse the double-digit mark after the hosts came together for a strong 18-point finish to the first half, despite Houghton Academy hanging right alongside with a strong counter on the opposite end of the floor.

With a 31-21 lead in hand going into the second half, Friendship/Scio used the fuel to rekindle their offensive fire upon their return to the hardwood, as they provided a game-changing 14-4 run of the Panthers (3-9) to pull themselves out of their reach permanently.

Three different scorers tallied at least 10 points to ignite the offense for Friendship/Scio, with Lazar Bulajic charging the front with a game-high 18 points to pair with 12 rebounds, completing a double-double. Ethan Davenport sank three of the team’s seven three-pointers on his way toward a 14-point effort, while Jacob Golden had 11 points. Off the boards, Brenden Loucks grabbed 12 additional rebounds.

Houghton Academy saw 27 of their 43 points come from downtown, courtesy of nine total three-pointers, with Hugo Huang and James Adenuga each sinking three to power up 17 team-high points each. Malachi DeGolyer added in two more treys, for six points, while Jack Prentice had the team’s last to round off the scoring.

Both teams are back in action Monday evening, as Friendship/Scio prepares for a 7 p.m. visit to Mount Morris, while Houghton Academy heads back home to host the Hammondsport Lakers in a 6:45 p.m. tip-off.

Fillmore 77, Hinsdale 36

HINSDALE — The Eagles of Fillmore were relentless on the offensive attack right from the start, as they saw four different scorers crack the 10-point plateau in an effort that saw them score at least 20 points in the first three quarters to catch a fire that never burnt out in their Friday road trip to Hinsdale, returning home victorious behind a 77-36 victory.

Almost every Eagle managed to have a hand in the team’s successful road trip, in a game that saw them attack from all fronts on offense, garnering 30 total buckets, nine of them from downtown and four from the hand of Zach Sisson who was the team’s leading scorer with a game-high 16 points.

After a 22-17 lead over the Bobcats in what was a highly active opening quarter, Fillmore (10-3) managed to sway the action in their favor for the rest of the evening, as they held Hinsdale to just three more points to close out the opening half with an extended lead they would never look back from to ultimately exit town victorious.

Finishing behind Sisson were Carter Sisson and Brent Zubikowski, who each tallied 12 more points to further the team’s cause, while Mitch Ward had 11 to dish in. For Hinsdale (0-10), Cody Barton led the way with a team-high 10 points.

Both teams will return to their home floors Monday evening in a pair of 7:30 p.m. contests, as the Eagles head back into The Rock to host Andover/Whitesville, while the Bobcats welcome in Friendship/Scio for a visit.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fillmore 38, Andover/Whitesville 30

FILLMORE — Usually when you have two State-ranked teams battling it out on the center stage at any given time, you automatically know that it winds up becoming one of the more grueling battles to the finish line.

When the top-ranked Class D team, as well as one of its disciples met for the second and final time this season, the expectation was no different — two of Allegany County’s toughest teams giving it everything they have, Friday night inside The Rock.

Throughout the entire night, both Andover/Whitesville and undefeated Fillmore aimed to match intensity levels on defense. The only question left to answer was: Who was going to cash in on the bulk of the opportunities to complete the cycle?

Luckily for the Lady Eagles, they gave that answer in the form of a fast start by an offense that recorded a balanced effort across the board, with the rise of Jadyn Mucher soon following in the second half, as the hosts in white and green strung together all of the crucial elements to come away victorious with the season-sweep of Andover/Whitesville by a 38-30 count.

“Andover/Whitesville is just a really good, well-coached team,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “They are a nightmare to prepare for, and obviously they have one of the best players in all of Section V with Vanessa (Hall), and some nice components to go with that. They are just a tough team to play, and when you play a team like them, defense has to be a priority. You know that points are going to be hard to come by on the offensive mend, and trying to limit what they do offensively is a tough task. It was a great battle between two tough teams, and I expect Andover/Whitesville to be playing for a Sectional title in a month or so.”

The Lady Eagles (15-0) jumped right out to a five-point lead through the opening eight minute period after Andover/Whitesville’s defense maintained their discipline against Fillmore’s leading scorer in Emma Cole, who was held to just five points in the contest. It would allow the floor to open up for the scorers around the Lady Eagles Senior, as they cashed in on a 16-11 advantage to carry into the second.

The well-balanced scoring effort carried into the locker room, where Fillmore built a big 10-4 run of Andover/Whitesville (10-3) to end the opening half. The 26-15 lead would continue to hold, as Mucher led all Lady Eagles scorers with a team-high 15 points, seven of those points coming from within the team’s 9-4 run that essentially kept them in the lead for good.

While the offense foresaw multiple opportunities to cash in, the defense held up their end of the bargain by holding Andover/Whitesville’s leading scorer, Vanessa Hall to just 17 points, a game-high all from the field, keeping the Junior sharpshooter off the charity stripe — an asset that Parks says is her most lethal out of her arsenal.

“Jadyn has really risen as a leader on and off the court for us. She stepped up in a big way tonight and really carried us in the third quarter. She can get to the basket, and provide some nice range from outside,” said Parks. “I thought that we did all we could on Vanessa. Preslee (Miller), Rachel (Hatch) and Madi (Geertman) all took turns with her, but really it makes a whole team. She still walked away with 17, and a point of emphasis was to keep her off the line, where she’s deadly. We certainly had to help very early and be in a good position, and I thought the girls did well in that regard.”

Andover/Whitesville would provide some late pressure in the last eight minutes, holding Fillmore to just three more points in their 9-3 fourth quarter run, but the late rally from behind would fall just short, as the Lady Eagles managed to hang on to remain unbeaten.

To go with her team-high points, Mucher would also grab seven rebounds and provide four steals to further her cause for Fillmore. Finishing behind her in the scorebook was Hope and Grace Russell, as they each tallied seven points, with Hope adding six steals while Grace handed out four assists. Emma Cole grabbed 13 rebounds to pair with six steals and five blocks to power her inside presence.

Helping Hall’s cause for Andover/Whitesville were Addison Morgan and Graci Lewis-Ellison, as they each tallied four points.

Both teams will hit the road after the weekend in a pair of 7:15 p.m. tip-offs on Monday, as Fillmore will take aim at 16 straight wins with a visit to Jasper-Troupsburg, while Andover/Whitesville looks to rebound in a trip to Addison.

FRIENDSHIP — Through a defensive battle to open the night, the offense would soon come after. That being for the Lady Panthers, as they rode the coattails of Jessica Prentice straight toward victory, as the Houghton Academy junior collected a game-high 22-point performance to help power the team’s 38-23 road win at Friendship/Scio on Friday, in Friendship.

After a 6-2 lead was established through the opening quarter for Houghton Academy (8-5), the lead would grow exponentially when the first half reached its conclusion for the visitors, gaining ground on a 10-point lead that they never looked back from, as they went on to outscore Friendship/Scio in all four quarters to pick up the victory.

Three different scorers each had four points to follow up Prentice’s game-high effort, as Anna Huizenga, Maddy Paschalis and Emily Tankeh all had a pair of baskets from inside to pitch in for the Lady Panthers, who will play host to Hammondsport after the weekend on Monday, beginning at 5 p.m.

Port Allegany 59, Bolivar-Richburg 31

PORT ALLEGANY — All that was needed right from the opening tip-off was the entire first eight minutes to come out swinging. On Friday, that was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Port Allegany Lady Gators, as they used the first of two scoreless runs to set the tone almost immediately to kick the tires on an eventual 59-31 home win over visiting Bolivar-Richburg.

Right from the get-go, Port Allegany went straight to work on the attack against the Lady Wolverines (3-12), as they scored the first 11 points of the game to set the bar. After the Lady Wolverines finished the stanza with four of the last six points, Port Allegany extended their lead to 24-11 when the first half buzzer rang out.

To begin the second half, the Lady Gators would pull away with one last scoreless run in the cards — a 12-0 jaunt through the third quarter, a 20-8 run in all, that never saw their belt in the driver’s seat from being unbuckled.

The Lady Rebels (6-9) planted a start that blossomed into a lead that never wilted. After scoring six of the first eight points in the opening eight minute session, the visitors in gray and blue used both ends of the floor to their fullest advantage, scoring a first half-ending 10-4 run of the Lady Bobcats to ultimately keep them in control for the rest of the way.

Behind Searle in the Cuba-Rushford scoresheet, Brynn Lavery and Ella Jaffe had six and four points each to chip in respectively, while Cloey Larabee and Shae Maples rounded off with a two-point basket each.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

No. 3 Wellsville 3, No. 6 Scio 0

WELLSVILLE — The race toward Allegany County supremacy has officially begun with three opening around contests around the area, Friday evening. Among the teams in action, are crosstown rivals Wellsville and Scio, as the No. 3 and No. 6 seeds came together for one last clash in the Lion’s Den.

It was a contest that saw the host Lions take complete control from the start with a dominant opening set. Despite the Tigers providing some pressure in the next two sets, the hosts in black and orange were able to hang on and provide a straight-set victory in front of their home crowd to advance forward into the Semifinal round next week with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-20 win over Scio to end their season.

Leading the attack for the Lions (9-4) was Xavier Scott, who was relentless at the front of the net, garnering a game-high 11 kills to pair with seven service points, three aces and two blocks. Helping further the cause was Mason Parks, who had six kills of his own to add onto six digs on defense and four aces. Brody Heaney chipped in with seven service points, four aces from the service line, three additional kills and a block.

On the other side for the Tigers (3-9), Jude Marion led the attack with a team-high four kills to pair with four service points and one ace, while Max Morris denied five shots at the front of the net, compiling five additional service points along the way to go with two more kills.

Wellsville now moves into the County Semifinal round, which will begin Tuesday night at 6 p.m. with a road trip to visit No. 2 Arkport/Canaseraga, who defeated No. 7 Genesee Valley/Belfast to claim their spot in the Semifinal round.

Scio’s return to boys volleyball action has concluded, as they wrap up the 2021-22 campaign with a record of 3-9.

No. 4 Bolivar-Richburg 3, No. 5 Fillmore 1

RICHBURG — The Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg provided a strong start to their game on Friday to kick the tires on pushing No. 5 Fillmore to the brink in their opening round contest of the County Tournament.

But despite a rebound from the Eagles in the third set to cut their match deficit in half, the No. 4 seeds in black and red were able to put the finishing touches on a spot in next week’s Semifinal round themselves, as they wrapped the evening on a dominant note, tallying the 25-10, 25-8, 15-25, 25-13 victory on their home floor.

Powering the way towards victory for Bolivar-Richburg (5-8) was Rudy Polk, who collected five team-high kills to pair alongside with five aces from the service line, four digs and two assists up front. Hunter Stuck and Ryan Greeson each handed out seven assists, with Stuck adding in five digs on defense to couple with two aces, two kills and two blocks.

In addition, Greeson chipped in with four blocks and three kills of his own.

For Fillmore (4-9), Kyle Paulsen led the way with a team-high six service points along with one ace. Henry Decker and Haley Hall each garnered three service points to help the cause for the Eagles.

The Wolverines are now off to visit No. 1 Cuba-Rushford in the second Semifinal contest set to take the stage on Tuesday, beginning at 6 p.m.

As for the Eagles, their season is now in the books, as they conclude their return to the boys volleyball scene with an overall record of 4-9.

No. 2 Arkport/Canaseraga 3, No. 7 Genesee Valley/Belfast 0

ARKPORT — The second-seeded Arkport/Canaseraga Wolves made sure they claimed a spot in the County Tournament’s Semifinal round after the weekend, as they rolled their way towards the finish line with a straight-set victory over visiting seventh-seeded Genesee Valley/Belfast JagDogs, Friday evening.

Despite the loss, Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-13) saw Sean Mahon take charge of the offense with his team-high five kills, adding them alongside four aces and two blocks. Canaan Sullivan contributed four kills of his own to pair with three aces from the service line and one block at the net.

“We played pretty well, but we just don’t have the firepower like Arkport/Canaseraga has,” said GV/Belfast coach Darren Bradt. “I was really proud of our guys and how they played, and how much they have learned from their growth. The ability to take seven gentlemen I have never played organized volleyball before, to a team that has a greater understanding of the sport they learned how to play together. It was awesome to see.”

The JagDogs season now concludes, as they wrap the 2021-22 campaign with an overall record of 1-13.
