Thursday Roundup: Wolverines dominate with eight wins, keep momentum rolling toward Sectionals with 42-21 win over Portville; B-R volleyball sweeps Scio to end regular season

PORTVILLE — Just a few days removed from a dominant performance on the mat against Wellsville, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg looked to keep the ball rolling towards the Sectional tournament back over the road on Thursday with a visit to Portville.

With the match beginning in the middleweight classes, the Panthers jumped out to an early lead of the Wolverines by taking three of the first four matches. But in the heavyweights and going forward, Bolivar-Richburg took over, allowing just one more Portville victory while capitalizing on seven of their own to pull ahead and away from their reach to secure a 42-21 match win.

After the match saw Portville begin with a decision win at 152 pounds, Caden Allen gave the Wolverines their first win in the next match, garnering a pin-fall win over his opponent during the second period, getting them on the board at 3:26 in his bout at 160 pounds. The Panthers would go on to add two straight wins to extend their lead, but the Wolverines would soon take over shortly after.

In the heavyweight bouts, Trent Sibble and Lloyd Kinnicutt went back-to-back with victories at 215 and 285 pounds for the Wolverines that helped set up shop for a dominant finish down the homestretch, with Sibble recording a forfeit win and Kinnicutt tallying a massive 12-3 decision win.

The momentum shifted into the lightweight bouts and into the final half of the middleweights, as Gary McDowell (102 pounds) tallied a pin-fall win of his own with just 16 seconds left in the opening period. After a pair of forfeits, including one by Teegan Sibble at 110 pounds, the Wolverines finished the night with three victories in the last four matches including Kadin Tompkins gathering the quickest pin in just 58 seconds in his 145 pound bout.

Adding decisions during that match-ending stretch was Trey Buchholz (126 pounds), and Ethan Coleman (138 pounds), as they garnered 18-6 major decision, and 9-1 decision triumphs respectively.

Bolivar-Richburg hits the road one final time to close out their regular season slate next week, as they prepare for a visit to the Addison Knights on Tuesday.

Beforehand, they will head for Dual Tournament action this weekend in Avoca, beginning Saturday morning.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Canisteo-Greenwood 57, Arkport/Canaseraga 41

ARKPORT — In their final regular season game on the slate, the Lady Redskins of Canisteo-Greenwood were locked into a tight battle across the opening eight minutes. A battle that saw both teams use a balanced attack on the front lines.

Through it, a two-point lead developed for the Lady Redskins, giving them a boost of momentum that suddenly kindled into much more in the second quarter, as the offense pushed down the gas pedal and never let off of it, holding Arkport/Canaseraga to just eight points in their first half-ending run to pull away ultimately for good in their 57-41 road win in Arkport on Thursday.

Canisteo-Greenwood (13-4) provided another outstanding offensive show in the second quarter after surviving a back-and-forth battle with Arkport/Canaseraga to begin the night, as Lillian Mullen rose to the occasion with 12 of her game-high 30 points fueling a 22-8 run to end the half with a lead they would never look back on.

The Lady Wolves would attempt to chip away at the deficit with their best effort in the third quarter, cutting the Canisteo-Greenwood lead down to as little as 10 going into the fourth, but the Lady Redskins defense would remain strong, holding the hosts in white and teal to just four points to maintain their lead.

To go with her 30 points, Mullen also grabbed 14 rebounds and four steals. Adding to the cause was Peyton Peters, who nearly had a double-double herself with nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Bailey Mullen and Brooke Byrd each scored seven points, with Byrd grabbing 13 rebounds along the way.

The Lady Redskins have officially claimed the top seed the Steuben County Tournament, as they now await action beginning next week.
