Thursday Roundup: C-R hands unbeaten Houghton Academy first loss on home floor, Lady Lions remain unbeaten with sweep of C-G on road

CANISTEO — The Lady Lions of Wellsville were just one of two unbeaten teams in Allegany County in their first four games of the season. Entering their fifth game over the road at Canisteo-Greenwood, they had a chance to keep that streak perfect. On Thursday, they did just that, as they brought out the brooms to provide a straight-set sweep of the Lady Redskins by a 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 count.

On the offensive attack, Kaylee Coleman led the way by recording a team-high nine kills to go with her seven aces from the service line. Jaelyn Knapp added five more kills to pair with two aces.

Helping further the cause for the Lady Lions, who move to 5-0 on the season, was Emma Dunaway, as she provided more success from the service line by garnering seven aces to go with one kill. Marley Adams added in three kills, two aces and two blocks, while the team’s libero Mattie Buckley dished out 12 assists along with two aces and one block on defense.

The Lady Lions will now take a week away from action to prepare an attempt for their sixth straight win, as they head out on the road to take on the Hammondsport Lady Lakers in a 7:15 p.m. contest, next Friday.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Houghton Academy 1

CUBA — In addition to Wellsville, Houghton Academy was the County’s other remaining undefeated team through the first four games. They too also had a chance to remain undefeated after tonight, and into the weekend. The Lady Rebels were led by Summer Mattison from both the service line, and the offensive front, as she recorded a team-leading 10 aces to pair with her eight kills, and three digs on defense. Brianna Green added in nine more kills on offense to go with seven digs, two aces and one assist up front. Quincy Tylor was busy at the front handing out the assists, coming away with 24 of them, adding one assist and one dig along the way.

Both teams will now see extended time off, as the Lady Rebels now get set to host Hinsdale in a 7:30 p.m. contest on April 12, while Houghton Academy returns to action one day later with a trip to Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 6 p.m. contest of their own on April 13.
